You can't have Pink Floyd without Richard Wright....who funnily enough isn't even mentioned in this video and I guarantee you'll never see them live again. Wright was almost always underappreciated and left out.
Agreed. He, more than Roger and David, gave Pink Floyd their unique sound. The switch from Hammond organ to synthesizer, starting with Dark Side, was the beginning of his eclipse, though his keyboard work is still very prominent, and important, on that album and on Wish You Were Here. After that, he begins to fade into the background, and more's the pity. Part of the problem was the new, more pop-oriented format, featuring David's soaring solos above all, which no longer allowed much room for the softly nuanced harmonies of Rick's keys. He's still there on Great Gig and Shine On, but, especially in the latter, the music drags a bit.
@@terrencesclassicrockcorner I'm not hugely passionate about anything the band did after Meddle, to be honest, though most of the albums after it still do have some very good cuts, perhaps less so Animals and The Final Cut. After WYWH, Wright's work declined precipitously, however, and even David's lack of enthusiasm is audible in many places. And while I can understand their frustration at the situation, their do-nothing passivity over so long a period makes them just as guilty as Roger for the growing bad chemistry. Nothing David and Rick did after Roger left holds any interest for me. Their ersatz Floyd albums not only lack vigour and tension, they reveal just how necessary Roger was to the band. There is no force driving the material other than the Gilmour's flaccid ego. Roger, at least, knows how to direct his formidable ego out into the world, and his solo efforts, especially Amused to Death, display all the energy lacking in David's nostalgic, sentimental fake Floyd, even if they, too, fall short of the standards set by the classic Floyd catalog.
They wrote, recorded and performed their brilliant and enduring musical works long ago. It's done, and attempting to revive their past glory is pointless.
I’d argue it’s actually GOOD that the band is done. Often times, a band revival this late tarnishes the band’s image as a whole. Sometimes it’s better to just let it be as it was.

My take on it, for what it's worth, is that there was no member of Pink Floyd, post Syd Barret and prior to 'Dark Side of the Moon', who was the 'premier' member of the band. Pink Floyd operated as a unit pretty much up until 'Echoes'. 'Dark Side was definitely the opus of Roger Waters generally, but all the band had input, especially Dave Gilmour. It was the massive success of that album, that put Roger Waters in the driving seat, as his totally amazing lyrics and melodies were pivotal to its success. Waters continued with his creative brilliance over the next few albums, culminating in the incredible "The Wall", which is their magnum opus. Pink Floyd by then, had produced some of the most brilliant and unique music in rock history! Even though I like 'The Final Cut', it was almost completely a Roger Water's album, and the input from the other members was minimal. I think, like Paul McCartney, that Roger wanted Pink Floyd to be 'his band', with the other members as back-up men. This was never going to sit right with Dave Gilmour, who was producing great albums of his own, and the idea of dropping Pink Floyd at Roger's behest was anathema to him. The new Pink Floyd, was, let's face it, The Dave Gilmour Band in essence, but that's ok, because Dave Gilmour, along with Nick Mason and Richard Wright, could still put out great stuff, as could Roger Waters. It's a pity about all the drama and legal fights, but I loved the body of work from all of them!

Already during recordings of The Wall Richard Wright was kicked out by Waters because Rick didn't like the whole project at all and Waters took it all on a personal level... hence Waters thought (and he stil does) that in fact he was Pink Floyd...

Who’s fault it is? Doesn’t matter! Do you force two kids from the playground to live next to each other because that was their dream in 4th grade? Fact is, they were uniquely gifted and produced remarkably complex music that commands the senses to stir and the mind the wander. It was almost magical and while it lasted we were in awe. The winds of change have blown . But we’re left with a memory that never fades. Enjoy it, share it, introducing my kids to them has been a great experience. BTW there’s a cover band Australian Pink Floyd that is absolutely amazing in concert. Just saw them with my son. As close as you will get to seeing the real thing. I’ll definitely be going again. They were brilliantly close to the unmatched genius of PINK FLOYD

I remember buying David Gilmour's debut solo album the day of its release. I was expecting so much more but then Gilmour was an ordinary songwriter, by his own admission, compared with Roger Waters, whose lyrics were inspirational and thought provoking. Pink Floyd members were all fine musicians but Barrett and Waters were the main creative force in the group.
I agree. Gilmour can't write to save his life, and his work without Waters is flaccid and lacks creative tension. Songs highlighting guitar solos get boring after a while.

Be that as it may, most - if not all - of PF's songs wouldn't have the same emotional impact without Gilmour's playing. Comfortably Numb, Time, or Shine on... to name a few. Lyrics wouldn't be enough to make them what they are.

In my opinion, Mr Gilmour's grudge with Mr Waters is that Mr Waters sacked Richard Wright during The Wall recordings. He even slated the poor man after he died and I don't think Mr Gilmour's wife, or Mr Gilmour will ever forgive Mr Waters for that. When they did The Wall concert back in 1979 Pink Floyd lost a hell of a lot of money and the only musician who made any money during those concert's was none other than Richard Wright, because he was hired as a session musician. And that made Mr Waters a very bitter individual...
I'd say it's almost all Polly at this point. Polly despises Roger with a rabid passion due to his politics, and David has never really ever been a particularly strong personality, he just kind of rolls with whatever the people around him are doing. He essentially replaced Roger with a female Roger, both of whom are very dominant personalities who are strongly activist in their political beliefs.

I think both Gilmour and Waters are spectacular. As far as inaccuracies, writing credits people speak of is a big one. Waters wrote tons of songs both music and lyrics. On the earlier albums (pre Darkside) they would often go off and write songs on their own an bring them back. Atom heat mother was mentioned in the thread as an album that Gilmour wrote. That isn't true. he wrote Fat old Sun (I adore the song). But he didn't just write the album. Waters wrote songs as did Wright. Where I find things to be most inaccurate is the depiction that Waters didn't write Dark Side, Wish you were here, The wall. Those were all concept albums and he was the one with the concept. He had the vision for these albums. Not only I he write songs for them but he Wass the reason this albums came into existence and lets be real, without them? We are likely not having this conversation because those are some of the most influential and spectacular albums ever. All of them were Water's visions. Gilmour's musical contribution and ability to take what might have been rough cuts and turn them into art is immeasurable and not remotely dismissed. Waters often created a skeleton and Gilmour gave it flesh, blood an movement. I think another important factor left out is the pressure they were under after the Wall. The expectation for another hit album weighed heavily on all of them but Waters in particular. This certainly took its toll on a tenuous relationship. Lastly, there is far more to each of these tiny battles between the parties. Waters has every right to be pissed that they are using the name and the music. It would be the same if after the Beatles up, Paul, Ringo and George wrote new music under that name and toured that way. It's not the Beatles anymore. Nor was it Pink Floyd anymore. For newer listeners, Waters is not even on the radar. His legacy and musical credit wave been diminished. Waters has made quite a few attempts to make amends and been instead, criticized. As an aside, people who think Gimour's solos stuff is better than Waters'? I cannot agree. Pros an Cons is spectacular. Radio Chaos is really good. Amused To death is excellent. I like Gilmour's solo stuff but it doesn't have the bite. Nor does Pink Floyd without Waters.
I love both their inputs on Pink Floyd's music, and I've seen them both live. Roger Waters is much more politically aware, as well as frustrated by it - not in the least because of his father's death in WW2 when he was really young. That is where his vitriol comes from, but he's easily intelligent enough to explain his reasons behind it too (and there's not a lot of people who can do that, sadly) David Gilmour is a truly phenomenal guitar player, and has successfully continued Pink Floyd after Roger left. And I'm sure he's a really nice and intelligent person too, from what I've seen and heard. But, David just doesn't have that same 'urge' to bring a message across in his music - lyrically it's far more 'docile'. Dreadful term, I know, but I can't think of a better one at the moment. David got fed up with Roger's constant hammering on about WW2 and political issues, and thát is something that still divides them to this day.

As someone who is Jewish and a believer in the right of the Jewish People to self determination in the land promised to them by God and Balfour, I can't morally listen to any thing by Waters. When Dark Side of the Moon was released I was just about to turn 16. I'm not going to say anything so overstated like it changed my life. I will say that I have derived more listening pleasure from that album than any other. It is, in my own personal subjective opinion, the best album ever produced. The idea that it can never be heard live again because of a disagreement is a shame. A disagreement, I would like to point out, that will be absolutely meaningless on either person's deathbed. People are as great and talented as they are because of who they are, not in spite of who they are. At least there are videos.
Your statement that “it won’t be heard live again” isn’t exactly true. There are some great tribute bands performing their music. I’m going to see a local (Wisconsin) outfit in November who are going to do all of DSOM. They did The Wall a couple of years back with full stage show - even with some of the original animation! It was amazing. Yeah, it’s not with any members of PF but I think we can compare this to how classical music is performed….definitely not with “original members”, but ultimately it’s the music that’s important, which will live on long after all of them have passed on.
And the Waters Gilmour drama saga goes on ad infinitum. Legendary stuff from a legendary group who carved out a niche no one else came close to filling.

with all that's been currently going on, and seeing all of roger's activism, i think the problem was more than just "band drama" and "creative differences"
I used to be a big fan of Waters and saw him twice but I really don't think he would have had his career without the other members of Floyd. Gilmour, on the other hand, had the looks, the voice and the talent and would have succeeded regardless.
As Jorge Luis Borges once said about the Falklands war between Argentina and the UK, Roger Waters and David Gilmour also look like "two bald men fighting for a comb".
Maybe this feud isn’t quite as it seems, remember Gilmour played as a guest on Waters ‘Wall tour’. In the end we have the music they did produce, and can still enjoy listening to it now. Same with a number of great bands from that period who either split up or sadly passed away! The music outlives everything!
I don’t want them to reunite. I love David Gilmour too much for him to have to put up with Roger’s temper and enormous ego. Best to stay separate and create music individually.

Would be nice if these narrators actually knew their subject matter. The shot of Nick Mason playing the drums (3:12) was actually Gary Wallis. Nick played a traditional drum kit post Walters as he always had. Thought Gary should get some credit. He is an amazing musician.

It's quite simple: Waters is a child throwing tantrums because Floyd survived him, and Gilmore is a gentleman and a far, far better musician and lyricist.
Firstly, Gilmour really isn't a good lyricist at all, he's just a good guitarist. Secondly, Pink Floyd just wasn't Pink Floyd *without* Waters, who was a founding member, unlike Gilmour. He admits he was wrong to try to dissolve the band, but it really wasn't quite the same band. Thirdly, Gilmour's wife's projects being on the Pink Floyd website when she's nothing to do with the band, but a founding members latest projects not being on there is simply wrong and would anger me, too. Lastly, Waters has tried to make peace twice and been snubbed by Gilmour twice, all while his wife called him nasty things publicly and (wrongly) accused him of being antisemitic. Gilmour is clearly no gentleman.

But by this time they only really had their live performances of note. Funny though how RW wanted the band to end with his leaving, but was happy they had continued without Syd all those years before.
I had listened to Pink Floyd, I had listened ( I still do ) to David Gilmour as an individual, I had listened to Roger Waters as an individual, I didn't know for a long time that they were/are in Pink Floyd, when I found out and that they have a beef found it a real shame

Roger is 80 yrs old. David is 77 yrs old. I would think they are thinking of retirement, not touring. Sorry, but come to grips with life. They are never getting back together.
David Gilmour for me is the sound of Pink Floyd. David should have received more writing credits. I believe the arrangement was who ever came up with the concept of the track would get the righting credit. Waters may have come up with many of the lyrics but David wrote most of the music and amazing guitar work.
Roger wrote most of the songs during their peak period in the 70s but it’s true there were many co-credits on the major instrumental pieces (eg Shine On & Echoes). Roger didn’t create their best albums on his own but his concepts and songs were the foundation of what made them great.
Both Gilmour and Waters wrote their own music (as did Wright), but Gilmour didn't have the knack for lyrics. Gilmour was the only real musician in PF (apart from the excellent Mason), and yet it was Barrett, then Waters who were the visionaries, despite being average musicians. Sad to say, but one visionary is worth at least a hundred good musicians. Geniuses, however, often are unsufferable beings, but for everything good, there must be sacrifices.
David was always given credit when he wrote the music. You're spreading disinformation. Look at the full Pink Floyd catalogue. With rare exception, literally ALL of their best numbers (take the early "Julia Dream," for example) were written by Waters. You seem to forget that Roger is also a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. David Gilmour is not a natural songwriter. He's just a good guitarist.

Pink Floyd is in the same place Led Zeppelin is in, Wright isn't with us anymore and neither is Bonham, so the two bands really can't ever be the same again. I think that Gilmours wife summed him up perfectly in that statement. Over the 40 odd years I've been a Floyd fan, thats exactly the impression I've developed of him. He seems a sad little man, who's opinions are far too politically driven, and therefore not shared by the three other band members. Pink Floyd are still my favourite band and one of the greatest bands that came from our country. Ok, looks like Waters was not Mr. Nice Guy. But Waters was the man who hold the project together. A band is not only about music - there is a lot of Organisation stuff to do and Waters pushed it. He was the Alpha. And the other band-members felt pushed by him. No one to blame here.

I’m a childhood friend of David and Syd And knew Roger briefly It is believed that Roger is responsible for Syd’s untimely demise into madness. Sparked on by Rogers emphatic feeding of the cause. One day hopefully this truth will be known, But I’m just an old man at the end of my life and I’ll take what I know with me. As for the guys in that band they made some amazing music. Just sad that it all fell apart.
Interesting commentary. I love Water's writing and Gilmore's epic solos. I also respect and greatly admire Waters for speaking out aggressively and consistently for Palestinian equality, freedom and justice despite the vicious harrassment and slanders he has suffered as a consequence. I think Water's compelling and insightful lyrics flow from his empathetic sense of justice and clear eyed view of the world.
Roger Waters is a strange blend of arrogant narcissism, hypocrisy and naivety, though maybe this description is overly generous. How can someone who claims to be a socialist openly support Putin. an authoritarian fascist? Does he somehow believe that because Putin leads a country which used to describe itself as "communist", that he is in some way fighting the imperialistic capitalist West? Perhaps he has a very limited understanding of politics, though his song writing suggests, or certainly used to, a profound genius at work. I saw him perform live in the late 80's and remember being shocked by his hollow claims that he was solely responsible for all the great songs Floyd ever did. Floyd were at their best on the Darkside album, and that, more than any other album, represents the height of their collaboration with all pitching in. As any real socialist should realize, collaboration rather than competition, is what makes things work best. That simple message is something he really needs to reflect on.
The band actually took David Gilmore on as their front man and leader replacing Syd, Walters was the only one against the idea and pushed hard against anything that David did or suggested, however Walters fails to recognise that David’s solos were a message to all the fans and that message still stands strong today 50+ years later. Walters thinks he created the dark side of the moon, no he didn’t he wrote the words but the platform to deliver them in a satisfactory commercial manner was the Gilmore inspiration.
Firstly, it's Waters not Walters, and also if Waters writes the song it's his song. Gilmour is just a contributing band member for that song. The guitar does not make the song, but enhances it.
In my opinion Dark Side of the Moon was a creative masterpiece to me it was the greatest Rock album of all time even against heavy hitters like Led Zeppelin lV, Jethro Tull Aqualung,The Who Tommy, Black Sabbath Paranoid and Deep Purple Machine Head and Montrose’s and Van Halen’s and. There was peace between the two from 2000-2020 as far as I’m aware, but it seems to me that the often peaceful David Gilmour casted the first stone that relit their feud with the whole Twitter debacle. Love both of them and don’t understand the hate for Roger, I always hear people who are “on David’s side” saying how terrible Roger is but never vice versa. In the end there is no one person that creates the sound of Pink Floyd, there is a reason that they are a band and not David or Roger and Co. There is no one person’s “Sound of Pink Floyd” as a matter of fact it’s all Pink Floyd.
Gilmour seems to like to play up the entire Roger is so difficult thing to his advantage. I think it just makes Gilmour look bad in a very calculating way. All his adoring fans just care about is his lead guitar playing. Not really much to base hero worship on. Roger is very fiery and isn't afraid of the public the way Gilmour has always been. Waters gets himself in hot water because of it and David seems to be exploiting that recently. Sad, but to me Gilmour is the one to watch out for. Roger makes his opinions well-known, Gilmour hides and just seems to exploit Roger's troubles for his own benefit. I have great respect for Waters, cannot say the same for Gilmour's antics. But he does play a mean guitar, no one can take that one single thing away from Davey.

I always have the impression that Gilmour has chip on his shoulder for what happened in the 80s. After Floyd’s last reunion I believe Roger said that he wouldn’t mind getting back with Pink Floyd for a bit, but David turned it down entirely. I think David likes being the sole leader of Pink Floyd.

Browse the internet and there are dozens of articles, tweets and interviews by Roger attacking and denigrating David. I've only seen one interview from David where he complained that Roger robbed him of the copyrights on Animals and The Wall. On Animals, they had an agreement that David was entitled to 1/6 for half the credits on Dogs. And at the last minute, without David's consent, Roger finished the two acoustic recordings on the album, reducing David's share to 1/10. About The Wall, David said that the songs where he was a co-writer Roger took full authorship and the songs that were completely composed by David were released by Roger as Waters-Gilmour. Without Gilmour's songs and guitar riffs and solos, The Wall would be a steamy, dry musical. So David can no longer work with someone who robbed him. And I understand that. If peace is to be made between them, Roger must acknowledge David's authorial contribution to Pink Floyd and apologize to him. And Roger will never do that.

Roger Waters was the lyric writer and David Gilmour was the musician. I think the music is better than the lyrics but the whole is greater the sum of its parts.

A band is a group effort and there’s a reason why they go by the name Pink Floyd and not David Gilmour and his drummer, keyboardist and bassist who also writes lyrics and deep minded concepts. Like look at Queen, they were all pretty talented at writing songs and at playing their respective roles but they would have disbanded if Freddie didn’t step up to be the lead singer and Freddie would have been nothing if he didn’t step up to be the lead singer. If you remove a single one of the members of Queen you immediately lose at least 2 hits.

Heck the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking Waters first post breakup album was borderline unlistenable. it was so depressing. I'll take Division Bell with songs like High Hopes and Coming Back to Life over any post-Floyd work by Waters.

Agreed. He, more than Roger and David, gave Pink Floyd their unique sound. The switch from Hammond organ to synthesizer, starting with Dark Side, was the beginning of his eclipse, though his keyboard work is still very prominent, and important, on that album and on Wish You Were Here. After that, he begins to fade into the background, and more's the pity. Part of the problem was the new, more pop-oriented format, featuring David's soaring solos above all, which no longer allowed much room for the softly nuanced harmonies of Rick's keys. He's still there on Great Gig and Shine On, but, especially in the latter, the music drags a bit.

@@terrencesclassicrockcorner I'm not hugely passionate about anything the band did after Meddle, to be honest, though most of the albums after it still do have some very good cuts, perhaps less so Animals and The Final Cut. After WYWH, Wright's work declined precipitously, however, and even David's lack of enthusiasm is audible in many places. And while I can understand their frustration at the situation, their do-nothing passivity over so long a period makes them just as guilty as Roger for the growing bad chemistry. Nothing David and Rick did after Roger left holds any interest for me. Their ersatz Floyd albums not only lack vigour and tension, they reveal just how necessary Roger was to the band. There is no force driving the material other than the Gilmour's flaccid ego. Roger, at least, knows how to direct his formidable ego out into the world, and his solo efforts, especially Amused to Death, display all the energy lacking in David's nostalgic, sentimental fake Floyd, even if they, too, fall short of the standards set by the classic Floyd catalog.
Gilmour himself said there is no Pink Floyd. I wish it weren't so but at least we can still enjoy their music.

My take on it, for what it's worth, is that there was no member of Pink Floyd, post Syd Barret and prior to 'Dark Side of the Moon', who was the 'premier' member of the band. Pink Floyd operated as a unit pretty much up until 'Echoes'. 'Dark Side was definitely the opus of Roger Waters generally, but all the band had input, especially Dave Gilmour. It was the massive success of that album, that put Roger Waters in the driving seat, as his totally amazing lyrics and melodies were pivotal to its success. Waters continued with his creative brilliance over the next few albums, culminating in the incredible "The Wall", which is their magnum opus. Pink Floyd by then, had produced some of the most brilliant and unique music in rock history! Even though I like 'The Final Cut', it was almost completely a Roger Water's album, and the input from the other members was minimal. I think, like Paul McCartney, that Roger wanted Pink Floyd to be 'his band', with the other members as back-up men. This was never going to sit right with Dave Gilmour, who was producing great albums of his own, and the idea of dropping Pink Floyd at Roger's behest was anathema to him. The new Pink Floyd, was, let's face it, The Dave Gilmour Band in essence, but that's ok, because Dave Gilmour, along with Nick Mason and Richard Wright, could still put out great stuff, as could Roger Waters. It's a pity about all the drama and legal fights, but I loved the body of work from all of them!

Who’s fault it is? Doesn’t matter! Do you force two kids from the playground to live next to each other because that was their dream in 4th grade? Fact is, they were uniquely gifted and produced remarkably complex music that commands the senses to stir and the mind the wander. It was almost magical and while it lasted we were in awe. The winds of change have blown . But we’re left with a memory that never fades. Enjoy it, share it, introducing my kids to them has been a great experience.
BTW there’s a cover band Australian Pink Floyd that is absolutely amazing in concert. Just saw them with my son. As close as you will get to seeing the real thing. I’ll definitely be going again. They were brilliantly close to the unmatched genius of

I remember buying David Gilmour's debut solo album the day of its release. I was expecting so much more but then Gilmour was an ordinary songwriter, by his own admission, compared with Roger Waters, whose lyrics were inspirational and thought provoking. Pink Floyd members were all fine musicians but Barrett and Waters were the main creative force in the group.
The group was greater than any one person. Waters' solo stuff isn't up to PF standards either.
I think the debut album from David Gilmour is great. Exceptional guitar playing and material. Play it quite a lot.

If the Gilmour Pink Floyd was playing in my city at the same time as Waters I'd go to the PINK FLOYD show to hear the man who SANG those songs and plays guitar like no other.
In fact when Pink Floyd were touring in 1988-89 Waters complained that they filled stadiums where he was playing and 3 people & a dog turned up to his show.
There are also 4-5 songs on Dark Side that he wrote lyrics for but the music was not his.

Be that as it may, most - if not all - of PF's songs wouldn't have the same emotional impact without Gilmour's playing. Comfortably Numb, Time, or Shine on... to name a few. Lyrics wouldn't be enough to make them what they are.

In my opinion, Mr Gilmour's grudge with Mr Waters is that Mr Waters sacked Richard Wright during The Wall recordings. He even slated the poor man after he died and I don't think Mr Gilmour's wife, or Mr Gilmour will ever forgive Mr Waters for that. When they did The Wall concert back in 1979 Pink Floyd lost a hell of a lot of money and the only musician who made any money during those concert's was none other than Richard Wright, because he was hired as a session musician. And that made Mr Waters a very bitter individual...
I'd say it's almost all Polly at this point. Polly despises Roger with a rabid passion due to his politics, and David has never really ever been a particularly strong personality, he just kind of rolls with whatever the people around him are doing. He essentially replaced Roger with a female Roger, both of whom are very dominant personalities who are strongly activist in their political beliefs.

I think both Gilmour and Waters are spectacular. As far as inaccuracies, writing credits people speak of is a big one. Waters wrote tons of songs both music and lyrics. On the earlier albums (pre Darkside) they would often go off and write songs on their own an bring them back. Atom heat mother was mentioned in the thread as an album that Gilmour wrote. That isn't true. he wrote Fat old Sun (I adore the song). But he didn't just write the album. Waters wrote songs as did Wright. Where I find things to be most inaccurate is the depiction that Waters didn't write Dark Side, Wish you were here, The wall. Those were all concept albums and he was the one with the concept. He had the vision for these albums. Not only I he write songs for them but he Wass the reason this albums came into existence and lets be real, without them? We are likely not having this conversation because those are some of the most influential and spectacular albums ever. All of them were Water's visions. Gilmour's musical contribution and ability to take what might have been rough cuts and turn them into art is immeasurable and not remotely dismissed. Waters often created a skeleton and Gilmour gave it flesh, blood an movement.
I think another important factor left out is the pressure they were under after the Wall. The expectation for another hit album weighed heavily on all of them but Waters in particular. This certainly took its toll on a tenuous relationship.
Lastly, there is far more to each of these tiny battles between the parties. Waters has every right to be pissed that they are using the name and the music. It would be the same if after the Beatles up, Paul, Ringo and George wrote new music under that name and toured that way. It's not the Beatles anymore. Nor was it Pink Floyd anymore. For newer listeners, Waters is not even on the radar. His legacy and musical credit wave been diminished. Waters has made quite a few attempts to make amends and been instead, criticized.
As an aside, people who think Gimour's solos stuff is better than Waters'? I cannot agree. Pros an Cons is spectacular. Radio Chaos is really good. Amused To death is excellent. I like Gilmour's solo stuff but it doesn't have the bite. Nor does Pink Floyd without Waters.

Roger Waters is much more politically aware, as well as frustrated by it - not in the least because of his father's death in WW2 when he was really young. That is where his vitriol comes from, but he's easily intelligent enough to explain his reasons behind it too (and there's not a lot of people who can do that, sadly)
David Gilmour is a truly phenomenal guitar player, and has successfully continued Pink Floyd after Roger left.
And I'm sure he's a really nice and intelligent person too, from what I've seen and heard.
But, David just doesn't have that same 'urge' to bring a message across in his music - lyrically it's far more 'docile'. Dreadful term, I know, but I can't think of a better one at the moment.
David got fed up with Roger's constant hammering on about WW2 and political issues, and thát is something that still divides them to this day.

As someone who is Jewish and a believer in the right of the Jewish People to self determination in the land promised to them by God and Balfour, I can't morally listen to any thing by Waters. To me, Waters music is like listening to Nazi marching songs. That said, I admire Gilmour who has called Waters out for what he is. I despise Waters in the same way as I despise WW2 Nazis.
I think we need to stop hoping for another reunion and just appreciate what the Floyd has done over the years. I think we’ll maybe, just maybe have a reconciliation between Roger and David at best.

When Dark Side of the Moon was released I was just about to turn 16. I'm not going to say anything so overstated like it changed my life. I will say that I have derived more listening pleasure from that album than any other. It is, in my own personal subjective opinion, the best album ever produced. The idea that it can never be heard live again because of a disagreement is a shame. A disagreement, I would like to point out, that will be absolutely meaningless on either person's deathbed. People are as great and talented as they are because of who they are, not in spite of who they are. At least there are videos.

Your statement that “it won’t be heard live again” isn’t exactly true. There are some great tribute bands performing their music. I’m going to see a local (Wisconsin) outfit in November who are going to do all of DSOM. They did The Wall a couple of years back with full stage show - even with some of the original animation! It was amazing. Yeah, it’s not with any members of PF but I think we can compare this to how classical music is performed….definitely not with “original members”, but ultimately it’s the music that’s important, which will live on long after all of them have passed on.

I used to be a big fan of Waters and saw him twice but I really don't think he would have had his career without the other members of Floyd. Gilmour, on the other hand, had the looks, the voice and the talent and would have succeeded regardless.

There was NO reunited Pink Floyd in 2008. Gilmour went up to performing ONLY on "Comfortable Numb" and that was it.

Maybe this feud isn’t quite as it seems, remember Gilmour played as a guest on Waters ‘Wall tour’. In the end we have the music they did produce, and can still enjoy listening to it now. Same with a number of great bands from that period who either split up or sadly passed away! The music outlives everything!

Would be nice if these narrators actually knew their subject matter. The shot of Nick Mason playing the drums (3:12) was actually Gary Wallis. Nick played a traditional drum kit post Walters as he always had. Thought Gary should get some credit. He is an amazing musician.

It's quite simple: Waters is a child throwing tantrums because Floyd survived him, and Gilmore is a gentleman and a far, far better musician and lyricist.
Firstly, Gilmour really isn't a good lyricist at all, he's just a good guitarist. Secondly, Pink Floyd just wasn't Pink Floyd *without* Waters, who was a founding member, unlike Gilmour. He admits he was wrong to try to dissolve the band, but it really wasn't quite the same band. Thirdly, Gilmour's wife's projects being on the Pink Floyd website when she's nothing to do with the band, but a founding members latest projects not being on there is simply wrong and would anger me, too. Lastly, Waters has tried to make peace twice and been snubbed by Gilmour twice, all while his wife called him nasty things publicly and (wrongly) accused him of being antisemitic. Gilmour is clearly no gentleman.

2 bald men fighting over a comb. PF ran out of creative steam in the 80s and their bassist left. In his arrogance he thought the band should disband, but the rest of the boys carried on a bit. But by this time they only really had their live performances of note. Funny though how RW wanted the band to end with his leaving, but was happy they had continued without Syd all those years before.

David Gilmour for me is the sound of Pink Floyd. David should have received more writing credits. I believe the arrangement was who ever came up with the concept of the track would get the righting credit. Waters may have come up with many of the lyrics but David wrote most of the music and amazing guitar work.
Lyric credits are not the same thing as composer credits - which David Gilmour has almost always been credited for.
Roger wrote most of the songs during their peak period in the 70s but it’s true there were many co-credits on the major instrumental pieces (eg Shine On & Echoes). Roger didn’t create their best albums on his own but his concepts and songs were the foundation of what made them great.
I would have to agree. I have seen them 4 times, and I couldn't picture the band without Gilmore.
Both Gilmour and Waters wrote their own music (as did Wright), but Gilmour didn't have the knack for lyrics. Gilmour was the only real musician in PF (apart from the excellent Mason), and yet it was Barrett, then Waters who were the visionaries, despite being average musicians. Sad to say, but one visionary is worth at least a hundred good musicians. Geniuses, however, often are unsufferable beings, but for everything good, there must be sacrifices.
David was always given credit when he wrote the music. You're spreading disinformation. Look at the full Pink Floyd catalogue. With rare exception, literally ALL of their best numbers (take the early "Julia Dream," for example) were written by Waters. You seem to forget that Roger is also a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. David Gilmour is not a natural songwriter. He's just a good guitarist.

Interesting commentary. I love Water's writing and Gilmore's epic solos. I also respect and greatly admire Waters for speaking out aggressively and consistently for Palestinian equality, freedom and justice despite the vicious harrassment and slanders he has suffered as a consequence. I think Water's compelling and insightful lyrics flow from his empathetic sense of justice and clear eyed view of the world.

Roger Waters is a strange blend of arrogant narcissism, hypocrisy and naivety, though maybe this description is overly generous. How can someone who claims to be a socialist openly support Putin. an authoritarian fascist? Does he somehow believe that because Putin leads a country which used to describe itself as "communist", that he is in some way fighting the imperialistic capitalist West? Perhaps he has a very limited understanding of politics, though his song writing suggests, or certainly used to, a profound genius at work. I saw him perform live in the late 80's and remember being shocked by his hollow claims that he was solely responsible for all the great songs Floyd ever did. Floyd were at their best on the Darkside album, and that, more than any other album, represents the height of their collaboration with all pitching in. As any real socialist should realize, collaboration rather than competition, is what makes things work best. That simple message is something he really needs to reflect on.
The band actually took David Gilmore on as their front man and leader replacing Syd, Walters was the only one against the idea and pushed hard against anything that David did or suggested, however Walters fails to recognise that David’s solos were a message to all the fans and that message still stands strong today 50+ years later. Walters thinks he created the dark side of the moon, no he didn’t he wrote the words but the platform to deliver them in a satisfactory commercial manner was the Gilmore inspiration.

There was peace between the two from 2000-2020 as far as I’m aware, but it seems to me that the often peaceful David Gilmour casted the first stone that relit their feud with the whole Twitter debacle. Love both of them and don’t understand the hate for Roger, I always hear people who are “on David’s side” saying how terrible Roger is but never vice versa. In the end there is no one person that creates the sound of Pink Floyd, there is a reason that they are a band and not David or Roger and Co.
There is no one person’s “Sound of Pink Floyd” as a matter of fact it’s all Pink Floyd.
Gilmour seems to like to play up the entire Roger is so difficult thing to his advantage. I think it just makes Gilmour look bad in a very calculating way. All his adoring fans just care about is his lead guitar playing. Not really much to base hero worship on. Roger is very fiery and isn't afraid of the public the way Gilmour has always been. Waters gets himself in hot water because of it and David seems to be exploiting that recently. Sad, but to me Gilmour is the one to watch out for. Roger makes his opinions well-known, Gilmour hides and just seems to exploit Roger's troubles for his own benefit. I have great respect for Waters, cannot say the same for Gilmour's antics. But he does play a mean guitar, no one can take that one single thing away from Davey.

I always have the impression that Gilmour has chip on his shoulder for what happened in the 80s. After Floyd’s last reunion I believe Roger said that he wouldn’t mind getting back with Pink Floyd for a bit, but David turned it down entirely. I think David likes being the sole leader of Pink Floyd.
Without Gilmour's guitar there never was a PF. Waters alone is nothing but a bass player who wrote a few clever lyrics over 40 years ago.

I've only seen one interview from David where he complained that Roger robbed him of the copyrights on Animals and The Wall.
On Animals, they had an agreement that David was entitled to 1/6 for half the credits on Dogs. And at the last minute, without David's consent, Roger finished the two acoustic recordings on the album, reducing David's share to 1/10.
About The Wall, David said that the songs where he was a co-writer Roger took full authorship and the songs that were completely composed by David were released by Roger as Waters-Gilmour. Without Gilmour's songs and guitar riffs and solos, The Wall would be a steamy, dry musical.
So David can no longer work with someone who robbed him. And I understand that.
If peace is to be made between them, Roger must acknowledge David's authorial contribution to Pink Floyd and apologize to him. And Roger will never do that.

Roger Waters was the lyric writer and David Gilmour was the musician. I think the music is better than the lyrics but the whole is greater the sum of its parts.
Gilmour is pink floyd. Thanks for the cool poetry Roger but we love the music and David's vocals better. If it wasn't for David we'd never have heard of Pink floyd it would have been over after Sid.
And if it wasn’t for Roger, Rick or even Nick we wouldn’t have heard of them either. A band is a group effort and there’s a reason why they go by the name Pink Floyd and not David Gilmour and his drummer, keyboardist and bassist who also writes lyrics and deep minded concepts. Like look at Queen, they were all pretty talented at writing songs and at playing their respective roles but they would have disbanded if Freddie didn’t step up to be the lead singer and Freddie would have been nothing if he didn’t step up to be the lead singer. If you remove a single one of the members of Queen you immediately lose at least 2 hits.
That's probably why it became hardly interesting pop crap after Waters left. Anyone with a pair of ears will tell you that. People are just upset Waters is left leaning and ati establishment, and go on defending Gilmour's failed second solo ,miserable albums atempts, purely out of political spite.
@@DiogoRibeiro one reason I believe Pink Floyd post Roger is just fake Floyd isn’t because of any one person, but rather the lack of plausible, personal and relatable/understandable concept such as Dark Side, The Wall, Animals, Wish You Were Here and literally everything they did in the 70s. I believe that David unfortunately thinks that he can plays solos over drums and keyboard synths and call it Pink Floyd. My point is that it lacks Pink Floyd magic where there were meaning to the music.
@@DiogoRibeiro Waters stopped being left leaning a long time age. Calling him liberal is not quite right. He is liberal with quite a bit of crazy. He is definitely not a fan of the Ukraine something that doesn't match up with liberal cred and he seems to have much more anger at Democratic country leaders rather than dictators like China Russia and the Arab countries of the Middle East. He was very liberal long ago but now it just seems to be constant anger at everyone.
@@splitzerx570 If you've seen the Pulse shows I find it hard to believe you think that doesn't sound like Floyd. I saw that tour as well as Waters solo tour with Clapton and his band and the 94 tour was Floyd i Waters solo shows were not in my opinion. The truth is Gilmours writing after the breakup (Division Bell, solo albums) has been at least as good as Waters post breakup work. Heck the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking Waters first post breakup album was borderline unlistenable. it was so depressing. I'll take Division Bell with songs like High Hopes and Coming Back to Life over any post-Floyd work by Waters.

HOWEVER, A MORE ADULT SOLUTION SHOULD BE TO ACCEPT ONE ANOTHER IF BOTH WILL SMOOTH OUT THEIR ROUGH EDGES THAT STARTED THE ABRASION. I'VE LATELY COME TO APPRECIATE THE INCREDIBLE LYRICAL DEPTH OF THE EARLY 70S ALBUMS.
Like a viewer below say No Rock Wright NO Pink Floyd! Sure Jon Carin is brilliant but he's not a founder member and Rick always added the perfect keyboard part for every Floyd song he played on!
Gilmore wasn't an original member. Just sayin. Waters pretty much wrote all the best songs post Syd
