★ 4K 🇨🇭Cab Ride Neuchâtel - Buttes, Switzerland [12.2019]

- In this video we look at an interesting branch line in the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel. We start off in the city of Neuchâtel on the SBB line in the direction of Geneva and branch off towards Pantarlier (France). Note the turn off to La-chaux-de-Fonds from the main line shortly after Neuchâtel: this was the original line intended to go in the direction we're heading. It was abandoned and later used for the line to La-chaux-de-Fonds.
At the station of Travers, we turn off from the SBB network onto a line owned by a private company with the name TRN (Transports Régionaux Neuchâtelois). In Fleurier the line divides yet again, with a 1.6km line heading to St. Sulpice to the right, which closed to passenger traffic in 1973 and was handed over the railway club " Vapeur Val-de-Travers" in 2012 for historic railway traffic.
There are a few interesting and somewhat rare situations on the TRN section of our trip. Stations typically have an entrance and exit signal in Switzerland. None of the train stations after Travers have a distance signal for the exit signal - which makes sense, because most trains stop at all stations anyway. A through train however, would have to slow down enough through stations to prepare for a stop signal.
It's also interesting seeing level crossings in the middle of stations which are unprotected by signals. There is a special signal in the driver's plan indicating that he or she must stop before the crossing. We also see foot crossings at stations, come with speed limits of 20 km/h for trains.

The worst is that I have asked the local company to do videos for each line (trains + buses) but they didn't understand the "project" I had - very complete and detailled... (NB: that was before the pandemic).
Gladly I was able to do the train next to the lake, thanks to a special day.
And before the RBDe here, there was FLIRT RABe 527 on this line (we can see one on the right at the beginning in NE). They now work mainly on the main line between the 2 major cities of this area.
2:06 These RBDe 562 are now gone, replaced by FLIRT RABe 522 which are more better. The older ones where old fashionned, non-accessible and they don't have a "good look" for passengers paying the price of the High Speed train from Paris, as they had to change in Pontarlier if they want to go in NE.

Very familiar scenery - I cycled through here 30 years ago on a hair brained idea of cycling over the alps from Basel to Genoa. This particular day - it was Biel to Ste Croix via Neuchatel. Ultimately only got as far as Lausanne. Also worth mentioning is this region is home to Swiss luxury watch making - in particular the next to last stop - Fleurier

Cependant les explications que vous donnez sont en allemand et en anglais, mais jamais en français. Or il me semble que cette langue fait partie des langues officielles du pays ce qui n'est pas le cas de l'anglais.

Also , I'm curious, when the driver comes to a road crossing, NO horn. Here in the USA, horn is always used.
We have signals for when we need to whistle. It's usually at crossings without barriers after a curve - when people could be surprised by a train. They're quite rare.

Interesting, another part to the Swiss rail system. The tunnels and track bed would indicate there use to be two tracks up to the lines dividing to France and to our destination. Possibly singled due to low traffic expectations and electrification? Buttes also has a head shunt for running loco round a train, steam or vintage electric specials in season?
It was never double tracked, but back then they prepared for the future =)

Warum wurde die Fahrt nicht bei schönem Wetter gefilmt?
Weil es nur eine Gelegenheit gegeben hat. Der Aufwand ist grösser als man denkt. Es muss voraus geplant werden, somit ist der Wetterbericht meistens auch nicht so ausagekräftig. Wenn es dann doch regnet wäre es schade die Aufnahne und die ganze Arbeit deswegen weg zu werfn.

I didn't think that French Switzerland is so different from German
Speaking of which, it was interesting to hear the announcements in both French AND German. This being a regional line within Neuchâtel, I would have expected them to be in French only.
@@scottevans2685 Loads of tourists, from all over the country (and from much farther too), especially in summer. From Noiraigue, for instance, people hike down the "Gorges de l'Areuse" or hike all the way up to the "Creux du Van".
