Ok so King Viserys in House Of The Dragon is actually one of the most complicated characters in the show. Though on the surface he seems like a King who simply seeks peace there's far more going on with him. During the Happy, Sad, Confused Podcast, Paddy Considine discussed his portrayal of the King in depth and I think it was completely eye opening interview that went into what really motivated the character.
Throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down what was said and how it makes the character even more intereting.
Now there will be fully spoilers for what happens to Viserys so if you haven't seen up to episode 8 of House Of The Dragon then I recommend that you turn off now. Hit the thumbs up to give us your favour and pledge allegiance to our house by subscribing.
With that out the way, thank you for clicking this, now let's get into our King Viserys video.
-
Now in order to understand the secret that Viserys carried I think we have to hear it from the man himself. To give some context to this he's talking about what he took from the King, his relationship with Aemma and also a deleted scene that had his reaction to her death in the immediate after math of it.
-
So that explains the real tragedy of Viserys in that he died along with his wife. I love the section about him refusing to accept any healing because he has no interest in being saved and just wants to be with his wife.

Paddy absolutely nailed the depiction of Viserys
Yeah he killed it. Deserves an Emmy for episode 8.
@@heavyspoilers - Yeah that scene when they’re all at the table and he’s yelling at everybody was absolutely chefs kiss.
Thats a fact. Hasn’t been a better performance on this show or the original.
Hope Paddy gets an Emmy, he gave a phenomenal performance.
Here here
Paddy was so brilliant in that role. I loved hearing his thoughts on what happened with Emma and ‘injuries’ on the throne. Thanks Paul for continuing to bring these ‘extras’
Aemma **
@@syzionaurifex5383 watch out for the spelling police
Paddy was amazing as Viserys and the "my love" line was pure brilliance.
He really has a deep understanding of who Viserys is and what's going on in his head.
So when he says "My love" it was the actor's idea... Man, he so deserves that Emmy...
It makes sense why the King protected his daughter so much, he carried the guilt of killing her mother. Well played Paddy, well played.
killing her FOR A MALE CHILD it is very important to his guilt imo
and to the writters as well for making his intentions more in depth frm the blandness in the books
@@mianadahlia Yes Maám of course. 👍
@@batchagaloopytv5816 Indeed 🔥
@@mianadahlia For all of the historical references to real things in the series, it kinda missed the mark on his motivations there, indeed... If actual wars were waged simply because a male bastard was offered a legitimate claim as heir and a death arguably cut that legitimacy short... It has to be on the rare genuinely good king's mind that others won't care if he chose a daughter to be his heir because she was his eldest. He could have the best intentions in his decisions but still fear that a succession war is immenent over far less... And how do you actually make your decisions last beyond your own life, with so many people clawing for position? I think it makes all the sense in the world that someone in his position, with those traditions and politics, yet, with an actual conscience, feared the conflicts that could arise if he didn't have a male heir from his first marriage... I like that it wasn't just some callous disregard for his wife to get an heir, but more that knowing the pricks around him would accept nothing else at the point of a sword... It's a better tragedy, really. Having to choose between your only real chance at preventing a succession war... And your own wife... And failing both in choosing the sacrifice you thought was right for the most people.
What an actor Paddy Considine is. He's that Ned Stark figure that was so central to the plot for Season 1. Dude did an incredible job.
I think regardless of the book's take on him that there was inspiration from Baldwin the IV, and his depiction in Kingdom Of Heaven, played by a fully masked Edward Norton. A genuinely good and praised king that only wanted peace and succumbed to supposed disease far too early.
@@Knight-Bishop Baldwin and Viserys are alike in a lot of ways. Makes sense for him to be inspiration behind the story.... I love that movie and Edward Norton does a badass job in that role.
Paddy Constantine is an incredible actor
Magnificent totally 💯
The last words said it all. He never got over Aemma’s death and his hand in it. Also explains why he is so loyal to Rhynarae. Loved this character the more the series went on. Long time PC fan I loved him in the Third Day as well.
I didn’t know much of his work before this show. He was one of my favorite characters in the show because there was more to what was going on with him than was on the screen. Not many actors can do that…they’re just in the scene. Paddy was in the character fully. So impressive!
Paddy won me over 100% with his incredible talent. I love Matt Smith's acting as well, but he gets to play the big character types, hero or villain. There's a lot of colorful characters in HotD, in fact, played by great actors. But even though Viserys isn't a grand personality, he immediately became my favorite character because of Paddy's ingenious acting choices.
The walk to the throne is a unbelievable moment.
Give that man an Emmy...I felt his guilt, pain, and depression. He played it so well
Its incredible how they had so many little details in this show. Its one of those shows that doesn't hold your hand, and if you ever watch it again you see a whole new side to everything.
Paddy was so good. Hope he gets an Emmy nomination
What a brilliant actor, I felt everything that he describes in the interview. This guy has gone under the radar for far too long, only just realised how long after rewatcing Dead Man's Shoes and seeing how young he was. Tyrannosaur is a gem and just showcases his talent across the all aspects of filmmaking. I feel blessed knowing his back catalogue and thrilled more people are introduced to his massive talent
Totally forgot about dead man shoes, such a great film!
@@Soulwalrus1 definitely worth rewatching if you haven't for a while, it still holds up. A young performance from Toby Kebbell is also a highlight (again criminally underrated). Paddy's also exceptional in Peaky Blinders although a little underused
Although I wasn't that enthused about "Wolf" (2021), Paddy Considine was brilliant in the role of the cruel Psychologist. He is a versatile, talented actor, writer, and storyteller.
@@booperpotpie9634 multi faceted, very talented! Just looking at his acting credits didn't even realise it was him in 24 hour party snd had forgotten he was just hot fuzz, know what I'm watching tonight
That man had me thinking he was dying in real life, truly a masterpiece of an episode. The best episode IMO and the one with the most replay value along with the finale.
It's telling that my first thought was "oh he's looking so much better" lol
It doesn't help that Rhaenyra looks everything like Aemma.
Paddy was simply amazing! One of the best acting performances I have seen in a TV series.
Thank you for showing us this interview with Paddy!
This adds so much context and texture to his character.
Much appreciated 🙏
I can't imagine many of the original GoT cast received a personal message from GRRM congratulating them for creating a better character than one he wrote.
Big props to Paddy Considine. Emmy-worthy stuff in Ep 8
Even George RR Martin absolutely adores this character that Paddy did to his character viserys the first
The lack of making choices
Made his patience poisonous
That moment in the first episode, when they show the funeral pyre, and the camera just pans down to show the baby is on there too...man, gut punch. All the pain and fear she suffered in her last minutes, all for nothing...
The character of Viserys was so moving! One of the best on screen performances I've ever seen.
Good work, Paul. Thanks as always
Thank you
Thanks for posting this. Good stuff here.
Paddy,
Did such a great job in his role. There is so much attention to all the details he gave to this character and I am so impressed.🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Paddy was brilliant as Viserys. Best character in the show, he became the character, loved and suffered like the character, a real tear jerker of a performance.
Some great insights here! Adds a lot to an already excellent performance.
Paddy Constantine the legend 🙌 🤴
thanks for the info
With so many, Paddy should get an Emmy nomination at the very least
I took a real dislike to Paddy Considine after his portrayal of the priest in Peaky Blinders, such a good villain but really put me off, the mark of a good actor!! As Viserys, I take it all back, such an amazing performance, Lord of the tides was masterpiece. I recently lost my dad so the episode was extremely emotive for me, one of the last sentences said as well was ‘no more’ I cried through the entire episode. Matt Smith’s performance as well, the look you have watching someone you love wither away… heartbreaking. Enjoyed the show so much Paddy’s motivation really showed through, deserves major recognition for the role. Looking forward to season 2 x
This man was amazing, the whole cast was epic.
I actually forgot he was an actor playing Viserys
He was absolutely fantastic. Every scene he was in I genuinely was compelled and wanted more.
Paddy Cosidine deserves every single accolade, award nomination and award coming to him. I'm not a GOT fan, HOTD is the only GOT series I have watched but by God, Paddy Cosidine was absolutely immense.
theres only one other series you could have watched -
And this is the reason he reaches out to his wife at the end on his death bed. WOW just WOW.
He truly understood the character. What amazing acting in this series! Rings of Power should take notes. 🥴👍🏼
Paddy did such a phenomenal job. I was hesitant in the first episode. He seemed like a poor casting choice. But I was wrong. Very very very wrong. He did an amazing job.
Give this man all the awards!!!!
Omg this genuinely made me cry
Thanks for the Viz coverage, our Ned Stark of House of the Dragon
All Hail Ser Paul Spoilypants of RUclipsrous
The first of his name
Lord of all breakdowns and spoilers.
Breaker of upload speed time records and father of humans
Paddy did such justice to Viserys. A lot of characters in Fire and Blood seem more 1 dimensional compared to the GoT series. This makes the story much better IMO. I cant wait to see how the other characters come alive on screen
Omg! That shirts so cool.
Viserys needed to crown Rhaenyra while he was living to ensure that she kept the throne, but that would be a completely different story.
Wonderful performance- best I've seen in years
Powerful
Give this man an award
He killed his wife in hopes it would
Be a boy , and it died . Therfore he killed his one love for nothing. Because of that he owed it to his daughter to give her a better treatment instead of just pushing her aside for a boy like he did his own wife
He still smashed Allicent though. That's where he fkd up. Should've just pulled an Aegon on the window lol
Loooool
💀💀💀💀💀
If Viserys put the crown on aemea in the tub in a playful lovful way the crown would carry so much more meaning if we saw it on her mother's head for a scene
Wow, that’s deep.
Just bought the t-shirt. Where we I download the AR app
Lets go🔥👍🏻😁
I like the character and the actor did an amazing job, especially towards the end. I do think as a king he was kind of weak. So much could have been avoided if he would use his authority as a king. The way he allowed some people to talk to him wouldn't have happened in GOT. He let a lot slide.
That’s the whole point of his character lol. That’s the kind of king he was. He was a good man, not a good king
All the cast is top notch... but this guy is on another level.
Viserys was a great character, underrated
That shirt is bomb. Wish I could afford to get it but I have more pressing financial issues at the moment.
6:25 I thought he lost his arms but its still there
No one mentioned that in his last scene that he said " My Love" and made a connection that he was talking to his wife at that moment.
"You're fu€king there mate"
Haha classic
I had only seen him as Claude Bolton from the outsider which he was amazing in. And he was amazing in the House of the Dragon. I guess he is just a great actor i guess
I feel like she was with him in his dying breath even before watching this. So sad.
Amazing Video Spoiler Man 👍
RIP TAKEOFF
translation: "I worked my ass off doing an amazing emotional scene and these idiots cut it out"
the season should have ended with either viserys' death or aegon's coronation, and with the one or two extra episodes to get to 10, the show should have established queen aemma as a character before her death. I also would have liked to have a bit of screen time for the strong boys doing something other than bullying aemond that would have made me give a damn about them.
They should not delete his scenes
Why hasn’t anyone asked or said why the Iron Throne was making the king sick?🥴🤔
lol Paddy.. sounds like after a few shots he becomes "the Critical Drinker" 😅😁
this explains a lot and i hate Viserys a lot less now
Paddy for best actor 🏆🎭
King Viserys, King of the Guilt
I bow to the house of PunDragon
This makes sense. When you get this directly from the actor it makes the story more poignant. Living, ruling and trying to protect your family while all the rats 🐀 plot and scheme for power.
Man just think if Viserys would of survived...He was such a interesting character, I would love a younger Viserys and how he became King, if he was like Daemon and what changed him to be more peaceful... exspecially seeing how he was so caught up in the prophecy that a man like Viserys would sacrifice his own soulmate for it.
hey. how come no one is talking about Pennyworth?
what the heck... youtube unsubbed me! dont worry I remedied the issue :P
Much appreciated
Heavy on knowledge ✅ Heavy on humor ✅ Heavy on brilliance ✅ Perpetually awesome, Heavy Spoilers 👍🏼
paddy stole the show tbf as he should
then why the hell did he remarry! he should’ve just taken the valerian 12 year old and never bedded her and not jeopardize his daughters claim while not pissing off the valerians. and also not dating his daughters bff. KEY bad move
The awesomeness of a throne made from the swords of all who you conquered is cool in theory but would get old really fast, especially after the first cut. So uncomfortable to just sit on. Fuck this shit.
But why did Viserys ever even f*** Alicent? If he had just refused to remarry and let Daemon marry Rhaenyra, none of this wouldve happened. The people wouldve stood bu Rhae as heir if she was married to Daemon and had a son to reign after her. Viserys is the cause of everything. He is the cause of his wife dying and the whole war that ensues. He was so against Daemon marrying Rhae because of the incest but then married his two full blooded kids to each other. 😑 How does that make any sense? I cant stand Viserys.
I bend the knee to house spoilers
