Welcome to my channel. Here you can see the work I carry out on my Land Rover Series 3 and my Porsche 911 (996.2).
The Land Rover is a car I have owned for 25 years and which I started to restore in 2015.
The Porsche I bought for my 40th birthday and while it needs less ‘restoration’ work than the Landy, it too needs a lot of maintenance. All of which I carry out myself.
I am not a trained mechanic, rather someone who has always had an interest in cars and the way they work.
I hope you enjoy my videos and that they either give you inspiration to try the work yourself, or provide an insight into some work you are already doing.
Whichever it is, many thanks for watching and I appreciate your support. Please feel free to leave a comment as I read them all, or use my email address below to send me photos of your project.

Porsche 911 (996) Restoration - Fitting the AOS, Plenum & Wiring Loom - Part 62
Dear All,
In this video I make great progress on the engine and actually fulfill my plans for the day, which is rare 😀
The feeling in the garage is very positive right now and I am really enjoying the project. It feels that this thing is taking shape!
As a viewer, you don’t see much of the thought and consideration that goes on behind the scenes, not to mention the sheer amount of mental puzzling and worry surrounding this project. There is also a lot of personal determination required and in reality I need to push myself to tackle certain jobs. And the engine work is one of them.

Dear All, In this video I begin dismantling the top end of the engine and start cleaning the surfaces. This will help the new gaskets seat properly and remove any corrosion and salt build-up. Which is a killer on these cars! There's a lot to do here and I am pleased to be finally making a start. The engine has been sitting under a blanket for two years!! Dear All, After many weeks of waiting, the new PAS parts are finally done. So I set off after work on a Friday afternoon to pick them up and fit them to the car. Also, after even more months of sitting under a blanket, I start work on the engine. Which is really exciting stuff and something I have been worrying about, but looking forward to. On a personal note, I mentioned to you last week that...

Dear All, In this video I continue working on all four calipers of the car. I gave the calipers with the snapped bleeder valves to a shop which didn't do a great job, but I am working with it. I also discovered the issue behind the non-working headlight washers. Which is great. They have never worked in my ownership and finding the issue is a relief. It is so simple!! Dear All, Well, its been a while since I last uploaded a video. Things are very busy here, and as I have mentioned to many of you, I am planning a big move. I have decided to leave my current job in Germany and move to pastures new - which is very exciting indeed. I will update you on this in a separate video, but for now here is a little update on the 911. Much love from Dresden, Joël

I think you should not clean thread that way. The thread is rolled not machined, so the shape is a bit different, additionally there is a cover layer on the top of the thread. That is why it needs some force to "clean" them.
Thanks for that. After doing it and watching the video back I realised the very same thing. I am glad I used thread locker. You live and learn, right?
Get yourself a 5ltr container of Kaltreiniger and fill up a small 1ltr garden plant pump-sprayer (pumpsprüher - I have a Gloria hobby 100 flush spray), as needed for cleaning oily and greasy parts. 👍🏻
Good tip, thanks!
Thank you for the content Joel, amazing as usual!!!
Have a long to do list, waiting for storage / out of road time :)
Thank you. And you are welcome .
Good luck with it.
Great progress and love the way you take your time and make everything spot on perfect. Thanks for bringing us along on the ride. I’ve now put my 996.1 to bed for the winter and will be tackling the coffin arms, drop links etc so it’s ready for next summer.
Hi Matt, thanks for your message. Those jobs you mention make a vast difference to the ride. Which components/brand will you use? Make sure you get an alignment done in the new year. Have fun, sir. 🫡
I’ve bought Meyle parts to do the job. They seemed to be the closest to OEM. The only question for myself is do I do the tuning forks too? Probably should I guess while I’m there. Thanks for the advice on alignment I will get that done.
I did all the control arms at the same time. The others will go sooner or later and you will have to pay twice for alignment. I also used Mayle and did a video on it a while back. The front Tuning forks have the plastic air deflector for the brakes and that didn’t fit on the Mayle product. I called them and even spoke to the technical guy there who knew about the problem and was working on it. The problem is, the shaft is thicker in the middle than the OEM item and the clips don’t wrap round the alloy. I had to modify both air ducts. That was a while back so it might be sorted, but be warned. These things are what turns a quick job into an all dayer.
Nice progress...I'm feeling guilty as all I did this week was drive mine 🤣. Only a few weeks left before winter sets in and she comes off the road and goes into storage mode for a few months. Don't beat yourself up on the patience front. This is a big project.
Thanks Marcus. Out of interest, which precautions do you take for winter storage?
@@My911 Fairly basic stuff, though I am mulling whether to do an oil/filter change (I've only put on4000 kms since the spring but probably should nonetheless) before she goes to sleep. A full fuel tank with added stabilizer and leaving a battery tender on all the time which I otherwise use sparingly through the summer. Because of the age of the car now, the cost difference between four months of storage insurance vs regular has me wondering whether I should just keep it on the road for those nice weather days...our BC west coast winters aren't that bad.
Thanks. If you don’t end up drive it on good days and it sits for months, it’s worth over pressurising the tyres by half a bar or so, as it helps with flat spots. I also put two layers of carpet under each tyre. I have also put metal scouring sponges in both exhausts to prevent any rodents going in. But that is a long shot if you have a good garage. I also leave the tender in 24/7
Wow, piece of cake replacing coil packs with the engine out, hah. Had a quick smile when you made reference to the Bentley manual. It was the first thing I bought at the beginning of the year before I started tackling my own maintenance. It paid for itself on my first minor job. Reminded me of the last manual I bought for my Ford Cortina…seemingly in another lifetime. Nice work.
Morning Marcus, good to hear from you. I agree, it’s a must. So, Ford Cortina, eh?
@@My911 Yeah, I learned a few things about working on cars with that one: 1968 1600E. Driving home one night in 1980 just north of London on the M1, there was an almighty bang which quickly brought me to a full stop at the roadside. Turned out the bell-housing fractured (so motor was effectively off its third mount), starter motor sheared off and was never found. Had to replace both the bell housing and gear box. Ahh, youth 😄
What a classic story. Not sure I can top that one 😅 Thanks for sharing.
Are you getting a new RMS as well. Cheap and while you're in there.
100% 🙂
I’m surprised you didn’t do a Disc-Brake conversion on your Series 3 LR. Better Safety, less Weight and less Maintenance.
Hi. I did consider it but I’ve done less than 200 miles in the Landy since finishing it. So it simply wasn’t worth the investment. I also have this thing about originality. It’s a curse.
@@My911 Well, if you’re not driving it, you’re right. It doesn’t matter. It’s just that the Wolf wheels add a lot more unsprung weight that the Discs would compensate for.
The variocam pads don't look too bad to be honest, it's mostly the 5-chain engines that eat them away. Most of your work is always inspiring to do some work on mine as well.
Hi, thanks for your feedback. And yes, get stuck in. It’s very rewarding.
Hey I’m secretly watching your build as I had a similar project on my channel a while back. If it were my channel, I’d replace all the guides. Simply because I now know the engine well enough to be adequately confident to tackle it. The main ones will always be the variocam pads, which you’re addressing, because of how much more worn they get over the others. The big ones I pulled from my 102k mile engine were fine. So take that for what it’s worth. Best of luck and I’ll be watching!
Hi, I know you 😅 and am subscribed to your channel. I watched your 996 build. How is it driving now? Ps, thanks for your feedback.
I know it’s pricey Joël, but have you contemplated the Hartech engine conversion? Maybe more applicable to my 996.1 (3.4 litre) than your 996.2.
Hi, I did talk to them but too pricey for me right now. I will face a rebuild at some point I am sure.
Get the engine ice blasted.. it will look like new when it’s done..
I would love to. And I am sure it would resolve the fury salt issue too. But this rebuild a mix of what I want to do and what I can do. 🙂
Sehr interessantes Video. Richtig cool ! Viva Porsche 996 !
Vielen Dank! 🙂🙏
Do change the oil cooler, aos and the surrounding hoses, including the oil filler tube. Not to expensive but expensive if the engine is in the car 😀
Hi, I did the aos and the oil filler tube. Couldn’t do anymore.
G'day nice work mate 👍
Thanks dude.
Very interested to buy your kit. Long story, I did something similar. Got the rack connectors from a race shop in the US. But at present I've just got two hydraulic hoses flipped back on themselves into the rack Horrible solution, so what you've built is EXACTLY what I'm looking for!
Hi Daniel, thanks for your message. I’m in the middle of moving to Vienna right now so organising a kit is sadly not possible right now. My plan was to produce them for exactly your reason, but time always plays a part in the best laid plans. Let’s keep in contact and see if I can get something done.
@@My911ah bummer. But good luck on your move to Vienna.
@@danielowen6144 thanks Daniel. Did the move this weekend and we are now sitting in a couch in the new flat. Job done (almost) have a good Sunday.
For engine work in Germany you can always contact Jarno from Werksmotor in Kiel, they rebuild the engines with ductile iron cilinders, but this option if you do let them build the block is stil around 9000 euro (which is competive pricing if you look at the quality of their work). If the day ever comes that my 3.4 will need a rebuild I think I'll take it to him.
Thanks, this is a new contact for me.
Impressive solution and congrats on getting there after a lot of frustration. I remain so impressed at your level of determination and perseverance. On a far more modest note, I completed a fairly full brake replacement yesterday on my 996. On your recommendation I checked all 12 dampers before undertaking the job to see if they needed replacement too. Remarkably (maybe owing more to the pacific northwest climate), they all slid out easily and are in excellent condition so they all went back in. Calipers still look like new. New discs (SHW) all round, Akebono ceramic pads, new pad sensors and assorted clips and bolts. Seated in the new pads and discs last night. She feels great and no squealing. Having just bled the brakes this spring, I have not yet installed the stainless steel braided brake lines and will likely do that this winter. Very satisfying and thanks again for the heads-up on the dampers.
Hi Marcus, thanks for the update, sounds like you have been busy. Promise me you will get out there and drive the car. It’s what they are best at… and looking gorgeous of course 😅
G'day great work mate 👍
Thanks mate.
Well done! Nice of you to give back to community!
Hi, thank you. And you are welcome.
very clever
Thank you.
Nice video! I just got my 996 and there is the slightest coolant drip only like 4x drips 4-6 hrs after driving (think during the day or night after work). The PPI said the hose is loose and at a bad angle (not flush). I am afraid to just push it home and re tighten as I am sure the hose has "learned" its position. I need to do a new serpentine belt and a few other maintenance items so I think I will be going with this main rear water hose kit! I REALLY like the quick fitting hose kit. If you are still active, I wonder how this part stood the test of time, how long did it work for you for? Any issues? Thanks,
Also, I am really in need of those part numbers!
Hi, thanks for your message. I am indeed still active and am uploading a full 4 year restoration of the 996 on the same channel. So make sure you have a look. You will learn loads of the jobs you have a head of you 😅 Congratulations on getting the 996. They are truely great cars indeed. Very well engineered and thought out. Let me know if you need any further advice. I am travelling a lot these days but happy to help where I can. Regarding the hose repair, I have had no issues at all with it. Been as good as gold and it’s a worthy upgrade. Your issue is probably due to a stretched hose and they will all need replacing eventually. My other car is a 1970’s Land Rover and it drips fluids all the time. In reality your drip is nothing to worry about at all. It’s just this image of perfection we have is difficult to shake. As long as the hose is not porous or damaged, it will be fine. Have fun driving your car and make sure any jobs you do don’t turn into a full restoration. Otherwise you will never drive it! Let’s me know what spec/age/colour it is. Kind regards, Joël
Jump in the web and visit Design911.com. You choose your vehicle and they have all the right diagrams in there.
They make repair kits that you can tap with a pipe thread and then insert a tube nut that the bleeder then fits into. I’ve done it on bmw brakes. Some high end calipers use that setup by design.
Thanks Jason, do you have a product name or even a link?
@@My911 search “caliper bleed screw repair”, should come right up.
Thanks dude
Hi, great channel. I’m trying to match the under seal in my 996. What did you use? Thanks.
Hi, I actually got a paint shop to match it. They even found the code. But I’m afraid I don’t have it… 😬 And I’m sadly not on speaking terms with the shop any more because they ruined my two front wings.
@@My911 I’m sorry to hear that. Thanks for getting back to me 👍
Bleeders are the worst! If they drilled too far in and damaged the taper, that would be a real problem. Surprised that in Germany, it is so tough to find people to work on Porsches! They should be everywhere!
Hi, I am living in Dresden, which is in the old East Germany. So Porsches haven’t been around for as long as the rest of the country. But still, it’s not rocket science.
You want references from those doing the work prior to handing over the parts. And ask questions that cannot be answered by a simple yes or no. I.e 'out of how many aluminium brake calipers have you successfully retrieved broken bleed valves?'.' Ask questions how they will go about when hitting a snag and how they prevent certain mistakes that will leave you with a useless part and a bill. It's not a guarantee that you will find a professional but you will quickly identify the bull crappers
Yes, I agree.
Bigg Red Brake shop in Worcester or Pro Calipers in London.. Would have done the job for you without issue..
Yes, I have heard of big red and I am sure they would have done a great job. But I used a local company I stead.
I think you will still get correct torque with new nipples . You can buy another nipple next size up re drill and tap As you already have been told it’s also the seat that counts .
Thanks Steven.
Left handed drill set is your friend!!! The other option is to get a proper machine shop to drill and tap oversize and helicoil it. OR machine oversize, press in a new piece of ally and then drill and tap a whole new thread and seat.
Hi, thanks and yes, I had thought about helicoil but I will see how things pan out with it later. 👍 I really need to live on to other jobs now and the calipers will happen in the background.
Understand your frustration, that attitude is everywhere. You may be ok with the threads, the bleed nipples don’t need to be tightened too hard. I was worried that they have drilled too deep and damaged the seat for the nipple.
Thanks, yes, time will tell. I need to crack on with more spreading matters but will come back to the calipers later.
Hi Joel! Nice detail work! If needed You can buy a used pair of calipers for $500 in the LA area.
Hi Gream, thank you. May follow that up if need be.
I wonder if there's a larger thread available for bleed nipples? You could then tap them out larger but it's the seat down inside that's the really important bit, if that's been scuffed with a drill I think you're on a hiding to nothing. Other option is a Time-Sert thread repair.
Hi, that’s a good thought. I have used time-cert on the brocken header bolts. And it worked perfectly well.
G'day yes drilling them breaks is a difficult task but there is a difference between ya I give it a go attitude and taking pride in your work. Its hard to find people with pride in there work these days thats why I like watching you do work mate you take pride in your work and it shows.
I agree entirely, and thank you for your kind words.
Great video 😊I’m about to embark on changing steering rack and possibly power steering pipe fittings. Did you fit that valve in one of the new Voss fittings or leave out? Thanks
Hi Phil, I had big plans to refit the valve, but in the end I left it out. It just means that when you detach the pipes with a full system, the fluids will run out of that single pipe. I intend to have a cap at the ready in the future.
Great to see you back here Joël and it has been a while. Funny, I'm currently gathering parts for a fairly full brake job on my 996 but will wait until the weather sours as I've had too much fun actually driving the car this summer. Currently, just gathering parts: new discs (SHW) all round, ceramic pads, sensors and am just debating whether I should get replacement sets of those brake dampeners before I start the job. Having not dealt with salt, I think (hope?) my calipers are still in pretty good shape. I think you have previously alluded to a big move...will be interested to hear what awaits. All the best.
Thanks Marcus, remind me where you are based? If you are saying no salt I guess it’s either Japan or West Coast US. Damper parts are worth doing. These deteriorate over time but just have a look when you are in there. OPC has them in over night. Mine looked OK from outside but inside they were hollow! 😅
@@My911 Your deductive powers are pretty good. I am indeed on the west coast...but of Canada. I will add the dampeners to my shopping cart. From other comments, it appears you might be westward bound to the US?
Hi, yes, I am indeed heading to the US. First to Vienna for a year then on to Florida. Big move but very exciting.
Ps, if you do anything with your rear shocks, take a look at the spacer between the spring top plate. Mine was cracked in one side which affects the ride hight a little.
G'day Joel great video mate
Thank you. I hope you are well. How’s the farm coming along? Any interesting finds?
@@My911 I am getting there mate. The Farm is starting to get started now it's Spring here. Almost getting things ready to start videoing. Dad and I built the front fence and gates. I didn't video it dad dose not want to be on video just quiet yet. I will start our big vegetable garden before summer so I will video that. Oh and a introduction video is on the to do list. Nice work Joel! The coating on the pistons is Hard Anodizing! Frenkit out of Spain is a great source for Brembo caliper components! That’s where we get our components! Crack On!
Hi Graem, many thanks and nice to hear from you. I will bear that in mind. Hope you are well. Regards Joël
“Why change something that doesn’t need to be changed” OR………..while you’re there you might as well change it……
Exactly.
Just done the exact thing today with my calipers and they look identical to yours. The top part of the thread gets corroded because of the steel bracket that's fixed to the caliper ( dissimilar metals) but there should be enough good thread to get hold of the brake pipe nut and pul it in tight. I did replace the seals with Bigg Red ones, £22 for all in both calipers , they get good reviews so we'll see.
Good job. It’s well worth saving the callipers. They are such expensive components of the car. I did look at big red but everything is taxed coming out of the UK. I went OEM
Does this move mean you're going to have to convert the 996 to RHD, Joël?
Hi, thanks for your message. The move may be too far to take the car sadly, but we will have to see. Where there’s a will there’s a way.

This is true. I’ve checked and it’s about 3k to ship a car to the US. That times two and your into big money. But you are right, something will have to be done. Can’t restore two cars and just leave them. 😢
I see 2 options: 1. Negotiate the costs into your relocation package. 2. Loan the cars to someone like me until your eventual return to Europe. In the 1st case, you're going to have to get your skates on in case (oh no!!!) the orange twit wins and builds a wall. To be fair, Landys are well known for eating pets... 😂
Thanks for the offer. I will keep it in mind. In reality. I’d the cars stay in the EU, they will need driving.
Replace the auxiliary spring (made of polyurethane) inside the gaiter of the front struts when you replace the latter. The one you showed is perished and they play an important role in the overall spring/damper/ARB calibration. Much more than the term 'bump stop' would lead you to believe. Replace them in pairs.
Hi Bernard, thanks for your message and advice. I have done this since making the video. 👍
I think you should consider replacement versus refurbish. I bet you could find a set used and then just do seals and boots. The condition of these does not look good at all.
Thanks for your message. I have since decided to completely refurbish them 🙂
Hi Joel, hope you are well, do you use wheel spacers on your Landy ?
Hi, thanks for your message, yes I am well thanks. I hope you are too. I don’t use spacers, just wolf rims on standard studs. The wolf rims have a deeper offset making it appear they are on spacers. If you are doing the same thing, it’s worth investing in extended studs as mine only just make it through the thicker rim steel and hold the lug nuts. I should upgrade really. 🤔 regards Joël
The steering boxes on the old landrovers were geared to the old type tyre widths .then when you put modern radial tyres on the steering is heavier when doing slow manoeuvring ..
Thanks, that’s good knowledge.
Corrosion starts at the weld between the hollow piston and the solid upper part with the thread and hex as the weld is never as solid a base for the subsequent chrome plating as the material right next to it. (In case you wanted to know 😊) The grease is a good idea against rust (dont know how well the polyurethane aux. spring takes it, though). On the 997 the front piston rods rust a lot faster and are a known MOT/TUV fail. 9x6 better quality in that respect. Good job on the refurbishment, love the dedication to also get the details right.
Thanks. That’s pretty good knowledge. Are you an owner/enthusiast or in the trade?
Personally, I wouldnt remove the 'tungsten' (I bet it is hard anodized, not tungsten coated) from the face of the pistons only to substitute it for VHT paint. It just won't be as durable. If the anodizing has become spotty at the face, you could paint, I guess but with the compression against the pad/anti-squeal plate when braking it will be short lived. Replacing the pistons would give you peace of mind for the next 20y.
Hi Bernard, thanks for your advice. I have indeed decided to simply clean them and leave them alone. In reality they are fine. 🙂
Thanks Bernard, I agree with you. In reality I have decided to clean and leave well alone. They are fine! 🙂
That was taking you forever men! I can get your frustration, i have restored like 5 cars and there is always surprise! Subscribed btw
Hi, thank you. Why do we do it to ourselves!! 😅
As someone who is not skilled in repairing stuff, your video was inspirational - saw it yesterday, did it today, the tips and hiccups you documented all helped me do it properly. Thank you and keep up the good job!
Hi, and thank you for the positive feedback. I am glad the video helped you. The more you do the more your confidence will grow and you will be rebuilding the gearbox in a few months! Great job. Joël
G'day Joel great video mate 👍
Thank you! Hope you are well.
@@My911 We are well. Tomorrow we will start preparing for some snow that the weather people say we are going to get next week but can never trust the weather guy lol
Joel the rubber goes hard with age the car is 20 plus years old.. with the work you have done on the car to preserve it.. it’s a shame on a performance car not to change a lot of the suspension and brake parts…. A piston kit is pennies.. much like the suspension.. new bearings & top mounts etc are really a must really.. making it shining with paint doesn’t help the driving experience.. just my take.. it’s all subjective I guess.. 🤙🏼
Hi, thanks for your message. I agree. The suspension is actually much newer than the car itself. It was new in 2017 and is in great condition. And (spoiler alert) I have opted for a full brake callipers refresh including seals and bleeder valves. Thats all to come. Keep the faith.
@@My911 Good to hear 🤙🏼
