My 1999 2500 dodge cummins 4x4 was still running and pulling like a champ when I sold it at 251k miles, majority of it's life was towing. Then got a 2005 3500 dually, 4x4, HO geared 410. Still awesome at 207k miles when I traded. Neither truck fell apart, neither truck had any engine or trans issues. Both trucks had fuel pumps replaced around 120k miles, both trucks needed front wheel bearings around 150k-170k miles. My friends 05 Ford 3500 power stroke cost him over $13k in repairs before it hit 100k miles. With my 2 previous dodges, neither needed anything other than servicing and brakes until over 100k miles.
I have a 2017 Ram 3500 Longhorn with a Ram hitch, and a 2021 DRV. I would like to raise my hitch for more bed clearance but when I measured my total height I am 13’6”. That is with my suspension in the toe mode which lowers the back of the truck. So definitely something to consider when adjusting heights.
Loving this series! Just looking at 3500 single wheels myself right now. I managed to find a unicorn truck with all the toys but unfortunately it’s in black. Looks like I may have to settle for that color. No idea why dealerships order heavy duty trucks in such a boring colors. Next you could test the following if the truck has it: 1. TTPMS (Trailer TPMS), however it likely requires installing sensors in your tires which I don’t think you would do for a quick loaner test lol. 2. Trailer Blindspot monitoring, should be a setting in the trailer menu to set to max 40ft. 3. Factory Trailer camera. It’s a hardware system and I don’t even know if the cable will be long enough for that size of trailer. -- Also I’d be curious to see if you found a way to manually control the air suspension? From what I read it’s all automatic unless you put it into bad lowering mode. Interesting system but I was expecting to have more control over it. Keep up the great work!
Just came to mind. Texas homes are fairly cheap compared to SOME other states. Have you considered buying a bigger property so you have room for all of your toys, possibly indoors?
I love my 18 Ram dually. I might not leave Ram if they continue what they are doing. Only thing I would change is I wish they did running lights in the mirrors two years ago.
That is a good looking truck. IMHO I think it’s better looking than the Chevy 3500 was/is. Thanks for the clarification on the Curt hitch connectivity arrangement. I was one of those individuals who thought that it only had 4 bolts carrying the weight and didn’t clearly see the pin holes until you pointed them out this time. It seems like that should be more than enough for towing that type of Fifth Wheel.
I guess I'm getting old. I'm just not a fan of the "blacked out" era. Give me a 60s or 70s pickup all factory stock. Great video JD. Do some camper shell reviews please! I'm still on the fence A.R.E or leer.
I went and looked at the new dodges.....great looking truck. I would be happy with a flatbed drw. My fear with dodges is that they fall apart around that Cummins.
. those are the years they started to improve, there is a reason there are only a few 80's-90's dodges on the road.....and practically zero working on ranches or farms.....
@Joe Peluchette we had an old 80s 360dodge at the farm. What a turd. We actually used the 80s f150 with the 6cyl. more than the dodge with the 360. I want to like dodge cause of the Cummins option, but an engine is only a part of the combination that makes a good truck.
I love that truck! I found one with that setup except it didn't have auto level system and it was silver. The red isn't bad but the silver was really sharp.
Ok. That cummins is a dream machine. The only thing, like you mentioned previously, is it needs the 4500/5500 front axle. Then it would be perfect. Love the shot of you backing up. Looks like you've hooked up a trailer a time or two. Cheers!
Sweet. Let`s see how it rolls. With the new Ram`s it kind of change my mind from last year towards Buying a New Truck, this looks just right. Just waiting to see if any bugs show up. By New truck time this year. Hope it goes good.
I noticed two thing right off the bat. 1. The air system on the '20 truck must be programed different than my '18 as I cannot lower the suspension without a load nor can I manually raise it. 2. you didn't close the tailgate to show the clearance at it's center since it is higher than the bed sides especially in relation to where you were referring to clearance. I have an '18 3500 with the air assist.
Truck looks sick..I wish I had one. I'm excited to hear how it towes the beacon as well. Especially compared to the ford. I'm sure you will have some good input for us
Am I the only one who hates the monochrome/blackout paint jobs most trucks have these days? It doesn't need to have the crazy chrome the denali has (although I do think think its the best looking) but like the platinum superduty or the high country Silverado or even rams normal limited without the blackout just look so much better
I’m not a big red guy but on that ram it looks Absolutely beautiful I agree with you 100% that is Definitely the nicest dually on the market hands down
Great video. Very good truck and fifth wheel combination. The air bag option on Ram may be the deal breaker. I had the Air Lift 7500 air bags in my 2016 Ford F-350 dually, and I noticed a big difference in the ride comfort. Plus I was able to level the truck/trailer easily. With my new 2019 F-350 dually, the ride height is too high for the air bags.
You mentioned riding around with the rear set to lowest height. What is considered the default height, and which height are the headlights aim on? My concern is that you're driving around on low ride height, with your headlights pointing higher than they would be at a higher rear ride height.
I sound like a creep when I say this-but I've watched all of your videos and the Vanleigh beacon is my absolute favorite of all the ones that you've toured.
One thing you forgot to talk about last time; with that air ride rear suspension, how does it ride empty compared to your truck or the GM version. I would think it would be better.
@@BTBRVReviews I went back and watch that video again. No. You did not. You did speak of the air ride. And some of its advantages. But you did not even mention the advantage of ride quality. And you certainly didn't take it out for a drive empty. Or any other way. I'm interested to know if it in fact does improve the ride while empty. Normally these trucks ride like buckboards.
It's odd that I never really hear about the real reason for weight ratings which is stopping. Being able to carry the weight and power to pull it is important but being able to stop after it's moving is even more important.
JD about how many miles are on the manufactured vehicles when you get them, and perform tow test? Do you remember about how many miles the Super Duties had during the Ford event you went too earlier this year? I guess I'm asking has the engine and transmission been broken in before they are given out
That’s a really sexy looking truck. I tried to get one but the dealer wouldn’t budge. I ended up with the other sexy one, the Denali 3500 HD and I love it. The hitch looks nice too. Are you finally going to leave Ford JD?
We thoroughly enjoy your videos and appreciate what you do! I'd like your opinion. We have a Grand Design Reflection 337RLS 5th wheel (35 ft. 6 in.) on order and we're going back and forth with what truck we should purchase. The UVW is 10,570 lbs. and the GVWR is 13,995. We're looking to purchase a used truck and will be using it primarily to pull the 5th wheel (not for daily use). We live in Northern Michigan and much of our travels will be around that area and occasionally some trips out east and out west. Would any particular 3/4 ton diesel be acceptable or would a 1 ton dually diesel be the best way to go? If there is a 3/4 ton truck option could you please share with me the specs it should have? Any input would be very much appreciated. Keep up the great work on your videos!!
It’s a shame that you cannot get that level of interior luxury AND you cannot get the auto-leveling on the regular cab trucks. I DON’T NEED 4 DOORS of a truck that’s longer than a parking space, but I really do want leather buckets, 12” screen, and auto-leveling.
Love the looks but the 2500/3500s are still the old tiny cab. You can tell right away you are still sitting in a cab designed in 2010.. My friend has a 2019 limited and it’s beautiful but I’m so spoiled by the visibility, interior room and cab space in my 2020 F150.
As a owner of a 2019 f150 crew cab and a 2016 3500 ram megacab. There is nothing outdated about ram. In fact ford needs to get with it and learn how to make there rear seat recline.

I like your F450 better, the lines of it look better . This is nice, but your F450 looks a lot more sophisticated than this Ram. It looks a little bland on the outside.
So I have an 18 ram 3500 with the factory air. It has an Alt Trailer height button. All it does is lower the rear about 1 inch, but only when it has enough weight on the truck to allow it to drop.
