We were hoping to make the Canton Fair this or next year. This was very insightful, we regularly attended the Spring Fair in the UK for the last 3 years and this year there were not many China factories represented for obvious reason. Going over your adaptions 3 times, this is so important, write it down, send a picture, then a video because we forget what may be obvious to us, means nothing to them. Looking forward to your next video.
Yes I definitely would like to see more footage of you talking to suppliers at the canton fair. So true that our results are dependant on the questions we ask the supplier.
Fantastic content & value as always👍🏻 Love to learn more on the Canton Fair and Product Souring/Development. Looking forward to your next instalment already 😁
It was really nice to watch the video and I got some product ideas too.. Not bags but something for my outdoor departments in near future. I like the way you guide the suppliers through the changes you want and even they are getting idea from you which will benefit them long term. Good video mate
Thank you, I wish your were also in the shoes business.haha.I love how you ask for exclusivity. Drawing or sketch of the change you want to make is also use instead of only words.
Great video Kian. Very useful to see how you communicate with the manufacturer and develop the product in person. I'll remember the Highlander (there can be only one!) warehouse next time I'm home. PS you need to represent an Edinburgh football team on video - none of this FC Barca stuff! :-) Cheers - Darren.
Haha I used to have a few Hibs tops but can't find them anymore, will need to get the latest one and take it out to China with me! Failing that I've got Arsenal shirts too! 👊
@@SourcingWithKian Hey Kian. Do you know if there is any way to find out good suppliers in China that are not listed on Alibaba? I could not register for the online Canton Fair and missed the registration date :/ I can only think of a trading company that can source the product of the quality I'm looking for. I know that higher quality exists for that particular product but could not find it on Alibaba even after getting samples from the "best" suppliers on Alibaba.
@@Gamer2347 Hey Aasim, yeah it's tough in these times by not being able to go to China, but you can use Panjiva.com to get the shipping documents of your competitors to see where their factory is located as well as using Jungle Scout's supplier database tool to find factories of other brands. Hope that helps!
As an Amazon virtual assistant, I really love this. It helped me understand the concept of the Product sourcing development stage. Thanks a lot. I wish you more success and hope to learn from you as well.
Enjoyed that Kian, I'll hopefully be at the next Canton Fair as last year I ended up going to the Delhi Fair & Global Sources Summit and could not fit in the Canton Fair. I look forward to meeting you in person one day!
Inspiring video, makes we want to get to China. Looks like 2023 is the first year in a while that it's a possibility. Really helpful prep for understanding how to navigate the Canton Fair.
Incredibly helpful in prep for the fall, thank you Kian! Can't wait to soak up all of your advice to navigate the digital Canton Fair. Using BSCI and SGS as examples, what other abbreviations should we know in advance to look as experienced as possible when discussing product development with manufacturers?
Hey Julia thanks for your kind words! I actually made a PDF of my top 50 abbreviations which I'm hoping to have on my website available for download shortly, but if like you can send me a msg with your email on facebook (you can find me from the facebook group bit.ly/SourcingWithKianFacebookGroup) and then I can send it to you in advance. Take care
I have literally been waiting for this video! So happy ! Kian do you know if they release the names of suppliers for certain categories. I wanted to order samples ahead of time in order to get as much value as possible.
Thanks Mariam glad you liked the video! They do release the supplier names in the exhibitor guide that you get at the fair so I would hope that they put that online as well, but the website is quite poor and dated so I wouldn't be surprised if it's not there, I will let you know if I find it - virtual canton fair video coming in a few days! 🤓
that was really cool they way you negotiated for exclusivity! can you share what's the maximum exclusivity you can ask without annoying the supplier? In the video you mentioned 3 months and if we don't reorder a certain quantity then they can share the design with others.
Very informative, especially for a somewhat beginner trying to try his hand at private label and sourcing. I particularly tip my hat to the future proofing approach to product adaptions and utilising this as a safety net to keep you ahead of competition; if you can drive customer interest to the improved version 2.0, it isn't such a nuisance if competitors are working for the next 90 days to release their copycat of version 1.0 of your product! Great tactic. Look forward to going through more of your vids.
@@SourcingWithKian Can't wait to watch it! By suddenly being this accessible, Canton Fair Online will probably be extremely popular as a first CF experience! Hence, my question is: how to maximize it?..
Yes exactly it was prepared in advance of the show, always good to have your samples ready for you so you can rectify anything there and then rather than having to go through another round of sample making and sending!
Hi Kian, Thank you for the amazing insight. How do u negotiate for exclusivity? Is there certain criteria you suggest? Like you suggested 3 months exclusivity (only u can purchase?) And how many units are u purchasing for that?
you did great job with this video which showed us real way to develop the product rather than other youtuber's videos which just give us words over words. but I still have a question , do you think that enough to protect your idea or to be the first one selling your developed product on amazon, I mean you don't mention NNN agreement and other stuff. and again its really great video and its exactly what we need .
@@SourcingWithKian Awesome! Another idea: varying product types (i.e. not fabric). Like injection molding (different types of molds, etc.), wood (what's a fumigation certificate), home & kitchen (WTF does LFGB mean, does an LFGB certificate allows you to sell in the US or do you also need FDA certificate?), stainless steel (what are the 3 main types of stainless steel, can you electro-plate it, ...)
@@NicksStuff haha yeah for sure but this would be super in-depth and a very long video, majority of people may get bored and tune out haha, but i'll try to do something like this with live examples at the next Canton Fair, hopefully end of 2021 :)

Hi Kian, I’m loving these videos! How much of a fee do you normally need to pay for licensing rights? Is there a percentage of your profits that they usually take? And what is this usually between? Thanks so much!
Hey Jessica, great question! It varies between each license and the business acquiring the license too and how much leverage you have in the deal. Normally a license will ask for a minimum guarantee which is an upfront payment, this could be something quite small up to 6 figures depending on the size of license you are acquiring and if they are giving you exclusive license rights for your category. On top of the minimum guarantee you have your royalties which will vary depending on if you are selling to retailers in bulk or direct to consumer. There's so many different angles to it because if you have a big social media presence you can leverage post shoutouts for a lower royalty rate etc or if you can align with an influencer who can sell more of the product etc, perhaps I should do an episode on licensing and give some examples haha 🤓
Kian, that sneak peek into product development is eye opening to say the least, you're a legend for putting out this type of content. A question for you if you don't mind... I have about 5-7K USD to start and I'm thinking about Dropshipping as a Minimum Viable Product testing methodology before I invest that 5-7K in stock. But DS is HARD because you cannot differentiate or improve or develope anything and there's a low barrier of entry and a price war, not to mention copy cats and other problems. Aliexpress is basically my only choice and shipping takes ages. Since I have no MOQ, I cannot get a sourcing agent. Do you have any advice for me, brother? What would you do?
