  • Today’s episode is all about J-Hope, the dance captain in BTS known for his rapping.
In this series I analyze the Korean speaking of the music group BTS (방탄소년단). As a Korean teacher I’ll share my opinions on how each member sounds, what dialect they use (if any), as well as any unique expressions, and their personalities while speaking Korean.

Hobi is just King of Vocalizations... in addition to using filler words frequently, he frequently provides his own sound effects to day-to-day life (which is just adorable).
And yes, he's a walking ball of solar energy a lot of the time, but you just need to read his lyrics to know he's got a serious side as well (and a shadow side).
It's also just as likely Hobi picked up his dialect from his peers-- he started at a dance school in like 5th grade and joined Neuron (a street dance crew in Gwangju) at around 14. The school was an hour away by bus, and sometimes he'd spend so long practicing that he'd crash at a friend's place instead of going home.

J-hope is my ult bias and I find it interesting that he uses "사실" as a filler word because, if I'm being honest it kind of reminds me of how I tend to use the word "honestly" or phrases like, "to tell the truth" and "to be honest" when I'm speaking. It actually some people crazy how often I use them, if I'm being honest, but it's honestly just how I speak, and I think that's really cool that me and Hobi have that in common especially since now I know what word to use in place of all my "honestly" when I'm speaking korean

I'm not sure that J-Hope was a good student but living in a home with a literature teacher must have had an effect on his language. His dialect, however, is more likely to have come from his school friends and the street crew he danced with. I presume that, Jimin, one of the Busan boys, will be next. Although he doesn't use his Busan satoori much these days that should be interesting.

Hello, I'm curious to know if something I've noticed JHope doing is cultural or simply a personal habit of his...maybe you will know.
When someone is speaking to JHope, he is a very "active" or "vocal" listener. He doesn't interrupt necessarily but he is usually making a sound after every sentence or during any pause in the other's speech . You may not have seen enough clips to notice, but if so, is this common or just a Jhope thing? Lastly, I've heard his father teaches Korean also. Would you have known that from the way JHope speaks or the vocabulary he uses?
Thanks so much! I am really enjoying your BTS videos.

It's fun, bc I'm a big fan of BTS, but I also just think that analyzing native speakers' way of speaking as individuals is one of the best ways to really get to know a language. It's informative in ways a normal "standard" class just can't cover. The choices you make as an individual in any language are the biggest part of how you sound, and getting a fuller snapshot like this (esp since they're from different regions) is so so cool! Thank you for making this series! I'd honestly watch more of these about groups I don't even know! @@GoBillyKorean Awesome! I’m trying to get there. Currently I’m very interested in sentence structure and trying to wrap my head around the topic and subject markers. I haven’t found the right explanation yet that really makes sense to me ☺️😇 Honorifics are the next mountain to climb after that

Okay, but why would you reignite my BTS phase in the most neurodivergent way possible?
Not that I'm complaining, of course, but man, I haven't felt this little excited nerd in me for a long time now...

You mentioned the 이 ending. I noticed while watching a Kdrama that the grandmother from the country was called 할모이 instead of 할머니 would that be due to dialect? I’m still a beginner so hopefully I spelled these properly.

J-Hope's dad is literature teacher and Hobi writes in Cursive Hangul, that's why his Handwriting looks messy, his Dad teached him, it's a skill that usually Woman of Age have, it's not common anymore.

Hello, I really love your channel and really enjoy watching your videos. I especially love the ones like this, where you analyze how K-Pop idols speak, like BTS and Stray Kids. I was wondering if you could consider also analyzing a group called Golden Child? (If you’d like a specific member to analyze, Jibeom uses a dialect) Thank you for doing these videos and I’m looking forward to more in the future!!

이 분 한국말이 원어민 수준인데… 다른 영상을 봐도 어휘 수준도 상당히 높고 특히 동사 활용형에 대한 이해도 상당하시네요. 힌국에서 오래 사신 분 같네요. 근데 난 한국인인데 왜 추천영상으로 떳는지 의문이네요 ㅎ

When singing along to BTS's music, I've always found J-Hope to hardest to understand, so I agree with Billy here. I've really been enjoying your videos, by the way! 🙂

I have been enjoying your content about the Koran language through BTS and how, while all native speakers, each member speaks differently. Suggestion for a future video: Ni-Ki, from BTS sister group Enhypen, is the youngest member from Japan. He spoke no Korean at first and his members have been helping him learn Korean alongside him taking Korean classes. I think it would be interesting to go over his progress over the past few years ( 14 when started and is now 17).

Wow I had no idea he used the most dialect. But I also haven't heard the Jeolla dialect used as much so I probably missed it. I will definitely listen for it now!
