When I had a tutor, we had established a routine of me doing my journal entry and taking/sending a picture of it to her before class. We started the class with the journal and it was super helpful because I did the journal either the night before or before the class. You only need to write one page. I used to leave one page blank on the right so I could rewrite the sentences after class using the corrections. I recommend doing the journal if you can get feedback either the same day or the next day so it all stays fresh. Like Billy said, if you don't get feedback you'll likely repeat mistakes.
I also agree that constantly correcting your student isn't efficient. The student won't always remember the mistake. I only correct my students a few times, and mostly AFTER she is done speaking so I don't cut off her train of thought. Also don't give her the correct answer, just lead her to it. Once she discovers the error by herself, she is more likely to remember it
Thank you for the advice. This sounds like a great way to improve your skills. Until now, i just randomly wrote some sentences regarding my daily life. I will implement writing a journal to my daily routine and ask my tutor for corrections. 😊👍
My biggest tip as a learner with ADHD: don't get a separate journal! I use a Hobonichi Cousin as my daily planner which has a ton of space for writing. It's also a grid paper which is even better for writing Korean. I write my to do lists, journal about my day, and then include a few checklist items in Korean, and a few sentences in Korean as well. Since I have to use it every single day, and there's a page for every day of the year, it doubles as tangible practice with the passing of time built right in :)
Writing journal is definitely the best way to learn and improve. When I first started with my online tutor, he would messaged me when I missed a journal 😂. But now, I’m writing a journal everyday and he would correct them for me. The journal can be something you’ve learnt in class this week, and practicing using what you’ve learned. For someone like me who is having a hard time in remembering things, writing journal everyday has definitely helped me in improving my Korean learning.
I write in my journal around once a week. These days I don’t have the time to sit through long Korean lessons teaching grammar but I’m still improving my Korean through journaling every week
I recently started writing journals in Korean after watching one of your videos reviewing and correcting some. The first few were easy to get a whole paragraph out (if a bit time consuming due to my relative beginner status and second guessing myself every sentence) because I was in the middle of a trip and had a bunch to talk about, but after I got back, I ran into the same issue you mentioned. I just did the same things everyday and ran out of daily things to write about. I appreciate the suggestions for other topics. My tiny bit of advice is this: Don't worry about vocabulary too much as you're writing, especially as a beginner. I personally have a tendency to repeat the same or similar words when practicing writing sentences because I end up subconsciously trying to only use vocabulary that I already know and can come up with off the top of my head. Which I don't think is too helpful for me in the long run. So, when I wrote my first few journals, I tried to just think about what I wanted to say, and if I realized that I didn't know a vocabulary word, I would look it up and add it to a list of new vocabulary to study. I got to practice writing and forming sentences, and also learned some new vocabulary that I was even able to use in a later journal because I remembered how to say it. It's very fun to look at a page of Korean text and go "I wrote all that." Very satisfying.
My TODO list is as follows I revise new & old vocab (nouns/adjectives/verbs/phrases) everyday & constantly add to the list Active listening everyday Reading everyday Dictation everyday Watch Korean content with Ksubs everyday Read content that shows 'grammar in use" everyday Learn two new grammar forms every 3 days and constantly try to make sentences using them, & I've noticed a huge improvement because I form sentences so much quicker now I watch Korean variety shows as a hobby, so I always jot down new expressions & words that I learn from there & add it to my vocab
Just wanted to say that I just finished your first book and will be getting the second one today! It's the first time I've finished a full book! As someone autistic, it's been so hard to self study without getting bored or losing focus/motivation halfway through... Your book is so engaging and fun, I feel like I'm finally making good progress ❤ Thank you~~
Although I'm not studying Korean now, keeping a language journal is such an amazing idea! I'll be tweaking your tips for my Norwegian journal. Thank you❤
I’ve been trying to use journaling to study for the longest time but I always end up either not writing anything because idk what to say or when I do write it’s barely anything, so I’m happy about this video!
I try to write Journals/Diaries, because my italki tutor also requested it. But the problem is, I dont experience many interesting things so there isnt a lot to write about. But this video helped me to look at from a new perspective. Thank you
Definitely didn't expect a TF2 mention in this video. 😂 I keep saying I'm going to journal in Korean, but whenever I sit down and strongly consider it, I can't think of anything to write. This video has given me some ideas to start with and I'm really hoping it'll improve my Korean because I am struggling. Thanks.
I used to journal in English back then when I was trying to learn English but not very often since I was afraid someone would read it and get what is written but nowdays I'm learning Japanese I know almost no-one nearby can read it or understand it lol, it is kinda cute to see your own mistakes months later
I wanted to start writing a journal, but I always struggle to find topics since I spend most of my time inside. The prompts and explanations in this video inspires me to finally really start one. It'll be great to see a write-along video or a writing example entry video to see how the writing forms are constructed. thanks in advance, always love your videos, Billy Ssaem!
Your rules were so helpful. I often get fustrasted and give up eititng because I want to be 'correct'. Instead, I should focus on just practicing writing sentences. The rest will follow in tome as I learn more, practice more and gain confidence
😂 small sourdough tip on the side: 10g starter 25g white flour 25g wholewheat rye flour 50ml water (For starter maintenance) And for the first few breads add some yeast, it will get better and you will be able to do it without. And a dutch oven is key. 😂 good luck
Thank you! I've been wanting to start a Korean journal since I unfortunately don't have very many options for practice, but I've never really known where to start! This helps a lot!!!
Thanks Billy. I have tried writing a journal but I just lacked the confidence to keep at it. These are some wonderful tips, some I've heard before. I will definitely give it a try again as it's wonderful output and a good way to document my progress. Thanks, again.
My no.1 tip for 7:19: Use chat gbt! Chat gbt may have many weaknesses, but it can correct texts even better than you tandem or hello talk partners. In my university chat gbt is currently revolutionizing language learning and language teaching work. I think you should be at least intermediate to use it appropriatly, but I think this could be a very interesting topic for you as well, billy!
Thank you, Billy! This was very helpful. Like so many others, I've been loathe to start a journal because I'm still a beginner and I've felt as though I wouldn't have much to write about. You've given me the inspiration to begin! 감사합니다!
I just started writing a journal yesterday because something funny happened and I wanted to write it in Korean. Day 2 of writing and this video shows up kismet 😅
I'm working on re-establishing my Korean speaking. Thx for this vid.😊 Patreon page. Hobbies. Goals. Games, Movies. Beginners & Advanced.😂 Year, Month, Day.👍 Plain language/text than personal.👍 Non-emotional endings.👍 나 than 저.👍Then CHECK!🍜🥟🍬
WAIT!!! You play TF2???? Awesome!! Though I've not played it for maybe 10 years? Also thank you so much for these tips. I tried a little bit in a challenge we did over in BA (discord), but I'm still such a lightweight that I mostly used English while adding Korean words. Trying to expand into more full Korean sentences. I really struggle still with writing sentences, but it goes a lot faster as I progress. Oh! Even if you've said it (multiple) times before it can do with a reapeat "when making full sentences, don't think in English". As a none native English speaker: "You just can't force the translation" is something that ressonates with me.
thank you for this billy! i just started keeping a journal but i've only written one entry and that was weeks ago ^^; so this is really helpful. i'm only an intermediate beginner or so so i don't know much but i want to practice thinking and writing more in korean. i will be sure to do these things, thanks!!
My journals are a twitter and an Instagram profiles that I created for practicing more. It ends up I also interact with other language learning fellows and native ones too.
I started doing this a few months ago but i always tried to use 존댓말 so it often got complicated and when i translated it wouldn't make much sense. Therefore these tips are really helpful iI believe if I implement them it would get easier to write and i dont have a schedule per say I just write one when I feel too.
What would you recommend for practicing the grammar and vocabulary you’re learning? That’s what I need the most practice with, I think, although I’m going to try this, too.
Hi Billy, you mentioned after finishing the 100 video playlist you will be at a A1 level and if you practiced a lot maybe A2. To which TOPIK levels do these A1 and A2 levels correspond?
I've tried writing journals both for Korean and Mandarin, but I'm not a person to keep journals for any reason. Fften I find myself putting it off or dreading writing journal entries because I either can't think about what to write or I get frustrated during the process because I either don't know words in my target language or get confused on the word order/conjugation and end up giving up on writing. I'm trying to get back into the habit, but it's a slow process.
If my main goal is just to commit words & grammar to memory, and speak them out loud to get use to speaking, can the "journal" be a note document on the computer or phone? I do plan to practice physically writing, but at the moment it is not an immediate need for me.
hmmm personally I hate writing with a pen lol but when I learn new lessons, I have to write it down on a paper, and that's helped me write Korean faster. As for writing on a phone/computer, its useful too. So I'd suggest you do both. Because I also speak Arabic, but my handwriting is really horrible because i only type on my phone
How do you go about writing a journal when you’re not fluent? I’ve tried doing a journal but it just turns into Papago writing the journal and I feel like it’s not helping me.
Don't let someone else (Papago) do your learning for you. Journals are always at the level you're currently at, and you can use a dictionary to help you find words but I'd avoid any tool that simply writes for you.
It's a more suitable form since you don't have to necessarily express politeness or lower yourself in respect. Unless you're explicitly addressing your text towards your followers, then it would be ok to use the ~요 ending, for example.
If you don't know it yet, don't feel the need to use it - it's better to just practice something. Once you know more, you can write it more like a native Korean would, but at least it's still helping you to get practice :)

Hi there

Do you have to use the plain form ( 다 ) when writing a journal or is it not necessary
I mean you can also play soccer with a basketball, but you usually use a football :P
