    My Tip;
Sometimes I write notes but never look back at them..I realized that when I create something nice, like a drawing or a page in my kpop journal, I tend to carry it around, look at it over and over again, basically memorizing every detail. So make your study notebook eye-catching, then not only do you like the result of ending product, but you'll like the process of making it as well.

You have to have a special level of confidence to write with a pen. I use a pencil, because I make a lot of mistakes. I recently bought erasable color pencils, which blew my mind that they even existed. I currently have 3 notebooks. One of which I use for random Korean RUclips videos. My other two are for grammar books.

I use multiple coloured pens... and occasionally... Tipex (white out)
Wasn't allowed to at school... No idea why, it's fabulous stuff.
... By the way I make far more mistakes in the English parts of my notes, than the Korean parts.
My English spelling is apaling broderling atrostious...

When I was first studying Korean, I used the color coding system to help me learn the sentence structure, verb conjugation rules, sentence examples, vocab, and the special conjugation rules. It's a bit time consuming to switch pens all the time, but looking back it's easier for me to visually review what I learned without having to read the entire page/section. I hope someone else finds my method a bit helpful to help study!

Well, I have 2 notebooks. One for my main notes and important things to remember, and one for writing practice. I write down how to write certain vowels or consonants with the stroke orders. Then when I’m done with that I repeat writing that letter for about a third of a page of A5 paper, with the stroke order above my writing. I find it very handy to make sure I know how to write the letters and drill them in my head.

I tend to find that if you have notes on your notes, writing them in a different colour helps differentiate and partition your notebook.
    Writing colour codes:
    Black: description; the original notes
    Blue: examples (in Korean)
    Red: new thoughts and review
    Highlighting colour codes:
    Yellow: highlighting topic
Pink: highlighting difficulty or lack of understanding
    Green: new vocabulary
I hope this helped add a layer!
By the way, writing notes on your notes is super helpful for working your way through new concepts and also thinking beyond original thoughts. This is great practice also in other areas of studies. Thanks for the great content as usual Billy :)

This is awesome and I just recently brainstormed my own thoughts on this. I actually am using three notebooks. Grammar notebook, vocabulary notebook, and workbook. Grammar is organized by grammar concept. Vocabulary is organized into categories. Workbook is organized by date, and combines the new grammar and vocabulary I have learned. Occasionally there is some overlap, but in the quest of learning a new language, sometimes you have to let yourself get carried away!

I've tried lots of different methods, but in the end it is google docs all the way for me. I love being able to search it for the info I need and edit it freely. Copy and paste is also really helpful since I do most of my studying with online materials. And I can easily share my notes with others, and access it from anywhere, on any device. For sample sentences, I "sentence mine" and put them in anki. Anki repeats them for me and I read them quickly and press good if I understand it, but the real benefit is that when I want to look up sentences using specific grammar, I can find them easily (since all sentences contain many different grammar points, the search feature allows me to find all the sentences I want, not just the one I saved because of one of the specific grammar points in uses). Vocab goes in anki too.

I agree 100%! My method is that I sort all new vocab into diff categories on google spreadsheets -> copy paste the info onto sorted Anki decks with additional details + audio examples from forvo or some other site so I can take advantage of spaced repetition. When studying/reviewing decks I practice writing down sentences with each flash card's vocab to ensure I am able to use what I'm learning.

I have a color-coded notebook that I use for vocabulary, but what I do is I write the new word in hangul, then I draw a picture of an English word or something to help me remember it. For example, the word "문" sounds like "moon," so I would draw a picture of the moon in red, then a picture of the definition (door) in blue. I then study those new words/pictures every few days or so. It can work for new grammar concepts too, but it's more difficult to come up with English words to match those haha

When i first started to learn English, vocabulary helped me more, as a beginner than grammar, since I could tell individually what each word meant I could understand the overall of a sentence, and then Google the grammar points I didn't know.
With Korean is impossible, because the words aren't as separated as it is in English, for a beginner is quite hard to tell what is a verb ending or something to do with grammar or only vocabulary, since everything is attached. But once you have a grammar basis, even if you don't have much vocabulary, you can tell whats happening. Like this is subject that happened somewhere and this is something to add characteristics to the subject, even not knowing much words, you can figure it out.
It was kinda hard to me, since I've tried to apply the same method I used learning English before (and studying grammar is boring ) with Korean.
I was months studying grammar to get a grasp of what's really happening in a simple text. Korean is harder than I thought but is getting easier. Its interesting comparing the process of learn these two languages, are very different from each other. What was harder in English seems to be easier in korean, like, listening. I could finally understand what I heard in English after a hell of time, I was subtitle dependent for a long time, even knowing every single world they spoke. With Korean is the opposite. Even not being very good at it yet, the little I know, I can identify easily. I think the way they speak is less complicated.
Its fun learning languages. I do it for fun, as crazy as it sounds.

I have a notebook where I spam (basically write everything) all my random knowledge of Korean in there.
It's great for revising on what you've learned and helps drill the info in your brain.

I am HORRIBLE at studying. I was literally an adult before I figured out I actually dont even know HOW to "study" (my piano teacher wouod get mad at me cause I "played" he piano I didnt "practice" and it took a long time to figure out what she meant and then to clue in I was doing that with everything...!!). It is really really hard for me to focus even though I love learning amd even if Im learning a favourite subject.... and the fact I dont know how to study makes it all even harder. So thank you for the tips! There are some new ideas for me here Im going to start using to see if it works for me. *determined*

I have several different colored pens. My title is one color. Body text is another color. Words in the other language is in another color. Additional important notes are in another color. I don't currently use highlighters, but I am considering it.

Should I structure my learning notebook with a table of contents and everytime I learn something from a category I put it there ?

  • @bean7496

Hi Billy, I have been learning Korean for over 2 months now, and i just realised that I need a notebook to keep track of things and help remember them. I planned on structuring it in a textbook form with a table of contents and example sentences and pronunciation guides. But with what you said about needing two notebooks.... I only have one for Korean, and my second one is for Mandarin which I just started learning. Do I have to have two notebooks for each language ?
Cause I already planned on getting other books when these one run out

I have my notes with what we're doing in class, then a notebook where i write down all the grammar and another notebook where i do exercises. i ALSO have a litten vocabulary booklet where i write down the vocabs from our textbook and other vocabs my teacher uses. when specifially learning vocabs, i write them down on an extra sheet, usually chapter-wise because this is how we are told to learn them for the next lesson. sometimes theme wise like honorific forms of words. (extra note to vocabs: super new and unusual for me to do because i never really learned vocabulary ever in school). and when it's around exam time, i make like an extra sheet with everything we learned/everything necessry to know for the exam.
not really sure about markers, i haven't found a good system yet.
but sir, may i ask why half of your neck is orange/yellow-ish and the other half is white ? 😳

I have three notebooks. The first one for my lesson notes, the second one for song lyrics and K-Dramas notes, and my third one is where I track my progress.
Also a quick question; Digital notebooks or paper notebooks? Which one is better?

I soo needed this! Little by little I’m learning Hangul. I need a little more practice, but I barely started this week. However, I’m struggling in knowing what to do after I learn the basic alphabet or Hangul. Do I learn the structures of sentences? Someone help.

It can mean many things depending on the context. It could be from 가다 "to go" and mean "go."
