🔴Thanks for checking out our review of SKYPIEA!
Sorry if we didn't get to some of the topics you might have wanted to hear from us, we know there's a lot that people are looking forward to in the future, but we don't really have the context to talk about everything that this arc may or may not have set up. I'm saying this because a lot of people who have seen this podcast already have criticized us for such things, but it is what it is. If you want to hear us talk about some of the nitty gritty things that this arc sets up (whatever that is), then you'll just have to keep in touch, and wait for us to get there!
Regardless, we hope you enjoy this review, and we can't wait for you guys to see our reaction to the events of WATER 7!!! (Available now on patreon: www.patreon.com/BOLDcast )

I know It's Not gonna make sense of Gun eating A Devil Fruit, As of Now...
and I also know The Greatest Scientist, in One Piece Whose many other Inventions based on Devil Fruits Existence and Mysterious for now related to them...
So😂 I can't Spoil you... However something not making sense is Oda leaving a Premature Taste of Unexpected Shocking Reveals 100s of Chapters Later ....

Skypiea is the most Important Island dedicated to foreshadowing One Piece Treasure in Entire story line...
I don't think Oda involved in OP LA is gonna Let them remove his Chess pieces... even if it seems Non-Sensical or Less important, because that's how chess pieces works...
Remember "Dancing Party scene of Skypiea is Favourite Scene of Oda" For A Reason... you aren't yet supposed to know, However It's Maybe Literally Hinting at Something Big, maybe Biggest Event in OP later, when a flashback will play and We will probably Cry our Eyes out over something We mocked... because Oda wants us to think it's wacky and For Adding more Surface... when sometimes Oda Literally Leaves Biggest Reveal of Show in Skypiea, in a Casual Sentence of Subtitles...

I must warn you not to expect Luffy's character development. I'm not saying it won't happen, I'm saying you're ruining your viewing experience by waiting for it. His non-changes are intentional, fully thought out, effective and successful, and they are consistent with existing literary concepts. If you're interested in reading about this, there is a concept in literature of the "flat character". In the "flat character arc" concept, the character does not change or his changes have no effect on his actions, the world, the story, or the characters around him. This is a real, working concept that has been around for many decades.
An example of another anime character with a "flat arc" is Son Goku - he has a different personality, but the structure of his presence in the work is the same. And you mentioned it bthw. There are also many examples in classical Western culture - Indiana Jones, James Bond. Yes, even the Finnish Snufkin or the Swedish Carlson are examples of book characters with a “flat arch”.
THE ENTIRE POINT is for Luffy NOT to change, because he is the main engine of the story - he is a prism for the viewer’s perception, he is a comparative characteristic for creating contrast with other characters, and he is an independent unit of personality that provokes events around him. And it's not that he's not interesting as a character, as he already is. His reaction is unique, and you cannot completely predict what it will be, and each new reaction and new decision complements his image. Not once in 1000 episodes have I felt like I really NEEDED Luffy to change. At first I also WANTED this a couple of times, but this is not what I needed, and at this stage of the plot development I clearly understand this.
Again, I'm not saying that Luffy won't change, nor am I saying otherwise. I'm just saying that he is a "flat character", so if there are changes, they will happen in a certain way, which I described at the very beginning.

Crocodile is actually one of the villains who hits Luffy closest to home because he's the first person in this entire story who has the power to question Luffy's ability to become the pirate king. He constantly calls Luffy a rookie, he doesn't take Luffy seriously, he mocks his dream and that's why the last thing Luffy says before beating Crocodile is "I WILL SURPASS YOU!" not something like he's going to save Vivi or Alabasta. It's a very personal fight for Luffy, it's not simple good guy vs bad guy. Although I do think some of that can get a bit lost in the grand war happening around them.

one of the main reasons people tend to want to skip this arc is because of the anime pacing. other than that, people that do skip this arc dont know the amount of lore and information this arc has for the future of one piece. just because people say they skipped it does not mean it is not important. all canon arcs in this series is important for the story

Most arcs after this (in the anime) aren't paced very well. It gets progressively worse pacing-wise, it's just that a lot of the content in Skypeia is kinda eh with a mixture of slow pacing vs other arcs with slow pacing that have really awesome content. Like the one they are soon gonna enter.

About Oda not repeating the same things aesthetically, one thing that he does is that he never uses the same panel twice (in the manga, the anime is a different thing). So if he has to do a flashback back to a previous episode he will redraw it, differently.

I would say Oda might not be the most technical mangaka out there but he definitely is devoted as an artist and he's one of the most unique artists out there, one of his great strengths is in his imagination and the impact his scenery has, that I think Skypiea was one of his first showings and it gets better and better. About no one in Sky Island knowing devil fruits:
That kinda doesn't work on multiple levels but the most obvious level is that Shandians aren't native to the Sky Islands. Their ancestors are from an Island on the Grand Line where everyone knows what Devil Fruits are.
Another reason is because Luffy and his crew aren't the first to come up to the Sky Island. It happens every once in a while and since the crews that go up to the Sky are pirate groups on the grand line, chances are that there should have been a couple devil fruit users.
In terms of worldbuilding I think it would be harder to convince me that no one on the Sky Island knows what a devil fruit is.

One thing I like about the whole “keeping Luffy on the sidelines” in Skypiea is that it actually has a utility at the end. They are able to get gold because Luffy got trapped in the snake and stumbled across it.
It’s an aspect I really like about Skypiea is how little details tend to come full circle story telling wise in the arc. From a narrative perspective that’s what makes Skypiea really enjoyable, especially upon rereads/rewatches.

The reason Crocodile impaling Luffy with his hook is so iconic is because it was the first time in the series that he lost that badly in a fight. Even if you know he'll come back and eventually beat Crocodile, the moment itself is still memorable as the first time in the series that Luffy was challenged to that degree by an opponent. Your perspective wasn't wrong, it just wasn't the point of the scene, that's all.

That oda intended that the seven warlords would be the final bosses is wrong. This is related to a different concept. So he must have been sure about the overall structure before alabasta. That people think that oda thought alabasta could be the final arc is ridiculous. This misconception came into the community because oda thought it would take about the numbers of chapters to end the story where the end of alabasta is. Oda often miscalculates the length of his story

9:44 This would not work, because it's a very important part of the story that people do not actually accept Enel as God. They're only terrified of him, and they wish the old God would return. If they actually thought he was God then his actions would have some sort of validity. But, instead, by the end they were all praying that if a real God exists, that he would take down Enel.

By the way, people that skip stuff are not worth listening to. The great thing about One Piece is that there are multiple ways people can experience it because there are different aspects of the series people will latch onto. Some people like the lore and world building, some people like the themes, some only watch for the characters, some watch for the fights, etc. Watching reactions is valuable to us because it’s interesting to hear what perspective people take and if it possibly relates to our perspectives. There are a ton of content creators with different vibes for that reason.

Personally the big message of this arc is simply the sense of wonder and adventure and the romanticism of its story
400 years old battle? Poneglyphs? Battles over lands?
They do matter but not to the crew and that's the point
When everyone's readying to fight they're having a party in the middle of the night with wolves and a big fire
Their carelessness is contrasted through Robin, she's even confused as to why anyone would set up a campfire in unknown territories
For Luffy finding the gold is a sidetrack
His goal was the golden bell
Not for 400y old ancestry or to bring the voice of the land
But to keep dreams going, Cricket's dream to find the city of gold, and the idea that dreams never die
Complimenting Jaya and making full Circle
That's why Robin helping Wyper figure out WHY Luffy wanted to get to that bell was important too and made him drop his unrepressed rage and finally conclude his wish to ring it
Which also aligns with Luffy at the end of the day
When he later wakes up he still thinks they're fighting when it doesn't matter anymore and they all wanted to share

I think an important way to look at fights in One Piece especially Luffy's is that he represents freedom in the story so the antagonist are very literal roadblocks in the way of that freedom, it's not about proving them wrong is about getting them out of the way, if anything that idea of fights being arguments happen separately and are more about the difference between Luffy and the antagonist as captains and pirates.

The idea that Skypieans wouldn't know about devil fruits just doesn't make sense even with the information you learn within the arc. While the sky islands are more isolated and harder to reach, there is still trade and contact with blue sea people. Especially when you pay attention to the mentions of a safer, more conventional route connecting the blue sea and the white sea in the grand line.
Then there are the Shandians who were from the grand line. While territorial, they still would be aware of devil fruits and general information about the grand line. The world of one piece is a living world that typically doesn't take the easy way out when it comes to worldbuilding. It's also one of Oda's greatest strengths as a writer in general.

There are just ppl who decided to read the manga for it but just bc some ppl decided to skip it does not mean that this Arc isn’t important. It is very important for future Arcs, so keep the things that happened in Skypia in mind.

there was one thing that you guys misunderstood about the shandians and the porneglyph. they did not understand the ancient language and didn't ever see the bell or the text in their life since it was lost for 400 years. they were relieved because of gold rogers words "I will carry this message to the end of the grand line" or something. he had already carried out the mission. but they might have never known if they didn't meet robin because not many people can read the ancient language and robin translated it for them.
(at least that's how I remember it correct me if I am wrong about any of this)
anyways I love your reviews and podcasts it's nice to see someone who actually thinks about and analyzes the content they watch. I may not always agree with every single thing you say but I like hearing a different, honest perspective. if any of you two likes to read I would love to see manga reviews just so you can experience the vast difference in pacing and the amount of stuff that didn't seem like filler but actually was.

Carson's stance on Luffy vs Crocodile is always so weird and now he's contradicting himself. Luffy is the main character, of course, he will win and is the answer to every problem. It's correct in the strictest sense, which is why his fight with Crododile meant something: he lost twice and the first time it happened it wasn't even a fight because Luffy couldn't even land a hit. Now the story presented a dilemma for Luffy, how could he win in that situation? He got it right the second fight but was still messing around as always, and then he finally got serious before finally beating Crocodile.
If the impact of Luffy's "dying" was lost since you're a new viewer for a long series, that's fine. Anyone would realize he would get back up later either way. The point was what he would do when his usual strategy doesn't work anymore? I noticed that the two of you are either oversimplifying or overthinking something, which is fine when theorizing in general. The problem lies when you still get something wrong and then contradict your point in the end.

On the topic of Alabasta and what dialog/message is in defeating Crocodile, I think there's a little more there than the simple evil vs good paradigm. To me, there's at least one other major idea that Crocodile embodies, which Luffy refutes by defeating him. That ideals without the power to back them up are useless.
This is best illustrated in his interactions with Vivi and Tashigi. When he's about to drop Vivi from the palace roof, he mocks her for sticking to her ideals and even states that adhering to them vehemently actually resulted in more deaths than necessary. Similarly, when confronting Tashigi (who was lying helplessly on the ground after Robin broke her leg) he tells her that "losers can't speak of justice, that's the kind of Sea we're in".
Even after Crocodile is defeated, his words are still stuck in Tashigi's head and we see in her frustration that they are somewhat vindicated, she didn't follow her own justice because she lacked the power to do anything but help the pirates, it wasn't her choice but her only option.
What is Crocodile's stated goal? We learn that his ultimate reason for taking over Alabasta is to find the ancient weapon Pluton, but that's not his end goal, he says he needs the power of Pluton to fight the World Government so he can create his own country. His entire plan was nicknamed project Utopia for a reason, I think he genuinely wants to create one, and believes he needs the power of Pluton to do so, and he's willing to take whatever means to achieve that.
Clearly, the audience knows that any "Utopia" that Crocodile creates won't actually be one, it will simply be another military state, but I think it's indicative of how lofty his goal actually is to justify needing that level of power, and implies that in the past Crocodile had his dreams crushed in the face of overwhelming power when he was a rookie pirate. Which is reflected in his dialog with Luffy during their final fight when Luffy announces he will be the next King of the Pirates. Crocodile tells him there are any number of rookies just like you in this Sea, and that the more you learn about this Sea, the less you'll be able to spout off about such dreams.
Anyway, great discussion and I can't wait to see how you enjoy what's coming next.

One thing you will learn in one piece is that information is almost like a 1 way mirror. It seems so mysterious and hidden until you learn it, and then it’s retconned into being widespread information.
The 2 main examples you’ve seen so far being the grand line/devil fruit info being basically nonexistent in the east blue when tons of characters know the info (and the news describes everything going on there) and how Enel seemed so mysterious yet gan fall knew he was a dude from Birka with a lightning logia and just didn’t say anything.
The show does this a lot. Many other characters and things you only half understand come out to be basic info

I dont care what anyone says, Skypiea is still in my top 3 arcs for multiple reasons, and this is excluding how it gets more relevant as the show progresses. As a standalone arc, it has many things: Pure adventure in a wonderous destination, deep lore of the land (Noland's backstory shreds me to pieces), S tier One Piece humor, a villain that has terrifying abilities and is competent (minus funny haha face), great art, and many great fights.
I love rewatching it all the time. I never really understood why people say it has bad pacing in the anime, granted I've never read Skypiea to compare it. The only part that felt even remotely dragged out was Luffy in the snake. I didn't really mind it since many other things were happening that were of more importance. Also side note, Eneru still technically "won" since he left to where he wanted to go anyway. He would be an absolute monster if he decided to train for a while and then come back lol

You have no idea how much important this arc is and you won't understand it until you catch up. By my estimate you need 3 - 4 years to catch up. Oda would likely try to finish One Piece in 3 years so it's likely it would finish within 4 years. Make sure you catch up before the show ends because manga is only 30+ chapters ahead of anime.

One common thing you'll see all through One Piece is that he'll introduce an idea or theme in the story early. As a testing bed.

Live action Skypea will be the biggest test of this series, not only bc of the technological production they'll have to do but also bc its one of the weaker arcs of OP, many ppl drop the anime bc of Skypea. They'll have to make some changes to make it more interesting and more relevant to the main story than the anime. Imo they should advance things that happen way way ahead here like they did with Garp.
Many purists hate these changes but a series with the budget of OP cant have one bad performing season or else Netflix will cut it. It would be a shame if Skypea is the reason OP gets canceled, specially bc its the precursor to what is IMO the best OP saga. If the live action survives Skypea and gets green lit to adapt Water 7 saga im confident in saying OP has the potential to reach the status of other legendary series like Breaking Bad or GOT

This has something to do with Raijen the god of thunder . He is the one causing the thunder in a storm and is said that he eats children's bellybutton, if one is exposed, he might swoop down and devour the child
Also kami means God & kaminari means thunder
So if Enel said I'm Kami it means I'm god or I'm thunder, Oda loves puns, he uses them a lot
