- What are your goals for learning Korean? Why are you learning it? Many people have asked me how to set study goals, and how long they should study Korean every day. I met up with Hyunwoo (from Talk To Me In Korean) and got his insight on studying Korean and setting goals.

I'm a 62 year old retiree with plenty of time to study. I finished Billy's "Korean Made Simple"(book 1) in 6 months while concurrently taking Korean continuing ed classes at my local community college. I hit the wall on book 2 around chapter 3 and decided to "start over" with my studies. Hyunwoo had mentioned in previous videos about how short term obtainable goals were more important than unobtainable "long range" goals ("I want to be native-like fluent") so, in May I came up with a 100 Day Plan: 1. During my morning walk I listen to TTMIK app. I come home and make example pages of material covered. 2. Do one Airilang "Let's Speak Korean" (1999) episode per day. (RUclips) 3. Cover one verb per day using TTMIK's 2 part verb book; conjugating each verb to its요,고있어요,ㅆ어요,을거예요,세요,고 싶어요,을수있어요,and 지마세요 form.
This 100 day plan expires on 2 Sept but needless to say, life gets in the way and I have fallen more than 30 days behind on this plan. Next month, I will readjust a newer, more obtainable 100 day plan. But who cares, because I have found the perfect study plan: to speak better Korean tomorrow than I did today.
That's such a brilliant method for learning ~
I'm still quite young and so things like school work and study and extracurricular activities get in the way of my educational progression in terms of language.
I think my goal for now is going to be something along those lines ~ creating a 100 day (or some form of time period), manageable plan to direct my focus.
Don't ever feel bad about falling behind, because it's a bit inevitable. I don't know whether or not you have continued your studies since you posted this, but if so, I wish you well in your language planning.

6:40 as Hyunwoo said, there are some elders who learn english... oh so thats why when i came to korea and i was in subway some elder woman came to me and started talking english. we started to have normal conversations and i was shocked bc her english was not bad at all!
At the hospital this very nice older man started talking to a bunch of us in English. It was excellent.
wow! the same thing happened to me. My 귀여운 아줌마/할머니 even helped me find a government funded korean teaching class. I used it to suppliment the other expensive classes I was taking at a language Hagwon
I wish to visit Korea, so I am learning Korean to interact more easily with the people and to absorb the experience better...

Every language you know the basics of or have at least minimal understanding of is worth it. It's great for your brain and you do get a better understanding of another culture - even if you're not fluent :)
I realized with this video that I didn't have any defined goals. I would just work through the ttmik workbooks and just keep moving. When I got to the end of the available books I was like "what now?" I realize I didn't know how to move forward. So I'm setting a goal right now - to be able to speak to the Korean customers in Korean at the coffee shop where I work. Hopefully my drive to learn Korean picks up again

When school started to teach me English when I was 10 I thought it was so dumb and that I would never use it. Then I reached a moment where words I learned showed up in the music and TV shows and it gave an instant gratification I had never felt before so the goal to recognize more and words just grew. Soon enough I was avoiding subtitles and translating lyrics and singing along gave me my pronounciation. Now at 32 I live in the US and am extremely fluent and found myself missing that nostalgia of recognizing new words and feeling that sense of pride so yet again I have the same goal; to get away from subtitles and to understand my favorite songs. It is surprisingly powerful but my small goal is to feel that feeling again of recognizing words. :) And it is happening!
I realized, through this video, that my reason for learning Korean is to be able to connect with other humans in a different language. I have studied several languages in the past and Korean is the only one that I've stuck with this long and with this much enthusiasm. That enthusiasm began from listening to Kpop but I have continued my Korean learning journey because I love being able to connect with others whose mother tongue is not English.
I speak Spanish and started learning English 25 years ago. Although I did end up attending college in the US, when learning a second (or more) language is all about repetition, practice, practice and then some more. Lots of reading, lots of listening. Never get caught up in the "oh, my accent sucks". Having an extensive vocabulary is far more valuable than your "accent". Now I am trying to learn Korean and recently signed up with TTMIK. Hope I can conquer this! :-)
Took a beginner conversational Spanish class. Later took beginner German class. Found myself remembering more Spanish than I thought I had learned.
I like how you both mentioned the "Why" for learning a language. Even though I knew the answer, I never asked myself the question before. As for goals, I remember from a video on willpower, to set manageable goals for yourself and study at your own pace that's comfortable to you. Even if you only learn a few words, phrases, or grammar a day, it adds up in the long run, weeks and months down the road.
I love this! I’ve been learning Japanese for 4 1/2 years, but I really want to get into Korean too. My mother-in-law is Korean, and while she lives in the states and can speak English, I’ve always wanted to be able to speak to her in Korean. Her own kids can’t even speak it, so I kinda want to beat them and speak to her in Korean. ^_^
My city (Atlanta) also has a high Korean population, and I think I’d be able to use it more here than Japanese.

I want to be able to watch my kdramas without the English subtitles on, maybe that’s too vague? (I’m using both of yours teaching materials! Great to see you guys in a vid together)
Worgiewoo it's a pretty big goal, seems suitable for a 'why', but I think an immediate goal can be like, watch x minutes of dramas today without English subs, write down new words, etc
My goal right now is to communicate better in Korean. To take it beyond a few simple phrases. And I know that good things take time so I've let myself off from the pressure of Learning fast.
My goal is to understand the conversations in kdramas. And understand my favourite idols. Is this a meaningful goal? I actually don't have like very strong goals but this is why I wanna learn Korean. Is this okay? Or a waste of time.

Thank you for this video! It made me think a little deeper about the goals I had and have. I often differenciate between reading, writing, listening and speaking goals. One recent goal in reading was to be able to read my favorite webtoons and understand not every single word but what's going on without having to look up anything. For webtoons with school settings I'm able to do this now (history/fantasy webtoons are the worst though so I just ignore them haha) so my next goal will be easy novels. I bought 82년생 김지영 last year when I was in Korea since I was very curious about it so I want to reach a level where I understand at least the most important things. Also, I have to level up my writing so that it matches my reading level. Listening I practice with the Iyagi series at the moment, it's the best while walking the dog haha. After that I maybe can move on to K-dramas or movies. And for speaking I want to be able to hold simple conversations about topics that interest me, like Korean politics, history or current social issues.

But if someone does dislike it, I'd love to know why so that I can do a better job~ I think just most of my subscribers are friendly people so we don't see too many dislikes or trolls here.

I found this video to be really helpful and inspiring. I was afraid that maybe my goals weren't good enough. Right now my two goals are to memorize one Korean song, and get through my first TTMIK workbook. So hearing you say those goals are valid really made me feel better. Thank you!
저는 작년부터 좋아하는 아이돌이랑 영상통화 몇번 했는데 language barrier 때문에 좀 힘들어서 한국어를 공부해야한다고 생각했어요. 이젠 한국어를 공부한지 1년 됐고 좋아하는 아이돌이랑 5번 정도 한국어로 대화했어요!!!! 아직 많이 부족하고 한국어로 말할 땐 너무 긴장되는데 목표를 달성해서 기쁘고 뿌듯해요 ㅎㅎㅎㅎ
I learn it because I like how it sounds and I love K-hip-hop.
Since korea has been place that i wanna live for 5 yrs now, and I LOVE language learning, i’m learning korean if i would have a chance to ever live there or stay for a couple of years. and i think korean is very intresting language and fun to learn. I already have lithuanian, english and french besides me but i think korean is the most fun thing i learn now :) i just wanna be able to have normal conversations with my friends
Why do you want to learn Korean?

I am a super new beginner, but I like to use different resources as well. Often there are things missing from one, so I will go to another. Also my short attention span gets burnt out easy, but I keep coming back to it. I do have a few goals, but I am very shy at times, so it is hard for me to actually say it out loud..
Great video! Goal setting and knowing your 'why' is very important I think with anything you're trying to attain. My goal is very general, but my 'why' pushes me to want to learn Korean and enjoy the experience. Thank you @ttmik and @GoBillyKorean for your experience and knowledge!

My only goal at this point is speaking Korean as comfortably enough as I do Spanish, preferrably in less than 5 years. I don't expect fluency until year 10, although I do learn languages quickly.
Year #4, a year later and conversation level a bit more decent but have a ways to go.

So would a goal of wanting to visit Korea someday and just being able to have tiny conversation be too much? Not a big complex conversation, but just a simple “Hi I’m _____. I like games and watching shows, how about you? Alright well it was nice to meet you! Goodbye.” Kind of conversation lol.

Hey, I don't know if you're still learning, but don't be! Just relax and have fun learning. Don't be too comfortable nor too challenged while studying. Try to find that sweet spot in between challenging and comfortable. You can do it!

I find I enjoy a challenge and look forward to learning more than just Hangul (where I'm at them moment)

I just bought a couple of ttmik books today sooo excited!!!
I learn korean, because i wanted to learn a language very different to german and its also pretty. My goal is to conversate and understand korean.
I started learning Korean because of 3 reasons. First because I wanted to understand the lyrics if the music I was listening to. Other reason is because I love learning languages. I see it like a portal to a whole new world besides mine. And lastly, but not less important, I believe the workd is going to need more people that knows Korean because of the Korean wave. It gives the opportunity to unite people. Does this thought makes sense?
I'm having a little trouble with this because i find Korean grammar to be reeeally easy, but i'm finding learning vocabulary and reading fluently to be a little more difficult. I'm using some flashcard apps to help with that, however I feel like I'm learning aimlessly.

Hi Billy! I have a question for you. But before I ask it, I just wanted to say thank you so much for answering my comment a few weeks ago! It really made my day :). So I have always had a passion and want to learn another language. I was previously in a major I was unhappy with, so I changed to the Global Studies major because with that I could do things such as translating, interpreting, etc. I do not have a clear goal yet on what I want to do with Korean, but I would like to make it a big part of my life somehow, potentially in my career if possible. I am very fearful I may have made a bad decision, but it also feels like I'm on a path now in which I have passion. My question for you is, how did you know that you made the right decision in choosing Korean as your life's main passion?
I knew I made the right decision after I started to make some good Korean friends who'd hang out with me because of who I was (and not just because I spoke Korean). After a few years I realized I actually had more Korean friends than friends from America.

I want to learn korean language, because i want to work in korea and also want to see my kpop idols. korean language is like an art for me and it is very interesting to learn. I'm filipina from philippines which is my mother tongue is Tagalog and i can understand basic english language. i hope someday i can converse well in English and korean language. K let me break this down for me....
8 years ago when I was 4 I decide to learn Chinese(I speak Malay as native and English as scndary) and have no idea that I can speak like native. But 8 years of effort, making friend with native Chinese has brought me here I stand today talking Chinese like native everyday, surviving daily life with Chinese and passing my big exam in Chinese
So the thing is I just repeat it with korean and Japanese?

We do not teach grammar in America until you are in 6th grade and that is how we learn but if you do not have access to a native speaker at least get sentence structure right. We learn basic words of objects first (mom, dad, drink, eat, light, ball, car etc..) then we are taught the alphabet, then the sound of the letters. By then we are putting together small 2-4 word sentences. We go all the way till we are around 12-14 years old before we bother with grammar classes and study. But Korean is kicking my butt LOL I can sing songs in Korean, I know some basic words like hello, thank you, but actually talking or reading it not happening after 3 years. I can sound a word out cause I know the letters but what that says, no clue LOL

yeah, it's super easy and yet I can NEVER remember it. Just like I can never remember the word for marriage. It is weird.

Many Korean words are compound words, especially that originate from Chinese
