- Here is the proper way on how to diagnose the condition of a refrigeration system if you have a broken valve plate into your compressor.
I hope this simple video will help you a lot esp for those who haven't yet experienced on how to replace the same kind of system.

A common cause of broken valve plates is you are getting liquid refrigerant back to the compressor. I know you are a busy man on that ship but i would try and diagnose the root cause of the broken valve plate that way it will stop happening. Also, I would really recommend pulling that compressor into a vacuum after you had it open to atmosphere. If that compressor has P.O.E oil in it and air gets into it you can start to form acid and it will break down the motor windings. I know you are a busy man on that ship and im not trying to sound snood. Just lending a few tips from a person who works on refrigeration equipment for a living. I really enjoy your videos keep up the good work!
I was thinking the same thing. Pulling a vacuum also ensures no moisture makes it to the expansion device and causing yet another problem.
I did some digging on starcool. They use r290 which is propane, so its legal (if not safe) to vent to atmosphere. They also use polyolester oil, which is hygroscopic. I'd pull a vacuum before I charged it just to remove any water vapor.
@@LaserUbermensch 6:38 in video, sticker clearly says under compressor R134a, ALWAYS pull a vacuum when you open the compressor to atmosphere, ALWAYS !

Hi Mark, ideal practice is i vacuum ang system and palit filter drier. Pero yung diskarteng pogi is isolate the healthy system and then pag napalitan na open mo discharge side para yung pressure is enough par itulak palabas ng refrigerant ang hangin sa crankcase.
Good day sir! I just want to ask if it is ok to open the compressor with the system without vacuuming it? You opened the LP valve plate which, made the compressor exposed to air. Will not the pressure be affected by this? Thank you, sir.
It would be interesting to know what spares you carry (and how many)... I imagine being at sea without a spare would be a major issue or is there built in redundancy as well?

It is better to recover the freon rather than releasing to atmosphere and carry out vacuum after boxing up compressor to be moisture free. Too many procedures, only one person, too many reefer containers. One after the other babies keeps crying, difficult to make systematically, can understand well good and informative video

one tip - i wrap the econ pipe with a rag so the debris from the insulation doesn't fall on to the new gasket surface. the insulation gets brittle and flakes off when you remove the VP.

Hi, Jake! In a such a case: LP v/v plate in doubt, there is in Menu can be performed Function test for the Compressor only (Pre Trip Inspection) and if it will Fail you can get Alarm: 840 - Valve Leaks. During investigation i do this action, it seems to me this one of rapid way. All the rest i do the same. Best regards and good luck!
Function test is only available in thermoking reefers, and pre trip inspection is not allowed in units with cargo inside, PTI TEST can be performed only when preparing reefer to enter service in PTI area with empty reefers.

It seems obvious now that it would be your responsibility to maintain the cooling systems on refrigerated units. But it didn't cross my mind originally.
That would seem to imply that you have to do daily rounds to check on each unit? Or do they alert when in trouble? How many refrigerated containers are typical?
Yup, the highest number I had was 1400 refrigerared containers. It is actually my main job onboard.

Sir what if the compressor is the problem. Will you have to replace with brand new compressor? I heard that these compressors are too heavy to lift (reach compressor weight is around 40kg-45kg)

As a hvac tech i can see many things wrong with the procedure. But I'm not faulting you lecky your not a full time hvac tech. You did what you had to do to get it running.
The thing is on board it's hard to carry the vacuum pump & recupation device below deck. Or did you mean something else?
It is possible to make pre trip inspection so that the alarm for valve plate defective will appear? And other way to ensure the valve plate is damage.
PTI TEST is not allowed in units with cargo inside the reefer
So if low side doesn't pull a vacuum when it's low sided.. most likely valve is broken in the head... cus it's suppose to pull a vacuum once you front seat the low side right?

Sir, ask ko lang insufficient cooling Ang reefer container freezer. Ang reading sa suction line almost vacuuming na. At reading Naman sa suction modulation valve ay same almost vacuuming. May posibilidad ba na Ang problema ay nasa suction modulation valve. Hanggang -10 lang sia ayaw ng bumaba Ang temperature. Ang high side pressure ay 250 to 300 psi .

How does propane work in low temp refrigeration?
It is one of the possible replacements for R410a over here.
Mostly its gonna run on smaller stuff for now (its capped at 6onz per circuit)... Lets see what time brings
How much pressure required for Daikin reefer container. R134a gas inlet pressure?
Are refrigerated containers powered off of the ships power or are does each container have its own generator like on a truck?
They are plug in on the ships power, 440V 3 phase. We have available of 900 sockets.

You have to if you missed to isolate the system and sometimes need to change the filter drier as well as to my case I completely isolated the system just before I open the head and purge completely the system.

How come you didn't pull a vacuum on the compressor, and didn't verify the correct charge amount after adding refrigerant?
I have 268 refrigerated container onboard and 7 of them are malfunctioning.
1. 2 Evap fan motor
2. Shorted power cable
3. Burn contactor
4. Power card
5. High pressure system
6. This chilled cargo with broken valve plate
I just need to fix all as fast as I can.

@@willrobbinson1 you would not be building any discharge pressure. Your suction pressure and discharge pressure would be very close to each other. Also you would be possibly experiencing oil loss in your compressor.

boss tanong lng..ano kaya problema cold storage namin. very low suction pressure or nag vacuum wla nmn leak..medyo marami na rin kaming nakarga na freon.. nag vacuum parin. ano kaya problema boss.. sana matulungan nyo kami boss.
kung nag vavacuum at tumataas ang discharge pressure pwede mong i check ang filter drier. compare mo ang inlet at outlet ng filter drier kung equal ang temperature, kapag equal then ok anfg fd mo pero pag unequal then need mo palitan.
in case ok ang FD mo then open mo evaporator mo and check kung nag yeyelo ang evaporator at txv kung may yelo maaring hindi nagbubukas ang txv mo, or kung may solenoid siya before txv baka di nagbubukas yung solenoid valve mo
