Lumion 12 Features? My Thoughts So Far

- Since the comments are disabled on Lumion's video (bold strategy Cotton lets see how it works out for them), I'd like to hear all of your thoughts.
As much as I love hopping on a good dog pile, I'm not ready to say Lumion 12 will be a complete disaster. I do think D5 is looking like the heir to the throne right now however. D5 has a very open dialogue about features being added to their software, while Lumion only offers these teasers which artists find frustrating.
I am going to make a comparison later today on my thoughts between the two software, but this video will focus just on what I think the changes to Lumion 12 might be.

I watched their reveal video very soon after they released it. It originally had comments enabled, but later turned them off after the comment section basically became free ad space for D5 Render.
I saw that ahaha I think that is never a wise decision for companies. If people are frustrated enough that they are venting in the comments, you are not helping the situation at all by jamming a rag into their mouth.

@@danivalus I also saw that, but honestly seems to entirely miss what I think lumion tried to do, the volumetric lights for example.
I just hope for a CRTL Z function lol!

Considering the price of Lumion this is quite frankly embarrassing compared to D5 Render. Sorry but Lumion, you're done.
I think they are going to really have to have some great features up their sleeve to top D5. I personally feel like the pricing system they have is extremely dated. They need to move to a monthly subscription and chop the price down a bit. D5's free version is pretty incredible in itself.
What they really need to add is the Orbit feature like any other 3D software has. Gaming navigation mode is a garbage. I spend 95% time to just navigate. Just add that feature.
If it is just the viewport you want to orbit there is a way!

This is a video I made about a year ago. It is pretty rough but it shows the functionality. What I really want is a true orbit for the camera to set up cool renders :(

Definitely volumetric lights but also did I detect some kind of auto exposure happening when the lights turned on ?. Also the red curtains seem to have some translucency.
I think you're right on both accounts, I'm really surprised I missed the curtains. Once you see them you can't unsee it. It looks like they added some true translucent materials, or maybe they just really upgraded waxiness. If that is an auto exposure that makes me think there may be at least a lighting upgrade so lets see!
Hi Greg. Still waiting for L13 teaser trailer. Nothing yet. Not sure what to make of that?!? A little disheartening.
I had no idea they used a pre made set for that scene. That's just lazy. And the fact that they had to turn off the comments on the teaser video just shows how unsatisfied people are with it.
Wow!! I didn’t realize that. That is not good.
I can see why people are mad about that. I personally don't care that much since that is what the Evermotion scenes are made to do. They could pull together a scene but for demonstrating how a scene can be brought into Lumion and rendered I think it does the job. If you could actually model in Lumion I would think it to be a different story.
The majority of Lumion scenes are either from the Sketchup warehouse or Evermotion I believe.
You are my favourite and I learned so much from you but after a while I switched to D5... Always hoped how cool it will be to see you talk about D5 but by the channel name i thought it won't happen, now i am really really happy, txs
Luminous Labs actually doesn't have anything to do with Lumion, that was just a coincidence. I will definitely continue making Lumion content, but we also started 4 other channels at specifically look at Blender, Unreal, D5 and Virtual Tours. My D5 channel has no videos but the first one will be very soon :)

@@mwave5642 The first few will probably just be some final animations, I need some time to sort out a few things.
D5 overall seems far easier since there are not really effects, it is all built-in

I hope Lumion 12 lets us render an entire movie but the clips are saved individually. This way, its easier to edit each clip on any video editing softwares.
Also, we need an aspect ratio editor.

Very annoyed that I just upgraded to 11.5 about 2 weeks ago and to get Lumion 12 it's another $1,500? Jeez!
That one definitely hurts :( The pricing model for Lumion definitely needs an overhaul because I find it pretty crazy at the moment.

While I haven't tested this I would assume yes! I am going to be releasing a video soon showing how to move materials around so this may come in handy!

It is really hard to tell what is new in the teaser video, except for the Volumetric Spot lights... I hope they didn't just expand the volumetric Light effect to affect the Spotlights... that would be even more lazy... most of the objects in the scene are already in the Lumion library (rolled drawings, triangle, pencil, tube of glue, etc.)... But there you go... that's a good example of why we don't need more objects like that in the library, because nobody use them.
Besides all the legitimate comments about the minimal improvements and high costs, I just don't understand why they don't hire someone from their forum to do these teasers for them... I mean look how ugly it looks!
I am usually active on the forum and I know at least 8 people there who would do a teaser in lumion 9 that would look far better and more advanced that this teaser.
What I mean to say is, that they should hire a better Archviz artist and have them sign a NDA, rather then having an intern at Act-3D - Lumion do this, and then act surprised that people hate it. Just basic Marketing.
I agree with you, I don’t really care for them adding objects since they aren’t modifiable. Without the ability to change textures I have 0 use for them.
I want to see what the changes are, but if the changes are what people are expecting I think the engine hit its limit.
D5 runs on unreal engine which in my opinion Lumion should have swapped to a long time ago. I would assume they have to train people specifically on how to use their engine, where with something like unreal they could have developers free lance for them.
The engine is one problem, but the biggest problems I have with Lumion right now is just the basic quality of life features. The fact you have to relink every texture when you import, and also the fact you cant just make every material a Lumion material. I spend so many hours on large scenes just clicking the material button it makes no sense.
I agree.. They might have reached the current engine limit. And I might be okay with that too since at our office we would have to retrain a lot of people to use something else, but like you said, the fact that they still don't want to add some basic quality of life improvements is just baffling to me.
Simple things like: More then 20 Layers, more then 10 Reflection planes, reflection and specular maps, ... No global UNDO button in 2021... \(O_o)/
I started using D5 at in tandem with Lumion for a year now, and since I can tell the D5 devs have put a lot more effort in listening and improving the software I see myself slowly pushing to change the office standards. It's getting more and more difficult cu justify 3 Lumion licenses upgrade cost each year.
@@sergiu87arh I have tried to talk on the forums about that, but Lumion development is so secretive that who knows? Just checked the price for upgrade from L10 Pro to L12 Pro and it's almost 2000 euros after taxes. Thats a huge amount of cash just for 1 license.
I like it when you make videos about lumion all the time. 👍My video card gtx 1060 can be commented on.
Sorry about the late response! I took a bit of a vacation. Any video card can get the job done, but it all depends on how fast you need the images!
Maybe there's more here that meets the eyes....
I feel the same way! There are some things that make me think that Lumion might be cookin something up but we will have to see!

this teaser video is really bad... quality, lights, materials... old versions were better and more attractive.
I didn't want to say too much about the teaser before seeing the features, but overall I am pretty underwhelmed by this release unfortunately.
The trailers were pretty underwhelming if u ask me, looks like twinmotion more than lumion

It never does unfortunately. We are left to try and figure it out ourselves and it often pisses people off even more.
I'm still hopeful there could be some pretty cool features coming but we will have to see!
