2:12:40 Disagree. It doesnt feel like a sacrifice because there was nothing to sacrifice. She sacrificed the love of the villagers in the live action? They literally despised a child for not resisting against superhuman creatures who have murdered her mother. They never truly loved her, they were just randos. In the anime, it puts into perspective what Nami is fighting for. People who legitimately loved her and deserve to be saved.

  • @ToothofaShark
    @ToothofaShark Год назад +85

The village knowing but not telling her was to help keep a gap between them and Nami. Despite them seeing the whole "buying the village" plan as their last hope for freedom, they wanted leave the option open for Nami to quit and live her life if she chose to. Genzo said that if they told her sooner, then they would be putting even more weight and guilt on her. They wanted her free even if they will never be. But, once the money was stolen, all hope was lost. Once it was clear that Arlong will never let them be free, they decide (not exactly to help Nami) to at least die standing up against Arlong and still telling Nami to leave the island and live her life. Them never knowing is fine, but this adds a lot more layers to the story and isn't writing that makes things "easy", it makes the characters and the story a little more complex.

All the little changes the live action made that distanced Nojiko, Genzo, and the village from the story were by far the changes I disliked the most in the live action. It doesn't break the story or anything, the narrative still holds together with the villagers not knowing but it reduces the impact so much.
Nojiko's tattoos don't mean anything, Genzo is no longer a father figure to Nami and the pinwheel Genzo wears no longer means anything and Nami's tattoo now only refers to Bellemere and not to Genzo, the fishmen finding Bellemere's house is no longer caused by the argument Nami had with her making it less tragic, there no longer any attempt by the village to save the girls or Bellemere, and I can honestly keep going with all the various ways these changes reduced the value of the characters and their emotional impact on the story.
I'm fine with most of the changes made to the live action both for the reasons of abridging and saving budget for other things but I really feel that Arlong Park is Oda's most tightly written arc, others are better overall, but it fits together so perfectly that any missing piece becomes a glaring omission.
That said going forward while there are quite a few arcs I think are overall better than Arlong Park I don't think any going forward are quite so tightly written as this one, so I have some confidence in the writing team going forward.

In defence of Pearl, you guy keep insisting that he's just there to create fire and atmosphere- but his main function is for Gin. If you don't see Gin smash though Pearl's shield in one hit, then you don't really feel the weight and danger behind him when Sanji fights Gin. Pearl also gets sacrificed to give us a sense of Gin's inner conflict, simultaneously wanting to save Sanji but also retain his loyalty to Krieg. If you don't have Pearl, then you lose a surprising amount. He's not Oda's greatest character, but these wacky minor villains are usually made as building blocks for more major characters during an arc.

It's so interesting seeing your perspective by watching the live action version before the anime version, because it is so different from the perspective of a lot of us longtime fans, like you guys enjoyed the addition of Garp and his storyline with Koby in the series. This is something that at first made everyone very excited because it did - and makes - sense that they have more screen time considering the future of the story, but in the end it was something that became an almost unanimous complaint of the hardcore Fandom for how these characters interacted and were placed at some points and also for the screen time they had, leaving important points of the main characters outside over this new storyline.
All of this makes me curious to see what you' ll think of their storyline in the anime, since although I liked the live action version I still prefer the original story, seeing your opinions and tastes in each character its so much fun.
PS: Usopp is my favorite character in the anime so I have a greater criticism of how they chose to represent his story in the LA, since he isn't a character that most people put as favorite, and many even hate that he is not as strong and brave as the other members of the crew, I had the hope that his moments of fear and bravery would be placed well beyond the right times during the series and its something I personally hope that happens in the future.
For me Usopp is an essential character in the story, being the most human and comparable to the reality of the people who watch it. Most people would feel like him in a world like the One Piece world having no powers. He is someone who has not eaten magic fruit, does not have a superhuman force, was not trained with swords or kicking or lived his life stealing from pirates, he is someone who lived in a quiet small village his entire life, without training, just knowing that his father was and is a pirate, he's a boy with a DREAM but without any plot convenience resource to make him achieve it until meeting luffy and the others, his dream is to get what they already have, to have the courage to do what they do, and it's something I can personally put my shoes in, with my fears and barriers that I have to face to achieve what I want, so I thought the live action ended up missing a great opportunity to show this to those who watch.
Sorry for the long text, and my bad english, I'm a new subscriber from Brazil, I'm loving your reactions, I hope you guys enjoy this long ride S2 S2

in regards to nami and the village in the anime specifically i think it ultiamtely comes down to the arc being about nami BELIEVING she had lost everything, that she cut tis with everything she wanted or cared about in service of a greater goal and beleiving she HAD to work alone...and then the story going "NO. You were NEVER alone, you don't have to do ANTYHING by yourself."
I can see how one could prefer the live aciton change of the villagers not knowing, but havingthem now adds so much to how much the village as a whole loves her and what they're willing to do for her sake. It also helps give her the courage to leave, because she can go without thinking she HAS to protect the village by herself, she CAN go and chase her dreams and live for herself.
Her asking luffy for help has NOTHING to do with her feeling alone, its tied to her realising she CAN'T do anything herself. She CAN'T convince the villagers to just be patient. She CAN'T just trust Arlong. She can't just tell luffy to go away because she is POWERLESS and she needs to ask for help because she jsut can't burden herself lie this anymore.
It's about nami learning to trust in others and being able to rely on other people.

The one piece being the friends we made along the way just doesn’t work narratively. Gold Roger was given the title of pirate king in part because he obtained the one piece. Gold roger also indicated the one piece being in the grand line so it doesn’t make sense to be talking about friendship. Then you have oda saying it’s not friendship which it the biggest indicator of it not being about the friends made. Also I think oda is smart enough to realize people will turn on him and op if the one piece is about friendship. You don’t create one of the biggest mysteries in animanga history just to be like it was the friends we made.

According to Oda One Piece was supposed to only last for 5 years and Luffy was supposed to have assembled an entire crew after 150 chapters. When it became more popular it allowed Oda to expand the story and introdcue more characters, plot points and arcs.
Fun Fact: The Seven warlords weren't supposed to be a thing, Romance Dawn was the orginal name of the manga before OnePiece, the Marines were supposed to be more evil and act like gangsters, Zoro was supposed to be one of Buggy's henchmen, Usopp was supposed to be vice captain, Sanji was originally called Naruto, and Hatchan was supposed to be a girl. Also, Oda wrote 2 One-Shots for One Piece before the manga and had two versions of Luffy's backstory. One in wich Shanks saves Luffy and gives him the Straw hat and the other one in which Garp was supposed to be a pirate and give Luffy the Straw hat.

Its WAY more believable that they would know, it makes really no sense for them all to just accept little child Nami turned evil

  • @anotherpawn
    @anotherpawn Год назад +64

    NO SPOILERS:
I'd actually argue that Don Krieg is super important, not particularly because of his story, but because Gin and how he contrasts with Sanji. In the live action, Sanji is sort of just a cool dude who tells them his backstory, while in the anime we get to see his values about feeding an enemy be tested in real time and his defining personality trait (his kindness) is showcased in a much more thorough way. It says way more about his extreme type of selflessness which is the driving thing about his character, where the conflict isn't relevant to him in the live action and the arc is more about Nami, Zoro, and Luffy than him. Him being freed by his imaginary shackles from seeing Luffy and Zoro pursuing their dreams and by seeing how Gin's lojality to Krieg is a prison is way more apparent in the anime whereas the live action just has him change his mind because we need him to join the crew.
Same with Usopp. The kids aren't important characters and some of the fluff isn't that important either. However, both of these aspects say a lot about him as a character and gives his storyline more weight whereas putting that focus on Kaya (who might aswell be a one-off character like the town mayor in orange town) and Nami takes away his depth. It takes away from HIS story and HIS character which the arc is supposed to be about. In the anime people either hate or love Usopp, but in the live action I see most people being very neutral on him, which I think is a shame since he's supposed to be one of the five main characters.
TLDR; I hope Zoro and Nami take a backseat in season 2, because Usopp and Sanji might aswell be side characters in the live-action (it's obviously a consequence of the format, but it's still something that I think the anime does way better).
Luffy is also way more generic in the live action. He's sort of just a good dude, while the anime showcases his unique character way more (not listening to backstories, "forcing" Zoro and Sanji to join him, and not being worried or thinking about the consequences). Him being powerful also sort of extends the idea that he's a force of nature, while the live action version is more of a generic shonen protagonist who powers up when things are tough. And Garp...don't get me started on Garp, can't say much, but the change in his character was easily the biggest mistake in this adaptation and Oda has even said that it was the one change that he didn't want to go along with.
I also way prefer the Nami thing in the anime because she's not a sacrifice but a victim. Anime Arlong forces her into slavery and brands her, while the Netflix version has her give herself up and join him on her own. Which is a huge difference that I can't say more about.
The live-action is still really good, but I feel like it's held back by the format in some ways that the anime just isn't. It might be tighter, but it loses a lot of depth along the way as a consequence of being an adaptation. Sure, these changes cuts the fat and improves the pacing, but as AP Canavan (professor in fantasy literature and developmental editor) once said, not everything needs to be extremely relevant to the immediate storyline, some aspects can just exists to develop a theme or showcase an idea that the reader wouldn't have got to experience if you cut it out and only focused on getting from point A to B.
There are things that the anime does better like killing of characters, more foreshadowing to future developments, Kaya being a deeper characters, some of the locations being more creative, and the romance aspect actually being explored, but overall I maintain that the source material is the definitive version.
Anyway, thank you for reading my take! Love the content keep up the good work. Btw, Oda is a planner. Like he had plans for characters and storylines back then that only are happening now 20 years later. He has some improv, but most of it is planned and he tends to have very detailed ideas for a lot of characters (even if he adapts them to fit future stories.

I've been enjoying watching more book reviewers and English professors get into One Piece precisely because of this. A lot of manga-only readers compare One Piece to the action-style of the iconic manga (like Dragonball, etc) and so find it lacking.
But One Piece is an Epic, it should be compared to LotR, the Oddessy/Illiad, Paradise Lost and that ilk. Every story has a theme, every literary choice has a purpose. Even something as simple as placing a straw hat on a young boy, framed in the same way as to mimic coronating a young king, is this layered and nuanced thing that follows through the whole story.
It's not perfect, but neither are the classics, but there are definitely people out there missing just how amazing it truly is for want of anything similar to compare it to.

In usopp town, there is a big liar and a small liar, and the small liar lie to protect others, the big liar lie to protect himself. They fight because they need to continue their lies. In baratie, everything is bulit by lacking of food, which is very realistic in ocean. All this arc are all bulit by different topic, and all of the topic lost in the live action. It's also important to note that Oda has had the ending planned out since before One Piece was even written. Which is another difference between him & the author of Naruto. One Piece is a lot more thoroughly planned and every character serves a purpose. Although he does leave room for him to add new things to the story along the way so that his writing never gets boring. I'd say One Piece is about 95% planned and 5% improvised.

Also the Super Novas were improvised by Oda right before Sabaody, so everything with them only could have been planned from this point on. Oda is still human, he cant plan an entire series that will publish over 30 years. But he is sklilled at making things go the right direction beetween the corner stones of the story he already had in mind ages ago.

It's just interesting to hear your current opinions from your perspective after only 50-60 episodes. Would be unfair trying to argue some topics here. But still something I'd like to add: Oda sensei and his editors did their job more than anyone could, clear facts. His not Shakespeare but he's already up there - top10 bestsellers authors records. He already worked as an assistant on Rurouni Kenshin, and already had another one-shot story. Then, One piece - is about MC sailing on dangerous ocean to become Pirate King. It makes sense why Luffy's strong from the beginning, logically. It's not time thing. DB, Naruto, Bleach etc chose other path without clear endpoint leaving room for infinite power-ups and trainings.
LA did homework so poor by some reasons: 1st episode - Luffy's backstory with Shanks. He taught him not to fight for no reason, then we see Zoro beating Helmeppo (why they gave him Smoker's moment?) and all other marines for no reason (bad guy just yelled at girl bumping with food...) - Luffy's excited watching this.... 2. Changing Luffy's personality and his thoughts about pirates "good pirates/bad pirates", lecturing other people, not to listen to their own mentors - seiously??? 3. Other characters also so dumb starting with Garp from the very beginning, ending with Nami's hometown villagers.... 4. Losing the main theme about fate and each person's will - this conversation comes after hundreds episodes later

i think when it comes to naruto all the important fights are serious and all the powers are jsut explained by "oh that was his special ninja magic". meanwhile ine one piece even the serious fights will have comedic and cartoony elements to them so they aren't 100% super serious all the time and sometimes a dude can jsut be a hypnotist without it beign some huge deal with a massive backtory or explanation behind his power it's a thing he can DO. THe figths in one peice feel more inventive and fun and less restricted, in my opinion. SO very different approaches but those differences do affect how much you'll like one or the other.

thats what it feels like to us as well
there are ups and downs to either approach, but what I like about this in comparison to naruto, is that because its not taking itself as serious, when things turn out silly and anticlimactic, it can be for a funny joke. But in naruto, when Kishimoto changes his mind mid fight, or encounters some problem with the logic, he has to break the fight in order to keep the story going, and it can mess with the continuity and the logic of the power systems.
If someone does something like that in one piece, its just fun and silly so its not as big a deal

Here is the main difference of Live action to Anime for me:
In the Live action, all of the characters and villains targeted Luffy. It makes the world feels small. Also they are all going for the One Piece.
In the anime, the villains are doing their own things and Luffy just happened to be there and make chaos of things for the villains.
Like, Arlong and his crew is said to be from the grandline, in the Live Action, why would they target Luffy for a map from the grandline? He can just have Nami draw a map for him if he brings Nami there or he has Nezumi from the marines, he can just pay him if he wants a map for the grandline.
The point here is, Arlong did not want to go to the grandline and find the One piece, he just want to dominate humans. He is a racial supremacist. What he wants is to conquer the whole east blue.
For Buggy, he just want treasures in general. Not particularly One Piece. But only those easy to get treasures, he did not intend to go the whole grandline to find 1 treasure.
In one piece, pirates have different dreams, motives and reason for going to the grandline. And that make the world of it bigger. The world is not revolving around the Strawhat crew and Luffy.

Its natural to compare to what you know. Manga readers compared it to the manga, LA viewers compare it to the LA. When the new anime releases, I'll be comparing it to all of the above.
I apologize for those fans, or if I came off combative/defensive with my comment. From my experience from within the fan base, I would say the numbers are closer to 90% liked it for what it is, yes we can see the flaws, but it was great. 8% of fans wanted it more 1:1 and have issue with that, but are fine with it as a gateway. 2% of fans outright dislike it, or LA anime in general.
Im basing my statistics off of like ratios on positive vs negative posts/comments about the LA within the same fan group. It's still obviously not entirely accurate, but I would say it's closer to the reality of what the general consensus is.
Either way, keep enjoying your journey. You have an amazing ride ahead of you still, the story just started and you finished the prologue(east blue). I would also suggest the LA before the anime or manga to a newcomer, every single time, to test the waters(until the new anime drops). It is the absolute best way to get your foot in the door.
But I also truly feel it captured everything it needed to capture to represent one piece. The tone, vibe, heart, etc was all there. Fights could be better, but yyh LA gives me hope for s2. The idea that we would be confused enough to believe that the LA came first is beyond idiotic. And if you want to talk about bad faith, you should start there.
We always talk about the live action simply because we are giving critiques from our perspective, and we constantly restate it so that people like you can take our opinions for what they are worth. You can take them as seriously as you want, but our perspective I think I s more interesting than most if you view it honestly, because we're not just people who have come from the Live action first, but we're very critical and are very familiar with anime and manga storytelling compared to many other new reactors who have joined the One Piece Journey. We're not "special" necessarily, but we offer a unique viewpoint because of our background. That viewpoint is what makes us different than other reactors and why our videos stand on their own.

And you don't have to care, it's fine if you don't,

I genuinely don’t see how they could choreograph any sort of extended fight scene with a guy using a sword in his mouth in a live action setting.
Like not only would it be difficult to make it look like an actually effective fighting style, not only would it destroy Mackenyu’s beautiful chiseled jaw, it would also just severely limit the movement of the two swords he already has.
I’m already impressed with the two brief instances of three sword style managing to make it look almost like a decently effective fighting style.
Also, I do like the little detail in the Mihawk fight where Zoro only pulls out his third sword when Mihawk pulls out Yoru. Almost like he isn’t willing to go all out until Mihawk is willing to go all out.

Nobody believes the one piece is something like jewels or a weapon or anything. There are many theories that are spoilery so I won’t really say them but they’re all something along the lines of history, a logbook, rogers personal treasure (like luffys hat equivalent). Another theory is that it is an action that needs to be taken that creates or brings forth the one piece like destroying something, revealing something, connecting something, etc.

2:19:48 to be completely honest, if they really wanted to go with this perspective, Nami should have not told Nojiko even still. Then she really would have had nothing. The villagers and Nojiko would then need to attempt to riot on arlong park, where they overhear arlong confront her about their deal. Having them find out about it at that point would be way stronger of a scene than the one we got.
Personally I prefer the anime, because Nami *is* sacrificing everything and everyone to save everyone, at least she believes it. I genuinely love the fact that the villagers knew so that she wouldn’t feel pressured to stay on their behalf. I especially love that Nojiko got her tattoo as a sign of solidarity with her sister. In the live action, she should have gotten it afterwords, in solidarity.

Nami didn't choose to become a pirate. She was kidnapped and branded/tattooed. Arlong only made the deal to give her hope and keep her motivated and that's it.
The village knowing about it makes way more sense than taking them 8 years to put it together. I'm also a little annoyed that they buried Bellemere in the orchard.

What I think it’s really interesting/funny is that often in one piece, things that look really silly end up being this very serious plot-changing thing and things that look very serious end up being very silly inconsequential things . And it has a tone that allows that in a way that it feels completely natural to the story, ends up being pretty funny and keeps you on your toes with the mystery.

One Piece is an excelent show to watch for the first time, but it gets better when you rewatch it knowing what's gonna happen in the future. You can have a demonstration of this feeling by watching the Live Action for the first time, and then you come to watch the anime and understands exactly why Nami despises pirates, for example. One Piece is so well written that you'll see why Arlong hates humans, or why Shanks was at Luffy's village, how Sanji ended up working at Baratie as a child and etc. The story is alive and everything connects at some point.

I find so weird how yo guys be understimating how deep a long & popular show with an enormous fanbase like One Piece can be! I mean it's okay to enter with midium expectations. it's accually a good thing, as it increases the level of surprise BUT you make way too much interpretations based on the tiny portion of story you've consumed, which makes One Piece sounds like a basic show and that's kinda annoying for viewers who knows the greatness of One Piece.
. NOT TRYNNA BE TOXIC THO I REALLY ENJOY YOUR REACTIONS & ANALYSES, so I advise you to be more patient, expand your vision for this long and beatiful story

I get that some people are annoyed, but we’re being as unbiased as we can and just taking things as they come. I’m sure everything seems much more expansive to people with will context, but we’re interpreting things on a scene by Scene basis, so of course our opinions will change. I think from the perspective of someone who loves one piece, the measured and analytical approach care seem reductive, when I think everything we’re saying is completely fair.
I don’t even think we’ve said anything that negative, we’re just not jumping for joy every time anything happens.
We’ll just have to see where things go

Regarding Oda's statements on what the One Piece is, I always feel like fans may have walked away with their own interpretations of whatever the exact statement may be. To my knowledge, the context is very much that it is not going to be a 'the One Piece is the friends we made along the way' sort of ethereal bullshit thing given the scale that (given our present knowledge), the One Piece is either the biggest McGuffin in popular culture or the slowest utilized Chekov's gun. It is my belief that Oda, with that particular statement, wants to communicate that the One Piece is not just a plot device, nor some thinly wrapped spiritual promotion piece, but an actual part of the story that had had its existence, intention, purpose and meaning very clearly defined since the very first chapter.

Oda is both. He plans ahead a lot, his foreshadowing and callbacks are just insane, youll have time to see for yourself how crazy they can get. But he also admitted himself, for a lot of things he just comes up with them on the moment. His editors constantly battled with him to keep him from going off the main path too much. He loves straying on random adventures and writing a shitton of characters. Lets just say One Piece wasnt meant to last 24+ years easily going for 30 but more like 5.

The funny thing is that Mihawk's strength is not even nearly comprehensible enough, even in the anime where its showed much better. The sheer magnitude of his power and other big players later down the line needs all the context of 1000 episodes to truly get. He is quite literally the ceiling of power and introducing him this early in the series was a genius move.
