Steven, I really like your videos sir! I love the presentation and the commentary! It makes me smile listening to you explain & discern everything. Maybe one day I will be able to get a Leica and get some great images as you have, CHEERS!
Steven ; good to hear you this morning .... I thank you for your thoughts and excellent work , I have invested in an M3 ( 1958 ) SS Buddha Ear , from KANTO and an M A , from a seller in New Jersey , and I love them both ....but the M3 I love the best .... my M A gets jealous of her elder sister .... I think. I also shoot my F3 , yes I like that baby too.... Gosh Steven , I feel so blessed , thank you for your thoughtful photographic reviews , you shoot the life and this is beautiful ... yes .. Many shots 🫣 between are " dud's " , but then , there are treasures. I thank you for your friendship and inspiration. Christopher .
Hi Steven, i am a Leica film camera user. I see myself as a photographer not a collector and personally refuse to buy or entertain market prices for this rare lens including the KOB. I get good enough image quality from the Leica ASPH 35mm. Sometime ago, Light Lens Lab released a 8 element replica. Using the same optical formula though i am unsure if the glass quality is comparable. Seeing your video, perhaps i will consider buying this. It seems as a photographer to support rising prices of rare lenses, that goes against what i believe in. I do buy my Leica film cameras new though. I greatly appreciate your videos and opinions. As a film shooter 99% of the time, there is much i find useful in your content.
Thank you for another great and wollspoken video. I really like the dreamy and sometimes surreal look of your images! I had a foggy 35mm v2 summicron and i noticed exactly the same behaviour. It was a great lens on my M6 with film but it often did not feel right on my M240. I sold it to get a 35mm v4 summicron that works great on film and digital. Looking forward to your next video!
I’ve tested this lens against almost every other 35mm lens … the only reason I’d ever prefer another one is if I wanted to predictably squash any chance of flare and get a very contrasty photo, or if wanted overly saturated colors without editing. Well, then there’s the pre-asph Lux with it’s glorious f2.8.
I really like the dimensionality and layers the lens creates. Great video, I am looking for something like this for my M5. Ouch! that shot of your M3's shutter is a painful sight!
It will bring up the 35mm frame lines on the M6 (and M2 and M4) so no converter needed. On an M3 which has no 35mm lines the 50mm will show and you just have to guess at the wider 35mm view.
No company in this world will ever manufacture a lens like that. It would be waaay too expensive and labor intensive now. It's a true classic Leica masterpiece!
Steve, any idea how the 8-element compares in performance at equivalent apertures to the 35 Summaron ƒ/2,8? I owned the 8-element briefly about 10 years ago but it had haze that muddle its performance at ƒ/2-2.8. Sent it back to the seller. They are double the price of when I bought and completely out of reach.
Thank you again, Steven. I have a Summicron with goggles with me now. It has serial number: 1671682 of Leitz Wetzlar. Are you able to tell me if it is an eight element lens? Thanks, Kevin
I just got the Nikon Sp, and i know we both love Nikon and Leica company a lot. However, it surprises me when i have watched all your video but i feel missing about nikon Sp. Would love to see it in your collection and play beside with leica m3.
I was watching a video from the CEO of Arria Alexa the company that makes movie cameras and he said to get the film look its about gamma and not dynamic range how other companies are always talking about. Also I saw another video from another filmmaker he said the Sigma L-Mount camera color wise is on pare with a Arri Alexa. It be interesting to so if that lens would work on the Sigma L-Mount camera. Only thing that camera only has a electronic shutter so if something is moving really fast it might warp a little.
ARRI has always insisted on making digital images looks closer to film, and today it can get very close. I recently saw a British movie "Living", which was shot with a digital camera but very much like film.
sigma fp is a masterpiece that can even rival the sony venice and even come a bit close to the Arri line in terms of image quality. You are absolutely right there Sir!!
I bought it because I really wanted to use it after watching your video. Can I use it for the Leica MP body? When I attached it to the MP body, the distance meter doesn't fit. Can I use it while focusing on each page.
Thanks so much for the video, the lens is beautiful and so are your compositions!! ive been wondering which scanner / software (0:49) do you use and do you like it? im looking for another scanning method then my DSLR scan :)
I am using a Minolta Elite 5400 scanner and VueScan soft. It's good butjust a 35mm film scanner. For 120 film I am using DSLR scan. But LED light source It’s not an ideal light source. I’m still looking for a better light source method.
I have a couple of 35mm F2.8 Summarons, one with goggles for my M3, plus a Summilux F1.4 ASPH. I have to say that some of the asking prices for Leica lenses and even digitals are now bordering on absurd. Two weeks ago I looked up the price of a used Leica M8, thinking it will probably be around the £1000.00 mark. The shop is asking nearly £1400.00 for it. Absolutely bananas.
You can’t detach the goggles. (Unless you use a Dremel tool or a hacksaw, but then you’ll have other problems…) But the goggles will still work with an M6, though the view will be smaller than you’re used to.
Keep the googles, one model is removable. You get a lovely view but distorted, with goggles. some cry about heavier weight! And add A Noctilux O.95! My Summaron way better than the long gone stolen, 35mm Summicron, also had goggles!
Steven! Why scanning? I regard scanning as a digital-type intrusion into film photography. Film is for artisans. Leave scanning to the digital, selfie brigade!
Great video. Would be interesting to compare that lens with the Summilux 35 1.4 pre-asph v2 version. That old Summilux is in my eyes a beautiful tool which can create dreamy images on film, extremely well too.
Absolutely stunning and the Reala images were beautiful!
Thanks!

35/14 pre-a more comprehensive and lovely color. but 8 elenents bring more surprises.
I really like the dimensionality and layers the lens creates. Great video, I am looking for something like this for my M5. Ouch! that shot of your M3's shutter is a painful sight!
Thanks! yes that M3's disaster even ruined my finished roll.
I would like to know about the Lens Light Lab. f/2 35 mm collapsible. it comes with a converter for use with the Leica M3 or M6.
It will bring up the 35mm frame lines on the M6 (and M2 and M4) so no converter needed. On an M3 which has no 35mm lines the 50mm will show and you just have to guess at the wider 35mm view.
have you tried the LLL Chinese copy?
I haven't yet.
No company in this world will ever manufacture a lens like that. It would be waaay too expensive and labor intensive now. It's a true classic Leica masterpiece!
absolutely correct!
Light Lens Lab is actually currently manufacturing a remake of this lens. Seems to have pretty much identical rendering.
@spaqin How does it compare against the Leica?

Yes it is. Only Summicron V1 with goggles and it's a 8 elements lens.
I just got the Nikon Sp, and i know we both love Nikon and Leica company a lot. However, it surprises me when i have watched all your video but i feel missing about nikon Sp. Would love to see it in your collection and play beside with leica m3.
Yes SP is beautiful and such great ranger finder but I haven't yet.
The 35mm Summaron has that one thing, it GLOWS! Oh well, watch the prices soar!
Yes it glows when wide open.
Hi Steve, for the Reala 500D, may I ask which ISO do you use?
@@marathon7 I was uding iso200 and I also tried iso400 all be ok.

Can I use it while focusing on each page.
For MP should be a none goggles version I think, or you can take goggles off and ask someone adjust it.
Wonderful video.
May I ask, does the summilux 35mm pre-asph handle colour as well as the 35mm 8 elements?
Will
The color of the 35/14 is also beautiful but not the same as the 8E, it looks more close current lenses.
Can you recommend a specific UV/IR-Filter to protect the lens? E.g. the Leica 13131 ? I am going to use my 8-Element on a M7 and a M10r. TIA!!
I am using a 13131 Leica UV filter on 8E lens but I can't tell how it's good then others. Without UV filters will be better?
ofcourse without will be better, but I am anxious about the front lens?

Yes crazy a little :))
Can we say like that "film photography is an art creation , digital photography is a photo job."😄
Are you planning to clean your foggy lens? It might lose its magic? What is your opinion on the f/2.8 lens?
Don't want to right now, F2.8 is also good.
Truth be told. I don’t think it’s just the lens 😉 if you know what I mean
Peter@SH
Nice video. Will this lens work on the M6 without using the goggles?
You can’t detach the goggles. (Unless you use a Dremel tool or a hacksaw, but then you’ll have other problems…) But the goggles will still work with an M6, though the view will be smaller than you’re used to.
If you want remove goggles you also need ask someone adjust the focus system let M6 focus accurately.
Keep the googles, one model is removable. You get a lovely view but distorted, with goggles. some cry about heavier weight! And add A Noctilux O.95! My Summaron way better than the long gone stolen, 35mm Summicron, also had goggles!

Great video.
Would be interesting to compare that lens with the Summilux 35 1.4 pre-asph v2 version.
That old Summilux is in my eyes a beautiful tool which can create dreamy images on film, extremely well too.
35/14 pre-A is also a great lens, I have made a review and some shooting videos about 35/14 pre-a.
I hated my early V1 Summilux with goggles. The Summaron possibly Leitz's best!
what happened? The channel hasn't been updated for a long time.
