I am Scottish and I am delighted that you described this as a dream trip, and the possibility of waking up while travelling through the Scottish Highlands.
It's especially nice when someone who isn't really from Scotland is prepared to travel up and is mature enough to appreciate the scenery.
Yes, the natural beauty of Scotland is quite frankly stunning in many parts.

Fantastic trip, bringing back memories of the half dozen times I took the Sleeper between Inverness and Euston. I lived briefly in Thurso, one of the few Americans living there in 2008, and taking the Sleeper was an adventure. I see there are new cars on the line now and a nicer looking room. Back when I took the service the First Group was stilling running the service with those maroon colored EWS diesel engines pulling the train. Lovely trip, thank you!!!

I come from a country where overnight trains are very common, a standard feature, so I am particularly happy to learn that it is possible to get excited about a first class compartment on an overnight train. Keep up the good work, and best of luck!

I've been fortunate enough to use the Caledonian Sleeper many times, for business, to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fort William and Inverness. Fort William is the best journey for stunning scenery in the early morning, but Inverness is a beautiful city. When you have a long journey to make, what could be better than doing it whilst you're asleep!? Compared with flying, which means getting up at 4am, getting a train or taxi to the airport, hanging around there for hours, doing a short flight then the journey from the airport to the city, the sleeper is so much more civilised. Drinks and supper in the Club Car served by helpful and pleasant staff, wonderfully comfy bed (I always sleep very well but sometimes wake up when the train stops moving) and a lovely breakfast - always better in the Club Car than in the room, I would say. The fact that the new rolling stock has an en-suite option is great, I'm at that time of life when nature calls during the night and having to get dressed to go to the end of the carriage on the old rolling stock was a pain. But they have put the price up a good deal!
I've used sleeper trains in many other parts of the world too and always had a great experience. I so wish they had gone ahead with the NightStar sleepers to Europe, because I often have to go to Germany, Spain, Italy etc for a day's work, and it would have been so much better than flying.
Great as the Caledonian Sleeper is, I have never felt the compunction to put my knickers on my head, though.
    Thanks for posting.

I'm Welsh and my wife and I did Euston to Edinburgh and back on the Caledonian Sleeper earlier this year, partly for the experience, and partly for the practical thinking that it's basically a hotel room during the travelling time, although it did require a separate train from Cardiff to London and back too.
It brings back memories to have seen this, especially the rattles! Edinburgh was delightful and I wished we had time to ride the trams there.
We did the lowest tier of cabin, so we didn't get lounge access at either station, and we didn't have the same options as a Club passenger would for breakfast which may explain the different menu you saw. We didn't have the en-suite loo, of course. The room itself was the same, though, as far as I can see, except we didn't have the extra ear plug that you got - clearly that's reserved for the higher tiers of customers such as yourself!

  • @jimbo992

I've always wanted to try a sleeper train, especially this one as I love Scotland! But there is one thing that's always put me off. Bear with me here, but picture this... You've just settled in to your cabin with your betrothed. One thing leads to another and you're in the initial stages of disrobing. Then there is a knock at the door, "Ah, thats the vegan sausage roll we ordered" and you eagerly, half naked, open the door. Stood there is a massive man with huge metal teeth who punches you back into the cabin and a fight ensues. Your betrothed is accidentally folded into the bed as it flips up and the fight continues, smashing up the cabin. Eventually, you break the lamp and push the exposed wires into the big man's metal teeth, shocking him. You then take the opportunity to kick him out of the window, smashing it. You've been victorious, but now you have to spend the night with an open window blowing cold air into the room all night. I blame the 70s and 80s James Bond films.

Another great video, you must have put it together in double quick time. Well done securing the berth, it does seem to be a very popular train often booked up in advance. The sleepers are far better than in the days when I used to travel overnight to Inverness and Fort William... they were MK1s in blue and grey livery, hauled by Class 26s or 37s. You can tell I'm one of your older subscribers. I'm wondering where next week's vidoe will take us to. Lots of laughs, smiles and information along the way. Brilliant!

Just discovered your channel. Top video! Such enthusiasm!
I did the sleeper from Euston way back in 2001. There had been a rail crash some months earlier and the sleepers weren't running all the way through. I was supposed to get the sleeper to Glasgow Central and then transfer to Glasgow Queen Street to catch a regular train to Spean Bridge, my final destination. However, the sleeper ran very late and I missed the connection. ScotRail gave me my own free Glasgow City black cab up the A82 all the way to Spean Bridge!

I’ve only ever been on the old Caledonian Sleeper. Used to occasion use it to take day out in London. Since the switch to the new stock, it’s become too expensive.
I do remember being shocked by Euston the first time I did it. I thought we’d been shunted into some remote part of the station, but no, the entire train shed was like some sort of underground bunker! 😂
Filling in your breakfast choice seems more complicated than I remember in the past. I remember ordering my breakfast online when booking.

But I fondly remember the Mark 3 sleeper (which you can still get between London Paddington and Penzance, on the Night Riviera). I also remember the Mark 1 and Mark 2 day coaches, and even the sleeper when it went to Stranraer Harbour. I have done sleeper trains in Denmark, Switzerland to France, Spain and across Canada. I have done virtually every railway in Britain, Ireland, Europe, Alaska and Canada, and some of the rest of America. Any questions / tips - just ask. Happy to help. Vic

I stayed recently in a holiday home that was right next to one of the stations and the Caledonian Sleeper would wake us up every morning at about 6:30!

I think it’s about time you bought your first Interrail pass and came to visit us in mainland Europe, and start exploring the railway systems over here. I think you would be amazed.
My suggestion for your first Euro trip:
    Eurostar to Paris.
Cross Paris from the Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon.
Take the high speed TGV from Paris to Milan.
Then, take the night train from Milan to Palermo in Sicily. This night train goes on board the only remaining train ferry in Europe.
Then take a Ryanair flight from Sicily back to Stansted and home.
I reckon that would be a good series of Euro blogs to start off with. Once you start your Euro adventures, you won’t look at Northern trains in the same way ever again.
Or if you just want a taster, take the night ferry from Harwich to Hoek of Holland and spend a couple of days riding the trains in my adopted country of the Netherlands. I am originally from London and used to work on the railway in the UK as a train guard on the East Coast mainline out of Kings Cross.

Really entertaining vlog, I'm yet to travel on the new Mk5 stock. Had many happy trips to Scotland, used to travel direct from Bristol but that finished many moons ago. You should have kept the blind up... watching the night sky whizz by from your pillow! Thanks again, appreciate a lady enjoying rail travel.

I've taken sleepers in the US and Europe, and although small, this was definitely the nicest train cabin I've ever seen. Amtrak is known for them but they're way overdue for a refresh, with some rooms over 30 years old and definitely showing it. And I've only slept in couchettes and converted day compartments on European trains and those can't compare. It would be interesting to see you try out some European sleepers someday, like the Nightjet, although definitely try to bring Lucy along if you do. Solo cabins are nice but two is even nicer.

Glad you enjoyed it. Something I'd like to do one day. Rode an overnight from Calais to Milan back in the 80s. Sat up in a seat all night. Glad i did it though.

I’ve done the Euston to Aberdeen run a few times but that was almost 30 years ago.
Being 6’4” the bed was very tight
Only had one trip without staring with a stranger, very odd.
One guy was very coy about what he did, turned out he was a submarine captain.
    Looks much posher now

Nice to see you up in Inverness, I think there is now a vegan place in the victorian market. I've taken the train from inverurie to Inverness, a turbostar and enjoyed it. My nearest mainline station is Aberdeen to go south. Mackies is a company 20 miles away, I think they do vegan chocs now. Just checked online they don't.
