I must confess, watching this is quite shocking, but in a good way. I haven't traveled in these parts of London for years ! They used to be dodgy and dreary. Not now !
So much has changed ! Time to get my freedom pass out and do some exploring !
Haha ye they certainly weren't dodgy!
I love the DLR. I'm 66 and I still want the front seat. 😀😀
Me too!!😂
I’m 14 and I thought I was too old for the front seat
DLR train look great and comfortable thanks for showing us that part of London looks exciting and good to see 👍👍✅✅
it is very interesting seeing someone from outside the South East and London that make a video of their trip and see how they look and feel of stuff
I remember watching a video about the building of the DLR, and it was fascinating. Thanks for taking us along for the ride and giving those of us who probably won't ever get on it a chance to see how it is.
I did ride the DLR always with my mum and my carer on the network
Thanks for sharing your adventures with us x
I love riding on the DLR, my favourite TLF Tube stops are on this line- that being London City Airport and Royal Albert Dock.
First time on the DLR was the middle of winter (frosty and foggy), the view of Canary Wharf at night with the stream venting from the buildings gave the buildings a "Blade Runner" look at night ! Keep up your excellent videos !
I've seen the Cutty Sark once, beautiful ship, the DLR is a lovely quirky route and just realised that I didn't watch this video on the early access lol, Great video G!
Haha don't worry youre allowed a break Cyber 😜😂 thanks!
Frog and I visited it a few years ago. They really enjoyed it.
You can go from Rugeley trent Valley to london Euston then take the tube to bank then DLR over to cutty sark simon put in a video
That was a great video G. I've travelled a lot in the London networks but only once on the DLR. I remember it being built and opened. It's nice to see where all that Brinks Mat gold went.
Good to see you down south.
If you go to Greenwich again, I recommend the foot tunnel under the river back over to the Isle of Dogs where you can link back in with the DLR.
I am a Londoner by birth, just escaped to the coast 25 years ago. I watched the DLR (dinky little railway) being built into Stratford on my commute to school, now it has morphed into a busy little system that could grace many an entire city and not just a district of one. Yes, demand has meant the trains are longer and some stations (but not easy when underground) had had their platforms extended. I last visited Greenwich when I was a Gamesmaker for London 2012, did you get to see the meridian line? I last used the system in March, Stratford International to City Airport (easy to spot the airport runway on the Eastenders credits on BBC), very handy indeed. The cable car is great fun unless it's a windy day! There is talk of naming the lines to make wayfinding easier, would be a good idea. Also new trains coming soon, with airconditioning too! Enjoy!
Air con brilliant! Thanks a lot 😀
Love Greenwich park and the view across to Canary wharf and love the whole Canary wharf area..feels like a modern well planned area with the DLR futuristically winding through it
A few years ago we took the DLR from Lewisham to Canary Wharf, stopping at Greenwich Park and Cutty Sark to visit them. A beautiful ride and I managed to get up front. Great video, thank you for the memory it brings back! Too bad you couldn't make a visit at Greenwich. When you've got more time, I can recommend it.
Thanks a lot!
Just binged your videos, loved every second! This video is brilliant! I remember riding on the DLR just for the fun of it, stayed at Walthamstow for a while and went down to the quays for some sights, the different lines give absolutely wonderful views out to the thames and canary wharf!
Sweet! Thanks a lot 👍
I've done all of the DLR, although not seen all the units. I also haven't seen the Cutty Sark, so will need to go visit it someday.
I found that the Beckton branch is pretty empty, so that's where you can more easily get the front seat.
Just a very BIG THANK YOU for everything you do with your vlogs, I know it takes a lot to do these things and your vlogs are the very best!!Hope you continue from strength to strength love to all your family and YOU G you ROCK!!xxxx
THANK YOU TOO!
Glad I’m not the only one to have to walk up and down the stairs twice at Heron Quays!
Haha glad to hear it!
at DLR stations, the validators are always at the entrance. the only exceptions are bank, stratford, west ham (and i think canning town) where there are barriers because they also have other lines
Great vlog G. I rode the DLR for the first time last summer. I didn’t quite bag the front seat but I did get to drive the train in reverse.
At least that's something! 😀
The first driverless train i ever was on was the Skytrain in Vancouver BC Canada. It was in the early 1990'ws and the map of the line was a straight line. There are a few more curves and other lines now.
Ooo sounds great!
The DLR wobbles like a ghost train. It does take you through some really good architecture
I can see Blackpool Tower on the video!!!! Lots of them as well!
We were at Heron Quays and Canary Warf for the London marathon a couple of weeks ago, first time using the DLR ! It’s a bit like a cross between a train and a tram. Some good views along the line as well. 👌🏻 love your channel!
Ye nice to see the views! Thanks 😀
Really quite like the DLR. Quieter (both in noise and amount of people) than the tube and it is mostly overground.
Absolutely brilliant video G! The DLR is one the best ways to get around the future is looking good for it with the new trains coming in this year and they will be a fixed formation of 5 coaches but longer is well and future plans to extend the DLR to Thamesmead and maybe even further but absolutely love Greenwich Park and if you continued a little further you would have gone into Blackheath Village but hopefully we get to see you down here more often as there is a lot to explore in SE London and Kent but again great video 😀👍🏻
Ye so much I need to do down there! Thanks Jack 😀
Good God was that Bow creek ,didn't look like that last time I was down there. Glad you got to the front in the end G .Great vid .
Haha cheers!
Glad to see you enjoyed the DLR.
It's ironic to think it was a railway built on the cheap. And it's a good example of why a railway should never be built on the cheap, as they had to quickly swap out the signalling system, because it wasn't up to the job. And they had to extend the platforms, as they totally underestimated the demand the DLR would induce, and they didn't put in passive provision for Cutty Sark and it's twin station on the Northern side of the Thames to be extended.
I think the most sub-optimal thing about the DLR, is they put in really sharp turns in the section on the Isle of Dogs. Essentially they built a bunch of tower blocks first, without reserving the route through the Isle of Dogs, and then designed a track that was more like a roller-coaster route than a railway. So the DLR actually uses non-standard wheels, so that it can make sharp turns, and the trains run much more slowly in that section. Outside of the Isle of Dogs, where the lines are either recycled railway lines, or new sections built after passenger usage on the DLR shot up, the track is a lot straighter and the DLR vehicles move at a much more logical speed.
Our current government is currently obsessed with "driverless trains", as they want to get rid of railway workers who are union members, but the DLR vehicles actually all have drivers on them anyway. The drivers on the DLR are called "Train Captains" and are normally hanging around the doors, where they open up a panel that lets them open and close the train doors. But if anything goes wrong, they go to that front seat you were in, with the big slope-thing you leaned on, and unlock a panel on it and reveal lots of cool looking controls that let them drive the DLR vehicle manually. So sitting at the front of a DLR train and pretending to be the driver is cool, but sitting behind someone actually driving a DLR train is more cool.
I do like riding on the DLR and have been on it so many times. My favourite thing about the DLR is that you can sit in front of the window but not where you got the driver on controller sits in case of emergency. And I have been to Canary Wharf, Custom House, Beckton, Lewisham, Cutty Sark and Canning Town.
Another fantastic Vlog, railway station always held a fascination for me, the high vaulted roofs, the ticket offices of old with their roaring fires, thinking of the lives of all who have come through its doors and the stories they could tell, my love for trains started with a weekend trip on the Settle Carlisle line. We also did on that weekend Beamish Open Air museum and polished off quite a few JD and cokes each night in the hotel. Keep up the excellent work, you're doing us proud xxxx
Brilliant ! 👍
So now I know, I'm not the only one who likes to grab the front seat so I can pretend I'm driving 🤣
Its got to be done 😂
The best place to ensure getting a front seat is by traveling from one of the quieter starting points. Either Tower Gateway or Beckton are probably your best bet.
brilliant i like Canary Warf its a lovely area which ive visited a few times & i visited Catty Sark a few years ago & i def need to visit Greenwich at some point & i did Stratford last week to do transport stuff & look around the shops in the Westfield & i visited Canning town back in January & i used royal Victoria a few times after riding the Cable car from North Greenwich talking of which i def recommend the cable car you get awesome views from riding it & ive ridden it a few times & i like the DLR which ive used quite a few times & im looking forward to the new trains that are due awesome vlog as always
Hi G, really glad you enjoyed your trip on the DLR and well done for getting the front seat! I live here and haven't managed it very often! Great video as always! Me and my son are great fans of your channel.
Haha you gotta get in there with the front seat! Thanks a lot 😀
Greenwich or now maritime Greenwich is beautiful spot. I spent mamy a Saturday afternoon with my parents on the top of that hill. And skateboard or roll down it. In my day as a kid it was all disused docklands that you could see on the isle of dogs. Now it sconcrete and glass. I had the pleasure of working in canary wharf twice. Once in the early days before bank station had the connection, and once with the jubilee line extension. Looks like you enjoyed my old stomping ground.
!!! Good video, like !!!
Wow G! Fantastic video this is. The DLR is my favourite way to travel in London for soo many reasons, you need to ride it again, because the DLR are going to start introducing Brand New Rolling Stock this year, 54 new trains are coming and should all be in service by Summer 2026, so keep your eyes out for that, keep up the amazing content, hopefully another DLR video soon especially when the new trains enter service 😀
I'd love to come ride the new trains!
@@GLovesTrains Yes for sure, can't wait to see them in passenger service tho
Great video G, never heard of DLR before, so I bet it was a pleasant experience. Well done G.
The DLR is a perfect robot line
Its great fun sitting at the front its like being the driver its strange not having a driver. At canary wharf some of them open the doors on both sides so it makes platform changes easier 😅great to see you travelling on different trains G
Very fun trains! Thanks 😀
Brilliant video G, I've been on the DLR a few times, I'll tell you some of those trains do give a good bum massage lol. Canary Wharf is beautiful as with the Olympic Park, I still have yet to do the Cutty Sark, Grenwich park and the Royal Victoria dock though. :)
I try to ride at least a part of the DLR every time when I'm in London (which is not that often since I don't even live in the UK).
Orbit. The name of the red tower at the Olympic Park.
I love the DLR and the fact that one minute you're running alongside mainline trains, the next you're on an elevated section meandering between buildings.
Orbit thanks!
I’ve not been on the DLR in nearly 2 years but it’s such a brilliant system G 😄 you’ll never find me sat anywhere other than at the front! 😂
Even if you have to fight the people there before you! 😂
I think the architecture at Bank Station is fantastic. Next time you visit that there London you should consider taking a trip on one of the river Ubers or other ferry's 👌.
I had quite a few front seat views when I travelled on the DLR.
On some occasions the cover was off and you could see the speedometer so you could see how fast you was going. It had a little dot that told the train how fast it could go. The little dot moved around the dial then the train started off and accelerated to where the dot was.
One thing I remember was descending one of the elevated sections on a very steep incline and there was a queue of trains in front. The little dot went slowly down to zero and the train slowed down and stopped a couple or so sections behind the train in front. When the train had stopped for a few seconds, the little dot moved to the next position. The train crept forward, the little dot returned to zero and the train stopped again. This continued section by section until there was a single section between us and the train in front.
When the train in front moved along, we followed a few seconds later, the little dot moving to and fro for each movement, always keeping a clear section between us.
This was all controlled by the control centre computer knowing where every train on the system was at all times, how fast it was going, if it had stopped and how many sections were between each train.
It was fascinating to watch when the cover was off, and you could see it all in operation.
If you're at Stratford & want a front seat, get the back seat on a unit going north. the next stop is the terminus at Stratford International, where the train changes direction so your back seat becomes the front, for the entire length of the line if you want it!
G you were at Greenwich Park and you didn't straddle the Time Meridian(Greenwich mean time)The trouble with London, I grew up in the SE burbs, their is just too much to see and do,
Didn't a modified first generation dlr train run in the greater Manchester area as a tease for what is now metrolink?
Great video G!
Project Light Rail...took place in March 1987 for around 3 weeks on the Fallowfield Loop line.
A small halt was built on the site of the old Hyde Road station, this temporary halt was named Debdale Park.
An early DLR train was then run from Debdale Park to Reddish Depot, roughly 1.5km using a pantograph from the temporary overhead wire energised at 750v.
Over the 3 weeks, VIP's, politicians, rail industry & local authority bigwigs etc, also the press were in attendance.
When it ended everything was dismantled.
The Fallowfield Loop closed in 1988 and lifted in 1991.
Great video! I remember going on the DLR during Easter 1988 not long after it had been opened. It was a lot shorter in those days!
Haha thanks!
Never thought I’d see you down here in our manor, I was surprised you got off at Canning Town, then realised ‘flowing water’ obvs! Quality vid, bysie byes!
Bysie byes! 😂
Sitting in the front seat is like being a driver 👍🏼
As a Londoner I so love the DLR, it’s an excellent network. Very happy that you came to try it out
Me too 😄
I do love a ride on the DLR😊
Awesome! Railway Spice is back in London
the dlr is great nearest thing to driving one great vlog g
I love to see all the flowing water! 😎
Next time start at Waterloo (Main), getting the Waterloo & City Line to Bank, then head to the DLR platforms. There used to be an old TBM cutter head mounted into one of the walls at Bank on the walk round from the Waterloo & City platforms to the DLR platforms.
remember being in Greenwich during a heatwave in 97... caught the DLR and arriving at Cannon St was a relief as nice and cold down there... until i ascended just one escalator and baking again. DLR is fun though compared to regular tube.
living down south i get to go into London a good few times i really like the DLR and might be a little while yet but the new trains are on their way so keep a track of that for a future visit
Used to catch it daily to Canary Wharf back in early 90’s
Yes Bank/Monument is huge and I have never really worked out the difference between Bank and Monument!I think that Monument is the Circle/District bit and Bank the rest?
Oh this is so cool to see. I just stayed at a hotel at London Docklands a week ago and now there's a video of you wandering about the same places I've just been to :D
Haha cool!
Jeez I'm feeling old. Like G I'm originally from the Northwest of England. The first time I visited Canary Wharf was as a contractor on the day before it opened to the public back in the late 1980's. I was absolutely amazed by it then, and still am. Over the next two decades I was involved in a few construction contracts involving various DLR extensions. I've been living in Australia now for 15 years, but would love to go back and see how Canary Wharf is compared to that day when I first went there in the 1980's.
Ah that's amazing!!
love the dlr its a brillant system and great video mate
Great vlog as always G and as mentioned you will have to return when the new stock is in service and also thought you would have gone to the Meridan Line when you were in Greenwich
Nice video there mate 👍 DLR trains are very nice
congrats on 20k G
Thanks 😀
Great video. Took me right down memory lane. My friend lives in the isle of dogs and often took the same route as you. Getting the front seat is a proper task. Hehe!!
Haha cheers!
Canary Wharf definitely is a beautiful spot, which a lot of people don't realise. A lot of folks think of it as purely a business area 😌
Bow Creek on the "island" built part of the Pura works, years later involved with the demolition
Nice video. Amazing how much investment London receives compared with Manchester. We are still waiting for metro link to Stockport, Bolton and Wigan. Greater Manchester population is a third of Greater London yet receives less than less than a 100th in value.
Snottytastic video as always ❤
Thanks snotty Brigg
It's difficult to get the front on your first try! It's fun if you get the 1st train in the morning, around 6.30, they have a person open up the front cabinet & monitor the systems & track, making sure it's clear.
Great video once again and love the DR Who brolly!
Thanks!
Lovely video about an area in London where I have not been in
Great video of the interesting transport opportunities in East London. The ArcelorMittal Orbit, you saw at Stratford, is well worth climbing (in the lift) for the view at the top and if you're brave enough, you can descend via the tubular slide which is scary but a lot of fun.
Ooo sounds fun!
Great video G ❤
Glad you managed to get to the front 😂 Next time you climb Greenwich hill check out the meridian line and straddle 0 degrees longitude 🤓
I love the DLR. When I first moved to London in 2006(!) I lived in Beckton so used it frequently. The network has expanded and changed a LOT in the last 18 years though. Its barely recognisable now from what it was even then. There's not many transport networks you can say that about
Haha awesome! 😀
Go for the last seat, it's just as fun!
Glad you enjoyed the DLR, G! It goes through so many interesting places, and it's always fun to see out the front. I was a teenager when it first opened, it's amazing how much it has grown since, and how much the area has developed and changed. I also worked in Canary Wharf for a while - that was fun.
Oh, don't stay at the Britannia Hotel!
Haha certainly stands out there doesn't it 😂
Awesome Video G Loves Trains 😄😄
Great video 😊 got a definite soft spot for Pudding Mill Station myself - been via a couple of times on my own London adventures, got London's olympic swimming pool walkable and ABBA arena for the fab Voyage concerts 😍😍
Super! 😀
Thinking about it, I don't think I have ever been on the DLR either. Thanks for the inspiration!
No worries!
Great video I will have to have a go on the DLR , I will look for your next videoI
Thanks!
I wish more British cities had this kind of thing.
Great video as usual. You must try the cable car when you have the chance. Great views and quite exciting on a windy day!
Will do!
Goodness me, today's episode is GDrivesTrains! We must bring you along should we ever embark on a desert expedition - seems you have a knack for finding flowing water!
Haha funny 😂
Awesome video. Love the area around canary wharf etc
Beautiful there!
That Bank Station Building, aside from the "wall" structures to the subway;s the "hole" in the side of Bank of England and Blomberg Building is that the first Bank building entrance above ground level ? (question for young Jago Hazzard)
Front seat is always the mission priority 😋 Only real way to get them is either be lucky or get them at the terminus stations!
Wait and pounce 😂
I used to work at Bank station - it's ENORMOUS.
BIGGGG
I love the DLR - if I can, I try and go on every time! And Greenwich is lovely isn’t it?
Lovely jubbly!
The DLR are getting new trains very soon.
Surprised you've never been on the DLR. It's always a fun trip (if a little bit bouncy....but that just adds to the fun. lol).
I have never managed to get a front seat on the DLR!
I think I did most DLR legs on their first day of opening ,(dont think I did Stratford International nor Woolwich)
Oh gosh the amount of panic attacks I've had at Bank station waiting for the DLR to take me to Limehouse 🤦🏻.When I used to go to school many years ago, I used to travel from Bethnal Green on the central line to Bank, and change at Bank for the DLR to Limehouse and every single time the station was boiling and I would go into full panic attack mode when the platform filled with other passengers waiting and yet I still kept doing it 🤦🏻. Now I much prefer taking the bus anywhere I'm going around London 😂.
I can understand that feeling!
