- Опубликовано: 4 апр 2019
- Busan dialect is the most popular dialect in Korean (there are many others), and for many good reasons. These days many celebrities speak Busan dialect, and that has sparked a lot of people to begin studying it on their own. In this video you’ll learn all the basics of Busan dialect (부산 사투리), including grammar, vocabulary, phrases, intonation, pronunciation, and more. Since there are no official “rules” in dialects and each person can speak slightly differently, this video will give a good overview of the major points you’ll want to know to be able to speak in Busan dialect.

Busan is essentially Texas of Korea
I love comparisons like this. Would Seoul dialect, being big city, sound high-strung like NYC? Or laidback like LA?
@oneviwatara yes. Because there are many mountains in korea so each regions were isolated, diverse dialects developed even though korea is very small!
Also busan(gyeong sang namdo) is like texas of Korea, but the accents sounds more like boston it tends to be fast and kinda noisy too.
@oneviwatara some sound horrible? Lol actually busan dialect is considered noisy in korea too. Its controversial .. many people hate it including me ( even though i live in busan)
oneviwatara I’m khmer 😳😭
Um, No. Texas is not cool, and a Texas accent does not make men sound masculine or women cute. Makes people sound stupid. A masculine accent for men in the US is Boston or New York, and a cute one for women is South/North Carolina.
Basically:
*Seoul:* oh no! You fail! :(
*Busan:* yOU PIECE OF SH-
😂😂
i guess in delhi of korea
Lmaooo😭🤣🤣
I want a Korean drama where Billy plays all the characters. That's all.
My parents are immigrants so I learned my korean completely from them. Then when I went to college, all the other korean kids would always freak out when I spoke korean cause apparently my satoori is super extreme. Didn’t know what they were talking about till these videos lol
On top of that you also might be speaking an "outdated" version because your parents' version of the language is stuck in the year they emigrated...I know that's the case for me when I visit my mom's country and I say random words that haven't been used commonly since 1987 😅
My Mom is from Busan and my Dad is White, so my Dad learned all his Korean from my Mom. All too often he'll get some Korean he meets at church or something give him an strange look and be like "... why do you have a Busan accent?"
I've equated it as being like a Korean who learned all their English from their Southern-accented spouse and saying "Howdy y'all!" when meeting other white people 😂
Where are your parents from?
뭐라카노 finally makes sense now! I would hear in the song Satoori of BTS

In what song?

Damnn your accent is on point
I thought I know basic Korean after learning 1,5 years. And I'd done pretty well in Seoul, too! Several times! I was feeling so good about my language skills.
Then I came to Busan... and made some local friends :D The minute they forget they have a foreigner among them and switch from the standard to dialect, they lose me completely.
3:18 so this was jimin from bts was teaching on of his vlives
I was searching for this comment lol💜
LMAO YES
I been looking for this comment too 😂
True lol😂😂
I literally just arrived in Busan today so I hope this helps!
Have a good trip!!
Busan is the second largest city in Korea, so I think dialect is also famous. It often appears in movies and dramas. I'm Korean, but I think Billy is better at Busan dialect because I'm from Seoul. Thank you for the fun video today. I want foreigners to know that Korean is fun.
Yep we know thanks@@ Wanna learn Korean more. ❤
Yeaaah the ending particles and grammatical structures of the korean language are so fun 🗿ㅠㅠ
Yep, it’s fun! 정말 재미있어요 ㅋ ^^
My pronunciation is garbage. It’s unfortunate that I am learning so late in life. I just have to keep at it.
Korean used to be a tonal language in the past. But it disapeared in most of dialects. But it still remained in Gyeongsangdo dialect.
and jeju
What is a tonal langage ? 🤔 You mean like chinese ?
@@mooncakiiee Yes
I think it would be safe to call it a pitch accent just like in Japanese.
Tone doesn't determine the meaning of words in Gyeongsangdo dialect so I don't think it's tonal
i'm realising i unintentionally speak busan dialect because of how lazy my pronunciation is sometimes hahahah
Wait how do you unintentionally speak Busan dialect?! This is not be rude sry I'm just really blunt
@@Sasha-dg1sk oh haha i wouldn't say i've been entirely speaking it of course, it's just that sometimes my pronunciation is a bit lazy and i pronounce things the same way as in the busan dialect lol
test subject 009 ahhh ok that’s actually pretty cool ik whenever I say something in English sometimes I would unconsciously say it with an Aussie accent even tho ive never been to Australia haha
@@Sasha-dg1sk i'm australian and i can't even do an australian accent lmao we should swap
test subject 009 lmao teach me Korean let’s see if it works haha
"Diphthongs are often pronounced more relaxed" i love this dialect already.
real, i literally cannot with those because it feels like i have to put so much “energy” into the pronunciation 😭
Busan people also use the word "퍼뜩" which is equivalent to "빨리" (quickly) in standard Korean, and most non-Busan people have no idea what that is. Considering how Koreans love everything to be quick (빨리빨리), this can lead to many interesting situations. For example, (at a restaurant) when a Busan person says "퍼뜩 주이소~(Can I get my dish asap)" and others get 퍼뜩 as some kinds of 떡(rice cake). Then, they reply as "우린 그런 떡 없어요 (We don't have such kind of rice cake)."
I saw a video of Jimin explaining kagakaga (I know I did not spell that correctly; that’s what my American ears hear)
And I saw a video of Jimin and Taehyung explaining Paida.
Please excuse my poor explanation! I just thought it was cool that Billy used those words, as well.
I live in Busan but I also trying to speak like Seoul ppl(standard) hahahah
anyway Billy speaks dialect rly well wooow
My husband is from Busan, I've experienced this kind of trouble a lot 😄
I was born in Ulsan and lived 7 years in Busan. This vid is fun and well made.
We normally use 표준어 More than 사투리. Elderly people, like in our parent's age or granny's age use 사투리's words and intonation, but not all of them. And young people living in Busan and Ulsan use some intonation of dialect but not much use 'dialet words'.
Koreans like Busan dialet performed in Korea movie. Because it makes people can enjoy vivid acting.
I like it too.
But most of Koreans use Standard language. Only intonation is slightly different.
So if you have in mind to trip to the Busan, Ulsan, Daegu , any place in Korea you dont have to worry about the Dialect.
I need more Busan Dialect videos. Not only because I wanna learn... I just love the way it sounds and I wanna listen to you talking in that dialect more 🤣
Also the video is really fun, great job!
Wow your Korean sounds so fluent Billy.
Busan dialect never ceases to sound so cool to me no matter how many times I hear it in Kdramas! lol Thanks for this video, it cleared up a lot of questions I had about it!
This explains the dialects in Reply 1988 and Reply 1994 so much!
Sabrina yesss I was just thinking that
Try watching Reply 1997, the first one in the series. If I remember right, the show was almost entirely done in the Busan dialect.
@@ianhomerpura8937 yes, it was really notorious, when I first watched it, I haven't had learned anything about Korean yet and didn't know what satoori was, but since I was into kdramas, I could still recognize there was a difference in the way they spoke
So they had to teach Jimin and Jk how to talk all over again 😂😂😂😂
I just find it so funny that it's so relatable since I was born in Busan and my relatives speak like that, especially my grandpa.
This video is such a masterpiece!
It also gave me slight (off topic) homesickness because Northern Sweden also shortens sentences, chances intonation, has odd words for everything, and could be seen by some Swedes as more attractive/manly for it.
Your skits are so on point that I had to bookmark this video, nicely done! It must have taken ages to edit it all!
I am a Korean speaking the standard version and whenever I meet my family down there I don't necessarily understand but I can guess and get the point, but if they speak really fast, man I am out.
I'm a native Busan person. Oh my goodness. This video is hilarious. ;}
"오빠야 어떤데?" loved this part because Billy's face 😂
Your "친구" reference was epic! Seems like many people don't notice it.
헐 나 부산인데 나보다 잘아노...
when your teacher is like this, learning the language becomes more fun 😍
6:08 맛있노?는 어색한 문장이고(일베충으로 오해 받을 수 있음) 맛 어떻노?가 자연스러운 문장입니다
my grandma talks like this. i used to think “개안타” meant something about a dog. like “it’s ok, don’t mind the dog” (because 개 = dog, and my grandma had this very annoying dog that peed on my sister one day, all over her clothes, which prompted my grandmother to say to us “개안타, 개안타!” even though if you ask my sister it was NOT 개안타, not at all...)
Linda Kim ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 개안타=개의(介意)치 않다 의 준말(Abbreviations)이에엽
What does it mean ?.....
@@bean7496 개안타 means; it's no problem, don't worry.
@@bean7496 I'd say it's closer to meaning "it's okay".
This is bending my brain... everything I've learnt is a lie...
why do i find this so funny skdksmkdskd (the examples)
idk nan m0lla for me it’s because he’s yelling at a teddy bear
I find it funny too 😂
4:36 as a foreigner I heard literally no difference
I couldn't either and I listened to it a few times lol
as a foreigner I could tell pretty clear difference. because my mother tongue is finnish and there is a lot of double consonants in finnish.
If you hiss s S s S s S s S back and forth a few times with more and less pressure then listen again you will hear that ㅆ is like S and ㅅ is like s, meaning one has more air force. :)
Same here, I hear no difference what so ever :c
"Ssa" "싸" sounds more longer than "sa" "사"
3:18 Busan dialect speakers: 가가가가?
Tagalog speakers: Bababa ba? (Is it going down? or Going down?)
HAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHHAHA OO NGA NOH
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for all of your hardwork. That was a really fun and interesting video:)
This was so fun and interesting to watch! It’d be so cool if you did videos for other dialects like Gwangju or Jeju dialect!
The production value of this episode is so on point! I loved all the small side-by-side examples
My grandmother speaks the dialect and everytime I hear it sends a warm feeling to my stomach. :)
ur videos are so informative & funny at the same time! such a pleasure to watch
And I was planning to go to Busan first instead of Seoul HAHAH I love your vídeos they make my day awesome!!!!!
I love Busan accent too... I'm new here. You've gained one more follower with this awesome video.. Thanks for your efforts. Hi from europe😙
Thank you, all of your videos are awesome!!
i love these videos!!!! I've been learning Korean on and off, but these videos never fail me. Thank you-ssss from your Armenian subscriber, Billy!
wow... I am born and raised in Ulsan. but there are some expression I never heard of in my life.. especially about '강구' as in a roach. Also I thought that the pronunciation of "쌀" was the yardstick to seperate Northern part of 경상도 from Southern part of 경상도.. like the pronunciation of "pen" does between southerner and Yankee in US...BTY Your Korean is very impressive.
As a Korean American, I absolutely love this channel. I speak Korean with my parents. I love how detailed you get in your videos. I get so much out of em. Thanks!
I love this dialect. My Korean family is originally North Korean, but resettled in Busan during/after the war, so even though I did not even visit Busan until many of them passed away, I grew up hearing it all the time. At least when I showed up in Busan, locals simply switched to the standard Seoul dialect when dealing with me.
I have heard stories though in Daegu (similar dialect) where visitors from Seoul were unwelcome on a business trip, but when one of them broke into the local dialect, they suddenly got the red carpet treatment.
Billy;! Another great video. Thank you! 감사합니다
This was really fun to watch! 고맙습니다 😊
daegu dialect is more friendly than busan haha even im from daegu. i can feel busan has strong accent
부산 사투리 억수로 좋아합니당 ㅠㅠ
Man, I'm saving this video... The acting and the examples are all top tier!

The fact that old Korean dramas have really helped me so much that I could really understand errthing 👀👀 I wish I could do this much progress in French for my school😂😂😂

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this GREAT VIDEO!!! I love learning about dialects. Please show us more
there's so much love about Busan in your videos ♥ 나두 부산사투리 엄청 좋아하는디 ㅋㅋㅋ
The biggest characteristic of Gyeongsangnam-do dialect (basically including Busan dialect) is the use of -노, -나, -고, and -가 distinctly in questioning. Usually those whose mother tongue isn't the dialect fail to use it correctly. Also, there's no standard ways to write the dialect. So, the following examples are just in my personal way.
Wh-question with verbs: -노
- 니 짐 머리 카노? (What are you talking about?)
- 니 머 좋아하노? (What do you like?)
Wh-question with 이다/아이다 (아니다 in standard KR): -고
- 이기 머고? (What's this?) -- "머고" often becomes "머꼬" as well.
- 내가 와 한국 사람이 아이고? (Why am I not a Korean?)
Yes-no-question with verbs: -나
- 부산 오고 싶나? (Want to come to Busan?)
- 해운대 해수욕장 가 밨나? (Ever visited Haeundae beach?)
Yes-no-question with 이다/아이다: -가
- 여어가 서울이가? (Is here Seoul?)
- 그기 든킨 도나스 아이가? (Isn't that Dunkin Doughnut?)
AAAH THANK YOU SO MUCHFOR THIS VIDEO...I LEARNED A LOT...Please, could you do one more with more common expressions of Busan Dialect? 🥺🥺🥺 제발!

I just learned 바퀴벌레 like two weeks ago and since then, I've kept encountering this word in the most random places (thankfully just the word, not the pests themselves). I'd like to learn some Busan dialect when I'm a bit more advanced because it really does sound pretty neat. But for now, this video helps to at least get a grasp of the differing word endings, and it was super funny as usual.
Pls do more videos of the busan dialect. I would love to learn more about the dialect.
That was awesome! Busan satoori does sound very cool :D I loved the video, it is so interesting to know more of such details. I hi=ope one day I will be able to at least understand that dialect if not speak it haha

I love the gyeongsang dialect so much. It really does sound cool, straight to the point, and really fun to speak.
Also it’s so cool how majority of these expressions were familiar to me considering bts used them in their song: Paldogangsan (Satoori rap). I love learning about satoori.
Thankyou so much. Awesome video. I moved to busan and then lived in daegu, tongyeong, jeju, changwon, and kimcheon. The dialects really threw me, but were super fun once I got the hang if them. Please do more dialect videos!

I had a lot of wow moments while watching this one! I just watched Reply 1994 recently and I learned about the concept of 사투리 there. High quality, as always
I am from Busan and this video makes me smile haha thank you so much. But I can say with confidence, young busan people don’t say like that these days. Most of dialects on this video are used from old people who have lived in busan for their whole life.
That's fair. I learned all of my dialect from older people (40s, 50s~), and that was 15 years ago. These days younger people don't use such strong dialect, and I think these days it's a bit easier to understand than before.
Reply series introduced me this dialect 😁
as someone who is still a beginner that is learning the language steadily, my gosh does it get complicated. i'm excited but overwhelmed a bit lol
This is very fun! Busan dialect is very cool but is kind of tricky since I've got used to listen to Seoul one, I should start learning more. God bless and your family 😇😊☺️
