    I'm doing a short speech on NROTC as a commissioning program. My audience is high school seniors. I'm more familiar with like AFROTC and ROTC, where JR year, a cadet would attend field training and then SR year they would obtain a contract and commission upon graduation. In NROTC do you refer to yourself as a cadet, or a midshipmen, or is that interchangeable? I see midshipmen on my ship sometimes and wonder at what point they are at in their college experience. Is it a JR year thing, or just a summer opportunity? Mandatory or optional?? Thanks for your video, its giving me a better idea of how to represent NROTC.

      once you take your oath after passing DoDMerb your officially a midshipman, but i'm pretty sure they just call us all midshipman anyways. I haven't heard the term cadet being used. They use that term at Maritime if you are in the regiment but it doesn't have anything to do with the navy. Midshipman do different types of summer training but for my specific program I jus have to ship out on my school ship the TSES...

    What's the financial aspect of NROTC? Like did you get a scholarship, or what?

    • @SeamusMaritime
      @SeamusMaritime  3 года назад

      some are on full tuition if you get scholarship which is competitive.... I'm in a different program.. SSMP I only get a year paid for

    Do you recommend dorming with a fellow midshipmen of not?

    • @SeamusMaritime
      @SeamusMaritime  4 года назад

      collin q it’s not a bad idea as long as you think you’ll be a good match for each other. My roommate is joining next year so our schedules will be more in line. You can both wake up together for pt and not disturb each other.

    Can you still commission without the scholarship? Are you also guaranteed active duty afterwards?

    • @SeamusMaritime
      @SeamusMaritime  3 года назад +1

      Yes and no. Not everyone gets scholarship but you can still commission. They don’t just let anyone commission tho. Needs of the navy are a factor and your performance. Odds are if you are in the unit and go through all the college program classes you will commission

    Hi, active duty navy here. Do you know anyone in your NROTC program using the STA-21 program? I'd like to work towards getting a commission but I'm not sure what to expect in terms of NSI orientation, tuition, school selection, etc.

    • @SeamusMaritime
      @SeamusMaritime  4 года назад

      Calvin Van Peterson I don’t know anyone personally but there are a decent number of STA-21 in the unit and I know it’s a minimum of 3.0 GPA while in the unit. If I find someone to help you I will, in the meantime apply for it, thanks for your service

      Calvin Van Peterson I'm a MIDN at UPenn. It's actually a 2.5 minimum GPA generally, but can be higher depending on the program you select. All of that's on the STA-21 website www.public.navy.mil/netc/nstc/sta-21/program.aspx and unfortunately I don't know any officer candidates to refer you to talk to

    • @SeamusMaritime
      @SeamusMaritime  4 года назад

      G-low for me I have classes that pertain to my commissioning, I had 1 class for the first 2 semesters I was in the unit. They weren’t that bad it’s a regular college class. Then you have lead lab every week usually Friday morning, and pt every Wednesday and Friday morning. I have one more class for my commissioning program but active duty (non reserve) people will have more classes, I think 1 every semester. If you can learn a little time management it is not hard. It doesn’t take up your entire life,

    do you have the option of doing active duty upon graduation

    • @SeamusMaritime
      @SeamusMaritime  4 года назад +1

      yest thats the active duty program. But also I can put in to go active for 5 years or so once I graduate. Its something I will consider once I get closer to graduation. Right now tho I am thinking I will do shorter billets of 30 days to 6 months or so when I am not working. Billets are cool because you can go active duty for a period of time but then go back to reserve duty.

      @SeamusMaritime  4 года назад

      @@jstoner1928 That would make sense considering the program im in now, but I heard intelligence is cool also. I like the short billet option too though becuase I could stay SSO and I wouldnt have to switch communities. Whereas if I went active I'd have to choose a new one.
