Belgian Beer Beef Stew (Stoverij) || Student Mealz Special

  • Are you ready for another Student Mealz -- special?! We'll be making a typical Belgian dish, a real beer and beef stew! This dish is realy well known in our hometown, Ghent. It is a local specialty and is served in almost every restaurant. People here enjoy it a lot so we hope you do too! Go and spread this amazing Belgian dish among your friends!
    Ingredients
    1 large onion (€0.19~$0.25 for +/- 150gr.)
    1kg of beef (€11.00~$14.30 for 1kg)
    1 slice of white bread (€1.19~$1.54 for 1 bread) , covered with 2 tablespoons of Belgian mustard (€0.99~$1.28 for 30cl)
    3 cloves of garlic (€0.69~$0.91 for 1 ball of garlic)
    1 tablespoon of thyme (€0.99~$1.3 per pot of 6 gr.)
    2 laurel leaves (€0.02~$0.02 for 1 pack)
    1 tablespoon of flour (€1,00~$1,30 for 1 kg)
    1 bottle of dark beer (€0.80~$1.04 for 75cl)
    Beef stock (€0.35~$0.45 for 120g)
    Salt
    Pepper
    Olive oil
    Butter
    Recipe
    1. First of all season the meet with pepper and salt
    2. Take a large pot and add a fair amount of butter and a bit olive oil
    3. Once your butter has melted, add the meat
    4. Sear it shut
    5. Take it out and place it in a seperate bowl
    6. Add a large amount of butter to the large pot
    7. Add the onions
    8. Let them swett for about 30 seconds
    9. Add the meat, but make sure to leave the meat juice behind
    10. Add the flour
    11. Add the laurel leaves
    12. Add the thyme
    13. Crush the garlic
    14. Add it in there aswell
    15. Give it all a good stirr
    16. Place the piece of bread right in the middle
    17. Poor the beer in the mixture
    18. Add the meat juice you had left over
    19. Poor in the beef stock as much as you need to let the meat go below the fluid surface
    20. Wait untill it starts boiling
    21. Lower the heat and place a lid on top with a little opening
    22. Let it simmer untill the piece of bread gaines volume
    23. Give it another good stirr
    24. Place the lid on again with a little opening
    25. Let it simmer for a bout 40 minutes, the more the better!
    26. Serve with french fries and mayonaise!
