Merchant marine is free tuition with an 8 year reserve commitment to the US Navy (although you can go active or switch from Navy to another branch). Maritime isn’t free tuition and you have no military obligation
I went to SUNY, but decided I liked the military side of it as well. Did the NROTC there and just got out after 8 years. The commitment isn’t hard, maintain your license and sail on your license and two weeks a year of active duty. My best advice is if you think you will do the NROTC anyway, then go to the Merchant Marine Academy because tuition is free and the military commitment is the same. If you’re unsure about the military commitment like I was then go to SUNY and leave your options open. SUNY cadets go out on the training ship during the summers and Kings Pointers ship out with real companies to get their sea time. Both have their pros and cons. I personally liked the teachers a lot at SUNY because most of them choose to be there. A lot of the professors are ordered to be at Kings Point because it’s a military academy.
Hey man quick question in your NROTC unit are there any cadets that struggle with the pt and if so what happens to those cadets are they kicked out the program or required to do more pt

Also ensure you are making it known you plan to be a Day Student since you have 4 years of prior service. Otherwise you'll have to go through indoc with the freshmen like I did. It's terrible!
@@jeffersonsteeleflex8178 but the academics are great, you realize we didn't know anything about ships in the Navy. I'm using the GI Bill, still have to pay for housing. And officer programs consist of ROTC, which will give you an active commission and SSO, which is an 8 year commitment in the reserves working with MSC
Good job! Just go ahead ;)
Thanks! 😃
The uniforms are just like the navy uniform I get confused
Haha yeah it is confusing. Especially when you explain that Maritime isn’t the Navy but your also in ROTC
Only chiefs and officers wear khakis
todd grant in the navy or merchant marines
@@ciaspecialactivitiesdivisi5867 in the navy
Oh yeah
They let you guys watch TV now? Man when I went (class of 07) this was a 2nd class privilege. Also, what you said about the ship being on its last leg we been saying it in our time too. I’m just glad she’s finally getting retired.
Juan Zingarello lol yeah tv is still a 2nd class privilege but everyone uses their laptops anyway so it’s basically doesn’t matter.
Seamus Graham are desktop and game consoles allowed for 4th years how strict are those policies?
When did you realize you wanted to go to a maritime academy as opposed to a "regular university"? How hard is it to be admitted?
My guy is it common for navy veterans to enroll here?
Yeah there's veterans around campus. If you enjoyed being on ships in the Navy it should be an easy transition to ship life as a civilian
I’m attending in the fall in the regiment. How’s indoc?
Carianne Sconzo for most people it will be one of the hardest things they’ve had to do, but if you can mentally prepare properly and be in good physical shape you’ll crush it. Some in with a positive mindset and do what you’re told. I’ll probably make an in depth video on indoc soon
Carianne Sconzo imma be there as a squad leader so all imma say is prepare for hell
Too bad I’m already in an other college I’d love to change schools and major
What do you guys do for fun??? I really need to know
Ok I’m very interested in this stuff so i hope you wouldn’t mimd me asking what is a cadet? Or a mug? And do you have to be there for 4 years ?
Janiya Brooks a cadet is someone in the regiment and a mug is a freshman in the regiment, a mariner under guidance
Janiya Brooks license track major is a 4 year degree, they also have 2 year license associated degrees also if your interested in that
Seamus Graham see in my head thats what I was thinking , but I really appreciate you confirming my thoughts. Would you mind if i ask a couple more questions just so I could understand just a bit more ? With all these different word use I tend to get really confused. Just tell me if Im being a burden .
Janiya Brooks your not a burden, ask any questions.
Seamus Graham okay so I want to know your opinion. Im gonna be fresh out of high school and I’m gonna be 17 . I want to be deck but I read online and I don’t really understand all that they do could you tell me ? And which do you recommend for a newcomer like me siu, msc,or Usmma ?
hi great video also im only 12 turning 13 and my dream is going to Maine maritime college
Do you have to be fresh out of high school to apply?
anyone can apply, there are a good # of transfers and ex military
U guys receive a camouflage uniform wit ur last name and u.s navy on it ?
no, im in nrotc
@@SeamusMaritime how do u receive a navy camo uniform wit u.s navy and ur last name attached to it when entering the academy ?
@@sahajkohli4305 you don't, im a midshipman in the navy. NROTC is seperate
@@SeamusMaritime can u do army rotc while attending the academy ?
@@sahajkohli4305 maybe you could commute to a school nearby if they have it
Greetings, can a (transfer student) earn a 3rd mate engine license?
yeah just apply for that program!
@@SeamusMaritime appreciate it
Do you have to be fit to join the academy?
it helps
I rlly wanna go to this school.
You really don't, SUNY is garbage. Look up maine maritime or texas a&m. A 50+ year training ship shows this
I’m definitely considering transferring here from this university in Queens. 🤔
Have any videos from SST19?
DrWHO626 check maritime_mug_memes IG tv there was a 15 minute compilation made about sea teen. I wasn’t making videos back then but I should have!! I’m goona try to vlog this sea term as much as possible so hopefully this corona virus thing ends soon so I can get vids out ASAP
@@SeamusMaritime lol the parents association is going nuts about SST 2020. Thank god im done with sea terms.
How much math do you have to do? I’m not good in math
same, an ok amount, if you can get through hs you can be a deckie, engineering is a whole nother ball game tho, you have to be pretty competent or learn fast
30 problems written out 3 times each is 90 problems. 🙂
just wondering, why do this instead of joining the navy?
both are great options. Enlisted and officer. But Maritime is for civilian sailors. You could always join ROTC because it compliments the school well though.
I want to get in so baddd
whats your sat and grades like
Cant believe the gear adrift there.
Menace to society
Is our roommates name Henry V. Freshman?
do incoming cadets have to shave they're head?
Yes
What was the indoctrination like? I’m starting in the fall!
it's a very challenging 10 days of not a lot of sleep and long days. There is a lot of pt and its not funnest place to be.
Seamus Graham any advice?
Cassandra Palumbo workout a good amount with calisthenics, respect what squad leaders say but don’t go crazy over everything, sql are all college kids too. Get ready mentally and that’s it
Seamus Graham thank you sm!
What’s your major btw?
What state is this academy in?
NY
God bless you .
This is very militarised compared to Australian maritime college lol
Yeah it be like that
Or French one😅
In our country, we have something different!
Is this a military school?
paramilitary
Would they allow diabetics?
Unsure I would think so. Not an expert on that
Alright cool, I look forward to applying in a year!
Pharaoh 3103 I’m from Maine Maritime and they do accept diabetics
8 o'clock colors
Yes sir
Well done CADET
Thanks bobby! The screw stops for none
Is it mandatory to wear a uniform in maritime??
Only if you are in the regiment
How is pt?
not bad for the regiment mug class. You do pt twice a week in the morning before the day starts. Tuesday and Thursday
I really like this school, but I haven't really seen actual women of color or students in general
Same, I literally dont know what to do, I just graduate school during quarantine and supposedly next year start marine, and like I have no idea what I'm getting into but I am been obligated by my family....
....I'm really scared, I'm moving out of my home country, my family I'm gonna be all alone in USA...
And I'm trying to find how those college are and the rules and students...and I haven't seen many woman and I dont know if is different....aGH I'm so stress, scared
@@ashcole4122 oh yea it can be stressful, but you'll be just fine.
Where're you from?
@@Andrea-tn9uk I'm from Honduras
