Hey Jon, super cool shop set up!!! Was great to meet and chat with you over the weekend, thanks again for the ticket code. All the best and as always thanks for sharing your videos:)
Hey. Great to meet you too, so thanks for coming to say hi at the show! Take care! 🙏👍🙌
There are a lot of folks on here every week asking you to recalibrate your definition of good enough. Ignore those people. This is your project and you get to define what good enough is. Only you know what your entry/exit points are. I appreciate you taking us along for the ride.
Thanks for the perspective. I appreciate that. I am enjoying the process but I can appreciate that others would prefer a different schedule. Haha. 😂
You are such a patient man and deserve huge credit for your perserverance. She will be a beautiful achievement when you put her in the water. All the very best from England. James
Thank you James. 🙏
Haha. I appreciate the process and enjoy the opportunity to learn new things. Thankfully we have access to a small boat close by so we can keep the sailing itch somewhat scratched as we go. 🙌
Cheers!!
Masterclass Lesson #41 covering multiple fronts. Many thanks 🙏
Haha. Cheers! 🙌
Jon hi from Calgary. Holy crap that's one skookum air system and you built it twice wow !!! . I agree totally nothing ventured nothing gained I'm positive the mold will meet your standards next time. Weather it worked or not I enjoy watching the whole process in all of your episodes. I just love the prism lights well worth the effort I say, especially when they don't leak.
Thanks for another great video.
(PS as a ret BArch won't hold the PEng choice against you 😁)
Hello! As a Vancouver native and very loyal hockey fan for
Most of my life I have no choice but to hold the Calgary Flames against you… sorry 🤷♂️. Haha.
I also REALLY considered architecture. That would have been an interesting path.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Always appreciate hearing from the people watching the videos. Cheers! 🙏🙌
the pop of the center releasing with the air blast was very satisfying. cool project, thanks!
I’ll get it in slo-mo next time. It is even more fun in person, believe me! Haha. 🙏👍🙌
Holy Smokes! That is air system is marvelous. And the shape-changing mold is brilliant.
I think it’s all going to work quite well in the end. Thanks! 🙏👍🙌
Absolutely love the ideas youre sharing! Were also working on a major refit of our 65' catamaran, and its inspiring to see others taking on similar projects. Keep the updates coming!
Thanks a lot. All the best with your project! 🙏👍🙌
@@livingforsail Always Welcome And Thanks so much for following our journey!❤️🔥❤️
@@ExtraordinaryHorizons I'll watch when I can... not a lot of time to ENJOY RUclips (you probably understand...) You're off to a good start it looks like! Keep it up!
@@livingforsail Hahaaa YES totally understand for sure, and thank you!
Nice work! I love your compressed air setup. Its much more elaborate than mine, that's for sure. Great video as always Jon!
Thank you sir! 👍🙌🙏
Your attention to detail is almost
overwhelming 😂
Great video 👍🏻👍🏻
Haha. … almost?! 😂
Appreciate the feedback. Cheers!
Love the creativity and learning! Honestly, that looks amazing!
Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback. 🙏👍
I love your videos . They are detailed and its almost like were are a part of everything. When you finally sail this thing, I will feel like part of me is there. I have to use the blue pipe system so the rust wont go thru my equipment. But most folks use the black pipe.
Thanks Gary!
A part of you WILL be on this boat!
For those reading, Gary has helped with a few metalwork projects and has been a huge help!
Thank you Gary!!
A couple suggestions. Install a fitting in the center underneath that allows you to connect to compressed air so you can easily pop off part after it cures. Use much lighter glass for first layer then add heavier glass. Maybe first paint mold with gel coat, let it get hard then add glass. I think the gel coat will help fill in corners. Vacuum bagging is good step like you did.
Thanks. I think I might try to start with something lighter. Appreciate the tips!
🙏👍
This was an epic effort. This skill will serve you well.
I enjoy learning new things. Failing in front of the growing audience… not so much but it is what it is… 🤷♂️
Thank you!
The air system rocks!
I was going to say “it blows…”
🙌🙏
Pretty cool. Iam a big fan but iam a little worried you may never launch the boat fussing over the top on every detail lol! Guess it’s good for us viewers though lol! Thanks for the videos!
A little worried? 14:23 this level of detail just starts to stress me out. 😅
he will get there details take time it is what it is its all part of the process i am almost done of mine after 6 years
I agree! The best excuse for not go sailing is being busy restoring a boat😅
Sometimes the joy comes from the journey as much as the destination.
Haha. I get that. One bite at a time… I’m having fun. 👍
Good job John. I thought with the lighter colored fiberglass near the center, I thought it might look bad when you demolded it. But that is an impressive part. Probably good enough for the boat. I think Epoxy and vacuum will make it a great win. Cant wait to see it in the boat.
Thanks. Yeah, I think it will work! 🙏👍🙌
For the lack of resin on those inside corners, here is what I'd try next... I'd squeeze a bead of thickened resin into those corners first before the glass. Then pre wet out the glass before putting it on the mold.
That could work. I think the 1200 without mat could get a bit unruly if it’s pre-wetout. It we will see. Thanks!🙏
That wasn't a fish ey, that was a pin hole in the substrate. Fish eyes show up as tapered dents down to the surface.
Maybe you have one i didnt see but a vicocity cup is a tool you should have for painting. It will tell you how truely thick your product is and how to thin or not. The finished viscosity tells you what size tip you can use for the best result.
For your air compressor, install a car muffler on the intake side either befor or after the muffler. Put it down if after filter so nothing from manufacture can enter the motor. Connect it with a rad hose to isolate noise even more.
Great videoes. Wish i was your neighbor.
Thanks! So I must have missed a small pin hole in the filler somewhere. Thankfully it fixed up ok. 👍
Good idea with the muffler. I would mind if it ran a bit quieter.
Cheers!
I appreciate the feedback as always. 🙏👍
@livingforsail the pin holes show up after the blow gun, and or washdown with solvent. We delt with them alot doing bodywork. We had a thin putty to put in them along with sand scratches.
@@scottwhite2379 I found a few and used the 3M glazing putty to fill... I must have missed a couple. I thought they might be pin holes... thanks for clarifying.
I just made a mold for small parts. I applied 2 coats do gelcoat, followed by fillets of resin thickened with silica and milled glass fiber in the tight corners, then CSM, and a few layers of 1708. The fillets allowed the cloth to conform to the more gradual curve. I only needed to make a few cycles of parts from the mold so I wasn’t worried about the durability of the fillets.
Sounds good. Thanks. Sounds like I’m on the right track. Cheers!
🙏👍🙌
Yup, chopped strand for the first layer. Then instead of the milled fibers use a piece of gun roving and push it into the corner before doing the next layer. Just dip the roving yarn into your bucket of resin and draw it between your thumb and forefinger to squeeze out the excess resin. Or you can just get a yard of woven roving and pull the yarn off. Thats what roving likes to do, youd never guess how i know that. Go with a light roving (12 oz).
Interesting idea. Would you start with 1.5oz CSM or 0.75?
Thanks for the idea.
👍
@livingforsail .75 ounce should do the trick. It's a little easier to get it around the corners.
@@mattpedersen1312 Sounds good. I may need to pick some up... I have 1.5 oz and some surface veil on site.
looks great nice job!
Thank you! Cheers! 🙏👍
I have found regular epoxy brushed on works really well. Or you could’ve thin that pain out a bit. 10:59
Thanks for the tips. 👍🙌🙏
Maybe a desiccant air drying system before the air enters the air compressor for mitigating moisture? This would benefit the air compressor's air tank, too.
Yeah, I’ve seen people plumb in a heat exchanger before the tank, after the compressor and then through a separator to reduce tank moisture. It’s a good idea but hard to find a big enough HX so that you don’t pinch the air flow capacity of the pump…
🙌
🙋 Слава Рукастым!!✊
🙌👍👆👌🙏
nice system, know it would've cost a bit more but hot dipped galvanized piping would last longer than the black steel with the same durability
Yeah, that black iron is going to start leaking in 30 or 40 years.
Yeah, it’s what I had lying around. Definitely not my first choice but it fit the budget… I only had to buy 2-3 fittings to complete it.
👍
Haha. When I’m 80 I’ll redo it in copper.
😎
I have the same prisms in my Mason 43. When you are done may pay for 2 of those? Is the perfect solution for the ever leaking problem.
If I can get the process dialed in, I’d be happy to help. Fire me an email (livingforsail(at)gmail) and we can chat about it. 👍🙏🙌
With all the money in the world, I would just work out a CAD cut file, for scheduling all cuts in all layers, and cut the cloth exactly to the interior dimensions of the prism hole on the mold with a CNC table; then vacuum infuse it with epoxy before sticking it in my vacuum drying oven. Your method seems fine though.
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. 🙏👍🙌
Just curious why you didn't gelcoat it before glassing it, general practice I thought,
That probably would have worked just fine (waxed gel coat I think)
You might be able to get away with a draft angle like you have if you're pouring metal, but a fillet produced with a spoon or a tongue depressor will probably work better.
Thanks for the feedback! 🙏👍
Did the part pop off?
@@scottcates With the little air assist it popped off really clean.
You know the logic of prisms was based on incandescent lightbulbs that had such high draw that having these prism was great but these days were 12 V systems and the risk of water ingress not sure it’s entirely worse to trouble however it is an interesting process to watch
I had prisms on my boat and really enjoyed the light they gave. Sort of a luxury item, but very nice to have.
Think coal oil lamps.
Sometimes you just do things for the feels. I think they look nice and are worth the time/effort. Give the boat character.
Yeah. I just kind of like them. The nostalgia, the light, the concept of a second chance at life…
No doubt, a led lamp is easier but so much less exciting. Haha.
I agree.
Could have 3d printed the mold and saved some time.
That would be cool. I don’t know anyone with a printer that big. Are you offering? 😎
@@livingforsail My son has several 3D printers. I will ask him. Do you have the part modeled in ON Shape?
DUDE!!! The part is real good, your boat is made of polyester resin and fiberglass, don’t waste the money on epoxy, (re: Fish Bump, Youngbarnicles) AND….. you’re doing 80% better than Leopard Catamarans….just add more layers and move on to the next one!
Haha. Thanks. I appreciate that.
🙏👍🙌
7:00 < That’s what she said 😂
Haha! How did I not catch that obvious setup?! 🤦♂️
for a cheap spray gun harbor freight is the place to go in the US . central pneumatic is usable.
Yeah. I looked at that. Only has a 1.4 tip but I’ve read some people have had success drilling it out to 2mm. … 🤔
Do you have a idea when the boat may hit the water ?
2 years…
I’ve been saying that since I bought the boat and will say that until the day we splash… 🤣
Yes, we want to know @livingforsail!!! WHEN haha
@@bridgetcongo8415 In 2 years... (been saying that for a bit...)
Duratec blows. This finish is common.
It might not have been a necessary step in the end… 🤷♂️
Seemed to work pretty well though.
Sentenced to life in leaky deck prism. 😂 Wonder if anyone’s experimented with a digital prism?
I’d love to hear more about that! 👍🙌🙏
Do you have a daily job?
I am self employed. How about you?
@@livingforsail Sure I'm a structural engineer, but right now I'm laying down almost dead because of a virus.
@@Dustmadeout I'm sorry to hear that. Take care of yourself!
Please don’t take this poorly but your attention to detail is overwhelming. If you where working for NASA I would be all for it. But you refitting an old boat and the concept of good enough might be something you want to familiarized yourself with. I am thinking of just not watching anymore because I doubt I will live long enough to see this project finished. If you were billing out your time how much you would need to charge for making this? Just the mold would be several thousand dollars. I understand you wanting to show new techniques on your channel but being a bit more realistic is likely to attract many more viewers. Anyway good luck to you.
Thanks for the feedback. Something to think about. I’m having fun but if you’re not, please don’t worry about my feelings. 🙏
there is a bit of a dark side to those prisms......
Haha. Yea, it would seem so! 👍
You're never going sailing.
Thanks for the encouragement Willard. 😂
lol
