  • Welcome to the first Seetal Cab ride on youtube in this direction. This is a unique line in many ways. For starters, the line is constructed much like that of a tramway, with many intersections without barriers and reduced clearance for standard rolling stock due to the close proximity of the road. Usually tramways of this caliber feature light rolling stock. The Seetal railway however, was run with the normal heavy, standard gauge rolling stock of the SBB, including Ae 6/6 locomotives for freight, Rbe 4/4 motor coaches, De 4/4s & the specially produced De 6/6. These do not have the braking capacity of their lighter, narrow gauge counterparts, which poses a risk when crossing intersections without barriers.
    During the past 30 years, many changes have been made to improve safety, including a massive reduction in crossings, installed barriers and the rerouting of the line at certain points. Beforehand there were over 500 crossings without barriers or warning lights. In 2009, the number could be reduced to 85, all fitted with a warning system, many with barriers.
    Moving the entire track or fitting each crossing with barriers would have meant the end for this line due to the high costs involved, keeping in mind that it has never been profitable since it's conception in 1882. Closing the line in favour of a bus service has been debated in the past, notably in the 1950's and again in the early 90's due the safety concerns. Thankfully though, the line has been preserved and solutions were found.
    Over the years, locomotives, wagons and trains have also been specially produced and adapted for use on the Seetal line. Notable examples are the De 6/6 Seetal crocodile locomotive, the reflective yellow strips used on many locomotives to warn cars and the more recently produced RABe 520, which we are riding in today, produced with a narrower body than standard SBB stock, to avoid the strafing of cars.
    Freight traffic is also a very interesting part of the history of the railway. There still is occasional traffic from Hochdorf in the direction of Lucerne, where the clearance for standard trains is given. Unfortunately local freight traffic has been declining nationwide, especially in areas where only small amounts of freight were being transported. A search for "Seetal SBB" on google image search will produce some interesting photos of how things used to be.
    And now, enjoy the ride on this historic railway!

    Wunderschön - ich bin Wildegg direkt an der Bahnlinie aufgewachsen und habe ein paar Jahre "z'Länzbig" gelebt. Der alte Seetaler war somit ein Teil meiner Jugend, früher noch mit den offenen Übergängen zwischen den Wagen und dem sagenhaften roten Seetalerkrokodil. Die neue Strecke haben ich nun mit diesem Video kennengelernt und erkenne noch das eine oder andere Sujet. Wildegg-Niederlenz-Lenzburg-Stadt ist natürlich längst Geschichte. Ich hoffe es gibt davon noch irgendwo Aufnahmen.

    Wow such luscious greenery and wonderful looking homes. What I find most unusual is I don't see any traffic issues or have noticed any traffic lights. The United States has a lot of that because we so heavily populated, seeing every mile you go either a supermarket, a convenience store or a fast food restaurant and a great deal of hustle and bustle and especially a great deal of crime here. Over there it looks so like country living but unless you have a car it looks like unless I'm missing something you would have to travel far to go shopping ( supermarket wise) never even see a fast food restaurant anywhere, just very peaceful living for a retired person who doesn't drive anymore I would think living there would be rather difficult. Even on that stretch of road I never even saw a city bus. Just on occasion some cars going to and fro. I must say living here in the USA isn't all that good because of crime and big city living, but where I live I do see and ride a city bus or get handicap service. As much as I love the scenery I think I would have a difficult time living there.

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  7 месяцев назад +1

      Living here is not difficult. Towns and villages are very centralised, meaning the most people can walk to the post office, grocery store or school. Public transport is very reliable and takes you basically anywhere you'd like to go. Cars are more of a luxary here than a necessity, except for those who live in houses away from it all.

    Thanks for sharing this underappreciated line! If I may amplify what has been said elsewhere, the original passenger route at Waldibrücke followed the roadway closely all the way and joined the current line at the Lenzburg end of the station - there is cabride footage on YT from the final days of the original passenger route clearly showing this and also showing the construction of the s-curve that currently connects to the Luzern end of the station.

    (English text)
    Thanks for sharing. May I point out one tiny little mistake? At 1:14:46, "Former line to ..." is inserted. In my opinion, this text belongs at 1:15:35, immediately behind the level crossing you can see a small wall on the right that bordered the former railway line.

    Great ride! can you explain "with a narrower body than standard SBB stock, to avoid the strafing of cars." a bit more? Straffing with what... ice in winter or are we talking about something else?

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  2 года назад +1

      Because the railway and road are so close, trains take up some space on the edge of the road. So narrower trains were developed prevent accidental scraping between the two.
      For example, when cars are standing, inexperienced drivers may not have left enough room for the train.

    0:18:02 Swiss military? Navy?
    0:24:30 For a moment I thought that driver was going to gun it in an effort to get past the gates.
    1:01:34 That looks like a crossbuck out on the road to the left of the lamppost. A remnant of the original route through this area?
    The lack of protective fencing between road-and-rail along much of this line is amazing. The we-must-be-protected-from-everything-that-might-hurt-us crowd here in the United States would be up in arms over the situation. Claiming it's only a matter of time before either a car/truck hits a train or a train hits a car/truck, those folks wouldn't shut up until fencing was up along the entire route--whether it were needed it not.
    I do seem to remember "riding" this line in the opposite direction, lorirocks (the track relocation away from the highway rings a bell). Thanks for the information in your description, it helps out those of us completely unfamiliar with Swiss railway history/operations.

      @ 18:02 yes swiss military, but not Navy, its the artillery. They call it the "Tenue A" which is the "Ausgänger" which in english means like "outputs". The perret colour tells you which troops he is

    • @patrickfitzgerald2861

      I imagine that here in the US there would likely be fatalities every week on a rail line like this until those fences you mention went up. Maybe we're just dumber than the Swiss on average?

    • @michaela.chmieloski3196
      @michaela.chmieloski3196 2 года назад +2

      @@patrickfitzgerald2861 There is the possibility that a train operating on this Swiss rail line could jump-the-track/derail and crash into highway traffic. Were such to happen, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that a chain link or wire fence will provide zero protection for any highway vehicles.
      More likely is that a driver will lose control of his/her vehicle and crash into a train operating along the tracks. The crash could be due to, say, a tire blowing out. Maybe a fence would shield the railway right-of-way from a wayward car; far less likely if a heavy truck is involved. Were such an accident as just described to take place here in the United States, my bet for the cause would be on the driver stupidly operating the vehicle in an aggressive/reckless manner. And our bubble-wrap people would want the fencing so as to "protect" themselves from themselves.
      I remember when Amtrak resurrected the old New York Central Railroad West Side Line in Manhattan back in the early 1990s so as to access Pennsylvania Station and provide better connecting service. The railroad constructed a heavy, chain link fence on both sides of the right-of-way to prevent trespassers, as well as erecting pedestrian overpasses for local residents. Of course, it was only a matter of time before a young child was struck and killed by a passing train. How did the kid get on the tracks? He went through one of the holes that were deliberately cut in the fencing as a means of providing a short-cut alternative to using one of the pedestrian overpasses. Seems that at least some of the locals were more concerned with convenience than they were with safety. As you said, plenty of stupid people here in America.

    schönes Video!
    Allerdings stimmt die Angabe bei 6:25 nicht. Die alte Linie von Beinwiel kam von rechts und zwar in Fahrtrichtung nach dem Bahnhof Emmenbrücke in etwa dort wo rechts der Parkplatz ist (etwa zur Minute 7:32). Sieht man auch sehr schön in der alten Aufnahme von 1998. Die Signalbrücke stand 1998 auch schon da...
    Gruß
