We were fortunate to receive a review copy of Legions Imperialis, for review. We pitted the Blood Angels 5th Company against the 74th Securran Janissaries in our first RUclips Battle Report of many.

Hi all. We are aware have made a few errors within this Battle Report video (juggling filming and a new game system can mean this happens) and most have been noted below in the comments :) hope you enjoy the game.
I really like how you can play an epic battle like this using hundreds of units but without requiring a huge board to play on. Excellent battle report!
I love everything I have seen so far from this game, just watching this I already tought about how the dynamics would change if you can bring artillery, Drop Pods, air assault, transports etc.

Excellent battle report, so looking forward to this game, I loved Epic Space Marine 2nd Ed back in the day and this draws so much from that (I think GW's best war game rules-wise). I felt the anguish of the Solar Auxilla's terrible rolls to hit in the early rounds. The armies look superb, but those SA tanks, seriously, are exceptional. More of this, as an Australian it will be a few extra weeks before I see the game in person so these reports are my vicarious replacement.

if legions imperialis was converted to a pc/console rts i would hand my money over immediately
I honestly feel like planes should work differently. Make them behave similar to flyers in old apocalipse, but with orders of their own (using the same tokensbut different meanngs)!!!
I could come up with the following:
Strafing run, Intercept, bombing run, land(for transports) and Jink/pull up(more of a reaction).
Jink is an additional Save characteristic you can use it or your armor save, not both. You also cannot split fire with the dreadnaughts because neither of the weapons have Point-Defense.
Based on what happens in the books just imagine what would actually happen if an Auxilia force tried to take on a legion force. It would be absolute slaughter.
Eh. The Auxiliar are pretty much the pinnacle of normal human combat effectiveness. If properly supported by logistics a great Cohort could maybe match a legion. They have much more manpower after all
Legion forces this size could be decimated especially with a titan

Everybody agree that 1v1 would be a slaughter, but 10v1, supported by Tanks and Artillery, and with Ogryn Charonites and Veletaris for melee support… that would be another story.
eh the Solar Auxilia is meant to be the early Tempustus Scions so they do stand a snowballs chance in hell of winning

It seems that you did the fight rules wrong. You only rolled a single d6 for each fight instead of 2d6 for the assault marines and 3d6 for the ogryns.
Yep. Sorry we were rushing. We dropped a D6 in error. Brain switched off!

I really like the red for your Blood Angels: nice and punchy! You should do a 'how to paint it' (unless you have and I'm just too dumb to have spotted it). Cheers for the report anyway: as a sadly-oldie who was getting on a bit when even Space Marine came out, seeing the upscale and new rules is very interesting.

Think you got Jink wrong chaps. Rulebook states a model can have various amounts of Save Characteristics but only ever use ONE (Normally the best!). So Jink isn't a save THEN an armour save on top. You just use the best available.
Yup. You are correct. Was rushing got a bit forgetful whilst trying to film too. Will get it right next time. 😅
28:46 A bit of narrative would have been nice. Perhaps the warhound missed those laser blaster rolls, because those stinking Lightnings are busy dog fighting in the way with that Xyphon.
Very cool to see that fight. Couldn’t the bane blade shave short the building with the assault troops first turn or are they not strong enough?
I also think the melee attacks should have been done a bit differently, but it was still great to see.

Excellent battle report. Beautiful scenery, and beautifully painted figures. Don't a lot of the vehicle weapons have firing arcs? I thought I saw a time or two when it might have come into play. I think not all of the forces were played to their strengths, but that will come with experience. A rules question though, as I don't have a rule book yet. Can tanks fire trough friendly infantry at targets in range?
If only someone had invented mechanised infantry in 2nd World War.
Did you forget to make a Morale Check when the charging squad was overwatched at around 38:00 or have I missed something? Also I think all weapons are fired at the same time and the opponent chooses the save order so when the Warhound was being fired upon by the Reaver with its one void left it could have chosen Volcano Cannon, Laser, Apocs to try and tank the higher strength weapons.

I thought Combat was done with 2d6 + CAF?
I think Hand to Hand starts at 2d6 + CAF but I am by no means certain. I see below I was correct and you have realised this error as well.

It always makes me laugh how the camera makes these figures look bigger than what they are for such small models. The detail is excellent.

I like the BatRep, but i have a question, are both armys the same points? Space marines seem to have more troops and more firepower. Or how is it balanced?

I've never played Epic but this looks like a lot of fun... it dropped me two times out the queue yesterday and I wasn't able to pick up the Arvus Lighters. I feel like they could be quite useful for movement of the Solar Auxilia. Still looking forward to receive my box.

I'm really loving the look of this iteration of Epic. But I still have an empty feeling from it only being Horus Heresy based. I feel that if GW don't get the "band back together" and bring out all the races out in the new epic scale, they'll have really soiled themselves on this.
I think they are testing the water if people are interested in this system. Horus heresy has the benefit that you only have 3 major factions (model wise [space marine, imperial army, mechanicum]) but like 30 factions lore wise(legions, legios and human armys).
Also a full 40k release with like 14 races all having somewhere around 15 different models (they need a somewhat full range with infantry (normal,assault heavy), artillery, tanks(light,medium,heavy),fast attack, dreadknoughts, knights, flyers, titans would be too costly. That would dwarf a new edition for mainline 40k in complexity. The designing and distribution would be a heavy investment and when people simply not buy it it would be a too big risk for gamesworkshop.
My guess is we get 3 years of legions imperialis and later an extension for 40k probably starting with orks and eldar since both of them could appear during the heresy. And later tyranids and primaris since they are the posterboys for current warhammer.
How does it play compared to the last few editions of the game?

Can't you only have up to 4 bases per tactical detachment in addition to the required 4?
At 22:22 a Malcador is removed without a saving throw. Don't the rules say that a dice roll of 6 is always a success even if the number required is 7+ ...?

On Page 57 it says: “as stated previously, when making a saving role, a natural 1 is not an automatic failure, and a natural 6 is not an automatic success - a model can have a 1+ armour save characteristic after modifiers (in which case it will automatically pass its save role) or be unable to pass a saving role on a single D6 due to the AP of the firing weapon (in which case it will automatically fail, it’s save roll).
Hope you enjoyed the game otherwise. There were a few errors and we have bought Microphones now so speech is clearer! :)

Whats the board size for your average battle?
Every time those dice roll on those plastic tiles, I cringe. Ouch. Not just because of the sound, it also the paintwork being ruined.

Why is everything a glass cannon with nearly zero survivability?
Because in a normal game you'll probably be running 3 or 4 times as much stuff as this. Stuff HAS to die fairly quick otherwise it would become a boring slogfest. They did quite a lot of rules wrong too but it's their first time. Dreadnoughts are for example, fairly tough against Light and Light AT and have invunerable saves.
Not nearly enough terrain on the table you have no obstacles or obstructions. Infantry need terrain or they are pure fodder.
Are they going to be adding the other races? I think it would be cool to get back into wh 40k with something like this. Loved reading dwarf magazines and the apocalypse size fights but could never afford it. If other races come out im definitely jumping in.
This was released under Horus Heresy, so no :/ Seems like a missed opportunity for GW.

Hiya. I am sure at some point they would have room to expand the game to other races. Battles were bigger in the Horus Heresy too. On the board there were around 165 Space Marines (over a Company). So it could be done. I can imagine it happening eventually (probably set in the Great Crusade first to make the use of the Age of Darkness armies) before porting to the 40k Timeline with Primaris. They have most fliers for Xenos done already too which is great.
Hh fits the scale perfectly for this.
@BattleBunniesTV yeah I was doing some more digging and found they have no plans to add any xenos to legions imperialis. And all the xenos from aeronautica are being removed as anything from aeronautica and titanicus will be usable for LI. But who knows hopefully they change their minds because I think a lot of people want epic to come back.
Are they snap kits or do we need to glue them like the older kits?
Which bits? Tanks are multipart. Legionnes are single glue to base (apart from Missile Launchers).

Fire seems quite laborious. The air to air combat took forever with so many weapon systems all firing separately.

Hi Anchises. I thought it was quite fast. Especially when you come to 40K. We will try to do it faster next time though :)
@@FarseerB1rdy Playing with 3000 point and rolling multiple weapons systems for every miniature is going to make for some long, boring fire phases.
@@Anchises Disagree. Most weapons have 1-2 dice. Most units have 1 oe 2 weapons.
@@Anchises Disagree, between how fast units die and the amount of dice rolled, it's pretty low time wise. Bare in mind most detachments don't allow split fire unless it's Point Defence weapons (off the top of my head) so you won't taking time deliberating how to best split fire. AND you alternate firing - you're not literally watching your opponent fire everything he/she has. It's one Detachment, then you fire a detachment etc. You'll always be in the game.
Example - 4 Kratos Tanks - a tank with a silly amount of guns.
4 x Battlecannons at 20" = 8 Dice (4 Dice at 10" or less)
4 x Kratos Lascannons = 8 Dice
4 x Kratos Sponson Lascannons = 4 Dice

Jink and a +3 seems kinda broken.
Well the solar auxilia really lack skyfire right now, Itll be less powerful as more models release. I think in these early stages flyers will really dominate.
They got Jink completely wrong. Jink grants another Save Characteristic but you can only ever take ONE type of Save as per the rules. So either the 5+ Jink or it's Armour Save

I feel the Reaver just kinda won this game. The actual Astartes don't seem particularly impactful or survivable (the distinction between them and the solar Aux isn't pronounced enough imo). I was hoping for a game more like Epic Armageddon.
