- I HIRED a CANAL BOAT! (29/06/22). I spent 8 hours on board the traditional red boat, Ruston, where I learnt how to drive, moor up and do a 3-point turn. It was truly one of the best days of my life; I loved every second! :D

Narrowboat travel is the most relaxing way to move around the UK - so serene
Blimey, checking the weed hatch every 30 mins is way over the top.
Looks like you had a cracking day. Canal life, canal speed. Lovely.
Just what we was told, thanks!
Brilliant video G! That looks like fun
I find canals so peaceful. Luckily down south, I live near the Grand Union Canal and cycle many miles along the towpath. 😀
Great video 👍☺️
Thanks James!
Great video. I have personally hired boats from Ellerbeck Narrowboats and have done for many years. I was even hiring boats from here when it used to be called L & L Cruisers (that's a long time ago). I have hired all three boats on several occasions and have travelled in both directions (sometimes both directions in the same day - can be tricky but can be done if you don't moor up). The sights you see along the way are great even in bad weather plus the added bonus of relaxation as you take everything in.... perfect day out (and one you don't need to re-mortgage your house for either). With the weed hatch though, you don't need to open it every 30 minutes (you only need to open it if you can't clear the prop using engine power), you simply bring the throttle to neutral and then into full reverse and back to neutral - repeat a couple of times if needed... if you still experience vibration on the tiller or power loss - this is when you moor up and open the weed hatch (if you're not confident doing this, simply ring base and Lucien would send someone to you and assist). All in all though, great video and i hope you enjoyed your day :)
watching this video has really made my week, thanks G
Thanks John!!
Thank you for your lovely peaceful video. Stay safe girl. Love from Toulouse France, lots of great canals here!!
Thanks George!
That looks well cool glad you had a good trip, take care
Thanks!!
I would love to do that xx
Fantastic video as always
If I did that, the canal boat would sink in the first 5 minutes
Well done you. Totally different from your usual content. But brilliant to see
Thanks Paul!
@@GLovesTrains
I’ve always loved trains but never done the northwest. The narrow boat must have been so relaxing it certainly was watching you.
Looking forward to your next vlog x
You did good for your first time driving a canal boat. Will you be doing it again an do some locks next time?
Awesome.🙂🙂🙂
Haha we'll see!
@@GLovesTrains 🙂🙂
Wow you do keep right on canals just like all sane people 😱
DID YOU DO A POO IN THERE IT GOES FLOATING IN RIVER
You should have headed the other way and gone under bridge 69.
Yes, I'm immature.
Next time!
By gum, it was like a Lorna Jane adventure…all these RUclips travel vloggers…
That's a LOT of flowing water, hope you had a awesome time on the canal G or GLovesCanalBoats
That's me hahaha
Damn, where's Rosie and Jim??
Catching up with your travels having come across you while searching for another railway vlogger, some bloke called Geoff ;) As a railway photographer of nearly 50 years who has lived on a narrowboat for 20 years this video was right up my street!
Another lovely video full of beautiful views, both off the boat, and on! 😜 We do love an old bus, or BUZZ as you'd say baby haha xxx
It is bus! 😜xxx
@@GLovesTrains Hmmm, I thought it were a 'BOZZ' in The Wigan!(?)
Beautiful video G! So inspiring shows what can be done in a day. Thanks for sharing, it has brightened my morning start , Ray x
You going through the Standedge (Canal) Tunnel next? 🤣🤣
Great video, GLovesNarrowboats! I doubt Cruising The Cut nor The Narrowboat Experience did much better on their first go. (BTW, I think both their narrowboats might still be for sale, if you're interested!)
I just found out recently that Geoff Marshall is a gongoozler, and now I find you love narrowboats too? This is tremendous news!
Haha! I do 😄
"Cruisin the cut" is a great set of videos, and a pity he sold his boat.
I agree "G" needs to do an occasional series of boatin vids
Ahhhh I’ve always wanted to do thisssss!!!!
It’s on my buckets list to do 3 days to a week like this, it seems so much fun!
Great video, stay safe 😀👍
It's a good one to have on the bucket list!
Beautiful video G! So inspiring shows what can be done in a day. Thanks for sharing, it has brightened my morning start , Ray x
Hi Were at my local station of Bolton
You didn't go to Blackburn or Clayton-Le-Moors! I have an ankle injury due to ice skating on the Leeds Liverpool canal in Clayton-Le-Moors...Ramdon I know but hey ho 😂 Talking of walking the Leeds Liverpool canal, I cycled from Clayton to Skipton, my bloody legs were like jelly when I got to Skipton, so I did what any sane person does. Hopped on the train to Leeds, then a West Yorkshire Metro 155 back to Accy. Ah, they were the days.
Trains Station 🚉
Good video full supporting
full watching new RUclipsr

stay connected 💚💜
That really your boat being hired
You don't have to keep checking the weed hatch
Excellent video. Before lockdown I walked from work in Chorley to Fredericks for an ice cream every lunchtime up the canal.
The skewed bridge under the railway has a periwinkle brick design and is very rare. I have cycled and walked the entire Leeds and Liverpool canal. A great book I used was "Walks from the Leeds-Liverpool canal" by Mary Welsh. Splits it up into 34 mostly circular walks and has loads of useful information in it.
Thanks Raymond I'll check that out!
Do you work at 'Two Step' chippy in Sheffield?
If not, it's your twin sister!
Only on the weekdays
They also don't know that they will need a boat license
Beautiful video G! So inspiring shows what can be done in a day. Thanks for sharing, it has brightened my morning start , Ray x
Aww thankyou Ray!
you filmed this on my birthday... But this is a good vlog :)
Thanks!! Hope you had a great bday
@@GLovesTrains I did, thanks G :D
Very nice.
Have you never noticed previously that the panel in front of a sink tends not to be a drawer!? ....It's just lazy workmanship!
You didn't need to check the weed hatch at all.
We've hired canal boats on many occasions; three times on the Leeds and Liverpool.
You know when you've got stuff caught on your prop as you stop going forwards.
I like how all the boats are named after engine makers: Ruston, Mirrlees and Crossley.
Great video. A new spin off channel g loves boats. P. S, love, the, way you say there ☺️
I'd definitely recommend booking a boat for a week or two & doing a decent length trip, maybe over the Pennines or a loop around the Cheshire or four counties rings, you'll need a spare couple of thousand pounds though!
went out on my first day boat this weekend fucking loved every second having a smoke while driving a boat makes you feel like your the boss hahaha
that looked great fun did this for a week years ago stay well
Nice video many thanks. Maybe consider living on a canal boat? Train lines nearly always run next to a canal, maybe a great combination!
Cool idea! Makes for a somewhat different video! Nice! Too bad with the rain though
Did you get the body cam? Only recently found your site so not watching videos in any chronological order.
All I can hear playing in my head after seeing the Thumbnail is this classic Kids TV theme song ruclips.net/video/ykr358a0m44/видео.html
Looks like a really cool experience. Nice canal boat. I would love to do this experience myself! I enjoyed watching.
Thanks Sam, it was amazing!
The boatyard bus cafe is only a few minutes away for me. It’s a great place to sit by the canal with a brew and maybe some food and just watch the world go by 🙂
We hired a day boat (on the lower peak) a few years ago and loved it, we have now had several holidays on the canals, but I am surprised that they advised you to check the weed hatch every half an hour, check it in the morning, then you can feel when the prop is fouled by the loss of power, usually a quick burst of full reverse clears it.
Never knew you can drive a boat on a canal. This is some new experience. I do like your adventures. Keep up the good work G. 😄
Anyone can, no licence or any other paperwork or experience necessary
Surely you sail a boat and drive a car ?
No sails on a canal boat, I'd say you helm it
@@JB-ek4yx You "pilot" a boat, surely? If you move goods on the boat, it is "car go". If you move the same goods by road, you are "shipping" them. I hope this clears things up...🤔😁👍
Is this what they call a narrow escape?
It’s Heath Charnock, well done good navigation along the Lanky
How about a 'Trainspotting from the Canals' series?
Lovely video. Maybe the first GLovesCanals series.
Would love to see you do Britain by water ways along the canals, when I was younger due to problems with the house we lived in at the time we had to spend 6 weeks on a narrow boat and it was incredible, we did the Cheshire ring and the 4 counties! Some great scenery to take in, so yeah that would be an awesome series to do!!
Just recently started watching your videos and I love your reactions and positiveness! This looks like a fantastic experience to hire a canal boat 👍💫🌟
Ive never checked my weed hatch in 8 years, maybe thats why she only moves at 2mph
Great video, the cafe in a bus sounds great, my barber uses a coach for his business.
Awesome Awesome video GLOVESTRAINS keep it up with your great videos you bo girl I love watching your videos
Thanks 👍
Can you ever have too many strings to your bow? Hopefully we will find out in the future 😎
Power to the G 👍
I like it, thanks haha
What a lovely video 👍🏼 looks like a great way to spend a day ⛴️
Hi G, So glad you enjoyed your day on t' narrowboat (as did I); but what is it with you 'n Geese - and this time, with ducks, a swan and a Heron too? What a 'Bird Whisperer' you're becoming eh?!).
A great vlog as usual - and getting even better still, and you uplift my spirits as usual - BUT...
I'm glad you 'fessed up to wanting your own boat one day; for a 'free spirit' like y'self, I'd advise against it. It'd restrict where you can get to. Then there's mooring fees etc. FAR better to hire a narrowboat in any part of the country you decide to visit at any given point in time I reckon. A good mate o' mine bought a new narrowboat locally (Bucks. for the Grand Union canal; he gets about on it okay, but wot a faff!). Happy future Cruising G. - Pete J. x
Haha I like birds 😂 thanks Pete, I know there's a lot of costs involved but there's a lot of upsides too 😁
I've often thought about doing this! Lovely stuff!
If you plan on doing this again on the Shropshire Union Canal Llangollen Branch, I'm sometimes near the Chirk area and could get some footage (including aerials) of you around there, and on the Chirk aqueduct. It's quite something!!
That’s a bit of canal I’d love to go on - we hired a canal boat near the Anderton boat lift and we got as far as Wrenbury last summer - maybe next time!
Awesome video G Love Trains
Thanks James!
Well done. From twin rails to gorgeous water babe. Ni e vlog
The path beside the canal would be a good place for a bike ride video 😉
Cool
Nice
A very good evening young lady how are you today in the hot weather today hun xx 😘
Hello captain G very fine ship you have even fitted with luxury (toilet😂)fantastic sailing looks like a wonderful trip ❤❤❤❤
Haha thanks Stuart! 😂
That’s absolutely brilliant G 😁 great to see you driving them canal boats! Also #GLovesBoats 😜
GLovesMovement
Haha I second it!
brilliant video g.i constantly hire boats myself, just done 2 weeks on the lancaster canal.you look such a natural.you,ve picked it up so quick.i love it.
Oh that sounds great!
just seen one of your other videos.walking at bamfurlong bridge, live 100 yards away.keep it up great stuff
Did you have a boating companion on this trip 😎
My grandad used to have a canal boat
Great video, little surprised to see you on a boat
Terrific, laid back, chill video :)
Thankyouu
I've often thought that would be a nice way to do a UK holiday. Spending a month on the canals going from place to place to explore.
It sure would!
I like that the canal boats are named after diesel engine manufacturers. 😀
Are they haha
@@GLovesTrains Ruston was also known for industrial shunters.
Brilliant video G, driving a canal boat looks like a lot of fun, I'd love to try it out one day. :)
Great video, Loving the Content as always G. Look forward to the next video X
Thanks!!
Oh that's it. You're gone. Next you'll be doing your hols train spotting from a narrowboat and that will lead to buying one and fixing it up so you can become a full time cranker on the cut. As any sane person would say, "and why the hell not!" Great vid G. Cheers
Bahaha thanks Greg!
I've got one booked for this week. I've been waiting for a chance to do this and i can't wait. Watching your video has made me even more impatient. Great video.
Ah its an amazing experience!
We need a glovescanals spin off channel!
This channel gets better and better.
Ex pilkingtons Olympian
Fantastic again loved the bus cafe 👍🏻👍🏻🍺🍺🍺🥮🍿🍩🍦🍦
Thanks June! 🍐🥪🥞🍇
It's great that you've crossed something off your bucket list G. There appears to be no limit to your skills on what you can successfully vlog about. No ducks were harmed during the making of this vlog (hopefully).
Certainly not, thanks driver Ethel
Well done steering the oat
I feel this was almost inevitable. :D Next up, GMovesontoanarrowboat.
Hahaha! 😂
Great video G. Looks like a great day too. Yes the bus was a Leyland olympian.
Oooo nice! Thanks Lord Grumpy!
G Loves Canal Boats !
I really enjoyed watching that, and you made it look so easy
Presumably your instructor understands physics (unlike your driving instructor at Roundabout Central)
Bahaha!! Oh my days what was I saying back then 😂
Looks like you had fun G.
What song did you use?
When a thumbs up "like" seems lacking of expression, so,,,,⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ fun to see this feature of your area and you at the helm. Boat is proportionally like a tiny private rail car that floats.
Aww thanks!! 😄
@@GLovesTrains Yeah, Amazon influenced.
Three boats all named after engines?
A wide point in a canal where you can turn a boat round is known as a winding hole, pronounced as in the thing that blows, not as in winding up a clock.
Haha cheers!
G loves Canal Boats. :)
