You always give such good advice~ I've been studying Korean for 1 year (my study is on a hiatus bc of uni u no) and I struggle getting past the upper beginner stage :( do you have any specific advice for this ?
Hmmm My advice to you would be to just continue learning vocabulary and grammar structures. Personally I could feel the jump once I learned... maybe.... 80 intermediate level grammar structures? I'm sharing the number with you because I want you to have a point of reference, but the reason I could feel the jump was because I was able to better express myself and understand others. Continuing to grow your vocabulary is also vital. At the time, I was studying about 100 words a week (not because I wanted to, but because I needed to for my classes). Oh! Also! I didn't remember all those words haha I would say I only truly learned about 500-700 of the words that I studied that year. In other words, I would say you just need to keep going! Continue to learn new words and grammar patterns, and eventually you'll realize you've hit an intermediate level. That's what happened to me. I felt like my Korean had plateaued for about a year until one day I realized I was intermediate lol (The year that I felt I was stuck was the year I was in Korea learning all those grammar structures and vocabulary words.)

I dont know about tip #4 😂 all day I watch kdrama and listen to kpop like BTS and BLACKPINK and other kpop bands. That is how I kinda understand. When I watch kdrama I have caption on, and I have those habit that every time I listen to what they say and pause the video and repeat what they said and read the captions to understand what they said 😂 same thing for kpop i start singing korean and learn the whole lyrics in korean and English 🤣🤣 i love your video. So helpful!!❤
ahhhh~ that's a technique called sentence mining! haha if you do that, it's more like studying~ I'm specifically referring to the people that think they can just watch the drama and become fluent~ While I'm sure even that would work if someone were to do it for years, I'm just trying to emphasize that it's not the most efficient way to study~
I disagree with you with dramas for listening (and learning). I just started to study korean and it’s the third language that I’m learning. Although you can’t use ONLY dramas as a study tool, that’s how I learned English in the first place - just by watching Harry Potter endlessly when I was 12 and being curious with the dictionary (no internet at the time). So I’m doing the same with Korean, I picked up a drama as a study object and I’ll watch it all repeatedly again and again so I’ll complement my study. I do agree, though, that if you only watch, and don’t analyze and pause and go back a few seconds, it is useless lol. But if you watch the scene, go back, repeat the lines out loud, it’s actually really helpful.
my dream is have a korean friends because i'm start learn korean and i need to speak with people for learn it moreeee so please if someone want to be my friend i'm here .

Me and my younger sister both challenged ourselves to learn a new language so she decided to learn Russian and I decided to learn either learn Spanish or korean. I'm probably gonna learn Spanish first because it's way easier to learn and it's kinda similar to French(I live in Canada so I've been learning French since I was 9) so I'm probably gonna learn Spanish and then move on to Korean because it's a lot more complicated.
I think that in the long run, kdramas actually do help!! I wouldn’t tell someone to study only from that tho lol but for me maybe 60% of the vocab I know is the things I picked up from kdramas! Don’t expect to learn the whole language that way but it’s a good thing to do if you are feeling unmotivated to listen to lessons and study grammar it always helps me get motivated again
I totally agree! I've recently started learning Korean in a more serious way, but I've been watching k-dramas for like 8 years, and I knew soo many words of the beginner level that it made it easier to move forward with the grammar, bc I didn't have to memorize everything from zero, if that makes sense.
Rosario DiBello yeah I get you! I’m the same way I had watched kdramas for a few years before I started learning seriously so it made starting out so much easier
LOL I'm not try to attack you~! I just wanted people to understand what I am taking about~ haha If you speak basic Korean already, definitely learn words about cooking because it's your hobby~!!! Haha I'm glad you found my video helpful~😍
Natalia Garza Thank you! 🥰 I can speak basic, and read Hangul. I learned mostly from kpop songs and dramas, or fan chats. Until now I didn't started adding structure to the learning process. 🥰💜
Listening in the beginning just helps you to get to used to the language. I mean, it's not that beneficial, but i think it's also important if you like tired to learn grammar or new words or smth. So, don't underestimate listening in the beginning😂 Actually your video helped me so much, thanks!! Hope you're okay! ❤️

I 👏 BECAME 👏 ADDICTED 👏 TO 👏 K-DRAMAS 👏 AND 👏 I 👏 NEED 👏 HELP My korean journey : (that just started) So I was like I'm bored in quarantine and there's nothing to do soo I was like lemme learn a new language and suprise the people at school...... Then I was like which language..... Then it hit me how about Korean...... (Cuz I'm already a kpop fan buttttt thats not my only reason for learning Korean so don't come me) I did some research like how to start Learning Korean and EVERY SINGLE website said to learn the Hangul I tried but I was like nahhh imma learn it the way NAMJOON learnt English soo I started watching k-dramas and got addicted.......then was like ok time to get serious......so I started learning Korean in February and till now I only know K-drama plots....and k-pop songs.....and the numbers and a little bit of the Hangul so I was like alright now enough is enough and it's time to actually get serious...go I started with the Hangul (not my first time cuz I tried to learn it in the beginning) and I actually learnt it pretty easily now.....so my next goal is finally starting grammar....and practice reading......wish me luck 😉
한글 is definitely the best start :) ive only been studying it for just iver a month but at first i just started without really knowing what to do and hsd a bunch of apps, it was overwhelming because i was trying to memorise the words that were just appearing on my screen in letters i didnt know at all 😭😭 but then a week or two ago, i learnt 한글 and now i can read and write a little bit (like short sentences) because i learnt it :)
Watching kdramas and listening to k-pop does help with pronunciation for me at least but yes I can say that it isn’t the best for listening. I recommend listening to the Korean news or podcasts of natural conversations just so that you can understand the way Koreans pronounce certain words so that it makes you speak more naturally. This is just a tip sorry if it makes no sense.
I started learning Korean last summer, and I honestly did NOT review at all. I would just fly through lessons and call it a day. I ended up forgetting everything I learned. I was pretty inconsistent throughout that time too because of school, but recently I started to learn it again. This time I'm starting with 한글, and making sure that I review everything. I hope it works out, but your videos make me very motivated! Thank you! If anyone wants to be internet study buddies, please lmk too😭🙏🏻💞
I am here to learn Korean because I just recently discovered how much I really enjoy Kdramas because of how soothing the Korean language sounds to my ears! So my love for Kdramas and the Korean language turned into curiosity about Kpop and I only just discovered Exo and BTS in January of this year....( I am late to everything, story of my life!) Glad I finally discovered Kpop; just sad that I am joining the Exo-L and ARMY fandom so late in the game! But I look forward to catching up and learning a new language and culture along the way!
I want to learn Korean as my 3rd language but I am struggling to learn by myself. I learned my first language, Spanish, because my parents were Mexicans and didn't understand English. I learned how to read and write in Spanish by myself to understand more things, which I'm not very good at. I learned English at school because it was important, it was a bit hard because most people at school knew Spanish so talking in English was rare. I learned a bit more because I practiced with teachers and non-Spanish speakers.so, learning Korean might be hard because I won't have someone that knows Korean to talk to me and I don't want to talk through online because I'm a very shy person. I am excited to try and learn. Wish me luck !!!
Yeaaaaa watching shows is a lazy learning situation. they can be helpful though but you need to be actively learning not just, ya know, watching t with subtitles or listening. Like music for example, pick a song that has good grammar and not to much distortion (slower sad story based songs are good for this), find the lyrics and translate them, to understand the vocabulary and grammar. then sing along with the song making sure you remember and understand what's being said. In saying that, I haven't tried this method for Korean, only Chinese.

I have an American accent when I speak Korean, but I am Korean-American. So sometimes people have difficulty understanding me when I speak, but they pretty much figure out from the context. It’s also interesting because I kinda speak naturally, but if I’m trying to write something, I actually have to think about how things are written.
It's funny that I'm watching this video because I'm trying to improve my English, not because I'm trying to learn Korean. Don't get me wrong I also want to learn Korean, but first I need English. ✌️😂
I started learning Korean like 3 months ago cuz I was bored in quarantine and I spent the most time on learning hangul and batchim....I really wanted to get it done with cuz I know I NEED to know it becauseee you just can't write or read or do anything if you don't know it. It was a struggle but now that I did it it's going much faster for real
I learned 한글 10 years ago when i was still in highschool and I honestly find it so much easier to read than romanization, especially when it comes to songs lyrics 🙈😅
LOVE THIS VIDEO😤💜💜 started learning korean just to know what bts saying on vlive without engsub😢 and i want study in south korea so why not :3 tysm for this awesome video!!
Watching current era Kdramas (for fun) has helped me get some basic words down and there are quite a few now where I don’t “translate them in my head” and I realized I had looked away from the screen one day and I understood a sentence. Granted, it was a short one, but still. Accomplishment. 😂 Active listening isn’t purely for fun, but watching a scene with/without the subtitles and studying that way can be fun or at least a nice change from your regular studies (cause I’m bored easily) haha Kpop is harder cause they don’t pronounce words like you would irl (like any singers), but even though I wouldn’t call it STUDYING, it’s nice to be able to pick up words that you couldn’t before 😅
lmao, when you said "transcripts are key" I thought you said "transcripts aquí" and I was like ? transcripts here ? what ? and then I listened properly 😂
I wish I could watch k drama with double sub titles, English on the top and Korean on the bottom because that could help learn a bit more while watching them
i’m really glad i never wanted to use the romanization when i started learning, the first thing i learned was hangul and i used hangul to figure out how to pronounce the romanized words haha
Thank you for your advices. You always make me to do my best in my learning process ! As for the review : could me make a video or explain me in a comment how do you do it ? It is actually my weakest point and I know it...
I will definitely make a video for you! I can't promise when it will come out, because finals are coming up and I need to reflect on how I review. When I think about how I review, my mind draws a blank 😅 BUT it will come out!
I JUST STARTED HANGUL TODAY... PLEASE INSPIRE ME SO I CAN CONTINUE MY JOURNEY WITH A WARM SUPPORT... NOW I KNOW THESE HANGULS: ㅏ ㅓ ㅗ ㅜ ㅑ ㅕ ㅛ ㅠ ㅡ ㅣ ㄱ ㄴ ㅁ ㅇ ㅂ
watching kdrama and listening to kpop is good once you already know hangul and are familiar with some words! you can see how they use certain words and grammars during conversation, or give you an idea on how to start a convo but relying on that alone isn't really gonna take you anywhere lol
Here is a really good tip for listening. It takes long and to be honest it’s a bit of a hassle. If you have Netflix, the subtitles are always English and they usually have Korean too. Variety shows especially because language is slightly less formal than on a drama. So listen to a section say of 5-10 while reading English, make sure you fully understand the entire context of that situation. Then switch to Korean subtitles, watch the words and then listen how the words blend together, listen what gets emphasized and what almost is said so softly or blended (if that makes sense) that you don’t really focus on saying it as loud as the first part of the word. And thennn try without subtitles and see how you progress. It takes long, but I promise you it will make you more aware of how you listen and what you focus on
Very good explanations and makes good sense. A bit discouraging, though, as I only want to understand Korean so I can watch K dramas. So many fabulous K dramas... Thanks, Natalia! Great video!

If you need something that also includes listening, which I highly recommend since you are a beginner, I would check out the channel "Mini Teaches Korean" and "Korean 언니!" I also recommend TTMIK if you don't currently use their RUclips channel to study Korean.
Ayee ich bin auch deutschh
Sometimes when I speak English I have like random accents lol 😂 (My main language is English)
Ikrrrr
the beginning was so fast i was like 👁👄👁
I dont know about tip #4 😂 all day I watch kdrama and listen to kpop like BTS and BLACKPINK and other kpop bands.
*Natalia*: tip number 4 is-
*Ad* The London mint office
lol idk why I wasn't learning Korean a year ago
LOLOLOLOL That ad tho 😂😂
my dream is have a korean friends because i'm start learn korean and i need to speak with people for learn it moreeee so please if someone want to be my friend i'm here .
I found your video 2 weeks after I started my own journey to learn Korean. You are super funny and had me lol watching your videos. Please keep posting tips please.
Yes, ma'am~! Welcome to the family too~! ☺️
Would love to see a video on how you review as usually I feel like I just skim over everything and I'm not actually reviewing properly 😂 also I love your Totoro hoodie! 😍
Hmmmm interesting ~ Haha you’re not the first person to make this request today so it looks like I’ll have to add that video to my To-Do list~!
Awww thanks~ I bought it on my first trip to 명동~! 🥰
I have trouble with the 3rd tip. Whenever I try to write sentences on my own, I have no way of checking to see if it's correct. Any ideas?
You can try the hinative app
i have the same problem, but I'm trying to writing and then I see the right answer. usually I do a lot of mistakes, but I think is better know your mistakes than write everything right and don't know what u did wrong
I really wish I could have someone to practice Korean
Same here
There is an app called HelloTalk and you can talk with native speakers they can help you with their native language and you can help them with your native language

Love your posters! 😭😭💜
I’m the same way I had watched kdramas for a few years before I started learning seriously so it made starting out so much easier
so true....I've been watching Korean dramas for 5 yrs and I only know a handful of words...still a motivation to learn, just the basics...
My hobby is cooking and I do it everyday. I feel so attacked right now! 😂
Thank you for these very helpful tips. 💜
My given name is Linda I feel attacked.
😬😬😬😬😬
this woman is amazing. im in awe
Listening in the beginning just helps you to get to used to the language. I mean, it's not that beneficial, but i think it's also important if you like tired to learn grammar or new words or smth. So, don't underestimate listening in the beginning😂
Actually your video helped me so much, thanks!! Hope you're okay! ❤️
Hi Natalia씨~ I just became a new subscriber today and I've seen several of your wonderful, funny, and ecstatic videos ( your video on the 6 things you wish you knew before learning Korean was my favorite! ) My dad and I found ourselves LITTERALLY laughing out loud to several of your videos, and my dad never laughsㅋㅋㅋ Your videos are so well made, so cleverly deliviered that you have captured our hearts! My family and I have just recently started the Korean fluency journey ourselves, and love to know we are not alone on the Korean sea. Thanks for all your wonderful advice~ I've also created a RUclips channel to vlog our Korean study adventures at home and it has been doozy. If you are the least bit interested in seeing our family adventure please get back to me~ Again thank for creating such intriguing content!
Dear BTS, IM DOING THIS FOR YOU BECAUSE I LOVE YOU❤️
I 👏 BECAME 👏 ADDICTED 👏 TO 👏 K-DRAMAS 👏 AND 👏 I 👏 NEED 👏 HELP
My korean journey : (that just started)
So I was like I'm bored in quarantine and there's nothing to do soo I was like lemme learn a new language and suprise the people at school...... Then I was like which language..... Then it hit me how about Korean...... (Cuz I'm already a kpop fan buttttt thats not my only reason for learning Korean so don't come me)
I did some research like how to start Learning Korean and EVERY SINGLE website said to learn the Hangul I tried but I was like nahhh imma learn it the way NAMJOON learnt English soo I started watching k-dramas and got addicted.......then was like ok time to get serious......so I started learning Korean in February and till now I only know K-drama plots....and k-pop songs.....and the numbers and a little bit of the Hangul so I was like alright now enough is enough and it's time to actually get serious...go I started with the Hangul (not my first time cuz I tried to learn it in the beginning) and I actually learnt it pretty easily now.....so my next goal is finally starting grammar....and practice reading......wish me luck 😉
Boki's Cheesestick You also have to learn Batchim, it is the basic pronunciation for 한글 and it is needed to pronounce words correctly.
Thank you for your tips now I realise why I'm not improving my korean.Thank you very much please keep doing this kind of videos...
감사합니다~
I started learning Korean last summer, and I honestly did NOT review at all. I would just fly through lessons and call it a day. I ended up forgetting everything I learned. I was pretty inconsistent throughout that time too because of school, but recently I started to learn it again. This time I'm starting with 한글, and making sure that I review everything. I hope it works out, but your videos make me very motivated! Thank you! If anyone wants to be internet study buddies, please lmk too😭🙏🏻💞
That is true. Learning to read Hangeul helps a lot. So I am also starting a lesson for beginners on my channel.
you look reaally good with bangs
I am here to learn Korean because I just recently discovered how much I really enjoy Kdramas because of how soothing the Korean language sounds to my ears! So my love for Kdramas and the Korean language turned into curiosity about Kpop and I only just discovered Exo and BTS in January of this year....( I am late to everything, story of my life!) Glad I finally discovered Kpop; just sad that I am joining the Exo-L and ARMY fandom so late in the game! But I look forward to catching up and learning a new language and culture along the way!
she really said TRUST THE PROCESS
I just have to say, your sweatshirt is everything.
I am learning Korean for bts!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 I am going to meet them one day!💜💜
I had to go 10 seconds back a million times cause I kept looking at the bts posters 😂😂
My listening is what caused me to fail my JLPT, so yep tip 4 is vital as not everyone is going to speak slowly! Great advice
Oh nooo~ Hopefully you'll do better the next time you take it!
@@NataliaGarza Haven't studied since 2003 so I've forgotten practically everything! Going to give Korean a try and also try to get back into Japanese again. Thanks for replying!
My classmate: I can't learn 한글 it's so hard, I've been trying for two months
Me: It took me 10mins to learn 한글 wow
Classmate: ...I hate you
I'm helping her now ^^
dang, i actually wish i had friends to help me like this. i’ve wanted to learn it for the longest time but no one speaks Korean at least no one that i know
Batchim is a pain tho 😫
Did anyone notice BANGTANSONYEONDAN oppa’s posters?
SHE HAS BTS POSTER AT THE BACK
NOW I KNOW WHY SHE WANT TO LEARN KOREAN!!!!!!!!!
Gwenchana gwenchana this only a word that i learned from k drama
Only bts can motivate me to learn another language ngl and here I am :)
Hangul: done
Writing: done
and you know whats next reading while also figguring out what it means
How cute are you!😂😊 Thank you for the tips
Me: **learning korean for a year**
My 🧠: **let's watch this**
I definitely find it easier to read than to actually write in Korean. I’ve been trying to study for four hours a day. 📚
love ur bubble personality 😘😘💜 anyay wish me luck..just started learning koreans..like..really really..from zero. Thx for the advice..okay..hangul..it is
I have an American accent when I speak Korean, but I am Korean-American.
Yay another video~
You know it~ 😘
I started learning Korean like 3 months ago cuz I was bored in quarantine and I spent the most time on learning hangul and batchim....I really wanted to get it done with cuz I know I NEED to know it becauseee you just can't write or read or do anything if you don't know it. It was a struggle but now that I did it it's going much faster for real
칭찬합니다.
Actually because of quarantine, I have decided to make some videos. LOL ^ ^
우리 다같이 화이팅합시다!
I learned 한글 10 years ago when i was still in highschool and I honestly find it so much easier to read than romanization, especially when it comes to songs lyrics 🙈😅
LOVE THIS VIDEO😤💜💜
started learning korean just to know what bts saying on vlive without engsub😢 and i want study in south korea so why not :3 tysm for this awesome video!!
Kpop did really help me with pronunciation because i sing them everyday :)
Ohhh i really want to understand korean because of kdramas and kpop i hope i could learn korean easily soon!!!!😢😢😅😅
Watching current era Kdramas (for fun) has helped me get some basic words down and there are quite a few now where I don’t “translate them in my head” and I realized I had looked away from the screen one day and I understood a sentence. Granted, it was a short one, but still. Accomplishment. 😂
Active listening isn’t purely for fun, but watching a scene with/without the subtitles and studying that way can be fun or at least a nice change from your regular studies (cause I’m bored easily) haha
Kpop is harder cause they don’t pronounce words like you would irl (like any singers), but even though I wouldn’t call it STUDYING, it’s nice to be able to pick up words that you couldn’t before 😅
lmao, when you said "transcripts are key" I thought you said "transcripts aquí" and I was like ? transcripts here ? what ? and then I listened properly 😂
고마워, 언니.
I really like this video because most of it is great advice for language learning in general.
Glad to hear that!
@@NataliaGarza thank you ! :)
Those tips are really necessary!! I loved the video. Thanks for share this 💜💜💜😁
I’m glad you find them helpful~!! 🥰
Just wanna compliment cuz u deserve it
Beautiful tips from a beautiful person ☺️🥺❤️💜 giiiirrrrllll u gorgeous
I just started learning today☺️
THANK THE GODS YOUR HERE. THINGS ARE SOOO MOCHI EASIER
mochi haha
I JUST STARTED HANGUL TODAY...
PLEASE INSPIRE ME SO I CAN CONTINUE MY JOURNEY WITH A WARM SUPPORT... NOW I KNOW THESE HANGULS:
ㅏ ㅓ ㅗ ㅜ ㅑ ㅕ ㅛ ㅠ ㅡ ㅣ ㄱ ㄴ ㅁ ㅇ ㅂ
That’s my current learning level too. We can do this!!
watching kdrama and listening to kpop is good once you already know hangul and are familiar with some words! you can see how they use certain words and grammars during conversation, or give you an idea on how to start a convo but relying on that alone isn't really gonna take you anywhere lol
It takes long, but I promise you it will make you more aware of how you listen and what you focus on
romanization confuses me honestly , its much easier looking at HAngul , Im not a native english speaker
I can see BTS pic in the background the reason for me to learn korean and to come korea I hope I can do it well
ok but that intro got me all over the place
Very good explanations and makes good sense. A bit discouraging, though, as I only want to understand Korean so I can watch K dramas. So many fabulous K dramas... Thanks, Natalia! Great video!
