  • This video is an excerpt of ceremonial function of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 2005.
My Guruji , Pt. Brij Bhushan Kabra played this master piece after receiving the SNA award.
Raga- Manj Khamaj (Alap, Vilamvit Gat & Drut Gat).
    Accompanying Artist: Ustad akram Khan(Tabla)
    &
    Debashish Bhattacharya(Guitar)
    About The Artist:
The first Indian artist to use a steel guitar within classical Indian music was Pt.Brij Bhushan Kabra. He modified an archtop guitar, raising the guitar nut, and including "sympathetic" strings, drone strings which are tuned to the raga being performed. Pt. Kabra became the first Indian musician to play raga on the guitar, performed publicly, and recorded the successful album Call of the Valley (1967) with santoor player Pt. Shivkumar Sharma and flute player Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia in 1960. The guitar was seldom used in Indian classical music and his guitar playing gained popularity in the 1970s hippie culture. Kabra recorded solo albums and concentrated on teaching since the 1990s, but continued to perform. He was awarded the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 1983--84, was made a fellow of the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi for 1995--96, and received the national Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2005.Pt. Debashish Bhattacharya, chief disciple of Pt. Kabra is also considered as one of the best guitarist in the world. His other disciples namely Shri Debasis Chakroborty(Guitarist) and Prof. Lovely Sharma(Sitarist) are performing all over the world at present.

I'm very fond of late Brij Bhushan Kabra ji. But this sounds definitely like Raag Hemant, but from the drut tintal it's Manj Khamaj.

Where can I get the kind of guitar bar that Kabra ji uses? Because the short round one slips from hand and the long one is too heavy..

he looks pretty pissed at 39:00 . funny because of how relaxing and beautiful this is. then he starts looking at his watch.. it almost seems like he can't wait for it to end.. weird

Hi Leonardo,we,as the Indian classical artists can improvise for hours and present the beauty of the raga to any extent..it’s not like we have to end our presentation.Looking at the time constraint,we have to adjust our presentation.Hence,Pt.Brij Bhushan ji saw his watch to check the remaining time..it’s not a weird thing..he passed away today..RIP to such a great artist and pride of the nation.🙏💐

A grossly (and unfairly) underrated genius. A visionary artist.

Different parts to the classical piece - the first part was the slow Alaap, the "guy inthe white" (who is guy in pinks student) played the Jod (faster rhythmic part) so you must like that better, but its certainly not the players, of course their is age but the phrasing is amazing from "guy in pink"

The guy in white is brilliant. And the guy in pink is a genius. Brilliance glitters. Always. Genius follows no patterns. Genius is mostly lacklustre. The initiated only have the wherewithal to see through the cover and perceive that genius.

I think Pt. Debasish Bhattacharya did some further enhancements to the guitar to make it sound even more Indian, beyond what Pt. Karbra had already done.
