    The "Sandwich" false destination thing is something that Southeastern have done for a long time. They tend to advertise the HS1 trains that go St Pancras-Ashford-Canterbury-Ramsgate as "Ramsgate", and the Dover-routed trains as terminating at "Sandwich". This is because the Canterbury route is the quicker one to Ramsgate, so it's to get people who want Ramsgate onto the quicker service. They do the same with the non-HS1 Charing Cross - Ramsgate services that split and take both routes after Ashford.

      @oliverlovestrains 5 месяцев назад +1

      northern do the same with leeds-york via harrogate, they advertise it as terminating at poppleton, and york-leeds via harrogate is advertised as york-burley park
      they do this because going via garforth and church fenton is faster to get to york

      @@oliverlovestrainsTrue . And somebody doesn't like the fact that some people (me included, at least sometimes) actually want a whistle stop tour of the towns , cities and villages on the way .

      @@JoeTW67 Definitely. Via Garforth / Horsforth / Sandwich / Canterbury West respective makes the most sense in my opinion. (Unless it's Leeds - York non-stop in which case mentioning non-stop is likely to be more relevant that where it's routed via ).

    For six years i lived 10 mins walk from Ebbsfleet station and was spolied with a 22 minute journey into St Pancras.
    But the really impressive run is in the opposite direction from Ebbsfleet to Ashford which is at full speed - 140 mph - with no stops.
    Even if you had a super car, you'd take twice as long - and that's with motorway virtually the whole way too! Used to go from my front door to the Ashford designer outlet, have brekkie or lunch, and be back home in under two hours - with a bit of shopping too!

    My daily commute was from Folkestone to St Pancas so got HS1 daily. It was of course quite expensive but it made a huge difference for us cutting the commute time by 30mins each way. My first time going on HS1 was shortly after it opened and it really was quite exciting. The other thing I should mention is that they run on the Eurostar line and when working normally they are more or less always on time al least when on the HS1 line.

    Welcome to Kent! I use this service often, between St Pancras and Broadstairs via Ashford (or via Herne Bay which is a little cheaper but slower). One of the best sections (as you saw) is the bridge over the river Medway, the trains run parallel with the M2 motorway, the road traffic looks as if it is stationary as the train whizzes past! The other really noteworthy section is between Folkestone and Dover on the slower historic line where the trains run between tunnels with a short section of open air running alongside Samphire Hoe, an outcrop of land built with spoil from the Channel Tunnel. On HS1 these trains run at 140mph, slower than the Eurostar trains and this can create issues as Eurostar does not like the Javelin trains forcing the international train service to slow down. Ideally they should be upgraded to match speeds! These Hitachi trains date back to before the Olympics in 2012 and are rather grubby so the refurbishment is much needed.
    Brighton beach is all shingle, so is Deal beach. Thanet has lovely sandy beaches, Margate, Broadstairs & Ramsgate and some of the secluded coves between. When you pointed out Dover Castle then panned across and saw the ferry, and on your clifftop walk it was just possible to see the outline of the French coast on the horizon. I am not surprised you picked up the French telephone network, you wouldn't be the first person to do so!

  • @driver288
    @driver288 5 месяцев назад +1

    Yes! I thought about doing a combined Paris and London trip using Eurostar to go between them but that was scrapped. But I am going to London and Eastbourne in July! And I’m going to go from the airport to Eastbourne by train 😊

    I've only ridden on a Javelin once, Stratford Int to St Pancras. But I have done St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord on the Eurostar, so I have done all of HS1. Still need to do Ashford Int and Ebbsfleet Int tho, as well as all other stations served by the 395s.

    What a really enjoyable video & Im so glad you liked your walk & Kent. If you ever get the chance to be down that way again, its an interesting journey along from Ashford to Hastings Bexhill & Eastbourne through Rye with some lovely coastal walks in Hastings Country Park, or near Beachy Head. Equally but a lot further afield is the fantasic coastal train journey from Belfast to Whitehead Co. Antrim with an equally amazing coastal walk at the end. Or in the other direction from Belfast to Bangor Co Down by train with wonderful coastal paths out from Bangor.

    Hello again G❤🚂 nice to see you out and about again enjoying yourself on the trains.
    I must say that I really like the class 395 Javelin units, never had the chance to travel on them yet, but will do soon, but until that day, I'll just have to put up with the model I have on my model railway layout at home instead 😂
    On another note, do you think you'll be one of the first to travel on the new HS2 once it's ever built by any chance?
    Makes me wonder when it'll ever be out on service? 🤔😆
    But least I've got the new EMR 810 units in my area to travel on soon hopefully?
    But yet again know doubt yourself and your good mates on RUclips will probably beat me to it as usual lol 😂😂
    Anyway G as I always say, keep up the good work my lovely, lookout for you soon on RUclips as usual.
    All the best from.

    Great video G. Just a pity the weather was not at it's best for you, it is an interesting and historical coast but you need several days to make the most of it. Not railway but video related I love your "Joker" style umbrella (Big Red question mark) It makes me smile. Every time I see it I half expect you to rest your chin on your hands on the handle and say *Riddle me this* 😉🤣🤣 👍.

    Kent is a lovely county to be if I'm honest. Me and my parents went for a holiday to the south of England, having our entry along the magnificent White Cliffs of Dover. A nice place in Kent is the little village of Westwell, about 4 miles from Ashford. There is a very interesting church(St. Mary's) which is depicting all generations of the medieval English Gothic style.

    I haven't been on Eurostar out of St Pancras yet, but I did go to Paris a couple of times and to Amsterdam from Waterloo. It was interesting tiptoeing across Kent on the "legacy" line then coming out of the tunnel with full power and going from 90 mph up to nearly 200! I had been on the TGV a couple of times before, Paris to Geneva and Paris to Marseil. That was in the 80s and was amazing. If you can, go to Paris in 1st Class. Just like being on a plane!

    Small correction. The station for the Olympic Park is Stratford International, not Ebbsfleet. Nice video though.
    There is no British phone signal along parts of those cliffs which is why you got connected to France. Could be expensive if you don't have a European wide tariff.

    When I rode HS1, I went to Canterbury as I'm trying to visit every city in Britain and the weather wasn't great for Dover (it rained). Definitely worth a visit, as it has similar vibes to York and Lincoln with a stunning historic city centre. However, I'd definitely visit Dover next time round, as I didn't expect it to look this good.

      @@GLovesTrains ah that's nice to know; is it the best place to feel like you've gone to France without actually going to France? The coastal views, French bilingual signs and actually being able to see France itself must really drive that home I bet.

    The route you used is great for looking at boats and is much more popular, but personally I love the route to the south, where way you see the SEML running under the cliffs, Samfire Hoe is an amazing place to watch trains as well.

    You really got a text saying welcome to France? without leaving the UK? I've been to St Pancras when I was travelling to London whilst I was staying with family in rutland. Was on East midlands meridian and they have noisy engines, my seat was directly over the engine.

    I was looking for my self at London st pancras International since I'm sometimes there 😄 that beach is nothing compared to Brightons beach, you won't find any sand there 😅
    Update for you though, you might or might not remember back in your blackpool video I said in the comments that I will be going to Blackpool one day, and I did last weekend 😊 and I got myself the vegan fish and chips you got too, still prefer the ones no catch in Brighton but still enjoyed them 😊

    Interesting fact about HS1 from my many occasions of driving it on Train Sim World is that for the High Speeds sections of it, the track and signalling are the same as the ones used in France to make the journey all under the same system and conditions so this technically means that the High Speed parts are actually a French railway as opposed to being British
    Regarding what someone said about Brighton beach and having no sand, I'd recommend a trip to Brighton beach to ride the Volks Electric Railway, it's a unique train line and not long but the other end of the line is next to the where the nudist beach is and while that could be the ultimate place to do the "Knickers on your head" and "Squishy boobies" it's definitely not worth trying it in April lol, Too cold!
