    We visited Matera midwinter, years ago. 1970's. A cold, silent, empty place. No shops or residents. One man took us into his cave where he stored his wine. We found a lady with the key to the church in the cave. Years later we visited with a local family for a festa and it was alive again- like the video shows. A world heritage site. Recommend reading 'Christ Stopped at Eboli' by Carlo Levi.

    Great video - from "shame of Italy" to "hidden gem". Can you suggest a tour of southern Italy? We're retired, so time is only limited by our desire. Maybe we would travel for a month. Probably this fall, like September and October. We love food, history, art, walking.
    We've toured Sicily and couple times, and been to Naples, but the rest of southern Italy is unknown to us. Thanks!

    • @ItalybyItalians
      @ItalybyItalians  Год назад +10

      Hi Andrew, thank you!
      Great question, I'm happy to help. First of all, you need to know that the seaside is wonderful in many parts of South Italy so if you like the sea you must include some sea stops in your tour.
      Here some ideas:
      1) the region of Apulia on the south-west of Italy. You could stop in: Alberobello, Bari, Ostuni, Trani, Lecce, Otranto, Gallipoli, Altamura. In this tour you could include the city presented in this video, Matera, as it's on the border with Apulia;
      2) the region of Campania, of which Naples is the capital, hosts many gems: the Amalfi Coast for trekking and seaside, Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum for ancient history, Caserta Royal Palace (the largest in Europe), Volcano Vesuvius, and the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida (you'll find videos about these islands in our channel).
      3) if you'd like to see authentic Italy away from the crowds I would suggest Calabria, on the south-west, but the top attraction here is seaside. Other than that you can visit: Reggio Calabria, Gerace, Scilla.
      4) Sardinia is considered in the south of Italy so Id suggest that too. In particular I'd suggest the area around the Gulf of Orosei (find video in this channel!). Also Cagliari area and Alghero.
      Hope this helps you! Let me know what you decide!

    There was one man and one man only that's responsible for providing proper housing to thousands of Sassi cave dwellers. His name was Michele Guanti. Sig. Guanti was the most influential Senator in Rome for Basilicata. All the apartments you see in Sera Venerdi, Botiglione, Piccianelo, San Pardo, etc.. were all developed originally for the very poor Sassi dwellers. Guanti negotiated the allocation of hundreds of billions of lira in the 1960's for developing housing in Matera citta'. In fact many residents born in the Sassi from 1930 - 1960 that remained in Matera are millionaires and very well off today. Including their offspring. Many Materanni that immigrated elsewhere like America, Canada, Australia, etc. do not live as good a life as those that remained in Matera. The Sassi is a very small part of Matera citta'. If you visit other parts of the city Matera you will realize how luxurious a life the present materanni live. BTW pane di Matera is the best in the world !
