- One day of exploring little known places of southern Italy in winter. I rented a car and drove from Matera to the ancient ghost town of Craco, stopped in Taranto, found mysterious ancient ruins and ended the day in Santa Maria di Leuca on the Mediterranean Sea. You can watch the full video about the strange ghost town of Craco here: • Exploring the Surreal ... And here's Part 2 of my southern Italy road trip: • GETTING DEEPER INTO IT...

Thanks a lot for watching and safe journeys!
Hope you had a wonderful UK vacation with your friend must have been great for you the usual solitary traveler. Can’t say we didn’t miss you but more so grateful for all the previous real time footage in India, so you more than deserve a break from social media! Hope you are rested, happy and enjoying Greece. Namaste 🙏🏽 Julie 🕉
Wow, guess I am not the only one!
You were away for a couple of days in the UK and I started to miss your videos (I am in London, btw). I was checking your channel for new material literally everyday day! I think i am addicted to your content.
Imagine the people who walked there thousands of years ago? What a story is in that place.
And people still walk here
Just did a similar trip myself back in March. The countryside through Basilicata was just incredible. I was sad that Craco was so closed off. I could have easily spent a day exploring that town. Only got a few more episodes from this trip to post on the Amalfi coast and in Rome at the end. Been following for years, and look forward to continuing. Happy Adventuring.
The "Block Graveyard" was a stone block quarry. The lines where they had use saws to cut out the stone blocks. The blocks around are the ones that fractured.
Happy to hear you are back in the best country in the world Greece
Glad you had a nice trip with your friend and that you are back posting videos. It is nice that although this video is from Italy there is a Greek connection in it (being that you are currently in Greece)!
Thank You Gabriel for the video ! Hope All is Going Great for You 🙏🌎
I am sort of waiting for Gabriel to order some good authentic Italian food too.
Ah and he did at the very end Ravioli and meatballs.
It was delicious. Thanks for watching to the end. 👍✌
That place is absolutely incredible. 😍
Finally! Italy! A great adventure begins! Ciao!
Italy has great underground places
From the merry isle to memory lane in Matera. I'm ready to find some warmer caves for future spring retreats. Thanks for the views. ☆
This was fantastic. Craco is amazing! Wow. Looks like it could be the set for a cool movie😁 So much happened there…
Nice to see Italy and Europe back. I am surprised how much interesting and mysterious can be seen in this heel of the Italian boot. Sicily could also be full of historic surprises, I guess (as another part of Magna Graecia).
Yeah I need to get to Sicily and also Sardinia.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos We happened upon Sicily last November ( An airline sale we couldn't refuse) and really enjoyed it. So very much history and a good mix of beautiful villages along with some big cities.
Finally, a new video. 11 days later
Thank you for this Gabriel, I've been missing your videos, though it's so important to know when to take a break. All the best 🌸
awesome, im visiting Naples at the moment so this serves as cool complimentary piece to watch while im currently in my room after too much affordable local wine and pizza
Sounds like you're having a good time, enjoy Italy. Pompeii is worth a visit, just a short train ride away.
Wow Gabriel! History of Italy is amazing and the things you find. Can't wait to see videos of Greece but always love the older videos or ones you haven't posted yet. Thank you and be safe 😊❤🙏
There is a very old church in Taranto with the crypt of a saint (dont recall his name) and a museum with ancient greek pottery. Also the trulli s are close.
I’m visiting Malta 🇲🇹, San Marino 🇸🇲 , Albania 🇦🇱, north Macedonia 🇲🇰, Serbia 🇷🇸, and Bosnia 🇧🇦 within the next 2 weeks, hopefully I run into you in Europe haha.
Cool man, if you see me say hello, although I'll probably be in Greece for the next month. Sounds like a great itinerary. I still need to visit San Marino and Liechtenstein to have visited every country in Europe.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos sweet I only need 9 countries left to visit every country in Europe and I’ll be in Greece in late July early August.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Both places are well worth the visit. We went to both mostly just to finish off seeing every country in Western Europe, but they were actually very nice. Especially if you like mountains.
@@goatsahoy4449 Sweet, good to know.
off the beaten path like always...great video...love the music at 24:40
I hope you can tell us about your UK trip in an upcoming video, can’t blame you for taking time off filming but curious to know what you found here.
I think, thats a place were are building Blocks cut from Stone.thx
That would make sense.
Gabriel it is greek. Its the word ΑΚΡΟΠΟΛΙΣ(ACROPOLIS) meaning citatel.
Are you referring to Matera? Matera is not Greek, she is long time before the Greeks.

Oooh - I exclaimed a lot of oohs. Great video!

Hi Gabriel I am fanatical about your travels and the immense information you give.Looking forward to purchase your books too, as I wanna start some budget traveling soon....
Much appreciated and wishing you all the very best...Priya from London U.K.....🌼❤️🌄
Thought that area in Italy had an earthquake a few years ago. Gr8 video Gabriel.
Absolutely fascinating video. These roadtrip video's are the best!
Cool, glad to hear it.
Glad to hear you got some much needed rest! I hope you enjoyed your time in the UK!!
Thanks for sharing with us. Greetings and Blessings.
I’m sharing this with my buddy who did an archaeological excavation very close to that area a couple of years back! I’m really enjoying this video!!!
This large place with ruins half hidden by greens..You made us so curious of what it has been....Have you ever thought of being less tired of long walks to show us places that you could partly view with a drone ? If you feel confortable with buying/flying a drone, how about rising that amount with your followers ? Also you’ll may enjoy even better your travels on historical sites. Love your realistic videos, it’s always like beeing there. You do an amazing work. Thank you 😀
I stayed in a hostel in old city Taranta for one night....just picked the city off the map as a place to stay before catching a ferry to Greece at Bari. I was traveling around by train. I remember being surprised how old and unkempt the buildings were compared to what I had seen up to then in Italy....but yes, lots of character.
Cool video! I am Italian, however never been to Matera or Craco. They are not very easy to reach as there is no airport close by. Your Italian pronunciation is quite good though!🤌
Cool, thanks.
Awesome work again Gabe.. the ghost town was so clean no trash. Italy seems pretty clean also overall. Nice curious crawl thru that old town also absolutely no tourists!
you are the best utube traveler with the best taste of music 🌄
Our Gabe the Global Traveller is so kind to take time to reply to our comments, just read through and learned some interesting facts as his Subscribers are well informed, ☮️🙏🏽☮️✈️🌏☀️🌎
I could live in that town. craco looks like it use to be underwater looking out around the hills
Waw on my do list when I go back to Italy thanks for showing this side of travelling
This is super interesting! Thank you Gabriel!!!
Great video! The caves are really cool and the crypts are ruins are fascinating to see.
Amazing places in this part of the world
Hi Gabriel, I watch 100% of the video. Love your style.
Great intro segment
Beautiful video. I like it
wow Amazing.😱😱
I lived in Brindisi for 2 years. I miss south Italy so much
Great job.
NICE!!!
Italy is beautiful .... watch out for the hidden traffic cams Gabe ... n unclear parking zones ... I got so many tickets while I was there ....
great video bro
Omg! I was there in the 80s!
Cool.
Where have you been? Missed your vids. You need to start making new ones again !!
@@PJL7095 Agree. I just love his vids. Hope he starts making them again soon, but he definitely deserves a rest.
I am definitely a fan.
I'll plan to make new videos in Greece sometime soon. Thanks for watching. ✌
Have a great holiday in Greece, Gabriel ⛵🌞☀️🌻👒😊
Thanks Jenny. ✌
Gosh Gabriel how was your flight ✈️ to Greece from the U.K.? There have been chaos at airports here in the U.K. with cancellations and lack of staff
It was delayed about an hour but otherwise smooth, direct flight for $150.
Nicely video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
It's so cold in June 6 in Italy one need winter jacket and cap there, brr

Hey, Gabe! What s your favourite european country? Can you chose one? Probably people ask you this question all the time. :))
Definitely Greece, my favorite country in the world.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Really? Thank you! Going there in 3 weeks, again. I also love this country. :)
Nice. I'm back in Greece right now, videos from here coming sometime soon.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Excellent! Looking forward to it! Meantime I am watching your old videos from the places we want to see this year.
I knew Gabe would say Greece! 😉
That's Definitely a quarry at the end. 👍
I wondered where you were!
Matera was also the set of "passion of christ" by Mel Gibson (2004)
You take some awesome videos. Love them. It all seems so baron and vacant. Where are all the people? Shops? Markets?
Great
Latest James Bond movie, No Time to Die was filmed in Matera. It’s excellent! You should rent it!
Saw it, great movie, one of the best in the Bond series and one of the reasons I wanted to visit Matera.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Completely agree. Casino Royale was my favorite but now this one’s replaced it. So we’ll done !
Welcome to Taranto! The old city deserves more attention and renovation. Near the area you visited, you missed the cathedral of San Cataldo, one of the oldest churches in southern Italy. I hope you have tasted Taranto mussels, among the most famous in the world! Ciao!
whats the weather like on your greek island gabe hope the sea is crystal clear enjoy swimming
It's perfect. Sunny and warm but not too hot. A little windy so there are some choppy waves.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos nice to hear ,it must be raki time were you are enjoy and have a lovely evening
Gabe I am just back from 10 days Puglia vacation and did Matera aswell. Remember the instagtam pic I sended you a week ago? It was an amazing vacation 10 days with a car.
Yes, I do. That part of Italy is really interesting. I'll be posting another video from my road trip showing more.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Great to hear that, Take care dude looking forward for more videos. Been watching since you had a small youtube channel.
Greetings from Belgium.
Good idea to rent a car. I was trying to book carshare online, but seems impossible without Italian Codice fiscale. I only need car for hours, not days.
I hope you enjoy 🇬🇧
Yes, definitely.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos did you see the jubilee party’s
I saw some of the celebrations on the last night but didn't film anything.
Thanks 😊
I’ve been to northern Italy several times. My grandparents are from southern Italy. I really want to go there so I appreciate your video!
My great grandfather moved from a small town in southern Italy to America in around 1900.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos same, my grandfather was from Potenza, my grandmother San Massimo. As a kid he worked in Northern Africa with his brother taking care of camels.
Could it be an ancient amphitheatre
Near the end looks like a quarry to me
Modern enough for the stone to be cut straight by machine..
Right on, good to know.
Is it cold there ? You are wearing a coat! Should be warm, in Sicily where I lived I would have been swimming by now!
We need a harald/gabriel ruins collab
Where are you now?
Greek islands. 😎 See the comment I just pinned at the top.
Wow i didnt know that there was such a huge gap between when you record these videos and upload them.
Normally there isn't. See the comment I pinned at the top. This is some old footage from March that I decided to skip over at the time. Thanks for watching.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos oh haha I did not see that, thanks for your videos, ive been enjoying them since 2012!
Were you driving an electric car for your rental? Barely heard a sound. Thanks for the videos.
Nope, a regular car.
Delayed release? Weren't you there like 2 months ago?
Yes, see 0:46 in the video and the comment I pinned at the top for more info.
The sign in Taranto is Greek. It says at the top Tara’s Akropoli
Cutting limestone with wire? It's usually for centuries in Europe!
Still winter in italy?

👍👍👍
Gabe, I was hoping to see you in Bari or Alberobello. 👣
👍👍
Quarry
That makes sense. Any guess from what era, Roman or more recently?
It was worked very recently but as you saw pieces that were extremely old laying around in the scrap. It's also some stone masonry dumping ground. But not trash.
Right on, good to know.
Hallo gabriel how are u...
When ar u vissit my place again....
OK it was March!
Exactly.
It's so sad that after 11,519 views (Thursday, 09.06.22, 09:46 am) he only has got 690 likes for this video. What a lazy bunch of viewers!
You still haven't been to Australia? 👎 Hope you make it at some point! 👍
Do you have any interest in circumambulating Mount Kailash?
That would be incredible, but not really possible for an American, since it's in Tibet. I think it would be very difficult to get permission and you would need to be part of an expensive expedition.
Why are so many small Italian villages and cities basically abandon? Don't they have regional or local food, wine, crafts, manufactured goods they could sell for income/jobs? Every town is said to have its own specialties; why not capitalize on those and give the young adults some jobs and income and be able to raise families? Hard to watch these towns turn into ghost towns and not try something to reverse it.
This one was destroyed by earthquakes and landslides, so it was abandoned. I think it just depends on the village, there are various reasons. But lots of them are still occupied.
Interesting but i did not like to see old videos.. My choise..
MATER-A MEANS MOTHER 😁
Seems like I've already seen all this, I prefer recent videos rather than going back in time.
Leaving this channel. Dont know what happened, but you are rushing through every country. No local encounter or anything. Sorry. Wish you good luck! 🌸
Ohhhh..this is harsh...now, there are local encounters on Gabe's channel. And you left.
