★ 🇨🇭4K Cab ride Waldenburg - Liestal, Switzerland [08.2019] Soon part of history!

  • Today we're looking at a special railway, the 750mm narrow gauge Waldenburg railway, which is the last of it's kind in Switzerland that is operational. The only other operational railway with the same gauge is the Marzilibahn, that is however a funicular.
The story of its conception is an interesting read on wikipedia (at least the German version). Originally a railway was to be constructed via Bubendorf - Reigoldswil with a possible connection to Balsthal with a tunnel. The construction of the tunnel actually started at the end of the 19th century and was stopped due to a lack of expertise. Finally the track was planned via Holstein with its terminus in Waldenburg.
The reason I wanted to document this track, is due to the fact that it will be converted to a 1000m gauge railway in the following years and operated by BLT (Basel Land tram), the company with the yellow trams in Basel. There are talks of making it fully automated. The will then become a historic video of what once was.
Even the trains have already been sold to a narrow gauge railway in Slovakia.
Enjoy the video, leave your comments and subscribe in order not to miss any future videos. I have a lot of videos passing through the terminus station in Liestal to various locations in Switzerland.

Keep an eye out for switches in the wrong position. On this line, they're spring loaded and can be driven over in any position. This is indicated by a white green signal latern.

This line brings back memories. In August 1981 I was with my family on holiday in Basel. One morning my father phoned my school back home to get the grades for me and my twin sister. Mine were good enough to get into university and my twin sister had passed her courses and could start her nursing studies. To celebrate we went on a day trip on the Waldenburgerbahn and even got a little souvenir plate with a picture of the train. Since then this little railway has had a special place in my heart. Thanks for the video lorirocks.

Great video! I enjoyed the other one as well which started in Liestal. I didn’t realize until this video that I actually passed a short section of this route when I took a SBB train in 2014 from Basel to Cadenazzo (Ticino). I had a neighbor here in Brooklyn, NY who owned a home in San Nazzaro. He visited his native Switzerland a couple of times every year (originally from Gstaad) and invited my mom and me to stay with him for a few nights. We visited our relatives near Frankfurt, Germany before we visited him. Sadly, he passed away last year.

Also look for other things they carry as well. LOVE the ride, wish we had more of that in AMERICA.

I really needed a Big wide Footbrake and perhaps a Steering wheel. FABULOUS trip. I drive around Dublin and can only at 50kms if and when you gat a bit of a straight road with little traffic and even less Pedestrians.. Edge of the seat for this.. I've noticed that the outgoing Trains divert to the Right ''Passing'' Line while the incoming ones divert to the Right line as well.. So thats part of the design so there is no need for Manual Points Switching at every set of Points on the Line.. I have seen this system on Narrow Gauge lines in Wales and it has to be on a single line system..It is very clever.. Great Fun riding this line at what appears High Speed..

Ein Beweis, dass man auch auf Schmalspur flott fahren kann, vorausgesetzt, die Gleise liegen akkurat, was hier der Fall ist. Für nur 750 mm Spur fährt der Triebwagen wirklich schnell. In anderen Ländern kaum vorstellbar. Including right at the end; he went up as close to the buffer stops as he possibly could. However, the proposal to convert this totally unfenced line to automated driverless operation is crazy. Would you want to live (or work) in a building which had driverless tram-trains speeding past your door?

what do the flashing amber signals mean? Do they indicate a requested station halt?

Great video! Good to see this line before it changed. I passed one of the new trams on my way back to Basel back in the Summer. I understand some of the trains have been sold to Slovakia?

Yes, I think all of them were. They've had problems with the new ones including one or two derailments. On a number of occasions they had to run a bus replacement service.

The factor that enhances the attraction of nature's beauty in Switzerland , the roads. The roads shown in all videos are on flat bed ground. Thi makes rail tracks crisscross roads with ease. In Himalayas roads are built in the mountains itself, as there are no flat ground. Hence Himalian roads will not appear as attractive as Swiss roads on the same beauty scale due to oppenéss óf Swiss roads.

Bei der Waldenburgerbahn gibt es keinen Triebwagen BDe 4/4 mit der Nummer 119. Das ist der Steuerwagen Bt 119.
Dein Video ist aber sehr gut gemacht.

Very nice and lovely video and I enjoyed very much. Can you please keep us informed on the conversion to 1000m gauge? Also, during the conversion period, will this line be operational. Thank you!

Lovely video! It really amazes me to see such a narrow gauge running at almost 80 kmph while here in India, the fastest I have been on a narrow gauge train is 25-30 kmph. I had a couple of questions - I noticed that at almost all the stations where there are double tracks, the signal is red at least till you come to a halt. Even if there is no train expected in the opposite direction. Why is this so? Also the spring loaded points that you mentioned, do you have any idea if this is the same system used for the Zurich tram network? Because a few times from behind the driver's cab I noticed that the points were set incorrectly while merging and I got quite scared that we would derail or something. This was 10 years ago on my first trip to Switzerland. After that I got used to it, haha! Thank you for this wonderful ride :)

Thanks for your comment. I assume the signalling is integrated with the level crossing boom gates. Once they are closed, the signal can be made green.
I'm not sure if the tram switches are spring loaded, rather, they stay in the position they are pushed to.
