- During his 2015 visit to the Fretboard Journal, Chris Eldridge (Punch Brothers) performed two John Hartford tunes for us, including this cover of "Let Him Go On, Mama" from Hartford's 'Mark Twang' album. Eldridge had a little fun improvising an extended intro on this take.
Critter is playing a Martin-style dreadnought built by Japanese builder Hiroshi Suda, the same instrument he uses for most Punch Brothers concerts.
Eldridge called Hartford "the most important" during our podcast interview with him:

i thought i could play guitar, then I saw this. I can not play the guitar, This Guy right here, he can play guitar. One of my favorite Hartford tunes, beautiful rendition
You should see Bryan Sutton play.
There can never be too much Chris Eldridge in our lives.
Great to hear Chris sing a John Hartford song. Of course the picking is superb!
I'd never heard Chris sing before so my jaw literally dropped when I heard his voice. There's a kind of smokiness to it and the lyrics were sung with such tenderness and affection (even if he did forget the third verse!) I was truly blown away. Why doesn't he sometimes sing lead for Punch Bros.? He's got the perfect voice!!
Denise Page-DeMorst Saw them at the House of Blues in Dallas and he did sing lead on a cover of Through the Bottom of the Glass. It was fantastic.
Wow! Great to know. We saw them at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA. Great show but no lead singing by Chris.
+Denise Page-DeMorst He's a killer player, and his singing is right up there with his playing! I think he loves singing and playing as much as people love to watch and listen to him!
Tom E Muncey I agree, Tom. I was so fortunate to see the him and the band play live in Solana Beach at the Belly Up Tavern. It was a religious experience! :-)
Denise Page-DeMorst Agree! Let’s send Thile a petition.
No one is more fun to watch playing music than Chris! ♫
Such a great musician. Super nice guy too. I got to pick with him after a show he played in my hometown. He'll treat anybody like a friend.
Watching Chris pick and sing is a rare pleasure. I hope you have him back and do a feature in the magazine someday.
So good.
Man I love his playing (and singing). Wasn't that intro "Whistlin' Rufus?"
Yes!
Chris is so good! Music is more fun when the player is having as much fun as the listener! :-)
+Tom E Muncey
That is exactly why I love watching him play! He always looks like he's enjoying his fellow musicians no matter who he's playing with.
+krroebsu ....and he's so damn good! I love to hear his foot tapping.....He almost makes me want to jump up and start dancing! :-) ♫ ♫ Yeeeee Haaaaa!
Beautiful!
The verse he forgot, if anybody cares: "Well, he comes from a real old time way of life/He had to fight just to learn how/He might even have voted for Nixon once/But I'm sure he sees that now/Friday night he makes the best damn gumbo you'd ever want to eat/Saturday morning before everyone's up/He's gone off down to the fleet ... "
Bravo!
Has anyone tried to transcribe the intro he does here? I’m slowly working through it by ear but it’s kind of a beast!
I think critter is the best guitar player out there. He’s not Bryan Sutton or TR, but he has so much vitality and feel and the roots obviously go deep. He’s a master.
That guitar is doing a heck of a banjo impression on that rhythm.
Whistlin' Rufus
This one one of my favorite fretboard journal performances by far. I'm probably getting close to 50 views now.
Sweet~
Very Irish and very beautiful
Very nice. But I'm surprised you guys didn't credit the intro to improvising on Cherokee Shuffle…sweet take on a classic.
I believe it may have been temperance reel, but the fact that I can't put a finger on it for sure means he's doing some incredible improv! Haha
Good point. We can't do them back to back at jams, it screws everybody up!
Isn’t it Whistling Rufus?
The guitar looks like a Martin D28,
BUT
Look at the headstock in the video at 4:08-4:09
Never seen a headstock like that
Not sure what it says but it is not Martin & Co. Est 1833
Dan Kiely The builder of this guitar - Hiroshi Suda - is mentioned in the video description. Grant Gordy is another well-known player with a Suda.
Holy shit that intro. I can hear the lyrics but I know he ain’t singin yet
