- A Super Scenic Train Journey to Kyle of Lochalsh! I rode with Scotrail along the Kyle of Lochalsh line and loved every single second! The views up in the Scottish Highlands really are breathtaking! :)

I took that journey as my first visit to Scotland in 1974. It stole my heart. ❤
As someone who is stuck home sick for Christmas, I needed this!
Aw glad it helped 😄
@@GLovesTrains You should do The Orkneys. No trains, but a nice ferry and a decent if sparse bus service. Book a taxi in advance to get from Thurso station to the ferry terminal.
@@thehaprust6312 Book a taxi! You can walk it from Thurso, in the snow on New Year's Eve....
Best book a taxi 🤓
I'm sorry to hear that
The views in the highlands of bonnie Scotland are always spectacular 🏴 Merry Christmas when it comes G 😊🎄
Merry Christmas!
I've been there as well in 2018 on a holiday, lovely region over there. The Kyle Line was built in 2 stages by the Dingwall & Skye Railway. Firstly from Dingwall to Stromeferry (53 miles/85km) in 1868-1870, opening in August 1870. The remainder of just 10 miles/16km was built in the 1890's and opened in 1897. There was a branch to the spa town of Strathpeffer which opened in 1885 and closed in 1946. Surprisingly the station building in Strathpeffer has been preserved and repurposed. The stations I visited were Achnasheen and Stratcarron. Both station buildings dates from 1869 and in Achnasheen, the original railway bridge from 1869 across the river Bran is still there. The scenery of both stations is indeed lovely.
Thanks again for a film packed with enthusiasm! The Loch you couldn't identify was Loch Sgamhain, identified by the two wee islands we could briefly pick out.
It was 1977 the last time I visited Scotland in my train spotting days, i must come again in my retirement, great video thanks 😊.
You managed to find the only UK train that wasn’t cancelled, and, set off on time 👏 👏 👏
Uber jealous. This is serious bucket list stuff!! 🎉
Thanks for the video G, all I can say is AWESOME!!😎🚃🚃🇬🇧💚
One of the world's greatest train journeys. Especially the bit from Plockton to Kyle. Travelled this line in 1978 with my late friend. The train slowed by a cottage in the middle of nowhere and the driver's mate handed a TV to the cottage residents. The speed of the train allowed the cottage resident to nip back in carrying the TV then emerge with a 4-pack of beer which he handed to the guard at the rear....like something out of Whisky Galore and just one memory from an unforgettable trip.
Thank you for a wonderful video! Cheers from Canada! ❤🇨🇦❤
Cheers!!
Taking this line was one of my very first videos! Great to see you riding on this line with its fantastic scenery!
Thanks a lot, Dom! 😀
Your enthusiasm is infectious!
the Kyle of Lochalsh line looks very scenic & the area again looks very scenic & im loving the bridge of Sky as the views from the bridge & the views of the bridge look amazing brilliant vlog
That was a brilliant video G. So good to see you in Inverness, I live about 25 miles away. That is indeed a beautiful journey. For me Scotland is the best part of the UK for scenery. Its Christmas day and I am laid up with winter vomiting bug, so your film has really made me feel better! Merry Christmas to you and thanks for all the great content in 2024.
Thanks a lot, merry Christmas Carl!
Scotland is another world.
I also took the same journey in the summer after taking the cally sleeper up to Inverness.
I also walked the same bridge and was in awe at the amount of dolphins swimming up the river.
Brilliant, G! The ScotRail 158's are no doubt my favourite 158's! They have pretty much the same information screens as on the Turbostars!
I watched another rail enthusiast who even said it's better than the West Highland Line! I'll have to try them both out to make my own conclusion!
Lovely place is Kyle of Lochalsh! Thanks for sharing!
Ah interesting, we both definitely need to try out the West Highland Line next year! Thanks very much Reece 😀
A good roundtrip idea for those of you/us in the central belt is to take the train to Inverness, this one to Kyle Of Lochalsh and the scenic bus to the very scenic Portree, cheap overnight B & B or youth hostel, with the very scenic bus return to Glasgow the day after. Perfect weekend break. Portree has some of the best fish and chips takeouts in the UK, the fish is so fresh it still has a personality. I loved this video, btw.
Great video! Love taking the train around Scotland, need to explore a little further North
Thanks! I took that journey in 1975 on my second day of a four month European wander. Flew into Glasgow from America and asked the tourist office where to go and she said "Inverness". Great advice.
Engagingly presented, well made wee film. Go on yersel! 👍
(If ye take a piece of dark fabric and a pair of spring-clamps to attach it to the overhead rack, or just take your arms out of your jacket, pull it above your head and make a little tent held against the glass, you'll cut out the reflections from inside the train. 😁 All the best.)
Haha cheers!
When I was a young lad in my twenties, I bought an all-line rail rover and went to the Kyle as you did. The train was a loco-hauled British Rail Mark1 coach affair, but it included a buffet car! In those days, there was a ferry to meet the train and take you across to Kyleakin. I went over the sea to Skye, had a cup of tea in the café and then went back to Intervess. Definitely one of the greatest rail journeys in the country. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for uploading!
Did similar in 1979 - halcyon days!!!
That sounds absolutely brilliant!
This is one of the best lines I have travelled on. I still remember walking from Plockton to Duncraig (request stop) in flip flops. A good walk in the rain (not forecasted) lol. Thanks for sharing.
Plockton on the Kyle Line is worth a visit, it was made famous by the TV show Hamish MacBeth starring Robert Carlyle. Next time you're in Kyle do the walk up the Plock, it give you amazing view looking over the Skye Bridge. There's a glass bottom boat operating from Kyle in the summer too, it's great fun and you'll probably see a lot seals!
I enjoy your channel! Scotland what a beautiful place. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Thanks a lot!
Yah it’s GLovesTrains. Merry Christmas. Scotland is still amazing country to visit and the Kyle of Lochalsh is so beautiful.
Merry Christmas!
Used to travel north from Inverness years ago when trains were diesel locomotive hauled. I used to stay on the north side of the Dornoch Firth. You could hear the engines from miles away with about six coaches as they ran along the southern side between Tain and Ardgay. I live near Inverness now but hail originally from Chorley! We have all the scenery, no motorways and plenty of space to live in! You can’t beat it.
And plenty of 158's ha ha ha.
Great video as always. So refreshing! Can I suggest a Freedom/Spirit of Scotland rail rover ticket, 8 days in 12 or 15 (can’t remember which). Covers all trains north of Carlisle and Berwick (except Caledonian Sleeper), all Calmac Ferries and some long distance buses. I have done this several times in last 23 years, sometimes alone, sometimes with my brother. We are aged either side of 70 and stay in youth hostels, so it’s a cheap ‘doo’. You meet lots of interesting and international people in summer, and the social intercourse is great (yes, I did say SOCIAL - and not just because my wife may read this). No hanky panky, if you know what I mean. Keep up the good work - you are a breath of fresh air. My only criticism is the town from whence you come - the Sworn Enemy (one of many) as I am a Wakefield Trinity supporter.
I traveled this line in April with two friends and we also had a great trip we carried on to Skye by coach thank you so much 😁😁
Another Gem of a video done with so much enthusiasm ..my favourite part of Scotland ..all your videos bring me happiness
Aw thanks very much!
Glad you enjoyed the journey in my homeland and had pretty decent weather into the bargain. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas!
When I rode the line, I did it in April but love the low clouds during the ride and at the Kyle of Lochalsh. Stunning! Would love to go back there at some point, great video G and Merry Christmas
I can definitely see why you love this line so much! Thanks Cyber and merry Christmas! 😄
Yes, sitting on the right is best for this line. It gets tricky if you travel from Edinburgh to Glasgow and then up the West Highland Lind because the train reverses out of Fort William and there are lovely views on both sides depending on where you are in the journey. Thanks so much for doing this trip - I did it years back and then took my visiting parents along it as the views are lovely.
If you travel in the middle of the day, you can have a carriage to yourself....
I did this journey back in 1994 spectacular the day was snowing and the sheep were indistinguishable in the fields
Hi G,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Thank you for all the videos you share
Merry Christmas!
Absolutely stunning scenery cracking video. Merry Christmas 🎄☃️ to you ❤
Merry Christmas!
I am glad you enjoyed the route from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh by train.
Hopefully you will visit the region again.
In 2022 I took Scottish Citylink buses to Uig on Skye.. On the way back from Portree & Kyleakin to Inverness our bus was diverted along the route where you can see Eilean Donan Castle, then through the Glens to Loch Ness with nice views...Nessie not guaranteed
There are also buses from Skye to Fort William.. then the bus goes through dramatic Glencoe to Loch Lomond. The bus travels along the Bonnie Banks, ending up with a drive along the River Clyde into Glasgow.
This is a trip I'd have loved to have taken when I worked at Cyngor Ardal Caithness. I'm going to try a weekly Scottish rail rover one day.
I have done many of the scenic routes in Britain, bar down to South West, my bucket list train down to Penzance. The benefit for me, apart from the scenic routes, is it gave me a chance to cross the bridge to Skye for my one and only visit there. It was pouring with rain, but I had a nice cuppa on the otherside of the bridge :)
Thank you for sharing G. Happy new year 🎉
The journey to Kyle of Lochalsh is wonderful. You'll need to come back in summer when it doesn't look so much like a black and white photograph!
Wow, you gave us a corker for Christmas! It's such a stunning area, I hope you get to see more of it in the future. I recommend Plockton. Happy Christmas, G. 🎄
Thanks and merry Christmas!
I took my 80 year old mother to Skye (by train from Cardiff) about 5 years ago. It was mam's first visit to Scotland. We stayed in Inverness.
I am so full of admiration for you walking over the Skye bridge. Another vLog of beautiful scenery and this time - I've been there!
Have a peaceful Merry Christmas.
Thanks a lot and merry Christmas!
Lovely scenary even in so so weather - would look stunning in bright sunlight, more so if there is snow on the hilltops!
Wow it almost went melons up and G got on the wrong train 🚂 glad that wasn't the case. Happy new year! 🎊🕛
Haha yeah glad I heard the announcement 😂
Hope You have A Great Christmas G and Thank You for doing so many Blogs in Scotland. I am ashamed to say I have never visited these places. I am A Typical Glaswegian, lol. Concrete and Fumes. I will be doing some trips next Year though. 😃
Haha thanks and merry Christmas!
Absolutely breathtaking scenery on the Kyle of Lochalsh line. Funny enough, I've only ridden on this line once, back in 1992, so I think I'm due another visit. But at least I managed to ride the Skye ferry, which was free to foot passengers
Such beautiful scenery in the Highlands of Scotland. I took the train to Inverness and spent the day there. Beautiful place up there.
Amazing railway line
I did the journey in May 1997 and you shall come back in the spring and observe all rohedendon which is adorable
What a gorgeous trip. That view at the end was fabulous!
That was a beautiful journey G. Hills, woodland and flowing water. What more could you want. Apparently ScotRail are known for their dirty windows so I am pleased you found one that was relatively clean. Can't believe the train had so few passengers though. Great video . Thanks for posting.
Soooo much better than the far north line, which is still a great line.
Merry Christmas 😊🤓
We need a poll on that one! 😂 merry Christmas!
@@GLovesTrains No, it's Kyle all day long as a line 🙂. But would I rather end in Thurso with the option of onwards to Stromness?! Now there's a poll🤓
Love your videos.
That's my fav route when I studied in Scotland
although it takes like 5-6 hrs in total from Aberdeen
The scenic view absolutely worth it, from Inverness all the way to Kyle..
Miss the old days !
Breathtaking for sure
Went on this line last year, and it was absolutely beautiful…. We saw it just after it snowed and my goddess it was just beautiful, please do try this journey again in the snow, you will *not* regret it, it was one of the most beautiful journeys I’ve ever had. Merry Christmas!
I'll try! Merry Christmas 😀
Now that is something I will do one day, as it's not massively far from where I live. Getting to Inverness is a doddle, less than an hour on the train so I could do this in a day, maybe. Had a journey on one of ScotRail's 158s today, and like yours, it was half-empty! Last time I was up near Kyle of Lochalsh was for a family wedding at the stunning Eilean Donan Castle. Glad you enjoyed yourself so much!
Delightful video. Thank you.
Thanks 😊
I've been waiting on this one ever since you posted the Far North video, and it didn't disappoint. What a stunning journey that is. A fab Christmas Eve present too to sit back and watch. Have a great Christmas 🎄 😄
Glad you enjoyed, have a great Christmas too!
@@GLovesTrains Thank you 😊
Beautiful beautiful beautiful!!! Thank you so much!!! 😂
Thanksss youuu
Great video! And a beautiful rail journey. I think I last did this line behind a Class 26 and three Mk1 coaches and then took a ferry to Kyleakin as there was no bridge back then.
Thanks! Sounds brill 😀
@@GLovesTrains Can assure you the days of class 26 diesel locos and MkI stock was heaven travelling through heaven!!
I took that trip many years ago, before there was a bridge to Skye. I still think of it as the best railway journey I've ever had.
I work on the railway line sometimes up in that neck of the woods certainly is a stunning place if ever back up stop in at Plockton what a wonderful wee village it is, in the summer it's a busy wee place. Water is crystal clear 😀 great video loved it
Definitely will do, thanks a lot 😁
Hi G thx for another amazing video. I love trains and love walking too. I watch many transport videos by various of you vloggers. I am impressed how you make such fun and professional videos. It's absolutely fantastic for the viewers as we can vicariously enjoy a train journey and some lovely scenery without leaving the house or even spending any money. Please keep up the good work which brings great joy and escape to us viewers thx Michael.
Thanks very much Michael!
Absolutely stunning views G i hope you have a very happy Christmas 🎄🎅🤶 and i look forward to seeing your amazing journeys in 2025
Hope you have a great Christmas too!
@GLovesTrains thank you
Just a wee suggestion, sort of from another comment on here, there are some stunning parts of Scotland that can be reached by rail and ferry. Glasgow to Oban will open up the likes of Mull (which is really a short hop), or Glasgow to Ardrossan and the ferry across to Arran (super accessible)
Great suggestion. Have done both trips many of times. Ferry from Oban over to Mull, connecting bus down to Tobermory, or bus to Finaphort and wee Ferry over to Iona, a great day trip. Local buses in Arran will take you around the whole Island so you get to see most of it. Again, totally doable as a day trip. Cheers!
Brilliant video G, those views on the Kyle of Lochalsh line do look stunning. :)
Good to see you ended up in kyleakin where I stay, I regularly take the train to Inverness
Wow!!!! That was amazing scenery 🤩 so beautiful!!! Thanks G for all your incredible videos you give us! 👍 everyone one is always enjoyable and so interesting to watch! 😃 Merry Christmas 🎄🤶and a Happy New year 🥳 to you and all the very best for 2025 🎉🙌💚🥂
Thanks very much and merry Christmas!
I travelled this line several years ago, probably before Michael Palin travelled on his "Great Railway " journey. The train then was a class 37 with hauled stock with an observation carriage at the rear. The journey was staffed by a Yorkshire lass (Barbara) who gave us passengers an informative commentary of the route. She had been aboard the train when Michael Palin travelled the route.
It's a beautiful line up in Scotland, I've been on it early this year and loved it every bit of the journey.
Great video G! Looked stunning!
Fantastic video!
She is breathtaking. She is getting prettier and prettier! ❤
Wonderful journey, I was drinking single malt last night, so thanks for the hangover train ride.
Scotland is a beautiful place with lots to see and do, I came here on holiday over 20 years ago and I am still here!
Another superb video. Scotland is a magical place. Merry Christmas, have a good one..👍
Merry Christmas!
this and the Inverness > Thurso line are my two favourite journeys I have ever done on the train.
I ❤Scotland. Can’t wait to do this trip hopefully soon. Right now on a coach from London to Cardiff which was delayed for 2hrs due to a flat tire😢
Oh noes!
Nice video. It certainly is a beautiful line, and there are some really nice places to visit, including my favourite UK station Attadale.
Great views great video great way to spend a day 👍👍✅✅
Good video hen
Brilliant Kyle video G. Stunning scenery.
Keep up the good work 👍 Squishy babies 🤣
Cheers haha!
We did that journey during June and the trains were packed. Mostly with large tour groups.
Loved this video G. Like i said previously, this is another line we plan to do next October - let's hope for clean windows & a sunny day ! :)
Id have waited for summer to do the highlands lines. Yes we get sunny weather in scotland lol. Only issue is on the west coast........midges!!!
Best time to travel in thst direction is the evening. The sunset across to the islands is stupendous.
Merry Christmas G. The Kyle of Lochalsh is such an amazing place to visit in Scotland. And I still do like your British Rail scarf. 😊
Merry Christmas!
Awesome footage. Well done…
Beautiful and brilliant scenery!! Merry Christmas to you and your family. Take care
Merry Christmas!
G happy Christmas I bet it was so peaceful and relaxing to go on the skybridge my jaw dropped when I saw the view. I will be doing this train journey you have inspired me
Merry Christmas!
@@GLovesTrains thanks G I changed my name around a bit still thinking of a name
Wow, absolutely breathtaking what a fantastic journey, and a carriage to yourself, perfect. Great video and superb filming ,thanks.
Great video, haven't been up that way for a long time. Hope you enjoyed it too
Happy Christmas G. I agree with you G the Kyle is absolutely stunning. It was a shame when I did the Kyle line, it was sideways rain. One line I'd love to do again.
Great little video! Well put together!
Thanks 😀
Great video G, I did this and the Far North line this summer (fit into one day due to a handy change at Dingwall) so thanks for allowing me ro relive it! It was a lot busier in summer!
Your most scenic video of yours I have seen. Well done.
Another fantastic blog simply stunning G thanks for taking us on your journeys. Wishing u a happy Christmas 🎄🎅🎁🤗
Merry Christmas Ian!
@GLovesTrains happy new year to you too 🎉 🎉🤗
