  • Today’s episode is all about Jimin, who’s known in BTS for his dancing skills.
In this series I analyze the Korean speaking of the music group BTS (방탄소년단). As a Korean teacher I’ll share my opinions on how each member sounds, what dialect they use (if any), as well as any unique expressions, and their personalities while speaking Korean.

There's a running theory around the fandom that Jimin writes more formally when addressing the fans to hopefully make his message easier to translate. Jimin's messages and letters are the ones that auto-translate works best with.

As you can see from Billy's video, Jimin is the one who uses honorifics most routinely and consistently. In Korea, it is said that '예의범절' is important, and the reason for this seems to be explained a lot in his growing up environment. He first studied martial arts such as "Kendo" and "Hapkido" for a long time from a very young age, and even in modern times in Korea, the group that puts the most importance on manners is the people who learn martial arts. And the second is school. Especially, he majored in dance at an art high school. In schools with 'modern dance/ballet major' like Korean art high schools, the rules between seniors and juniors are even more strict. Because of his background, it is a habit for him to keep very strict courtesy to his brothers and seniors. Therefore, his personality is a factor that can be easily adapted even in the military, one of the strictest places in Korea. So I think Jimin will do very well in the army.

When you said Jimin is a perfectionist. You ain't wrong. Jimin himself admitted to being one. I don't necessarily view it as something negative. However, Jimin has this habit of overexerting himself to the point of sacrificing his health. As someone who has been his fan for quite a long time now, I can say he has gradually made it upon himself to love himself more now (his FACE album is an excellent example of his inner thoughts). I am very glad to be his fan since he's an inspiration to me. Someone who is already very talented but amidst all that, he isn't slacking in any way nor form, to the point people call Jimin "The Hardworking Genius".

I think jimin often enjoys joking by speaking more formally to amp up the dramatic effect as well :) I think Korean Army may have noticed this too, but one of my favourite speech habit of Jimin is when he says ‘그러머는’ and ‘하머는’ instead of ‘그러면’ and ‘하면’. He even spells it as “하‘머’는“ the way he speaks. It’s not quite a Busan dialect so I think it’s just his own little quirk or possibly a family dialect? It’s super adorable :)

@@jaysax7381 it’s not his formality at writing what makes him more easy to understand by auto translators. You can write informally and still be grammatically correct. But yes you are right we are not ‘technically close’ but I don’t feel it that way! and that’s why in my head I would like him drop that kind of language when he speaks to us but I understand why he does it, he’s just kind to everyone and that’s his way to show respect for other people. Please read my comment this is what I was trying to say.

He’s a cutie, isn’t he! He is perhaps a tad fastidious and longwinded? I believe it’s because he is so polite and therefore sometimes comes through as vague/layered. I may be wrong.

😊Jimin ssi is very polite when he speaks and I think that’s cool! It fits him. It was the first thing I noticed when I started to get the polite levels down. I also feel like it does make it easier to translate, and sometimes it seems he does that so I-ARMY can translate. (Maybe idk) It just makes him more princely IMO. 😊 His mannerisms are very calm, so yeah I can see that. Love the series!

Thank you Billy. Absolutely loving your ‘BTS’ series, and as Jimin is my bias, I loved this even more. He’s one of the sweetest, kindest, most caring, compassionate and wonderful humans there are. Thank you again. Looking forward to Kim Taehyung next.💜

Jimin runs his letters by the staff - & writes them so they are easy to translate for anybody not Korean💜💜- he does this all the time (& always errs on the polite form💜💜)- probably bc when he first wentto Seoul, people would criticisehis accent (& say it could sound impolite🫣💜 - & he had a bit of a hard time with all that, bless his angel-faceu 💜💜PJM worked v hard to even things out & moderate his tone - so he's always careful & they have/had a lot of media training, & he's usually v careful not to let it show too much - even though every time his accent slips out we all swoon🙊💜🥰💜
    (Kim Taehyeong even
says on Camera several times: that his own Manager says he "Shouldn't use that Country (Daegu) Dialect"🥺💜 - but that's his Manager; certainly his
    Manager has him copy everything
else PJM does on stage - to the point where it gets a bit ridiculous but there it is🙄💜🤭💜
Our Jimina is the Most Talented anywhere👑💜 with the most beautiful voice🎉💜& is endlessly cool & obvs with doubt is the most beautiful man on the Planet🌏💜 I would suggest you do many more videos of PJM; bc that's a sure way to guarantee millions will watch!🤭💜🙏🏻💜🇬🇧💜

Enjoyed this video a lot. Jimin has always been polite and you can really tell that he's a good person inside out. Jimin is the guy that every parents would want as a son in law and every woman's dream guy👑❤

You are right about Jimin. You learn a lot about people by listening to how they speak. He is a perfectionist and tries extremely hard to do anything that he does. That very well can be why he is very polite. He works at it. It’s amazing how you noticed that about him just by listening to his speech. Though in this series you keep reminding us that you’re not a native speaker, but you have been speaking Korean for eighteen years. Though I am a beginner, I think you’re doing an awesome job!

I loved this! Jimin's dialect is so comforting to me. I also like how you spoke of his politeness. I would enjoy more clips on Jimin's speech. I think that I'd pay more attention if Jimin's way of speaking was used to learn Korean but you are a close 2nd teacher in my opinion. I have listened to you on Spotify. Thanks for this short video 📹

I have been watching your videos when I have free time since I discovered your channel more than a year ago. But I’ve been busy with work the past month so imagine my surprise as a long-time BTS fan when I saw your BTS Analyzed series!
It’s so timely too that you released analysis on Jimin right around his solo debut (partly the reason that I went back online too!)
Can’t wait for your analyses on Taehyung and Jungkook. Korean speakers tend to comment a lot on how unique Taehyung expresses himself. And then for Jungkook, people have mentioned he can be playful but still respectful towards his hyungs (especially Jin and Jimin).
Looking forward to your videos! 💜

Loving this series! I was really looking forward to Jimin's episode, as I've always had the feeling he'd be the easiest to understand (if I was fluent in Korean!). It's is tone, his choice of words, and the way he puts together sentences - just like many have already mentioned, his letters and written messages are easily translated by the auto translate tools.
I also enjoy his satoori sooooo much, as I feel he enjoys using it in a playful manner ☺
I am now really curious about next episode, I have a feeling you'll have a lot of things to say about Tae's unique language!
