242. Crossing The Wash by narrowboat - narrowboats at sea!

- On May 29th this year, I was lucky enough to be invited to join Alan, Tina and Richard of NB Wobbly, to travel in convoy across The Wash with Jo, Michael and Lorna on NB Perseverance. This is quite an adventurous crossing for a narrowboat as they're designed only for the flat calm waters of the canals or small rivers - and The Wash is pretty much open sea.

That pause with the faintest of smirking on your face was priceless....
Haha.it was the highlight for me.
Made me laugh out loud. My wife thinks I'm an idiot 😂
David, that remark and pause about the dogs playing was brilliant. I'm still chuckling now. Thanks for sharing and best wishes. Col.
"but things can change, and when it goes wrong it goes wrong fast" reassuring words from any pilot at the start of a journey 😂
I've heard that phrase several times in my world!
In 1988, I crewed a narrowboat from the Netherlands to Teddington lock. A totally hair-raising journey which took a week. We actually crossed the North Sea at night! Crossed shipping lanes dodging supertankers, container ships and ferries. It's a tale most would not believe, but it's completely true.
Yikes
Yeah yeah, course you did.....
@@fromthedeskoftimlovell7920 why would he make that up ? He has nothing to gain by doing so except to look foolish if it wasnt true, so im going to say yes its true.
Mike- you video'd it of course.
That would draw my arse up a bit too.
18:22 _"....& played with their balls.."_
The look on your face immediately after you'd said it.... hilarious, so pleased you kept that in.
Boston to Denver by sea. Such an odd thought for an American....
There are a lot of places in the US named after English places.
That’s no tea party 😂
Also odd thoughts to go from Wetwang to Shitterton or to North Piddle (honest to god names in UK)

Quite the interesting Life Style. Retired U.S. Coast Guard, Aviation of course. Before the Coast Guard I spent 3 years in the Gulf of Mexico, Oilfield trash, helped me appreciate the Coast Guard Aviation. I am amazed at the lock system and how it's been working with Low Tech for hundreds of years, hats off to you Brits, job well done. Semper Paratus.
Why.. would anybody dislike this blissful Sunday viewing?!
Couldn't agree more
There’s bound to be a few folks with fat fingers who ‘missed!’

I don't think they have a reason, Haters hate, it's what they do. Best just to ignore them and enjoy yourself.

"The sun was out and the dogs played with their balls." Brief pause and sidelong glance. "We're now off again." Ha! What fun.
As long as the dogs weren't licking them 😆!
@@MrTumbleweed22 dogs usually love to chew balls like crazy, sound slightly painful😬🤪
On god, I was a half second away from typing out the same thing, lolol
Hey I'm in Boston usa
The first (and hopefully only) time I had to bleed a marine diesel was on a small sailboat near Port Townsend. There was no wind, so I had to drop anchor and row the tender into town to purchase fuel. After which it took me the better part of four hours and multiple phone calls to the local marine shop before I was able to get the engine bled correctly and able to start up again.
Which is a rather lengthy way of saying I'm extremely impressed by the Wobbly Boat captain managing to get the entire operation done that quickly. Kudos!
This is the first time a narrowboat video has made me feel seasick!
Well, that video had it all - excitement, beaching, dogs on the beach, drone views, bobbing in the waves, speeding on the tides & emergency repairs. Cool pilot, too. Thanks!
I have nothing common with narrow boats, England, sea, ocean, canals, darn, I can barely swim. But I feel this thrill watching you entering the open sea!
As an ex commercial fisherman on the west coast of Canada I certainly know that the excitement of transiting through boiling narrow passages that plow you sideways without warning and the near frantic wheel cranking in order to get back on track. A bump on the bank like that is nothing to be embarrassed about given the maneuverability of a narrow boat. Great video as always.
This man not only is a great entertainer but his english is soooo pleasant to listen at! The outcome is that also ppl who are not mother-tongue english kann full enjoy his adventures. Much love from Italy to you all!!
I was not expecting to be so immensely unsettled by the sight of narrow boats in wide open water
Right? Seeing waves coming over the bow of that little canal boat gave me massive anxiety.
A triumph of adventuring and expert filmmaking as well!
Well done and bravo, David!
Man, I so loved this one.
Bbc documentary level : achieved.
Thank you :-)
Concur. It was spectacular...drone footage included!
Haha! You are like the Jeremy Clarkson of Narrow Boating! "With engines throbbing, We embarked on the most challenging journey........... In the World!" :D
Narrow boats on open water, deliberately grounding them, marine mammals, doggos, what an adventure! Thanks for letting us share in it!
Glad you enjoyed it
I watched Minimal List video first. It was really nice seeing the trip from both perspectives.
Watching your channel Dave, makes me wish we upkept the canals here in New England where they have all gone to pot.
Another outstanding cinematographic vlog. Beautifully filmed and beautifully narrated. Thank you David 👏👏👍😀
I have to say it's not often I find 3-foot waves exciting. Good job.
And the puttering of the museum-grade engine was oddly comforting.
My grandfather once told me that he took a narrow boat across the channel for a day trip and back again. I took it all with a pinch of salt because he always had such wild stories to tell us. However the worrying thing is that they often proved to be true.
Just after 18:15, that subtle pause to think "phrasing?" to yourself had me in stitches.
Thanks for the link, I was watching a 2x speed so missed the pause and therefore the humour!
Nice to see you posting again! Nice episode
Thank you. More to come (eventually!)
@@CruisingTheCut it's very entertaining as well.
I’m an American and I’m in love with British narrow boats. I almost want to say goodbye to Texas, move to the UK and buy myself a narrow boat to retire on. Maybe someday.
You will be more tham welcome. regards
I feel the same, tried to get my way to do that after we rented a narrowboat in 2005 for a week in England, the best vacation ever, and the best way to see two-thirds of England in the comfort of a luxurious liveaboard.
What stops you? I would love to live on one but I would prefer a much wider one than the standard narrowboats, I used to build them in the early to mid 1980's, sadly I have never been on one outside of the workshop that I worked in when building them.
@@redlioness6627. Then you would know about widebeam boats.
On a narrow boat there are 365 days in a year. Five of those days you would wish you had never seen a narrowboat , Three hundred and sixty of those days…..Heaven!!
"The dogs playing with their balls" brought hoots of laughter .. .. ..
It is so good to hear your storytelling prose again, David. I always enjoy your adventures with Perseverance. Cheers to the whole crew!!
that look on your face when you said and the dogs enjoyed playing with their balls was priceless lol
I almost spit my coffee out when he said that!.....lolol
@@irongoatrocky2343 I was marking the commencement of evening here (near Canal du Midi) by having a G+T. I almost drowned in it when I heard that comment. :-) Coulld it be that David was teasing his followers?
Those sandbanks and all the seals loitering upon them - must have been a welcome sight to weary travelers across the centuries.
Another fun one, Mr Dave;) Being a Californian yank, the fact that you so often pass buildings from the 14th century really puts things into perspective. Forever enjoyable... Thanks
Same case for me. But even younger buildings in Australia. Oldest ones are still younger than the United States (post independence).
A friend of mine who's the vicar at a local church enjoys telling American visitors that his tower, built by Christopher Wren, is older than their country.
This is of the highest quality, could be a proper TV documentary. Brilliant.
Incredible video! This is *so* well thought-out and put together, and the presentation was easily as good, if not better, than a commercial channel. The cross-over with Minimal List is like seeing two of your favourite soap operas with a shared plot line. Love it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice and professionally assembled piece, particularly lifted by the drone footage of the deserted "beach," really enjoyed it. But, you're a braver man than me to set out to sea in a narrow boat !
The algorithm got me here. Nice but a bit scary video. Greetings from Germany.
Thank you
It is magical to see those boats at the beach. Thank You.
I think your all just a tad crazy!!!!🙄😂
You had me cringing. I promise when the Wobbly was rocking in circles out there in the waves...glad to didnt keep the camera there to long...felt like I was on the boat...🙄🤪!
Great video David...thnx so much for the exciting afternoon...Happy your all safe...the dogs loved it...and thanks for letting us see Snubby...😊❤
Thank you! It was a fun trip, even in the wobbly bits
Great journey. Wise to have a pilot. The pilot being very good at telling why you need a pilot. Doing something out of the ordinary - you need all the help you can be getting - living to tell the tale is a nice option...
Smashing video. And by smashing I mean the American form as in "you really smashed them reeds good!".
Oh my gosh! I was so nervous for you guys while you were out on the open water when it was so choppy! Looks like you had a really great adventure. I really enjoyed the drone footage over the sand bank. Thank you (and your friends) for sharing this wonderfully exciting trip.
Thank you
I've watched this before - love it. "So we just head over to the other river, yeah?", "No, we head out to sea to avoid the sandbanks", "Okay, so we need to avoid sandbanks", "Of course. Except for the one we're going to ram and beach ourselves on."
🤣

"We've gone from Boston to Norfolk and are now on a route to Denver"
*Confused American noises*
You can blame your forebearers' regrettable lack of creativity :P
It's Athens, Georgia which always gets me. "You're what? You're going to drive to Athens? Have they made a bridge over the Atlantic or something? Oh, right!" XD
There’s a Lincoln up the road from Boston. Even a small village called New York.
I'm a cruiser boater, 10m with twin diesels. I must say I've never seen your channel b/4 but I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. You make very good videos and elocute most clearly. I liked the trip from the start as Micheal explained it and you captured the whole show. It's always interesting to see other locations that we/I in the US may very well never visit @ 78 y/o. I liked and subbed and hope to see more of your work.
Thank you
You're all nuts....and I love it, thanks!
I watch all 4 vlogs one after the other. It's a full-length movie. "Ground Hogs Day on Narrow Boat". My wife and I enjoyed your adventure very much, thank you.
10:30 ”It’s all rather exciting but we’re having bacon sandwiches so that’s OK” 😁😁😂😂 how very 🇬🇧
It's great to see you back on the water. I've missed these videos. Take care.
Having grown up around the outskirts of Boston, I have crossed those bridges hundreds of times but never been Boston from the river, I'm now fortunate enough to live in kings Lynn and love the water there, thank you for publishing this video! It was really interesting and il be sharing it with my family who are equally lovers of boats,
Madness. Can't believe they're allowed out. Although it has to be said, they definitely knew what they're doing. Good thing it stayed calm.
Living near kings Lynn, this is the first I knew that narrow boats can cross the wash. Thankfully you had a calm crossing. I've been out there on a kayak and I know how rough it can get. Great video Cheers.
That was a proper adventure! Thanks for taking us all along!
Glad you enjoyed it
"an almost imperceptible motion for the last twenty minutes or so", which is basically all your videos. Love it.
Hahaha true
I enjoyed the sound of that motor. The put put...put put... brings back good memories of old John Deere tractors.
Very glad to see you out on the water again, David. I've heard about the Wash of course but it was nice to see it up close and personal.
Cheers from Canada
that was different. Very good.
Excellent the dogs enjoyed playing with their balls, and even better the straight face maintained until the camera was off.
Excellent. Almost made me seasick while sitting at my desk.
As a sailor accustomed to having a deep keel under me, this would be a fine and easy jaunt. Being in a narrowboat with a flat bottom, I'd be chewing my fingernails all the way. Well done staying calm!
Many narrow boats have crossed the channel. One has crossed the Atlantic.
The Wash is a very common crossing for river boats and narrow boats. More exciting than the canal but not that high a risk if done properly.
"That once appear in a narrowboat video i made about toilets", that's life goals right there lol
Impressive and memorable stuff, David! There's no forgetting you were a professional broadcaster - the narration and filming here is just perfect. As good as anything on tv! Entertaining, interesting, educational, exciting, beautiful to watch and some very nice human touches. I especially like the drone filming on the sandbanks. Thanks for this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Agreed. Very high standard.
What a thoroughly exhilarating journey. Please ignore the negative comments. Yes, this might be a bit of a risk but the water is very shallow, you all have life jackets, and you have an experienced pilot which will cover your insurance. Soo good on you! I wouldn’t do it myself but it was interesting to see and it shows how much Narrowboats can put up with. So well done!
Glad you all made it safe and sound folks... Godspeed and safe travels...
Did the trip get everyone's 'seal' of approval., ha ha.
I wouldn’t “bank” on it
I thought "Navy Seals" was funnier. :o)
While on the beach, no doubt. "The time has come, the Walrus said, to talk of many things..."
What an absolute brilliant video, I only wish it had gone on longer.
Never even imagined that a narrow boat could be taking out to sea.
Must have been scarey when the wind picked up.
Scenery is brilliant. 👍👍👍
What a great episode; thank you for your hard work putting this together.
Glad you enjoyed it!
If your new approach to vlogging produces this level of storytelling, then take as much time as you need to produce them. Really spectacular! Makes me want to go reread Melville and Conrad and Patrick O'Brian. The drone segment was especially lovely -- and shocking to see a narrowboat hauled up on a remote beach. Maybe it was time for you to get out of Hobbiton and have some adventures.
This video showed up on my list a couple of weeks ago, so I watched it out of curiosity - with no prior interest or specific knowledge in narrowboating, and now I am getting quite addicted to this channel! Thank you for all these fascinating videos, the fantastic commentary and your insight into narrowboating. What comes through is just how important skill, patience and learning from (and gaining) experience are for this activity. I'll stop writing and go back to binge-watching this channel. :)
Thank you!
@@CruisingTheCut Could you do an update/overview of the current drought situation and how it’s impacting the waterways ?
Wonderful! Probably your best ever video - which is saying something! Utter madness though. Flat bottom boats with tiny (very old) engines, with almost no power, AT SEA! What could possibly go wrong?? We are all very happy that (almost) nothing did! But imagine the engine failing in that rough bit... And the bit on the sand bank was as surreal as it was unexpected. A totally riveting and enjoyable video - many thanks.
Glad you liked it! Cheers
A short history of NB Wobbly would be an interesting addition to this video. It seems to be an "older" boat or at least old-fashioned. You may have already covered this in your earlier video but I've forgotten.
“Sierra Cosworth car park doughnuts” 😂😂😂 love it. Yet another superb video to add to your collection, David. I’ve watched the whole lot through twice thus far…think I might go for a third time; the kettle just boiled and it’s raining outside. The perfect afternoon accompaniment!
You did more carpark doughnuts than I have ever done in my Cosworth, I've had one for the last 30 years, I've enjoyed the ride!
Impressive video. It makes me think of Dutch flat-bottomed ships that sail the rivers and shallow waters of the Wadden sea and IJsselmeer. Like the narrowboats they used to carry cargo and are now used for recreational purposes. They also beach them on sandbanks in the Wadden sea at low tide.
... feeling very green around the 13 minute mark ... beautiful work with the drone too ...
Quite a little adventure. Thsnks for letting us. Watch.
That took a lot of courage and seamanship to make it across in a narrowboat! Well done!
Imagine my surprise as, when I was browsing my Amazon Prime movie lists, and saw "Cruising the Cut" !
Dutch guy with a seaworthy boat here. I am glad you made it. If the weather had deteriorated only a wee bit you might have been in trouble.
Cheers, yes that’s why we had a close eye on the forecast before setting off.
These boats are so facinating. Being from the middle of America I'm surrounded by the great lakes. But there is nothing like this around. Would love to live aboard something like that.
It's a shame more of our Canals weren't maintained. I'm on the east coast near the Raritan river, the old Delaware and Raritan Canal crosses NJ to the PA border, having been a route from the coal fields to New York Harbor via the Arthur Kill. Sadly it's locks have all been turned to dams and two large portions of it paved over for highways. I've biked the old mule path along side it a few times but it'd be something to be able to experience it on a boat like this.
The closest we have is the C&O canal along the Potomac River. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesapeake_and_Ohio_Canal
Go to England and rent a narrow boat someday. Great fun. Hello from Southern California.
Boston was my home town. Granny used to live by the moorings where you set out from and her father was the Chief River Pilot for the Port of Boston. I have his brass house plaque and his marine barometer on my wall here at home. His father ran a passenger ferry across the Haven before there were bridges. I've been out into the Wash many times on boats - we call it going "Down Below". You were brave to attempt that trip in a narrowboat - wind and tide and the sandbanks conspire to make that a tricky piece of water - but good to see the town and the Wash again. Boston "Stump" is so called because it was supposed to have a spire, but never had one. It's the largest parish church in England and was built on the profits from the wool trade with the Low Countries in the Middle Ages. At that time, Boston was one of the biggest ports in England.
Beautiful drone shots. Really appreciate the camera work on this one.
Brilliant, well done all, great photography.
Narrow boats can be made semi-seaworthy mainly by rigging the bow to shed water in the event that a wave breaks over it, then stow gear securely and low in the boat to improve stability, and a bit towards the rear to keep the bow up pretty high; and you should be good. Rigging the bow to shed waves is the main thing.
I noticed that his front door appears to be largely glass. A big wave can break glass, which is why they board up windows before hurricanes. A bit of plywood to protect that glass would increase his safety margin.
I had seen the planning video that Jo and Michael did on their you Tube Channel and I knew that you were going to be with Tina and Richard of Wobbly Boater. I really enjoyed watching the crossing of the Wash from Boston to Denver. Thank you very much for making this video. Your video expertise was great as usual.
Thank you
Wow you never realise how out of place narrowboats look on open water! Love the video! Great work as always!
The images from the drone of the beached narrow boats were really memorable. Well done on your adventure.
A very exciting adventure for sure...we had so much fun!
This was my dream to live like this , I was going to move to England. But I got married. Have a family now . I so happy you have video s I can watch. I forgot to introduce myself my name is DON from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦. Nice to meet you sir.
Hello!
That was just what I needed today. Brilliant to watch it all. Thank you!
Quite a change from the normal narrow-boating!
Indeed
That's a nice little beach .I love these boats. It's nice to see a keen following of something that is an integral part of people's heritage I love that something so special is being enjoyed And preserved
Perfect vlog for a Sunday morning, loved the drone footage too. Very uplifting, great job!
I know I’m not the first to mention the dogs playing with their balls… but I want to say thanks for keeping it in the video… your take to the camera after was spot on.
Old seaman here, you have got some balls yourself, putting out to sea in a steel bathtub with a mere 18 hp. I have seen two of those crossing the channel once.... Crazy people.
Love the Volvo Ocean race cap!
You have a very relaxing voice; this is a great channel to listen to when anxious or winding down for the night. keep up the good work.
What a cracking good adventure of just the right sort. Captain Pugwash and Scruffy would be most impressed. In all my years of boating I have never considered the use of ramming speed as a deliberate aid to navigation technique! Brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
slightly hungover from birthday drinking...and joy of joys a new Cruising the cut vid. Most enjoyable what an adventure
David, being a Saltwater Sailor again, will maybe rekindle the urge to return to the cruising the canals. This past year being so restrictive, the world has missed your vLogs. Me, I just missed the cheese. Think of a journey through the canals seeking out and cataloging the many offering of different cheeses that could be found in the UK. SAY CHEESE!
Wow wow wow - the boats on the sandbanks and the seals were fabulous! Thanks for filming this 😊😊
Wow I didn't know you could go on the wash with a narrow boat! Living on the edge!!
