  • This is an excellent rendering of Raga Malkaush (Alap) by Pt. Brij Bhushan Kabra, the pioneer of guitar in Hindustani classical music. The duration of rendition is more than half an hour. His knowledge about the raga, playing techniques and ability to unfold the character of the raga through detail Alap of Dhrupad tradition are really adorable. This was a live concert video recording under rare recording series(1960--1990) from a private collection.
My Guruji, Pt. Brij Bhushan Kabraji successfully initiated the use of the Guitar in Hindustani music in 1960's. At that time there was no precedence of concert level presentation of Hindustani instrumental music on this instrument. When my Guruji brought this instrument to his Guru Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Sahib, within no time Ustadji realized the nature & character of the instrument, the suitable playing techniques for presenting the nuances of raga music and advised Pt. Kabra to play with minimum number of strike on the strings resulting in the creation of excellent 'Meend' in all the three octaves which is considered as one of the specialty of the slide guitar. Ustadji also believed that no other instrument of Hindustani music is capable to create long range 'Meend' with a single strike from one octave to other except the Guitar.
My Guruji followed this important teaching of his Guru throughout his life and still propagating the same among his students. In the period of 1960s' to 1980s', just when we're entering to the digital age and the classical artists strictly maintained the purity of raga in their presentation and people also have less attraction towards 'fusion music', my Guruji was especially invited to concerts where musicians and the audience love to listen "Alap' on his guitar for hours and his first album was in only "Alap' in raga Puria. Some artists and music lovers whom I met in Kolkata confirmed this fact and they still remember the beauty of his presentation, playing style of Meend and application of 'Kan- swar' or ease of rhythm in Alap & Jod.
Under the banner of rare recording series(1960--1990), I have uploaded some rare pieces of original tracks(only 'Alap') of raga Darbari, Bageshwari, Alahiya Bilawal,Lalit, Jhinjhoti etc. which are treasures of Hindustani music. Lastly, I like to present a quote from "Guitar Magazine"(USA):"..........................this is the first album to be readily available in the west. All listeners should be astounded by his technical brilliance and seemingly impossible control and speed as a slide guitarist. But please listen also to the great emotional depth and expressiveness of his playing...................".

The March 1989 issue of Guitar Player's cover story was "Unknown Greats!", and the editors of the magazine picked Brij Bhushan Kabra as one of the greatest unknown players.

Kabra is the wizard of guitar recital, he made a history of the recital of guitar but he was not acclaimed with the Padmasri or Padma bhushan or Padmabibhushan award.... Why!!! Where today Mr. BISWA MAHAN BHATT was awarded with the Padma. Bhushan Award!!! I was baffled with this type of....... What I have to tell..... Very inhuman decision, I decided it to be...... Tunes are touching to heart! As Anup Dey in his Comments mentioned this Raga Tansen presented in Akbar Darbar's Court! Then it was known as Mollo Kaushik and now it is called Malkauns the night Raga! Mind blowing Alaaps!
As such whenever I listen Chandranadan; created by the Great Ustad Ali Akabar
Khan; the CD in my stock; there after immediately I listen Brijbhushan Kabraji's
Chandranadan!! It is so much effective and still develops mood to listen !
    Atleast two to three times!
    Thanks for such uploading!!

    Memoirs
    --------------
The distinguished forgotten artist , Brijbhushan Kabraa ji
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The progressive child Brij bhushan Kabra was born in 1937. He saw in 1956 the lap slide guitar , in Kolkata. Brijbhushan modified it to use this Western instrument in classical music . Initially he learnt classical at his own , played the instrument . Later on became disciple of ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
In 1967 when Brijbhushan kabara ji was on top , he discovered two unknown young artists shivkumar Sharma and hariprasad chaurasiya. , No one knew shiv and hariprasad then . Brijbhushan kabara ji brought them to the fore , The music director of "call of the valley "was none other than shri Kabraji.
He was Brijbhushan only , who introduced these two new artists .
But unfortunately shiv and hari abandoned shri kabara.
Kabra was suffering with Rheumatoid arthritis for eight years , shiv hari never went to see him . Even tried to remove his name from" call of the valley ." Even in interviews , these two used to take the whole credit of the vally project . They never mentioned kabra's name
Pandit vishwmohan Bhatt ji , made Mohan Veena on basis of kabra ji 's guitar but unfortunately he also took credit for himself and didn't even realise to put forth the name of Mr Brijbhushan kabra.
Sad to note, this is the field of pious art, where true artists are this way exploited .

I am overjoyed to find an older brother in this style of guitar. Until now I was the only one I could find. Now I can explore guitar raga as opposed to only sitar raga. Gracias. I use a Pythagorean 5 string 3 octave drone with a fifth tuning in C256 to achieve unprecedented overoctave persistence into the ultrasonic perceivable only by the bones. C256 is the resonance of bone. I fuse classical raga, psychedelic blues and Hula into what I have named Chaos Slack. Your notes confirm that I am independently also on the right track as opined by the guru of Kabra in the 60s. It appears that he is using the standard A440 pitch. This is quite disappointing for me, as I would have thought the classic Hindustani pitch would be cosmic, A432 and not, sadly and tragically commercial.

    • @thomasbrown3325
      @thomasbrown3325 Год назад

Indian classical musicians choose the root by convenience, usually to fit the singer's voice or the main instrumental soloist's preferred tuning. The specific pitch for the root is unimportant.
