The twist revelation took a bit of time to sink in for me. Arrival sure proved before Blade Runner 2049 and Dune how Denis Villeneuve could help to revitalize the sci-fi cinema.
Normal Hollywood alien films, you mean, where aliens are communist monsters who invade and drink innocent blood (thanks for all that money in the fifties' pentagon!). While in the rest of the world, alien movies are much more like this: thrillers about contact with the utterly unknown, where the danger lies in the human incapacity to comprehend the unfamiliar.
They've got the same number of dimensions as us (or Louise wouldn't have been able to pick up their gift), but their language rewires how their brains work so they're able percieve all of time. The idea of the future being inaccessible is just a flaw in human perception, in the story at least. It's probably inspired by the aliens in the book Slaughterhouse 5, which percieve humans as worm like squiggles, as they can see our entire lives all at once. Like the Heptapods in Arrival they also treat all communication as merely a performance, as they already know what the other is going to say but it still needs to be said. The aliens in SH5 even know they're destined to be destroyed by a civil war in 500 years, but since the future is something they know, they just accept it as the way things play out, treating all tragedy with the phrase "And so it goes..."
I don't think they 'move' through time; their language is so entangled with the fabric of the universe that they know what will happen, because they know what happened.
No. There's no time - that much even we know since Einstein. Time is just a 4th (spatial) dimension of spacetime, that we - for some reason - perceive as a continuous one way movement from past to future. Why? That is the mystery. Now the movie proposes that perhaps the reason lies in the way we think. And the movie also applies an interesting concept, that the language we speak influance the way we think. The aliens' languge is wildly different from earth languges therefore their way of thinking is very different as well - making them able to see time as a whole, not on a moment to moment basis as we do. The aliens do not travel in time, they just perceive time (past, present, future) simultaneously. And that's what Lois is able to do, by understanding and learning their language. That's why their language is the gift, because it transforms human thought processes.
@ I did some more digging and came to the conclusion that the language the aliens taught the protagonist rewired her mind to see past present and future all at once; hence, the book she wrote was “The Universal Language.”
I know I'm going to get a migraine thinking about this so I'm going to step around that and just not think about it. Sapir/Whorf hypothesis, aka Theory of Mind, is a lot easier way to approach this. Basically in order to conceptualize something, you need to have language define it. Think of the word "Average" in terms of math. A tribal human who doesn't have that word in language probably lacks nuanced thinking. So there is something that makes sense about this - so presumably if you had a language that dealt with these concepts who knows what we might be able to figure out.
They never stated that in the movie, but it does sound plausible, that as soon as they had invented FTL travel their perception of reality changed and so did their language. (As scientists will tell you, FTL travel does involve a breach of normal causality.) They are trying to reform the way humanity thinks so that humans will be able to help them in the future (in 3000 years); there evidently is something that humans have and heptapods do not, but they won't be able to benefit from humanity teaching them this unless humanity has learned their way of thinking. This is known as a Bootstrap Paradox I believe, but there are also literary precedents such as Merlin in The Once and Future King, who already know how Camelot will fall even while he teached the future King Arthur as a boy. So the actions of the heptapods are not entirely altruistic, though humanity does benefit from transforming their thinking (mainly it's not one nation against another anymore, but humanity develops a communal sense of themselves as one species; the message of the aliens can only be decoded by humanity as a whole because none of the nations has all the necessary information for decoding it).
No, mf. It was inherent in circular nature of their language and overall way of thinking about things as opposed to humans linear languages and linear conceptual bases of thinking. Teaching humanity the circular language opens the door for our "thinking" evolution ...
aliens arrive to earth searching for help but in order for humans to help them they teach them a new language that changes the way humans percieve time.
The aliens can see the future but can't really just change it when they want. in 3 thousand years the aliens will need help and they are trying to ask the humans for help. First, they must teach the humans a language that allows them to see the future. Multiple ships show up around the world, each one hoping to find the human that can learn the language. When Louise learns the language, she also sees through time she can see how to stop the chinese from blowing up one of the alien ships. because the chinese were going to blow up 1 ship, they all decided to plant bombs on the ships near them so the aliens couldn't retaliate...first strike by humans. because Louise can now see through time, she contacts the chinese offical who can stop the chinese bomb (which stops everyone else from bombing the aliens). She gives the chinese official information that only a time traveller would know.
This exact movie scene: "We help humans, in three thousand years, humans help us" Some idiot: "Bwah how can stupid humans help advanced alien???? 😱🙄🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔" Jesus christ. And to think these people are allowed to vote.
I get confused, I can see travelling back in time is a possibility but not forward! Yet I'm contradicting myself cos IF can go back in time to past we came from the future??
“Your Co-stellation is going to recycle the innerhood of our constellation Ursa Major … we are migrating from outer Ursa Major to the rogue planets belt between your outer Co-stellation orbits of Procyon and Tau Ceti”
Maybe in one instance it happened and then they warned themselves in the past to avoid this future? That's the crazy part, they can communicate in the past, present and future.

Shame the movie had everything , great idea , pretty good cast but ended up with a slightly confused story that really wasn't executed correctly and became boring .
4th dimensional beings (time is NOT a dimension but that is a different conversation) or even 5th, 6th or 7th dimensional beings cannot and do not know the future...unless they time travel lol. Sounds stupid right?? Its a movie guys. Here is a real mind bender...Jesus (God) can actually know the future because He is outside of time and all space (dimensions). Let the arguements begin 😀
Hi everyone! What grade (out of 10) would you give this video?

This film was a serious mind trip. A great departure from the normal alien films.

This film shows us the possibilities of life beyond what we traditionally been shown.
This film was a fever dream. Incredible.

I love that the aliens need us. Unfortunately, I bet it's to defend them because we know how to war.
One of the most inspiring and prophetic films ever made. Thank you Dennis. ❤
Amy Adams is a great actress
Also so very naturally beautiful
The reason why real aliens come to earth is that Earth has the best holiday hotel prices.
Oh, and the dinner specials!
it's the fruit..... worth the trip just for the produce
Is this true?
They came a long time ago and they've been here ever since.
So they are four-dimensional beings who can move throughout time? They can see the past, present, and future after all.
