The tip about not copying everything you see in a textbook is so important. I used to do it with Genki, and it was so time consuming (and unnecessary). That time could've been put into making flashcards on Anki. Luckily, I realized it wasn't a good idea to do that by lesson 3. Better late than never, I guess.

I have the beginner version of this book and it's totally amazing! It teaches you how Korean sentences are formed and then conjugating verbs and adjectives. What I also really like about this book is that it has colors and illustrations unlike other textbooks that only have full texts which are too overwhelming to read. The old ver. of this book has Audio cd but as for me, I have the new version which doesn't include the cd but allows you to download audio files from their website.

To those who like writing in pen but hate having cross-outs, I recommend to try Frixion Ball erasable pens--they come in two different sizes and lots of colors, and are higher quality than any other erasable pens I've tried. I make loooots of mistakes while writing so simply being able to erase and end up with notes that don't look like a disaster zone is encouraging. :)

Im learning Korean right now in University. Its a condensed CONDENSED course. So we are supposed to know basic Korean in 11 weeks. Even though we are given resources, its super easy to fall behind. My prof is native Korean, has her PhD in English studies (We are in Canada) so sometimes when she is explaining things, its something we don't know/havent learnt, but she forgets that, because its such a simple concept ( like 이에요 / 여요 ) and we always have to be like WAIT !!! SLOW WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE AND WHEN DO WE USE IT?!?! :P So videos like this, and other resources REALLY help. so thank you (:

Hey Lindie! I'm trying to study Korean out of my own personal interest in the culture/language, and because I plan on studying abroad in South Korea as often as I can when I get into college. Right now, I am starting my senior year in high school, but I self-study Korean in my spare time.
I am very studious and I wanted to know how you keep all of your notebooks organized? For example, grammar, vocabulary, practice notebooks, etc. I still have a hard time pronouncing Hangul, but I write more than I actually speak. As a beginner to the language, what would you recommend I study after Hangul? I was looking at my Korean books (I use a lot of Korean books from Tuttle, like: Korean Grammar, Korean For Beginners, and Korean Flash Cards [+ Korean Verbs (with their conjugations) soon]) and my mind got overwhelmed with reading Korean and all the terms they used, such as particles, infinitives, etc. I know I should take it step by step but I get stressed/overwhelmed easily with the explanations and words.
I'm sure I have a lot more questions, but I don't want this comment to be too long. I love watching your videos! ♡

Audio. I benefit a lot from audio that comes with the book. To me, it is a perfect way to review grammar points when, for example, I am on a train or bus and I just listen to example sentences (review grammar points and any new vocabulary). And grammar explanation in Korean. I completely agree that reading grammar explanation in Korean helps a lot, I do it myself, it is at the back of the book. I even went back to the elementary book to read Korean explanation there as a review.

My grammar notebooks are very simple compared to yours. It means I'm risking learning some incorrect usages, but if I took the time that you do, I would quickly lose interest in using a notebook at all. Mine are actually pocket-sized (and water resistant, made by a company called Rite in the Rain) so that I can take them on walks and hikes, where I make up my own sentences aloud. As I learn more grammar and vocabulary (especially vocabulary targeted to my hobbies and lifestyle), I'm able to express more and more of my own ideas aloud until I find myself talking to myself in my target language fairly easily, and only translating from English when I try to say a sentence which contains grammar or vocabulary I've only half-learned.
For me, the most important thing about a notebook is to keep using it (i.e. review), not just fill it up and put it away.
However, I'm sure if I did it your way, my Korean and Japanese would sound more correct and natural to a native speaker. So, of course, your tips are good. Everyone should at least consider them. Thanks for sharing them.

I guess and found a soft copy of this book the korean grammar in use and found it to be organized, likable and easy to understand so I'm buying it. The problem here is now I am overwhelmed of which reference should I use? The old book that I bought that found it confusing or the new book that found it easy to understand? I think I just wasted a lot of money in these books that's why I don't know where to start.

But recently I bought one textbook and started studying it again. It feels so nice to get back to it because I love learning languages and actually I wasn't forgetting Korean too much. i started using this book but i'm a little disappointed in the jump in difficulty from the first book. it uses grammar that comes later in the book in the example sentences which is really disappointing and makes me feel like i can't really use it... :/

Hello. In my country there is no book in my language and it is very expensive. I found the pdf on the internet, but it doesn't have the answers at the end.
Would you or someone who has this book, could take a picture and save to google drive and share the link.
I would like to correct the exercises that I answered in the book.
    Thanks ^^

Hi Lindie. I have a question about using KGIU for TOPIK II exam. Do you think the KGIU series is useful for TOPIK II preparation? I have to get at least 5급 and from where I'm from, there are no TOPIK books sold at all and no 한국어 학원 too ㅠㅠ Plus due to this ongoing pandemic, Amazon etc don't ship them here ㅠㅠ
Hope you notice this comment and thank you in advance for your kind reply ^^

I know this is not the right video to ask this question but I desperately need an answer... I would like to learn both Traditional Mandarin and Japanese but I don't know which one to start studying first... I really like both languages and the cultures of the countries equally so I am torn between them... I want to do this right though, not just learn a couple of words and call it a day. I would like to build a strong Hanzi and Kanji foundation, so which one of them is better to start with in order to do that? Difficulty is not an issue for me since I am doing this for fun, not because I have to. I cannot think of a better person to answer this question than you who has learned both of them. Finally, do you like Chinese or Japanese more and why?
    Thank you in advance!

I can talk from my own experience only. I started to learn Japanese some years ago and I didn't plan to learn Chinese so soon. Actually I wanted to learn Korean but I got the opportunity to join a Chinese evening class last year. First the Japanese grammar is so complicated that you cannot make full sentences and express yourself until you've accumulated a certain amount of sentence structures (not to mention vocabulary) and the way Japanese expresses some concepts can be a little confusing sometimes. This is a bit discouraging at the beginning. I felt that Chinese grammar was way easier. I could make simple sentences after a few lessons only. Then, Hanzi have only one pronunciation so it's easier to remember them as compared to kanji and their multiple pronunciations. Learning Chinese now helps me strengthen my knowledge about the Japanese kanji. I'm not sure I would have learned Japanese if I had learned Chinese before because I might have felt that it is too complicated.
I guess that if you learn Chinese first, it will help you to learn the Japanese kanji quickly because you will already know the meaning of most of them. It won't help you for the grammar part nor for the pronunciation (but Japanese pronunciation is easy).
Whatever you decide, I would advise you to feel comfortable enough in one language before starting the second one.
And now, I would also love to hear Lindie's opinion and tips!

Thank you for the reply. I don't mind if a language is difficult, I am willing to put the effort needed to learn it but I want to do it right. Since these are languages that require a long period of time to master I need to choose the most efficient way and begin from the language which will make my transition to the second language easier. I have 0 experience with asian languages though which makes this decision even harder... Not to mention that there is not a single forum where I can find a definite answer...

Hi Lindie, besides the alphabet, is there anything else that you can suggest learning first before jumping into grammar?

Hey Lindie! Im currently actively studying Japanese and Korean (my main focus is Korean) and I dont really know if Ive been making progress or not. Ive been using Duolingo and passing the levels, but I just forget them. How do I make these rules and exercises stick?

    • @niamhbutler5685

Bangtan.Chicken Do them ove again until you remember the structure but tbh I don’t think it’s that good because it doesn’t really explain anything so there’s nothing to remember ( unless you want to be remembering full sentences)

Use what you learn just passing the levels won't do it for everyone. Try to use and pick up what you learned by reading and listening. Even if you can't understand like 90% of what they are saying try to pick up the stuff you learned.

Sofia Summer yes I think you should learn that first since it's how the word sounds it doesn't make much sense to learn words and grammar but then you can't read the language not even a little .

What I do with my book is I highlight the important things and make notes on that. Then I do the example sentences in blue. And I also do the activities. Some are harder than others, but I try and do them without looking at the answers.
