That prosecutor went above and beyond. That wasn't just her doing her job, that was some real, human emotion, and I respect that.
she said it like it was, no sob story in the world was going to get past the fury she felt. when she lift the item they buried that poor baby in I got madder than I been in a long time and sad at the same time too....good job prosecutor I applaud you and the job well done. I thought for a second she was gonna throw it at them she was p.o. just holding it and probably disgusted too.

I live in southern Ohio. 6 1/2 years ago our next door neighbor had a baby girl, born 1 month early. The mother was a addict. She was constantly asking for help, money or anything else that she wanted. By the end of the 2nd week, that baby girl spent at least 3 days with us. The following week it was 5 days. We talked to CPS, to the sheriff's department, but taking a child away from the bio parents in Ohio is a long drawn out process. We weren't foster parents. But, CPS had already met my better half and talked to her almost daily, and before long the neighbor girl and CPS asked if we would take the baby. We got emergency certification as temporary foster parents in two days. This little girl was tiny. We both are on our 2nd go around and both have grown kids and I already have 5 grandkids. There was hesitation but knew we couldn't let this child stay with the mother. She eventually started thriving after about one to two months old and hasn't looked back. When she turned 3, the bio mom got caught receiving tax credits for the little girl along with other charges. She was sent to rehab. After she got out, she decided she wanted her baby back. She had already spent the first 3 years of her life with us. There was nothing we could do since we're no relation so we just did everything we could to accommodate and help the mother. Obviously, it wasn't easy. It's like losing your own child by this point. We watched for 11 months as this "mother" and her new boyfriend tried to raise three kids all under 5, while being addicted to several drugs. She lost custody again after 9 months. The little girl went to get grandma who had previously taken no steps to help. She keeps her fur about 6 months. That was 3 1/2 years ago and tiger little girl is back with us permanently. In the spring we can adopt and we plan to. The state bends over backwards to get children back to parents. To the point of harming children. The alternative is a foster system that is overwhelmed and under staffed. Neither of us had ever attempted to be foster parents before. It just fell into our laps. But I will say, I am glad it happened. Hopefully with time, our little girl will heal from the knowledge of having a family who have either failed or rejected keeping her. She's got a great children's therapist that she sees weekly and is slowly getting past it. But, she's still thriving. She's almost 7 but thinks she's 17 and a bundle of energy. Try the foster system. You might serve a child.

Because then they would lose their monthly drug money that is supposed to be being spent on the children. In Ontario, Canada, as far as I know for every child under 16 you get over $500.00 a month. When my child turned 14 I just started giving the baby bonus straight to them, anyone who knew this told me how stupid I was because my child lived with me and I had expenses. I just lived a little poorer, my child's whole life if they were with their father only ever got 2nd hand things,, they got their first real cell phone when they were I believe 17. Peace and much love sent from Ontario, Canada. P.S the guilt you have when your poor is horrendous.
A baby that she caused to have drugs in its system and going through withdrawals. Makes me sick. No empathy
A heartbreaking thought in this case is knowing the foster mother probably grieved for the baby more than his biological parents.
Also highlights the level of iq of those horrible parents. I mean how did they not think wat they were saying would be heard!

Baby Dylan should have remained with the foster mom until the parents remained sober for period of time. CPS/social workers in my opinion can be so dense when it comes to abbusive/drug addict parents by giving them the child/ren so fast. Such a deeply sad story.
They should have just let the foster mom keep him. I don’t understand why they wanted that baby back if they didn’t want to live him and care for him. It makes no sense. They had a loving person more than willing to keep him and raise him. Why didn’t they just let her keep him?

That female prosecutor was a bulldog. I usually can’t stand when the attorneys start yelling but this time it was deserved and she did a hell of a job. You can tell she had emotion in it and wanted to take those two scumbags down.

When is CPS going to be held accountable for these situations? They didn’t perform the weekly check ins. They didn’t even drug test the dad. If they had left Dylan with the foster mom, he would still be alive.
The lawmakers who vote for laws and money won't fund or authorize CPS organizations because there's no votes in it. The victims can't vote and the perpetrators are usually scumbags that most voters can't or won't identify with. Money needs to go to more important things, like showy projects that can get on the news and be used in campaign ads. It's all about the money.

The medical examiner in this case was amazing. She spoke clearly and concisely, not using medical jargon so everyone could understand. I appreciate that

As a drug addict myself these people make me sick. I've struggled with addiction my entire adult life and I've never hurt anybody. Drugs don't make you behave this way.

Having gone through withdrawls more times than I care to count, I agree that they must be horrendous for a brand new baby. Especially a premature baby. The amount of pain and suffering this poor tiny baby went through in his short little life is horrendous. He gets over withdrawls with someone who actually cares about him then gets ripped away from a safe home just be to neglected and abused by his own evil parents until it kills him. I feel so bad for their remaining child as well. He had to testify at their trial and he’s a very well spoken young man. I hope he can manage to have a good life after this.
The only, the ONLY reprieve is that a baby will not remember the experience. But yes, I have experienced the worst pain imaginable, and that was still preferable to WD. I'll never understand why people would do this to a child. He was safe, he was cared for...why did they fight to get him back when it's clear they didn't want anything to do with him?
The foster mother is an absolute Angel. Too bad Dylan couldn’t live with her. What a tragedy.
This happens often with DCS. It is ALWAYS their goal to reunify children with bio parents even when it is dangerous for the child. I have video and audio recordings of social workers saying this here in Nashville Tennessee. They are corrupt as fk. Total evil.

The foster mom would have given him a blessed life. CPS is so messed up.
Its a corrupt system. Back home in NC in the 00's there was a crack family that CPS took the kids from. After one clean drug test they gave the kids back only for the parents to go on a crack binge and beat their babies to death. CPS hounds decent parents while leaving the worst scum alone. Its unjust and may God have mercy on those corrupt bastards. I've seen so many horrors while working the ER that I've lost faith in our legal system.
So sad.. what's also sad that this is nothing new.

That prosecutor is amazing. You can hear the passion in her voice to bring these people to justice. Several times it sounds like she’s gonna start crying out of anger towards the parents and sadness for the baby. And the way she was grilling the mother was fantastic. More prosecutors need to have her energy
I don't know why these people didn't just leave the baby with the foster mother. That would've been a sign of some generosity by giving the baby a chance to have a better life.

They probably saw the foster program as stealing their "property". Drug addicts get defensive about having anything or anyone taken away from them...plus, they take it as a threat to see someone else raise their baby better than them.

Currently pregnant with my son, 22 weeks. I’m counting the seconds until I can kiss his face, soothe his discomforts, and watching him grow-I can’t begin to imagine this level of cruelty to an infant.

My Aunt used to foster kids. Her last placement was with an infant named Willie. He was born addicted and cried non-stop for the first two months. I bought her the softest clothes and blankets to wrap him in. The poor little guy was crawling out of his skin and it seemed everything that touched him hurt. Then when he was around 2.5 months old he settled in. He started to flourish. When he was around 18 months or so my Aunt was told he was getting a "kinship foster" placement. She questioned the caseworker because my Aunt had been told that Willie had no viable family which was why he was originally placed with her. To make a long and sad story short, the state of AZ placed him with the bio Dad's ex-gf. In my mind, an ex-gf is NOT kin. The ex-gf and the bio parents were cahoots. The bio parents told the ex-gf she could keep half of the foster care checks and they would take the baby. Willie died of blunt force trauma 18 days after he left my Aunt. She never did foster care again and she hasn't been the same since.
The thing is social workers are pressured to perform just like any other job. They are pressured to place kids in "kinship" placements and are in a hurry to clear their cases. They have performance reviews and these "stats" matter. I believe this is because a huge portion of our foster care system is privatized. The government uses state and federal taxpayer funds to pay private FOR PROFIT companies to find foster parents, monitor foster homes including group homes- in fact, MOST group homes are run by FOR PROFIT companies.
I don't think FOR PROFIT companies should be in the business of caring for our most vulnerable. People and Profit never end well. You have to ask yourself if these companies are in the business of making money off of people then what is their motivation to get these kids out of the system? This is why SOOOO many kids who end up in group homes go directly to Juvi and then Jail and then prison. They have been institutionalized from day one.
If you ever want to go down a rabbit hole- look into foster to group to juvi. Most of the companies that run one, run the others. I once spent way too long looking into who sat on the boards of these private companies that work in foster care and I found that A LOT of the people that sat on the board, also sat on the board of private for-profit prisons. I never say "private business" anymore. I always say "FOR PROFIT company." That way it reminds everyone that profit is being made.
Anyways. If you read this overly long post - light a candle and say Willie's name so that he isn't forgotten and may live on in some way.
Thank you for taking the time to write such an eloquent, and moving comment, that was clearly heartfelt. I know words are cheap, but may I send my sorrow for you, your absolutely incredible Aunt, and, of course, Baby Willie (which I hope a flight of angels took him to his rest, and to be counted amongst their own ...) ...
I agree with you: having being involved with social services, both inactive, and active, participant, that combination of having to meet expectations, plus chronic underfunding, means that removing a child completely from a family of origin is only done as an absolute last resort. Otherwise, the intense pressure, from above, means that, even if their instincts is to remove the child as far away as possible, given being placed in a no-win situation, and despite all of the red flags, they are often forced to do the unthinkable.
On top of that, is the caseload; due to the lack of staff, the average Social Worker often has far too many, and, often, individually, very complex cases, which the have to constantly manage, like plate spinning.
Given, again, the chronic underfunding, and that Social Work is seen as a high-risk, low-reward, career, with so few employed, with so little appropriate training, and pay far too low for the job that they do, it's no wonder that history of child deaths, at the hands of their own parents, especially the mother's, keeps happening, repeatedly, especially when multiple agencies are involved, and are unable to coordinate properly.
Child protection shouldn't just be seen as a matter for the States alone, but also a Federal one, too, especially as when the families under suspicion, keeps moving from one State to another. Just moving across a State line, with similar complaints following them, at that point, something Federal, concerning child welfare, and protection, should swing into place, and seen not just as felonies, but capital crimes, as well, especially if one, or more, child deaths is attributed to them.
If found guilty, through a unanimous verdict, and depending on the extent of the abuse, even if they plead guilty, as a priority plea deal, the tarrif of sentencing should begin with 25 years, and upto, and including, Life, without Parole, especially to be carried out in solitary confinement, in a maximum security prison.
I say solitary confinement, because, due to the testimony of former hostages, especially ones captured in Beruit, solitary confinement, for them, was like "being buried alive" ...
I still remember be taken to a famous castle, in Northern England, where, in the dungeon, and separated from the rest by a something of a wall, was a hole in the ground that stretched horizontally, and covered by a small, square, locked, grate, illuminated by a single halogen lamp. There is a name for it, but essentially, once the prisoner was slid into this thing, with the face staring upwards into the gloom of that dungeon, through those iron bars, of that grate, hearing the screams of the tortured, and essentially forgotten about (which is almost what the name of that hole means), with only occasional meals, the combination of dehydration, starvation, and, of course, forced to lay in not only their own excrement, but also that of the prisoners before them, meant disease, and death, was likely.
Granted, that is now considered a cruel and unusual punishment, if not torture, and is banned as such ...
... but locked up, by, and with, oneself, especially for someone whom thrives on company, and left alone with one's own thoughts, having to face their own daemons, 23hrs, everyday, with only 1 hour of unscheduled exercise outside that cell, for years, if not decades, for extroverts, in particular, all of that will eat away at them.
So, quite aside from the Innocents Project, which finds a few too many incorrectly convicted individuals on Death Row, why I think Capital Punishment should be restricted to Life without Parole, is because a death sentence, especially by lethal injection (which is only one step furthest away from a General Anesthetic, especially in some highly difficult surgeries ...), that is almost too swift. To be forced to live out their lives, in a cell, especially as they age, is, to me, a far worse a punishment.
In case of this ... mother ... to be locked away in a relatively small room, would, hopefully, give her an idea of being trapped inside those two crates, which, had Baby Dylan not been found, would've been his coffin for eternity ... so let both those two 'parents' experience that, each, seperated, and alone, from each other ...

I remember that case... I hate Arizona child protective services they abuse the children they take on and place them into worse homes or back with the parents they were taken from.

This poor sweet baby. It's so sick that some people believe killing their baby is their "right". 😭
I am a recovering addict and know first hand how strong the hold and influence of addiction can be. That being said, NEVER at any point, regardless of how deep your addiction runs, do you magically lose the knowledge of right and wrong. Sure, it can sink you into an abyss of desperation, which can definitely make you do things you wouldn’t normally even consider (like stealing or pawning valuables etc). It doesn’t turn your brain off though. It doesn’t erase all morals. They were monsters before drugs entered the picture. The drugs just lifted the layers of deception they surrounded themselves in so people wouldn’t know who they really were. Drugs are not an excuse for unacceptable behavior. Take it from an addict.

Giving a child back to parents with history of drug use... and then everyone is surprised when he ends up dead?
I had a friend who was a drug addict in high school, he stole from me and ever since then I've had real hatred for drug addicts. Don't telll me its a sickness, it's not... drug addicts are sociopaths who only care about themselves.
My son was 9 pounds at birth. I thought he was still so little and fragile.
That sweet baby was all of 7 pounds, I couldn’t even imagine how you’d be able to snap bones on a baby like that, being on drugs or not. A babies bones are considered “green” so very flexible, to snap or factored bones on someone so small would take such extreme force. What horrible parents.
to me that's big..all my kids have been all between 6 llb 9 and 6llb 13..I'm small, but they're all tall and two oldest are 6ft 4. ..

As a mother of a firefighter, having to watch them extract that from that well put a huge lump in my throat and a big sick feeling in my stomach... I pray my son never sees anything like this 😢 bless these firefighters hearts I can only imagine
I can’t imagine the heartbreak of the foster mother who dedicated herself to caring for a newborn going through withdrawals. All the love her friends & family showered on that sweet baby to save him. Laws need to be changed & I wish more decent people would become foster parents. Too many people do it for the money.

Abuse born addicted that go through withdrawal are the saddest thing ever. A hospital in my city Called Jefferson actually has a program where you can sign up to cuddle the little babies that are going through it.

Every time photos are shown of the sweet baby boy, it breaks my mama heart to know what he went through from start to finish. He had an 11-day reprieve of happiness and love from his foster mom and that was it. This poor poor little guy 😭

For some reason, our family courts believe parents have the right to possess their children...until they get school age & then the schools tell us what rights we have, depending on the state you live in. They always err on the side of the parents!

As a mother and former drug addict- I knew it was time unable to care for my young son so I asked my grandparents to care for him until I got clean. It took a couple years but I straightened myself out and took my son back. Best decision I could have made- he turns 16 in 00:05!

Oh yes, this wee bairn would have not only grown up, but he would have grown up loved and cared for. And - I suspect that a lot of others watching this would also be in line to take him. Heartbreaking.

I was always told in therapy that guilt is feeling like you did something bad, shame is feeling like you are bad. I think she feels neither of those. She doesn’t think she did anything bad, or that she is bad. She just thinks it’s too bad she got caught.
Most of the time in therapy people are feeling guilt and shame for things that aren’t their fault. In this case it’s the opposite. She doesn’t feel guilt and shame for things that are her fault.
This one was tough to get through. Anyone who kills a baby deserves the worst in life.

Living in WV, I know a lot of people exactly like this. These people are already not operating with a full deck, then they get hooked on drugs. Of course they also collect too many pets, keep having kids, and go driving while intoxicated. There aren't any good solutions to these problems, but prison is often the best solution to at least keep them off the drugs.

They looked like they were hardcore into their addiction when they were arrested. That baby never had a chance. It's unbelievable that social services would return a baby that was born drug dependent to the parents with the addiction so they could finish him off.

They said they were done with her. I said well your mother's a drug addict. I got scream that so bad that my mommy is a functioning drug addict. I do believe that is oxymoron. She has been doing methamphetamine since she was 17 years old. She is 53. I tell her you have outlived your lifestyle.

My nephew was born on August 27th and I would gladly go to prison if it meant protecting him.

I was a drug addicted Dad for a few years and left on my own because I knew my baby girl did not need to be around my lifestyle. It was so hard for me to except that I could not be a good father at that time. Luckily I had a beautiful, amazing wife that has never done a drug in her life…..my baby girl was safe. I went to treatment and got help and I’ve been clean for eight years now. My daughter is 11 and we are all back together and have three more children.
My little girl saved my life because she is the reason I got help. These parents can’t even except the fact that they failed her child. “It was an accident “, it is such bullshit….
You don’t accidentally drop your child enough times to cause all those broken bones and not realize you did that. I don’t care what drugs you were on, you know what you do in those moments and you have to take responsibility for yourself.

The Foster mother was a beautiful soul and I hope she goes on to help more kids from situations like these. She's a human incarnation of an angel and I have so much respect for her, and also the BA prosecutor. Ooo she was on fire.
I worked with a patient like that who thankfully had her kids taken away before anything worse happened. She got their names tattooed on her and everything. Even with all that, she refused to even try to be a worthy mother. She would cry about wanting her kids back but when I asked her plans of earning them back she would just give me a smile. I had built rapport with her so even she was willing to "admit" to at least a small bit of her bs. It wasn't the drugs that made her like that either, she was sober at that point because she was locked down basically. There's a lot of "mothers" like this, and I find that they create more of themselves if the child gets to live. The vast majority of mentally ill patients and trauma survivors are not like that. But when you meet one that is it's chilling. We need more foster mothers like the one in the video, and an overhaul of how we handle childcare, this is just unacceptable.

Dylan's descriptions, autopsy and treatment during his short life, brings tears to my eyes.
That is the most heated I've ever seen a prosecutor, and for good reason. There is so much tragedy here, baby Dylan above all. Addiction, which I assume both parents were, can and often does destroy lives and directly and peripherally, as in this case. This case is a good reminder that people need to seek treatment if they ever become addicted to drugs and or are using them regularly.

CPS and foster services need to be improved. At the very least, there needs to be an increase in funding and authority.
If a CPS worker comes to your door, you can politely decline to let them in. They need to give CPS workers more authority to ensure children are safe.
I have 2 sons that are exactly 18 months apart. My youngest cried for the first 6 months. It was frustrating and I was overwhelmed and sleep deprived. Not once did I ever injure my sons or "accidentally drop" them. What a bunch of bullshit. This is why some people should not be allowed to have children.

My son spent his first 6 months screaming due to (?) Cholic? Hunger ? Boredom ? He was born 23 1/2" long and only 7 lbs 15 Oz, and wanted to feed constantly. I nursed him as often as possible (he was 10 lbs 8 Oz at 3 weeks) and felt like I was going to vomit from exhaustion for all of that time. He slept for 3 minutes at a time and could remain awake for hours on that power-nap. Never EVER did I consider taking out any frustration on him ! Any sensible person would know that infancy is a finite period. (He's 28 and wonderful)
I watched my mom raise my three younger brothers. Two of them cried a LOT. They all woke up all hours of the night and didn't usually want to go back to bed. They frequently peed the bed once they were older, sometimes multiple times a night. My mom drank a lot then, took drugs at times, and she suffers from bipolar disorder, which sometimes led to pretty extreme fits of rage. She also suffers from severe migraines, which are crippling.
Even so, she stopped drinking and doing drugs cold turkey when she was pregnant, every single time. There was never the remotest chance she would have hit any of them, at any point, ever. Regardless of what else may have been going on. Crying at night was met with walking, rocking, and speaking gently, even when it was obvious she could barely keep her eyes open. There's really no excuse for these parents. Drug addiction doesn't mean you act like this, despite the ridiculous implication made in this video that all drug addicts abuse their kids. When you love your kids, you love your kids. These people are just totally fucked.

Whether it was because of apathy (unlikely) or an overwhelmed system (very very likely), the Groves should NEVER have been allowed to keep Dylan. if you take a few moments to imagine yourself withstanding 2 skull fractures, rib fractures, arm and leg fractures, without any relief, over an extended period of time, you are still light years away from knowing how this tiny baby really felt. The relentless suffering was unfathomable. I weep over it whenever I come across this case. I mourn that their living son has to carry this horror as part of his life's experience. These two should NEVER leave prison, EVER.

this prosecutor was badass. She showed the raw emotion, the seriousness of the situation, and how disgusting this crime was. Good for her.
Generally I think a prosecutor shouldn’t show that much emotion but this situation is different and I don’t think she could help herself she was so pissed off.

That prosecutor needs a promotion. She is a zealous advocate for baby Dylan and shows her passion for justice and the truth.
Has no choice. It's her job to prosecute to the best of her ability. Same with the defense. Must defend and try to get your client found not guilty by the absolute best of your ability.

I believe if a child is shown to have drugs/alcohol in their system at birth. Just remove the child. Social services should not give those children back. But courts THINK the birth parents are the best place for babies. NOT when born with withdrawal!
This female already had an older child and after so many years. Probably didn't expect to become pregnant again. We use to call it " Midlife Pregnancy " so sterilizing her or the father would not enter into this. But I believe drug/alcohol females should definitely be sterilized.

Mine too.... I can't imagine her having to live after prosecuting that case. You could tell she was not only passionate about her job, but how much this was affecting her as well. RIP baby Dylan! May GOD have mercy on the souls of those so-called parents.
Honestly, whoever made the call in CPS to easily give him back to his abusive family with no serious investigations on those evil drug addicts need to go to jail for child endangerment.

@@audrab27 there's suspicions that he might have already been dead in the final visit. I don't know about in the states but in the UK we have health visitors that visit every week for the first 12 weeks and they undress the baby, weigh them make sure they're eating and drinking enough and you can ask questions about things you're worried about. I worried myself sick when my son was a newborn because he had a slight rash on his face but it was a milk rash. CPS totally dropped the ball on this case. Jessica never moved out, they didn't even carry out basic health checks on a baby they knew was born addicted it just blows my mind! Whoever the worker was needs to be fired immediately!
its sad because there are many parents who have drug dependencies/substance use disorder that work SO HARD to keep it from affecting their kids. so many parents who work tirelessly day in and day out to get the help they deserve to care for their kids. i wish they had done the same
I can't fathom this cruelty. My new grandson was born at 24 weeks. No fault of my daughters, his mother. 1.3 pounds. He was in the NICU just 4 days shy of 4 mnths. He is home now. Watching that Lil wee man fight was a miracle. How do people do this to someone so helpless! Babies are gifts!
