G has done that . I've not done it Northbound to Inverness, only southbound from. I've tried many times and tickets were either unavailable for the dates I needed but my time on it Southbound means it's not exactly unusual for tickets to be sold out (when I used it last month from Inverness, it was announced as sold out which I suspect is partially due to seated Deerstalker passengers using those seats from Edinburgh).

@@GabrielsReviews Yes. We get a choice. A double berth with double bed (no ensuite) or a accessable twin bunks (no ensuite). Both are large as they accomadate more then one wheelchair. I stayed in the double bed last year with my partner and we wasn't impressed with bed as the mattress was really thin. We pay same price as a classic room (£100 to £200) no matter the berth. There's a disabled toilet next to berth. I found the ordeted food to berth was amazing. Just very expensive. The cooked breakfast was poor though.

Back in 2002 or there abouts, I had a interesting journey.
I was due to travel on a Cardiff to Paddington as far as Reading and onto Horsham.
Ok, at Cardiff, heard a announcement they couldn't locate the driver, so a slight delay already.
We was further delayed by the time we reached Bristol Parkway, held at Swindon to allow us to pick up extra passengers from other services. At this point, the guard asked us to remove any unused seat reservation cards as we made a extra stop at Didcot.
Opposite me, was a mother with her two daughters on their way to Heathrow. I wonder if they made their flight?
Arriving Reading some 90 minutes late, a journey time of 3 hours.
Looked for my onward connection, just missed it and meant another hour wait, knowing I would have a further connection at Redhill - knocked it on the head at this point and headed home.
Thankfully, this was the only journey where things went pear shaped.

What a shame you didn't get to Inverness. You MUST retry and it's really surreal travelling so far on one train, not to mention a beautiful destination. I did the trip in the opposite direction recently (just four days before your attempt) and luckily, everything went smoothly. Travelling south means you depart around 8am so you get to try both the Breakfast and Lunch menus too! A full cooked breakfast while looking out on the snowy Cairngorms takes a lot of beating!
Just a note about seat selection: You can reserve a seat for free on the LNER website wherever you buy your ticket (or even if you don't have one). That's quite useful when travelling on a rover or InterRail ticket, as I was. You can also modify or cancel it later, which most other train companies don't allow.

Sorry to hear you didn't manage to get all the way to Inverness. Do give it another try sometime soon, maybe with a day out to Kyle or the Far North while you're here.
You did get a good seat.
A couple of weeks ago I travelled to Edinburgh sitting at the back of the third 1st Coach. I think they probably didn't have as many requests for the full breakfast as usual that morning and when they got to me had plenty left over. When it arrived I did notice there were two fried eggs, and then beneath them I found there were three slices of bacon. I know where I'll try to get a seat next time, but don't tell everyone! 🤫

One cool little tip about travelling First Class from King's Cross is that there's a "secret" gate line just outside the lounge that takes you straight to the platforms via a bridge and escalators. So far out of all the first class services I've tried, LNER's feels like the best.
