I moved to Matera in February 2020. I go jogging every day through the Sasso Barisano (the old town) and I never get tired of the astounding views. Plus, there are very few cars in that area, so it is a perfect place to walk around and take random stairs up and down :) I've been to about 30 Italian cities and before visiting Matera, Perugia was my favorite. Now it's Matera, it's just absolutely amazing. PS. The path from the Sasso Barisano to the Parco delle Murgia (the natural area) is still closed, but there are buses leaving from the city center every hour from 10am to 5pm. It takes just 30 minutes and once you're in the Parco delle Murgia, you can go all the way down where the river is and there are many paths and hidden rock churches (then you would have to, of course, go up to return the bus stop). For those traveling on a low budget, there's a hostel called Ostello dei Sassi, so there's no excuse for not visiting this city if you are in the south. The easiest way to get here is by train from Bari with a company called Ferrovie Appulo-Lucane, a local train company that travels from Bari to Matera for 5EUR (takes 2 hours). Other towns to visit close to Matera are Castelmezzano, Pietrapetrosa and Craco. Hope it helps you're planning to visit the wonderful little city!
So my husband and I are in our late 20s and took a cross country trip by rental car through Italy (Rome to Trevisio, to Tuscany, to Amalfi, to Matera and then back to Rome) of almost 2000 miles round trip! I have to say the biggest THANK YOU for showing me Matera!!! I added it to our agenda after you posted this video and it was my FAVORITE place I’ve ever travel to!! Absolutely beautiful, felt like I was see Turkey or Isreal, just amazing. Thank you both!!
Thank you! That is so cool to hear! Yeah, Matera is such a special place. It doesn't even feel like it belongs anywhere really. It is just that unique.
Hi! I am doing the transcription of this video as a homework given by my University lecturer. I come from Matera and this video makes me very happy, because I am always pleased when tourists visit my city and say all these fantastic words, like you and Sam did! I'm enjoying watching this video so much! Congratulations to both of you! I hope we can get back to travel very soon!
I remember watching this video last year and learning about Matera for the first time. Now we're one week away from flying to Bari and driving out to Matera! Super excited to see it for ourselves next week! Happy travels!

Thank you for this amazing video of Matera which I am planning to visit soon. Alberobello is on my itinerary too. I am very exited to see and explore these two destinations in Puglia which has many similarities to or I also could say that combine features of two places in Turkey, which are Cappadocia region and the city of Mardin . I would highly recommend that you visit these places if you already have not been there.

Love watching the videos, Y'all mentioned Netflix shows to recommend. We've been watching Bates Motel, very odd and strange but it keeps you coming back for more. Keep up the good work.
I love how you both run into the local cats and dogs in some of countries you visit and feed them, although I think the word is getting out among all the felines and canines, look for these Canadians, the guy is wearing a Jaipur shirt and the gal is wearing a beanie! lol
As always, loved this video guys, thank you. As you were there in winter, did you get the sense that Matera mostly shuts down in the off season, for example in November? I’d love to stay a few nights then but of course it’s always good to know if a place is seasonal or not, as it would be a shame to stay but then find attractions and cafes etc closed. You guys do a great job editing the video and choosing background music! Love the views of Matera! That was so cool when the flock of birds soared in the wind currents. I admire how you manage to keep up your level of enthusiasm in your videos. (edited to add: when you say the government relocated the people, do you know if they were compensated fair market value of their houses?)
I can try to answer that! they were basically forced out and "given" flats in the "newtown". There was a belief that the town was unhealthy and nearly impossible to do upkeep, so believe it or not, an entire townspeople were moved out without a choice in the matter. Only in recent years has there been a return and those who still had property there were able to renovate it if they wanted and return. And, I agree with you, lovely video with a lot of enthusiasm.
Loved your video on Matera and was wondering how expensive the 2 restaurants were that you ate at. We will be there in early September. Thank you, Susan
