    Terrific video. I am from the long ago class of 1967. We graduated two months early because of the Viet Nam war. I was an engineer and because of this wonderful college I enjoyed a very good career and top positions at some very prestigious firms. For those who want to become a Maritime College student ...Go for it. It is a wonderful school, outstanding classmates, huge career potential and an experience that you will love. So many of my best friends today were classmates. Almost my entire class has conversations regularly via email. I also received my MBA from NYU but when anyone asks, the Maritime College is the education I brag about. Good luck to all.

    I graduated in 1975. The place has changed a lot; no more "Gee", no more "Pig", no more "Hap", no more "Rags", no more "Willie the Pear". Do you still call yourselves "Domers"? Do the cadets still show "Pigger on the High Seas" in secret down in the basement of the dorms? Probably not, I don't imagine they even know who "The Pig" was anymore. "Pig" was the head of the Deck Department, and "Pigger on the High Seas" was a home movie that some of the cadets shot of "Pig"wallowing around drunk in the bilges of the liberty launch in a foreign port during a cruise on the "Empty Crate IV". My class were the "Regimental Bad Examples". During our 1st Class cruise all of the Top Rates were demoted and replaced after they all got drunk in New Orleans and missed Morning Quarters on the training ship because they were sleeping it off in "Pig's" hotel room ashore. After all of those Top Rates lost their Rates for that transgression, most of the remaining Rates then resigned their Rates as well in protest. Every year the Admiral used to invite the 1st Class cadets to attend a formal Admirals Dinner dressed in "Hong-Kong Collars" (dress whites). However, the members of our class were very pointedly NOT invited to any such affair.

    • @SeamusMaritime
      @SeamusMaritime  4 года назад

      “Domers” is a fleeting term we’re more know as SUNY kids now in the industry. The school has changed a lot since you were here but I’m sure no matter what class we all have some similar sea stories from cruise. What did you end up doing after college though? I’m wondering what kinds of industries besides sailing our alumni are in.Thanks for the comment btw!

    • @SeamusMaritime
      @SeamusMaritime  4 года назад +3

      Merchant marine is free tuition with an 8 year reserve commitment to the US Navy (although you can go active or switch from Navy to another branch). Maritime isn’t free tuition and you have no military obligation

    • @drewy8788
      @drewy8788 4 года назад +3

      I went to SUNY, but decided I liked the military side of it as well. Did the NROTC there and just got out after 8 years. The commitment isn’t hard, maintain your license and sail on your license and two weeks a year of active duty. My best advice is if you think you will do the NROTC anyway, then go to the Merchant Marine Academy because tuition is free and the military commitment is the same. If you’re unsure about the military commitment like I was then go to SUNY and leave your options open. SUNY cadets go out on the training ship during the summers and Kings Pointers ship out with real companies to get their sea time. Both have their pros and cons. I personally liked the teachers a lot at SUNY because most of them choose to be there. A lot of the professors are ordered to be at Kings Point because it’s a military academy.
