Rob wrote the lyrics and took them to Carlos. When he saw the line "I could change my life to better suit you mood" he asked Rob if she was Latina and he said yes. And the best collab of the 90's was born!
It's so rare to hear a song I could listen to hundreds of times and never get tired of it. Smooth is that song, this is one of the greatest tunes ever. Even the year it won everything and was played everywhere I never tired of this one.
My father loves Santana, I loved Matchbox 20. When this collab dropped in the 90s my father and I had a good time vibing out at full volume in the living room
My Generation knew and Loved Santana. When Santana recorded this collaboration albums and this song hit the radio… I would laugh at the 90’s generation asking “have you heard of Santana”?
That's how I was when I was 14 and first heard What Love Got to Do with It. I asked my Mom did she know who Tina Turner was. She went and got her album of Ike and Tina and played Proud Mary for me! It was a live version. That how I came to know about Tina Turner AND started going thru my parents (and Uncle's) albums! 😊
Did Santana do singing in the 70's and not anymore in the 90's, or was is a bit from between? All the never songs have different singer in the from what i've heard it's strange.
Has anyone ever noticed at the beginning of the song, Carlos starts playing and Rob is just sitting there with the biggest grin on his face, he looks totally wowed to be sitting there listening to the riff. I just love that part.
I'll never forget bumping into Carlos Santana in Tiburon, California. He simply looked at me, held up the Peace Sign ✌️☮️ and said "Love and Light My Brother" I was star struck & in awe. Wife was like "Dude, pick your jaw up off the floor" lol
I got to see SANTANA live last year. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. The whole crowd was on their feet dancing and singing the whole concert.
Carlos Santana is a living legend. 25 years ago 1999 his guitar work is so smooth the album Supernatural is a classic and the live shows were spectacular.
Had the pleasure of seeing Santana live five times in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, once on the same ticket with Eric Clapton. Not one second of my life went to waste attending those shows.
Eight years ago, I was singing karaoke at my favorite "hole-in-the-wall" when the DJ decided to start playing a game he called the wheel of music. When it was your turn, you spun the wheel and it would tell you the genre of music you were going to sing. If you knew a song you could pick it or let the crowd choose for you. My turn came, I had songs ready for each genre on the wheel, but my spin landed on DJ Picks, the DJ, a friend of mine, got to pick not only the genre, but the song as well! Now, he knows me pretty well and knew that I have a good ear for music and could fake my way through just about anything. It may not be the way the lead line was written, but it was going to be in tune. As he was going through his books, he asked about this song and I told him all I knew of it was the hook (after he sang it for me). So, I sang the song, it wasn't perfect by any means, but everyone seemed to enjoy it. I walked off the stage, went to the bar and got a beer, turned around and looked right into the most beautiful brown eyes I had ever seen! We talked, we danced, I sang, and in April of 2025 we are getting married! I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!
Adore this song - will NEVER get tired of it. But if you want to hear Rob at his very BEST - please check out his live performance of Bright Lights. Rob plus the piano - and amazing lyrics makes for the most PHENOMENAL performance. Cheers from Ontario, Canada! :)
Of course this should be on your Playlist, and not just for Sunday morning cleaning around the house. Lol Try blasting this in your car, driving down the highway and try not to sing along.
Not sure which is hotter, Carlos and his sizzling guitar or sweaty smokin hot Rob in a cowboy hat! The two together ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 Been on my playlist since ‘99 😂❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
all i can say is WOW. I mean you have The mighty i mean the MIGHTY MR. Santana joining with one of the greatest singers of the 90's Mr Thomas lol. Im so glad that Carlos said yes.

Brilliant collab, never gets old. Santana…Latin groove at its best! Saw Matchbox 20 in Feb this year on tour in Australia with Goo Goo Dolls, both bands were still brilliant, Rob Thomas still has it, still hot af. That’s why they call the classics, CLASSICS!
OH yeah! I still have this CD! I graduated that year it came out. I had a 68 Mustang, it was gold with white top. I had a stereo system added to it where it didn't mess up the car. Those were good times!
I grew up in the Bay Area during the 60’s and 70’s. Santana was part of my generation, seen him live and it is amazing. This talent is something to be listened to from generation to generation.
Black Pegasus Love this reaction sooooo Much! The first time I heard this song I got chills and every time I hear it I still get those chills. I enjoyed the heck out this reaction . Rob Thomas & The Carlos Santana ....Very few double artists for one song have I Ever Loved like this. This doesn't happen every day.... the video makes me want to be there in the streets dancing 💃🕺 Thank you for your reactions and comments here
It was 1999. And Santana was a great musician from an era of AMAZING musicians. These guys started with only 4 tracks, and effects were done with carboard tubes and weird things like that. They had to be great to get the sound across. And sometimes you had drum and bass on one track, all the rest on the other, a third track was vocals and the 4th was used for the rest of whatever they wanted to cram in there. Shit was a higher level of difficulty. It's like explaining to a kid with a Nintendo Switch with rewind how HARD it was to play those games in an arcade.
Exactly ,what people don't realize what innovative techniques the Beatles came up with..I saw their equipment at Abbey Road studio...or the famous drum sound on Led Zeps "When The Levee Breaks" was done in a hallway of an old house with the Mike's positioned just right..nothing fancy from what I've read thru the years. Not only were the singers and musicians great back in the 60's 70's very talented but innovative and creative in so many ways. Artists today have it easy ....
It's my belief that Carlos is one of the greatest guitar player of my (long) lifetime! He's in the mix with Eddie Van Halen and Stevie Ray Vaugh. I was introduced to Santana by an uncle. He played the Woodstock album, plus the later Beatles, like a religion. I loved hearing Santana music after those early days. Many of his mainstream radio played songs brought a Latin beat and feel to most rockers that wouldn't have listened to that genre if their lives depended on it. The beats, the sounds, the instruments. All made something come to light in this Irish kid's mind and heart. Now Rob Thomas has one of the unique voices in 80s and 90s music scene! Almost everything that was released by Matchbox 20 (not 22) seemed to become a hit. I was beginning to believe this group could have become the "new Beatles" for the 1980s! They were that good and becoming that popular. And Carlos Santana isn't a musical genius of "a" generation. He's the musical genius of multiple generations! 🎸
Carlos Santana goes back 55 years in making music. His band's appearance at Woodstock in 1969 was either very early in their career or one of their first live performances. He's always recorded and toured often, though his popularity dipped in the 80s and early 90s. One of my favorites is Europa, which is an instrumental, but takes you to a peaceful place.
That is not Rob Thomas’s wife. Thomas is married to Marisol Maldonado, whom he met in 1997 at an after party in Montreal. “Smooth” was released in 1999. The woman in the “Smooth” video is Virginia Torres.
@@kristinkeiner6547 I appreciate this accurate clarification. I couldn't remember his wife's name, but I do remember him talking about it on E back then.
Brings back so many great memories. Carlos has always been a part of my culture. This reminds me of hanging with Chica de casa & dancing 💃🏽 having a cool time. Love Rob with Carlos on this song. Gracias for this reaction.
Ive seen Santana live more times than I can count. Dude is weird, but kind. And he has that delicious, signature style. I bought my guitar partly because he plays one. The sweet spot is the upper G. IYKNY. 🤘
I got to see Rob Thomas live in concert in 2005 in Fresno CA. It was a wonderful concert. He did perform this song. If Santana had been there, whoooo boy.
This was a big one. Well, still is. Was played up and down. The 90s (even late 90s in this case) were just a great time and a great decade to experience. Everything felt so light, happier. And that's not just nostalgia talking, because after 2001 the world did indeed change. The lightness and happiness of those times are gone. The 90s were also a great time for amazing songs like this one. Still on my Playlists and my old iPod Classic.
This was the sound of my youth 🤣 Amazing song. You really need to look at some of Rob Thomas from that age because he was fantastic on those days. And Carlos, Carlos is just perfection ♥️
It's absolutely no secret Carlos, partakes in the herb on a daily basis. With that said, Dan Rather interviewed him in the the Axis series the Big Interview( if you've never seen the series check it out) .so in the final question , Dan asks Carlos , " How would you describe your music?". Carlos, takes a pause before answering, and replies .." My music is ..Delicious!!" Quite possibly the greatest answer in an Interview..EVER! 😂😂😂❤
Yay BP 😊 Such a freaking groove. Santana reinvented himself by taking all the big artists of the day and won several Grammys for the Supernatural LP. Rob actually married the girl in the window. Please please check out April Wine...Roller extended version 🙏 Great reaction and Peace out 🙏 ☮️ ✌️
Rob is the lead singer of "MATCHBOX 20" and he showed CD Carlos this song and he had no interest in singing it for the album but when Carlos heard him sing it when he was offering it to Carlos Santana thought that Rob would give it the emotional connection since it was a song written for Rob's wife. It was the biggest song in the 1990`-s even if it came out in 1999. Rob's wife is still drop dead gorgeous!!😍😍
Santana was my favorite concert of all time. It had a beautiful , uplifting , joyous vibe. The whole stadium audience was up and dancing. I didn't want the show to end. Wonderful night of music.
I spent a few months in a small town in Nicaragua the year this CD blew up the world. We were blowing it up all summer. Hard work, deadly creatures, hot women, gang fights,,,,,,,,, Greatest Summer ever.
The song is amazing.... the video is amazing.. I love the diversity in this video and in the music too. Just beautiful. Just so you have a better chance of seeing it... "Bright Lights" by Matchbox 20... live version. Love ya, BP!!
Heard this at work the other day and I was singing along. Great song with a solid singer and one of the best guitarists of all time. Good stuff. Cheers.
Santana is so awesome. Was always my favorite. He probably has that best portfolio of calabs than any musician i know. You know he only got like $500 to play at woodstock. he was only 18 and just starting out and that gave him recognition. And yeah he's still touring. Seen him here in Dallas a couple years ago.
took my oldest son to see Matchbox 20 in 1998, his first concert, he was 11. it was one of the best shows I have seen, the entire audience sand along on every song... doing this was a perfect union of voice and guitar... thank you for the great video...
Supernatural was a trully phenomenal album. Me in my early 20s back then... used to listen to european dance music, some overseas hip-hop, some 90s rock... this album opened the door for me to all sorts of music I had no idea I would fell in love with. Turning point in my life regarding how I percieved music. Have to give the most credit to my local radio station (mind this is in 1999 in central europe), absolutely no connection whatsoever... one evening just causually listening to it, and somehow there is this guy talking some Santana band, from its late 60s years to his newest album. Playing its biggest hits along the way. It hit me so hard and something deep inside me changed forever.
Holy Sh**! Has it really been 25 years since this was the hottest song playing?? Where did the time go? Still hot. 🔥🎸
My daughter was 14 at the time and I was 35, and we both had a crush on Rob Thomas 😂
I know, right?

Rob is still playing
I remember cranking this and put your lights on when they came on the radio in the car . . definitely a few years apart but yeah . . .
Rob wrote the lyrics and took them to Carlos. When he saw the line "I could change my life to better suit you mood" he asked Rob if she was Latina and he said yes. And the best collab of the 90's was born!

Santana with Michelle Branch singing Game of Love is also a great collaboration.
The whole album is great but the Branch collaboration is just not one of my favorites like Smooth or Maria Maria. 🤷♀️
I was just thinking of that song!
The big song was actually this one. Smooth and Maria Maria were on the Supernatural album.
Incredible album!

took my oldest son to see Matchbox 20 in 1998, his first concert, he was 11. it was one of the best shows I have seen, the entire audience sand along on every song... doing this was a perfect union of voice and guitar... thank you for the great video...
Carlos Santana stands alone. 🤩
Man it's a hot one...... Over here still knowing every word.😂😂
Santana was the first concert I went to in the early 70's at Michigan State. He's still amazing after all these years.
One of my favs!!
What a fun reaction to a great song, this song is just as fabulous now as it was back in the day.
