★ 🇨🇭Cab ride Luzern - Wolhusen - Langenthal - Basel, Switzerland

- Today's trip is somewhat special. It's not often that a freight train enters a terminus station, especially with half a million litres of ethanol. The alternative route (which we will be taking to Basel) however, does not allow trains over 1100 metric tons, likely due to it's inclines and older infrastructure.
The trip started in Basel, following the main line to Olten and Lucerne, where the train needs to change directions to reach it's destination, Schachen. Alternatively, a direction change can be made in Gütsch, is however unfeesable due to high traffic. The change in direction requires a locomotive at each end of the train.
In Schachen, the train is delivered and the locomotives continue back to Basel along a less frequently used line via Wolhusen and Langenthal.

Excellent…thank you! It was great to see all the rail-connected industry on the long single line section…I really enjoyed seeing just how busy that single line section is. I look forward to many more of your videos. Regards from Rob in Bournemouth, England.

I went in Wolhusen 40 years ago... amazing trip through a Swiss train!
Congratulations by this video.

Line that crosses small inhabited centers with annexed industrial connections at least as far as Langenthal.
After we have the interconnection with the Basel line that can be seen in other videos, very characteristic is congratulations for the video with greetings from GIO402b
Well maintained rail. So quiet! Enjoyed the trip beginning to end.
Thanks!
The Mitropa company was used on DR trains and I remember seeing them on the Hamburg Berlin route
Tolles Video !
Mfg Michael, Hamburg, Germany
I do like this one but it reminds us that November is only just over 3 months away so Autumn is just around the corner!
More breathtaking scenery .
Brilliant video! Enjoyed the long single track section.
Thanks!
Very enjoyable and interesting trip. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching
Gerne :) Freut mich dass es Ihnen gefallt
nice 1080p nice drive and off course so clean
Beautiful Scenery. Please upload more single track videos.
Only Switzerland makes industrial areas beautiful
Terrific video, nice filming sir.
Thank you
Klasse Video! Da bei mussten ja mehrere so richtig hart arbeiten ;-))
Congratulations - your upload finally had RUclips cooperate with it. I can imagine your frustration. Again, I am sorry to have pestered you so. I will just wait for future videos to be posted. Hope you will continue to create these marvelous videos. Best regards, Dana.
Thanks. Sounds good.
great video!!!! a very nice travel into Switzerland ...thank's from France .
Merci beaucoup :-)
So there is a second disconnected locomotive at the buffers of this freighttrain? Was it not possible to avoid this station? Apperently not!
It was connected
Video find ich Klasse, prima Aufnahmen Danke fürs Hochladen
Vielen Dank
Great video, Thanks!!
Another very good video, thank you. I have some advice for those travelling on the first part of the journey from Luzern. The train splits into two parts at Wolhusen. Unlike me, make sure you sit in the right section. One day last year I ended up in Willisau by mistake. It's a nice place, but not so good when you should be in Bern!
Well that was an interesting journey. Thank you. Can we have more of the secondary/minor routes?
Thanks. I'd like to cover as much as possible.
Schöne Strecke, schöne Aufnahme mit Erklärungen !! Abo haste
ancora un altro video eccezionale!
Very nice video, Lorirocks. Enjoyed the first hour's single-track operations with passing sidings at the stations permitting meets with oncoming traffic. Absolutely loved the close quarters when running through the suburban "backyards" in these same towns. One question: any idea as to the purpose of the stone-and-earthen berm on the left at 0:27:50? Seems a bit unusual to me that someone was concerned with erecting a barrier along the railway's right-of-way at this point given the openness found everywhere else. Thanks again for another fine presentation.
aaah , lets see if my pumpkin spice eggnog was made in Switzerland...
Turn on your travel fever by using my piano as gentle background music, unfolding magic.
Excellent !!! Thank you for sharing !!! :):):)
Excellent and very informative
Interesting industrial facility at Menznau West. Is that a sawmill?
In fact, a lot of interesting factories along there for a single track line.
This is 'SWISS KRONO'. They produce Chipboard, Flooring and Wall Panels.
Bom dia Pernambuco Brasil
Great video and greetings from 🇺🇸!
Thanks
Another enjoyable trip thank you for sharing. Your videos are always exceptionally clear. I see you did some lens adjustments when out of the train. If you don't mind me asking what type of camera equipment are you using? Even the furthest point on the horizon looks true to the eye and your image quality remains the best I have seen.
The rain was a nice change of pace and, the variety of wet surfaces enhanced the feeling of being there.
Thanks again!
Thank you! Actually nothing too fancy. Mainly a Lumix Fz1000, which lacks a bit when it comes to stabilisation, especially at 4K, hence most videos being 1080p.
@@lorirocks777 Thanks for the info! Keep up the good work!
Grande video bravo, notato spider-man a 1:47:50? 🙂👏
Lol
wonderful trip again. Am I right in saying that there is a heritage train depot at Sissach? I was sure I saw Wagon Lits and a Mitropa restaurant car on the left as the train went down the incline.
Thanks. Yes, correct.
Vielen Dank!
Wenn Sie der Tem meinen, ja.
super video
There is the main trunk railway Luzern-Basel via Olten. Why was the train rerouted over this route? Danger from the ethanol? Congested route?
Schachen is not on the main line
I love your videos but I can't understand why you don't use your headlights in the tunnels? I know you don't see anything but it is still good to know what's going on in the tunnels.
I do use them. I mainly travel with older locomotives and they are weak.
@@lorirocks777 thanks for the reply, and I just want you to know again that I enjoy your videos and will continue to watch them once they are posted.
Ganz tolles Video.Super Aufnahmen.Klasse.Ein Abo von mir
Vielen Dank!
Ex-ÖBB 1042 doesn’t work with Swiss signalling system or it’s only Austrian signalling does work? Sad they changed at schachen but nice
It was converted
Gemüse
Super video! aus Japan.
Amazing? How did the building at 1.13.01 pass building laws? Is there a Swiss branch of the Imperial Japanese Army at 1.13.48? (pre 1945 war flag + Swiss white cross)
Lovely video :)
Thanks!
At around 9.00 minutes the locos seem to be going quite slow, is this because they were struggling with the weight or due to a restrictive signal (the yellow in the tunnel), and also from 19.00?
Exactly. The signal in the tunnel showing two orange lights next to each other means expect stop at the next signal. However while he was approaching the next signal it switched from red to green in the meantime.
The situation at 19:00 is a little different: The distant signal at 17:52 shows expect 60 km/h, which corresponds to the main signal at 20:00 showing 60 km/h (two green lights above each other) and expect stop at the next signal (distant signal below the main signal, again showing two orange lights next to each other). The main signal at 22:00 then finally showed stop as announced. If you want some more detailed information on how the signalling system works in Switzerland, I can highly recommend the Wikipedia article about it.
But as you may have noticed, the speed in the last section mentioned was below 60 km/h anyway, this was probably because he knew that Schachen is the terminus of this train and he had to stop anyway. So there is no need to accelerate again if you know that you have to stop in a few kilometers and you're carrying a heavy freight train. Of course that's another story with light weight EMU's and if you have a tight time table to stay in.
danke. Mit den besten Grüssen aus Niederösterreich!
Tafel = Einfahrvorsignal
Ab Schachen wurde die 1042 geschleppt.
@@lorirocks777 Danke für die rasche Antwort! Aber die Frage vom Mitropa-wagen fehlt leider!? LG
@@herbertbasta3578 Der Grund ist einfach: Ich habe keine Ahnung :-)
Lieber Gruss
In Sissach ist der Friedenszug stationiert, siehe www.el-achai.com/
What is the name of the music at the beginning? An who is the author?
Sehr spannendi Mitfahrt überne nid so ganz alltäglechi Strecki. Danke vielmal fürs inestelle!
Ich ha jetz gschwind i di aktuelle AB FDV glueget, d Strecki über Huttu weri sogar Klass D4. Komisch, dases det sone Sonderregelig git.
Isch no interessant z gseh, dass d BLS jetzt praktisch di ganz Infrastruktur ade Strecki erneueret. Huttu z.B. isch ja scho siit paar Johr fertig, s alte Ifahrsignal vode Siite Langetu her staht defür jetzt be mir im Garte. ^^
Gärä gscheh.
Luschtig wägem Signal :-) .. vorallem wemä denkt was das Signal scho als bewirkt het.
@@lorirocks777 So isches, det sind viel Zugfahrte dra verbii gange. 1998 müessti s Baujahr si, weni mi recht entsinne.
A propos Signal - Ich be uf dere Fahrt es paar mal uf di unbemalte Abdeckige inegheit und ha gmeint, ich gsechi noimets Achündigung 90 oder 40. xD
Thanks for the cab ride. Was this entire trip taken in one day itself? For a couple of minutes it was clear and sunny. After a break in the journey however it became overcast and rainy. What about a trip to Waldenburg on the narrow gauge railway track? None of the cab rides have focused on that area so far.
There is a fine video of the Waldenburg to Liestal route at ruclips.net/video/0gugODvhIK8/видео.html
What is the train at 49.00? Is it a preserved unit run by a preservation society?
It is, yes. ruclips.net/video/6mk7ayddab8/видео.html
I spent a month in Switzerland in 1967 and this type of equipment was the new stuff then.
Is the ethanol added to gasoline in Switzerland like it is here in the U.S.?
Well, I'm not Swiss, neither, so let's do some outsider guessing together...
The only operational oil refinery in Switzerland is to be found in the canton of Neuenburg, far west from Schachen, the freight's destination.
As we got informed, the railcars go to a company named Alcosuisse, and on their website they describe their business as quoted: "Swiss-quality ethanol for any and every purpose: whether as an ingredient in pharmaceutical or cosmetic products, as a basis for industrial processes, in the production of beverages containing alcohol or in university research, alcosuisse is the Swiss supplier of ethanol, providing you with the grade exactly tailored to your specific needs."
@@praeceptor Paul Bislin, a Swiss train driver answered that stations in Switzerland have from 5-7 types of fuel at the pumps. Only 95-octane lead-free has ethanol added, so I presume ethanol is used for other purposes in Switzerland besides motor fuel.
technical ethanol was until recently state controlled the (whole) distribution by train which appears to have been retained
I don't think the Ae 1042 have the Integra-Signum/Zub/ETCS system, as I hear no signal (as they are ex-ÖBB) or am I wrong?
1:15:29 The school train on the right
The microphone was placed in the engine room for this video, otherwise you would've heard it. No locomotives are allowed on the mainline anymore without integra & ZUB.
@@lorirocks777 So it's not quite that noisy in the cab then?
Nice video, but I imagined Switzerland more beautiful, more landscape and less industrial area, nicer houses and not so many streets
It depends where you go. A lot of the industrial areas are along the tracks, because most of them once had their own siding.
You might enjpy my Lötschberg video more, or a video of the Bernina Pass.
👍👍👍👏👏👏😍😍😍👌
Ist das im Führerstand immer so laut? Oder wirkt es durch die Aufnahme so?
Gut erkannt!
@@lorirocks777 , ach so.
Why does the train needs to go to Lucerne when it's passing it's starting point anyway (Schachen @20:27) Can't it just start from there to go to it's destination?
I think it has come from Basle via the main line to Lucerne (due to its weight being too great for the secondary line), where it reversed, and went forward to the terminal. Then the 2 locos returned to Basle by continuing along the secondary line rather than returning via Lucerne.
If I understand Lorirocks' intro, the train was to heavy to take that route while full.
Schöne Mitfahrt & Danke für die Einblendungen ~ Gruß vom Niederrhein
Danke! Lieber Gruss
A CHROMECAST ESTAR AGORA NOTA 1000.00 ....OK
yipeeee :D
Loco's a bit different as well isn't it. Ex ÖBB Class 1042? Are you trained on those as well or were you there in the capacity of pilotman?
I'm trained on them too. It's a real honour being able to drive these long serving veterans in Switzerland.
Thank you once again. What was the motive power? 1142 or 1144? Regards Ian Brunssum NLD
1042
This locomotive is a 1042.0 and has 3200 HP. The ÖBB locomotive series 1142 originated from the conversion of the 1042.5 and has 4000 HP, whereby only the locomotives with the thristor resistance brake were converted, but which were not sold in Switzerland. The 1144 series has 5400 kW (7340 hp) and was created by converting the 1044.0 and 1044.2 series of the ÖBB. In Austria there are some 1042 (1042.0 and 1042.5) in museum holdings and as primary systems but are not ready for use. 1142 and 1144 are still used in the plan service. In addition, 1042.5 and 1142 were sold to Germany, and 1142 to Hectorrail ...
Danke
would it be torturing old loco? haha
Surely the slowest train ever !?
oh no its not
