Very underrated player one of the best striker's to play in the Prem
'One of the' used very loosely
@@tweedlio2763he was up there with the likes of Fowler, so yes he absolutely was. Wrighty was doing bits, he started so late in football as well
@@DustyFC 'one of the best prem strikers' , simply No!
Aguero, Shearer, Drogba, Rooney, Ruud, Owen, Van Persie, Henry, Bergkamp, Suarez, kane .....All levels above him
@@tweedlio2763 Congratulations son, you know how to use Wikipedia.
@@burnaardnufc3173 Not really, born in '83 and a decent memory helps. As you're a NUFC you could argue Beardsley, Cole, Ferdinand and Asprilla were better?
Di Canio, Le Tiss, Zola, Cantona are others. I could go on.
Please don't assume that everyone relies on wikipedia, some of us actually remember.
You got us to France 98 Wrighty. Never forget that night in Italy. Party party
Thing is you had
Owen
Cole
Sheringham
Fowler
Wright
Shearer
Even players like Ferdinand, Dublin etc all at once
Hardly, a couple of goals against Moldova isn't exactly getting us to the world cup in 98.

That was Gascoigne in Italy.

Ian Wright was a phenomenal finisher. He definitely was good enough
The problem may have been the time. During the 90s England had shearer, Micheal Owen, Robbie fowler, Teddy sherigham, Andy Cole, Heskey, Stan Collymore (only had three caps himself).
He was better than All of them except shearer and possibly Andy Cole
@@leebee5246 I mean Owen won world player of the year. My point is there were lots of top strikers
Agreed there were alot of good strikers at the time but Heskey/Owen were abit towards the 2000's & Heskey is no competition to Ian Wright.
@@HC-kn2sq he did but the top of his game was short lived. Wright was class for his whole career. The other lad made a good point, their careers ended and started around the same time
Im a Spurs supporter and that doesn’t stop me appreciating just how good Ian Wright was. He definitely deserved to go to major International Tournaments. He was one of the best. He played at the same time as Lineker and Shearer but he was at that same level. Incredible striker and with great character. He used to get noise from Spurs supporters but would joke back at the crowd and not take it seriously. He deserved more.
Deserved more credit* He deserved to go to the Tournaments and to have arguably been a starter at some of them.
Jeez they did that man dirty
Not how I remember it.
Against most big teams (not all, but most), he struggled and was routinely given a 5 out of 10 rating.
Also, to say he was on Linekers or Shearers level is just plain stupid.
Yes he was good. Not saying he was not.
But against the world's best he is not.
Just like Andy Cole was good in the league
Just like Les Ferdinand was good in the league
Even Fowler was a beast in the league.
But for England against the world's best they struggled.
So never mind
@@craiggibbons8228you could say that about every England player in the last 50 years, England have always struggled in tournaments after immense hype, but the other ‘big’ teams usually put them to bed
@@craiggibbons8228 how can you say wright struggled for england, if he never played for them in a major tournament and he was pretty good on most other games for england.
I agree that he wasn't at the level of shearer or lineker but he didn't even get the chance for england
Disgraceful really they done that to him. Im a spurs fan but i dont care , ian wright was one of my favourite strikers in his prime, what a finisher. Imagine if arsenal had him up top now !!
Games a lot more technical now can't see him being better than Jesus
He would be better than Gabriel Jesus as he had technique AND his finishing was on a different level to that of Gabriel Jesus.

I just cried my eyes out the connection people have with uncle Ian is a testament to the human Ian is, I truly love and respect this man and pray I can have the pleasure of been in the same room as him one day what a man
Thats deed .
I was born in 1985. When I think of the top strikers when I was a kid he was at the very top.
I was born in 1985 too!
My first game I watched was in 1992. West Ham v Millwall (I'm a Millwall supporter)....
Such a genuine human. Wishing him many more years of health and happiness
One of the best finishers who graced the prem and a top top bloke.
That’s mad as well cause all I’ve ever heard of Ian weight is that he’s a legend. Pitty that this is how he feels, but he’s respected massively in Ireland.
I'm Irish and I remember watching him play for England and never seen him play great for them
He was definitely good enough! One of the best todo it 🙏🏻 we love you Wrighty
Absolutely love the guy and it’s unbelievable he never got to play. The man was a game changer for sure.
Should have been on the england bus whenever he was fit. Quality player.
Wrighty, mate you were definitely good enough. Sport is a funny one, politics and contradictions are always involved in one way or another. I missed representing my region for one year due to the coaches son being selected in my position. You are a legend mate and definitely had the talent to do anything.
He was never given a chance. Managers had their favourites and stayed with them. Such a shame. 😢
Take nothing away from Ted. He was the perfect man to partner Shearer.
Ian Wright was England's best striker in his prime could beat a man was amazing finisher guy had it all
Come on now. Let’s be real, Shearer, Owen, Fowler, Cole and even Le Tissier were better than Wrighty. He was unfortunate to be born into an era of top strikers.
He was definitely good enough, Ian wright and shearer would have been a great combo
Too similar

Unbelievable oversight from England coaches. What a player he could have been for us. Was scoring 20+ goals a season and his goals to starts ratio for England is better than 1 in every 2... Which is pretty damn impressive!
Absolute travesty he didn’t get more caps.
I remember watching him play for England a few times and he never really performed
Lineker, shearer, Fowler, Owen, sheringham, Andy cole, Les Ferdinand , collymore.
Sadly it often comes down to the manager's personal preference; Kevin Phillips won the golden boot (scored 36 goals) and never got a shout.
Ian Wright, love him, proper kid from the streets,, respect,, what a player,👍EFC
Won the golden boot in 92 & didn’t get picked 😂😂😂
Good lad Graham Taylor 🤦♂️
Similar situation with Darren Bent being the highest English goalscorer in the prem for Charlton in 06 when he was overlooked for a 16 year Theo Walcott 😑
Keanes face tellz u its facts😅
This is what I was thinking.....
If you look at some of the strikers England had in the 90’s who never really got a look it’s insane. Ferdinand, Cole and Fowler all got less caps than Wright, then you had players who had periods of form like Collymore, Sutton and Dublin who don’t even have 10 caps between them.
No they always picked Sheringham over Wright, Cole and Le Tissier who were superior players. Pure favoritism
1990 world cup steve bull played....he was at division 2 wolves at the time....just saying
That’s a big miss for all us fans Wrighty, your energy and passion in a world or European cup tournament would have been off the charts . You’ll always be In our hearts . YNWA BRO !!!
Cole, Fowler, Wright. All of them should have had more caps to their names. England had some pretty awesome center forwards in the mid to late 90s.
dont forget kind of racism on Cole and Wright. But also ,jealousy between Footballers too in general
@@KmT81 I just think there were loads of great English strikers. Shearer, Ferdinand, Fowler, Cole, Wright, Sheringham and Beardsley even Le Tissier. You could take any two of those and you’d have a formidable strike partnership.
I think ian was vastly underrated. Great goal scorer never guy up his commitment was unbelievable. He really did not have any luck with England and makes it so sad as he is proud of England. Before you ask I’m spurs but hats of to ian top man and a wonderful pundit
The fact he thinks he wasn’t good enough is just madness. You were more than good enough.
We played 442 formation and had about 5-6 top strikers . Problem was finding a striker pair to complement each other. Hence we had lineker/ Beardsley or shearer/ sheringham or Owen/ heskey. Wrighty was too similar to Cole/Fowler/Owen/shearer
Well why didnt he play then? .Overratef
Don't worry Wrighty you were an amazing talent and you played the game with a smile on your face. I loved the way you celebrated goals with such passion. You are an example to young players mate.
He missed out on everything and was possibly the best, he really was outstanding. So pleased he got his golden boat and other things back
Despite his hardships and grievances, he was never too bitter, probably one of the most likable human beings right now.
How do you win a golden boot and not make it onto the national team.
He looked to black with that white jersey .. couldn't represent England and outshine the whites.😢😮
Same way maguire still makes it
That also happened with Chris Sutton although he had the B team situation as well
Racism
Wrighty was just unfortunate. Unfortunate with that injury when he finally got his chance and unfortunate to be playing during the reign of Graham Taylor. That was such a horrible time to be an England fan.
England managers are just inept. Right now, Southgate plays overly defensive football despite all the attacking talent on offer and selecting players who dont feature in their club teams or out of form as some weird loyaty thing.
Can't to see Jude rolled out as a double pivot in the euros!
Their FA is the reason why, they make so many bad decisions
💯 England isn't winning anything with him there.
@@Serge-cm5myBesides Alf Ramsay, Southgate is the best manager we've had. It's not his fault people like you expect England to walk every tournament even though we haven't won anything, or been in contention, since 1966
That’s how you need to be to win a tournament. It’s not about beating every other team. It’s about being difficult to beat & being boring.
Argentina proved that. Italy have been doing it for 150 years.
You’re acting like England are 1970s Brazil. Those days are long gone. If you go into a knockout tournament trying to win every game 5-0 and attack like club football; you’ll be going out first round more often than not.
Southgate is boring, and he is defensive. Nobody disagrees; but that’s how you win tournaments. Keep in mind they lost the euros via penalty shootout. They were literally one kick away from winning it and then you’d be classing him as the 2nd best manager England ever had. You’re the dictionary definition of a football fan.

England had too many options up front. I remember him not performing when he did get a game
Oh give up. Even if he had raised it with justification, you would have claimed it never existed
In the 90s? It could have been a factor though I personally don't think it was that. Black people weren't really seen as British till the 00s. I grew up in the 90s, Black people being 2nd class citizens was the norm back then. The only thing I'll give Tony Blair credit for is he got rid of the "Us Vs them" mentality in this Country and really only the Boomers still have it but that's because they lived so long with being allowed to be openly racist. The majority of the time, Black and Asian people are right with the 'race card' it's just people don't want to hear it rather than them actually disagreeing with it
It probably was still a race thing. Something I've noticed is that British racism isn't as hateful as American or Italian racism. It's exclusionary.
@@Danny_SE11very true. It's mostly people who have never experienced true racism that don't realise just how "under the radar" something like this could be. Hell you as the victim might not even notice it until way later.
People always cry racism, but this is one of those cases where England was racist.
Andy Cole got some nonsense too
Plenty of black players in the squads over the years. You sad 🤡
I don't buy that. The pressure to win is too high to not want to pick your best team. 90s had a lot of good strikers and a lot of odd decisions. Even Carlton Palmer got a game, despite being black and despite being useless. And as a public, we generally took Wright into our hearts. He even had a really bad talk show for a bit. Not many footballers get that.
Na, black culture was being celebrated even back then. We just had really poor decision makers in the FA and England set up. Always have. Just look at our current manager, Gareth Wokegate. Clueless. I can't remember the last time I watched an England game.
Absolute bollocks.
Wright was unlucky, that's all.
Well, he became a legendary player regardless. His records and contributions will not be forgotten as they are a part of history. Not many can say that.
When I was a kid I asked my dad why wrighty wasn't playing for England. His answer....'racism'

England managers are generally useless when it comes to picking players. The whole back five of Arsenal should have been staples in the England team (though I'd keep Pearce as left back) In 92 Wright should have went at least over Smith (his strike partner) as he statistically done better. In 96, Wright should have gone instead of Ferdinand, and Keown should have gone instead of Southgate or Howey (

A disgrace that you didn't 😢
Ian Wright was the most exciting striker to watch back in the late 80's early 90's he scored all sorts of goals, volleys, headers, overhead kicks, and was a very good finisher 1on1 with the keeper. Oh he had fantastic pace also. But they kept licking shearers bollox. Yes shearer was very good but no pace and had everything ball into his feet or head. Boring af England were after 96 without a secondary striker like Owen, even fowler didn't get a proper opportunity damn we had some sick strikers them days.
