for me personally, writing notes help me grasp the information. most of the time, I will read something and not obtain anything from it. however, when I actually read through it and re-write it, I find myself remembering the information better. I don't write everything word-for-word, but I basically create my own notes for better understanding.
I personally can’t memorize sh*t if I don’t write it down …. 😳 how can you not take notes when learning a completely new to you language?! Not my cup of tea srry 😳
Same here, it’s like I’m teaching myself as my ideal teacher through my own words in the way I best PERSONALLY comprehend. I’m basically just solidifying my own understanding in terms I learn from, rather than whatever context I’m learning from. Like my adaptation. PLUS all the info I’m learning is in one concise place, since I study from different sources.
I agree with not taking notes unless it’s absolutely necessary. I’ve been learning Chinese in class for about 9 months now. I don’t take notes at all, and I’m easily one of the top performers in the class. Obviously, it might be easier to not take notes with Chinese instead of Korean because the sentence structure is fairly similar, but honestly, I feel like all you need to do is listen to or watch videos when you hit difficult grammar points and you’ll be fine. I recently applied this method with Korean and my Korean has improved so much in just days. I’m easily learning 5-15 words a day through Korean music alone, and I’d probably learn more if I started watching k dramas. Humans are hardwired to acquire language no matter how impossible it seems. Native speakers might’ve taken classes that focus on their language as a whole which helped them improve, but they definitely did not come out of the womb with a pen and notebook in hand lol
in defense of note taking, i think it can be helpful to have your information in one place when you’re pulling things from several different sources. at least for me, if i’m using multiple websites and videos, i like taking notes for the sake of taking all the best parts of those sources and having one succinct place to find it, instead of having to go back through all of them.
It's nice to know I'm not the only one who doesn't take notes. I found early on in my Korean studies that I spent too much time writing notes when 9/10 I would just go back to the original source to read the explanation again. I do keep a word document of sentences that have a grammar pattern that I still need to memorize.
Yeah, I rarely looked back on my notes when I did take them. I prefer going back to the textbook or website to view the original explanation~ not to mention copying things down takes foreverrrr
Notes help with spelling and handwriting, help some people retain info (I need to write things down for them to really take root in my mind), help with concise points that I can quickly refer to when I forgot how a grammar point works
Taking notes results in me remembering things. This happens in my daily life as well. If I write something in my journal then I remember that event even years later.

Because it changed my language learning life, I think anyone learning a language should know about the idea of language acquisition. It was introduced by Steve Kaufman a couple decades ago. Him and his colleagues found that their students learned best when they understood the message, not necessarily the words or grammar, of what was being said in the language they were learning. I can't explain the whole concept here, but basically, acquiring a language (versus learning one) puts very little emphasis on studying grammar or flashcards. The idea is that you learn from context as you interact with media (books, articles, movies, etc) or people in your target language.
While i respect Steve immensely, he's talking about the stage when you've already built a nice grammar and vocabulary foundation. Then of course, working with a living and breathing language is more beneficial in developing context intuition. It doesn't work till you get to intermediate level.
I use Tandem to practice a little bit and it’s amazing to be able to message someone in Korean and ACTUALLY USE what you learned! It’s also nice to learn a bit more about Korean culture. :)
@@NataliaGarza true! And I also realized that some things, that I learned in a textbook may not be used as naturally in daily conversations as I thought and that they sound weird to natives. That was so surprising to me 😂

Absolutely agree! I used to be one of those people who'd take so many useless notes but eventually realised that we should focus on training our brains to acquire grammar, not learn it. It's useful to briefly read some explanations, a few example sentences, but once you know what the grammar structure does, the best thing is to just start immersing and hearing it used in context.
I just started learning Korean and my note taking practice is already quite out of the ordinary. Normally I take shortened notes from my resource (ttmik at the moment) and after a couple of days I rearrange and shorten them to the minimum and then write them down in my little "cheat book". Since I learn the best by writing everything down a thousand times it works great because I "copy and paste" the most important key points from the lessons multiple times and can look them up easily later on without having example sentences or unnecessary explanations in between. Anyone else having unusual note taking habits?
Thats not unusual, if you look around youtube a bit in the note taking/how to study genre on vids, like thomas frank or etc; you would find out that thats a ABSOLUTELY CORRECT way of taking notes. Taking what u just read/listen to/learned and rearranging it and simplify it and condensing it in a way that works best for you. That wat way u dont have to go back to the textbook, cause i gpt all the important stuff summarized and laid out in ur notebook, and dont have to read the whole paragraph to get the context. Just writing things down hasn't been proven to help with memorization, its analyzing, annotating, and then writting them down in a different and more helpful to yourself way that helps. THATS how to take notes. U are essentially making a study guide for yourself, and since YOU made it from scratch, u are much more likely to understand and remember. Since you had such an active role in its creation. Just annotating in a textbook that someone else wrote wouldn't usually work well. Since u didnt write the book, its easy for info to slip thru the cracks. I feel like the youtuber doesnt quite realize that notetaking isnt about copying what was said. Thats NOT taking notes, thats just copying/repeating. You have to actively, or (much better) eventually simplify/rearrange the info u learned. They have a whole essay of info? You make a table/chart/or bullet point of the important stuff that was said. I personally like to read a section/paragraph/etc first, then read again but this time higlighting or taking note of the important stuff (this is were u would just copy what was said, but its at least just the important stuff), then take all of those notes and remake them in a much better, simplified, and organized way that helps YOU understand and remember. What i like to do after that as review, is since i simplified it for myself, i have a much better idea of what a certain section was about, and so i would be able to give someone else the run down of it too. If you cant essentially "teach it" or explain it in a simple/general way to someone else (especially someone who knows nothing about the subject) then you maybe dont really understand as much as u thought. That this takes practice, lots of analyzing, and review. But starts with the good notes. I like to pretend to be teach someone else. It helped me more times than i could count in understanding concepts. Depending on how hard a subject is for u to learn/understand/remember, the more rewriting/rearranging/simplifying of what was said u may have to do to ensure u "get it".
I'm studying Korean but have taken zero notes so this was nice to hear. I've never been able to take notes for a long time (really makes my hand hurt cuz I write so hard) and I have a habit of not looking back at them anyways. Plus I figure if I have to commit it to memory anyways so may as well get to burning it into my brain as fast as possible:P Plus notes make it feel more like work and I try to keep it fun so I stay motivated.
I couldn't agree more with everything. I stopped taking notes because it was a waste of time. Now I put the example sentences on anki and that's it. Thanks for all the resources, they look very useful!
I wish I found note-takin more helpful, but for me they're just a waste of time and energy 😢 But luckily I've found a study method that works for me~ And it sounds like you found one that works for you too!
as for me i always do notes, copy almost everything what i think i should have in my notebook becuase i just cannot memorize things while looking at the screen and after that sometimes i watch some videos of korean teachers. Im too poor to buy a learning book or take online classes lmao
Classroom: I am listening, looking, speaking, having my brain in that space (and I may make some note to go look at x, y or z later because it's new info or it's something I am weak at). Self-study/solo study: I am reading, speaking, using apps, using a pen and paper, making connections....a lot. Just in class my brain can't do both. It's either neat notes that I can use later, or keep up with class. My class notes written notes have to be re-written to actually be understood haha!
Lol, im the TOTAL oppossite, I don't feel I understand until I take notes. I'm a very graphic person, so re-organizing the information in a visual diagram or graph that makes sense to me helps me not only remember but make the correct associations between what I already know and whats new. It's not bad advice, tho
Exactly, i feel like she didn't realize that she's not supposed to just stop at copying it word for word. She needs to eventually take the actually really important info and "do something" with it. Note taking is about making your own study guide, as a quick reference.
Lol i took a break from writing notes to watch this and ur points about note taking made me realized i learned and retained more thru just listening to podcasts and just watching yt vids then when id take notes and try to learn from those first. Its got reevalulating how i should study now.
I take notes bc just like u do, I learn the grammar from a myriad of resources so I like to summarize all of them in one notebook hehe and this makes it easier when I revise the grammar
Okay so, the first time I heard you say you don’t take notes I was like ?!HUH no way😐 But for the past few months it really started to get to me that I wasn’t applying what I learn and instead was taking way more effort and energy. I do write notes but it’s more like a super condensed version with MAYBE sample sentences that I keep in my digital notebook so if I need to reference it, I don’t need my textbook. With daily journaling, it’s starting to stick in my brain more. Anyways, so excited to watch y’all’s collab videos 🌸🤍🤗
Ok but this video was just what I needed right now! I just graduated college and I’m ready to take the summer to study up on some Korean for I go back to school in the fall. Girl thank you! You and your friends are out here driving up my motivation! 😆
majority of my learning has been through htsk and majority of my immersion has been with other korean learners so I fully connect with what you said in this video lmaooo
I'm glad that you mentioned "HowtoStudyKorean". I haven't found any reviews online and it's what I have been using. AND THEY HAVE CORRESPONDING YT VIDEOS!!!! It's great!!!!
Hey Natalia , what do you think writing a diary in Korean is a good habit for learning korean fast or is it waste of time ?? I hope you will answer , I've been learning Korean from 1 year now.
I do take notes, but I do that in my native language (Dutch). Unfortunately I have to learn Korean by English - Korean books. Even though a lot of things in Korean looks way more like Dutch and German (my third language).
Same here, we have a very similar language perception in Lithuanian, but there’s no resources, so I have to go through the less natural English one first.
I had paused on trying to learn but I still wanna teach myself different languages, and because of my learning style I want to start with Korean cause I already listen to the music and watch a lot of Korean entertainment, I’m trying to start when I have the actual motivation to, I plan on learning Japanese and Spanish later hehe
Yooooo it took me years to get my note taking strategy down, I wasted so much time rewriting stuff I didn't need to TT I find it so much more helpful just to write summaries or 'cheat sheets' I can refer back to quickly
Whispering : I think it's way more better than ttmik I agree with you, ttmik explanation is like touch and go,and they give very few examples of conjugations Thanks for your website tho😂 (Btw look at my profile picture, you'll know what it is)
I swear your timing with these videos I've been STRUGGLING lately with my Korean studies and have been wondering what I'm doing wrong? 😭😅 Also I feel attacked with the note taking, but I honestly do agree. I'm going to cut back/stop doing it.
@@NataliaGarza I'm definitely going to try it! I've noticed that a lot of my notes really are just taken from the books I'm using, so I'm only going to jot things down if I feel I really need to. Thank you for the tip, I'll comeback and let you know how it goes!
I take notes to read the book, i don't actually copy the whole book but just write important points. Make points instead of writing the whole paragraph. It help me to memorize well too 🌟 but i am still finding more better ways & resource to study Well honestly, everyone are different right?
ive been learning korean for a year and a half at uni, i major in translation and my second lang is korean. and i honestly dont know what to do, i do well in class, but i recently started taking topik 2 classes and everything is so hard, i have to translate the entire sentence of the exercise in order to just understand it. usually u would translate just 2-3 words, but i translte everythings cause i dont understand, and i dont really know how to learn vocabulary, i know a lot of words if i hear them, when im watching a drama i understand like 50% of what they say, and can understand almost everything from context. when it comes to reading and doing exercises im lost, i look at the textbook and i see characterst before seeing the actual words, and it so dissapointing cause ive known how to read korean for like 6 years. i always take notes of grammar, but i never look back on the,, most of them i understand immediately and i recognize grammar i studied in songs and dramas, shows etc. and if i have to write a simple essay, my mind will automatically know how to use x grammar or y grammar and also will remember words i thought i forgot. i used quizlet to memorise vocab but i forgot all of it almost, if i see it in a text, i remember but i cannot just use it when i need to. i dont know what to do and how to study honestly. eng is also not my first lang, and i just know it, i never had to study it like from scratch, one day i realized i know and understand english, but idk what to do and how to study korean. im supposed to be at least intermediate now, but i still think of myself as a begginer in terms of vocab and some grammar. kcneiucnaleifjcnalefjcn im gonna cry idk what to do
I agree with you about howtostudykorean website. Their grammar explanation is so good than compared to TTMIK. TTMIK is not bad but it shouldn't be your only resource while self-learning Korean because their explanations aren't enough for you to completely grasp everything. Go for more resources! There are lots of YT channels that do the explanation apart from howtostudykorean. Good luck to everyone learning Korean! Let's do this guys! ❤️
Can you please dedicate a video on how to stop translating ? I know you can put pictures on ítems to help with that but its not working for me. I hope i can get some tips since youve been studying for years 😊 Thank youuuuu❤
most of the books i got in korea for studying korean language don't have explanations. It has just a lot of grammar with few sentence samples and everything feel so rushed in the books. I learn so many new tips from you.
Ahhhh yes!! I think most Korean textbooks from Korean universities are like this 😢 Since they're meant for the classroom, they seem to expect the teacher to explain it all. Which is fine, except that many people try to use them for self-study
I'm really glad I found your channel!! I have a question I don't know how to stay motivated do you have any advice? also, I don't understand anything and I need everything explained to me but all of the things I use don't explain anything they just assume I know everything already!!!

Any website on Google where we can find so many practice sentence or tips ??? Plz tell me guys i really need 😭😭😭😭😭plz plz plz
I usually just write the grammar point I don't fully grasp and then gather up examples from all my various resources to break down under it. I'm just very visual and I need the notes when I don't get it lol

Not taking notes is a bad advice (for some people). If you write things down you will more likely not forget them so easily (like how word are spilling. For example is it 안녕하세요 or 앙녕하세요.) 2.What happened to me now, is that a free resource is now behind paywall. If I would have wrote everything down, I could still learn with it but now I am doomed.

Plus notes make it feel more like work and I try to keep it fun so I stay motivated.
“It’s really early and I’m really hungry” preach 😔
It was like 8am 🤣🤣🤣 I was hangry
If you don't have a book to reference, then I think it makes sense to take notes~
안녕하세요? 저의 알고리즘이 저를 여기로 이끌었네요. 너무 멋져요! 힘내세요!!!!
3:48 “there’s NOT-HING in here” 😂😂😂😂
Okay, but it’s true!!! There’s nothing there!!
Can you make a video about motivation on language learning..😊
start with korean unni class then go up .. frm thr
YES
Okay so, the first time I heard you say you don’t take notes I was like ?!HUH no way😐 But for the past few months it really started to get to me that I wasn’t applying what I learn and instead was taking way more effort and energy.
I do write notes but it’s more like a super condensed version with MAYBE sample sentences that I keep in my digital notebook so if I need to reference it, I don’t need my textbook. With daily journaling, it’s starting to stick in my brain more. Anyways, so excited to watch y’all’s collab videos 🌸🤍🤗
I think the example sentences would be really useful for reference later on!
Ok but this video was just what I needed right now! I just graduated college and I’m ready to take the summer to study up on some Korean for I go back to school in the fall. Girl thank you! You and your friends are out here driving up my motivation! 😆

Glad you like them! ❤️
@@Kumulmeskis It feels a bit strange right? I am lucky that I can think in English but still. 😅
I wanna get into learning Korean this was soo helpful!!! 💖💖
I'm so glad!
Yooooo it took me years to get my note taking strategy down, I wasted so much time rewriting stuff I didn't need to TT I find it so much more helpful just to write summaries or 'cheat sheets' I can refer back to quickly
Lol my cheat sheet is my textbook 😂😂 I wish I found note-taking helpful because full spirals look so pretty haha
That is a much more proper way of taking notes. Summarizing what u learned. Not just copying what was said.
Whispering : I think it's way more better than ttmik
I agree with you, ttmik explanation is like touch and go,and they give very few examples of conjugations
Thanks for your website tho😂
(Btw look at my profile picture, you'll know what it is)
I swear your timing with these videos I've been STRUGGLING lately with my Korean studies and have been wondering what I'm doing wrong? 😭😅 Also I feel attacked with the note taking, but I honestly do agree. I'm going to cut back/stop doing it.
Give it a try and see if it helps! If it doesn't, then maybe notes do help you!
It help me to memorize well too 🌟 but i am still finding more better ways & resource to study
Well honestly, everyone are different right?
I'm falling in love with your room💜😍
I love my room too haha 💜
ive been learning korean for a year and a half at uni, i major in translation and my second lang is korean. and i honestly dont know what to do, i do well in class, but i recently started taking topik 2 classes and everything is so hard, i have to translate the entire sentence of the exercise in order to just understand it. usually u would translate just 2-3 words, but i translte everythings cause i dont understand, and i dont really know how to learn vocabulary, i know a lot of words if i hear them, when im watching a drama i understand like 50% of what they say, and can understand almost everything from context. when it comes to reading and doing exercises im lost, i look at the textbook and i see characterst before seeing the actual words, and it so dissapointing cause ive known how to read korean for like 6 years. i always take notes of grammar, but i never look back on the,, most of them i understand immediately and i recognize grammar i studied in songs and dramas, shows etc. and if i have to write a simple essay, my mind will automatically know how to use x grammar or y grammar and also will remember words i thought i forgot. i used quizlet to memorise vocab but i forgot all of it almost, if i see it in a text, i remember but i cannot just use it when i need to. i dont know what to do and how to study honestly. eng is also not my first lang, and i just know it, i never had to study it like from scratch, one day i realized i know and understand english, but idk what to do and how to study korean. im supposed to be at least intermediate now, but i still think of myself as a begginer in terms of vocab and some grammar. kcneiucnaleifjcnalefjcn im gonna cry idk what to do
I use talk to me in Korean to get the basic understanding and then I’m going to start using howtostudykorean to know more about it
I love your videos they’ve helped me so much and also made learning Korean a lot more fun
I'm so glad!
I miss the instagram community your friends were amazing🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love your videos, you help me a lot with my studying. Thanks

Any thoughts on reviewing grammar?
most of the books i got in korea for studying korean language don't have explanations. It has just a lot of grammar with few sentence samples and everything feel so rushed in the books. All the new informations i cannot absorb and it makes self studying so hard that i feel stuck. I am very unhappy with myself as i can't improve my skills at all lately.
Thank you for these videos.

Hey Natalia, Thanks for your informative videos, I have been enjoying them. As I am studying Korean Language at my Univerisity, I am looking for more materials such as workbooks to practice on. Is it possible to get a copy of the workbook that you've shown at 4:00? It looks interesting and I like how it has no explanation so that I can push myself as I am not a self-study learner.
Yup right now I'm taking the 서울대학교 korean course and I agree, the SNU books are not good for self study
Are you taking classes at the SNU campus?? How do you like it?? I don't know anyone that's gone to their language institute.
@@NataliaGarza Yup I'm in korea right now attending the university. It's all zoom classes because of the rising covid cases but I've got to campus for the exams and stuff
@@NataliaGarza And I do like the class, but it's being in korea and making connections that's been most helpful, not the class itself 😅 I self study a lot outside the class

Do you have any tips in like actually knowing how to speak, because in my Spanish classes I can't reply to anything with out translating the words in my head and translating the english response to spanish and doing that taking like a minute to think of how to respond. Basically is there any tips to just be able to "know" how to interpret right away

I'm from the USA and I only speak English and Korean~
Not about Korean but your hair has been looking so nice lately!!!! I need your secrets lol 😂
Awwww thank you! My hair actually is in serious need of a trim! I got a Korean magic straight treatment in March 2020, but since I never got roots done.... the 6" nearest my scalp are actually curly 😩😩 So my mom has been helping me blow dry my hair straight every time I wash it! hey, can you plz ask your teachers if they can recommend any books in Arabic or Hebrew for beginners? i’m at level ZERO and all i know is some letters.
i can study Korean in English but i prefer to study it in my language (Arabic) or a language that i’m fluent in (Hebrew) rather than to study a foreign language in another foreign language.
thanks in advance 🙏🏼
omgg never been this early
Not taking notes is a bad advice (for some people). If you write things down you will more likely not forget them so easily (like how word are spilling. For example is it 안녕하세요 or 앙녕하세요.)
2.What happened to me now, is that a free resource is now behind paywall. If I would have wrote everything down, I could still learn with it but now I am doomed.
Have you done a self study video? If not can we get one please?
Mmmmm I release a video about tips for self-studying with the Ewha books if that's what you mean?? Is Korean grammar just the speech in Korean?- I’m confused?
It's actually the grammar rules
Just like how English has grammar rules and structure, Korean has its own grammar rules and structure.
