After parte 1… this is a MUST! Fantastic vision and presentation of the most amazing lens Leica made - 8 element 35mm with googles. Sadly I will never be able to use it in my iiif… but I already love the f2 50mm Summitar look… it also gives a wonderful rendition that is a bit better than reality… like a painting…
This is the so far the best Leica 8-element talking on the youtube. I could feel the deep love and passion even from the other side of the screen. LIKED and SUBSCRIBED!!
A beautiful video, Steven, the best I've seen. Not only informative, but passionate. I'm convinced I must get myself an M3 with this lens. I've noted that the images in your other videos and on your Flickr site are superb, but I have to say that images here from this lens are unique. Thank you for making this video. And don't worry about your English, it's beautiful!
I really enjoy your videos, you have a calmness about you that’s very easy to listen to. Thanks to your video my 1960 8 element arrived today so I guess it’s noodles for dinner for a while :). Thank you.
I really enjoyed this video and your photographs. Indeed, both the M3 and 35mm Summicron v1 are special pieces of Leica history. Thank you--I look forward to seeing more videos.
Great video, thank you for sharing it! It is truly a magnificent lens from the glorious era of Leica! Nobody makes lenses like that any more. I suppose it would be too expensive nowadays.
Curious if you have used the Light Lens Lab 35mm f2, which attempts to replicate the Leica 8 element. I have found it to be quite magical. The flare is a little different but it does use flint glass and wide open you get a excellent glow, as well as the highlights do seem to be retained even with overexposure. It'd be interesting to see your perspective on this.
I have bought the 35 mm Summilux Pre-ASPH after viewing your video. I am now looking for the 35 mm f/2.8 Summaron and this 5 mm Summicron for both my M and SL2. Much appreciated.
Steven : I do not know how , the Canon L39 stack up against these , I love the 50mm DR F2 , the best , then the 35mm 1.4 for the glow of the skin , but yes this F2 8 element is delicious. I only have one Leica lens now the Asph / Apo 90mm F2 Summicron , and I treasure that lens , yes it is 6 bit in black. I love my 90 AP / ASPH
Steven, Kimura Ihei was indeed a Leica photographer. I discovered his work online about 2 years ago. However so much of his work remains out of print. He visited a particular japanese province more than 20 times. Maybe it was Akita. I am not sure. He might have well used the lens since many of his images seem to be taken with a 35mm.
There was an exhibition of his photography in Tokyo 2 years ago, and it was a color negative film he shot in Paris. I am amazed that he may was using 8-elements lens at that time, because the colors are so similar.
Love your videos, keep it up. I am a Leica shooter already, but after seeing this video, love the M3 and goggles version, I bought myself the exact set up. Do you use filter to protect the front element?
it is great video. am also new in Leica World. I'll make a video of my shots with my M6 camera. thanks for great video. and your English is great. I understand everything you said.
summicron 35 v1 is great. But today it is very hard to find one with good quality. And the price goes crazy. So unless you are a collector, a new modern summicron is more practical. When I was in Tokyo, Leica Ginza refused to CLA my summicron 35 v1, they don't do services for old M also.
thank you for your video. a quick question if you may - if I have the lens and i will remove the googles, can it be used on a modern Leica mp without any adjustments?
Don't buy any have mist, haze or fog lens, that will very difficult clean up. But my friend has cleaned his hazed Leica lens by some Toilet cleaner containing hydrochloric acid, maybe it will useful.
Thank you thank you for sharing your thoughts on this excellent lens. Years ago I was bitten by the Leica bug, my first serious camera was a Leica M3 with a 1.5 50 mm Summarit lens. I loved that camera but I found it very limited. Years later I borrowed a Leica M6 with a 35 F2 Sumicron and compared it with my Nikon FE with a 35 mm F2 AIS lens. When I examined the slides with 100 power microscope I could see very little difference. The only difference I can really see was that the Sumicron and had less flair. Not trying to take anything away from Leica it is a niche camera which is not mass produced like the Nikon. The lens that blew both of them away was the 55 mm F3.5 micro Nikkor the sharpness of that lens was incredible and I paid $50 for it. I also enjoyed seeing my depth of field in the SLR viewfinder which the Leica doesn’t show. But you can’t beat the Leica for being unobtrusive when doing things like street photography. However the new mirrorless cameras can now do silent photography and adapt most vintage lenses to their bodies. That’s where I find my older Nikon 1 V1 and J5 to be excellent performers in this genre. Regards Gerry

Hi Steven, I got this lens from a friend of mine, the gogle was removed. So, my question is can I use this lens with Leica M2? Thanks in advance.
The focusing of the rangefinder must be adjusted by repair guy. :)

can the goggle remove and use it in m2?
No it's not a good idea.

My 35mm Summicron with goggles is number: 1671682 Is this the 8-Element lens?
yes it is
