Thanks for this awesome video. As I grew up in Olten the first bit of railway history we had in school was the accident of the old Hauenstein tunnel. At the time it did not make much of an impression on me. However after reading much more it became clear that even in the old times the fight for funding and the appointment for a foreign most experienced tunnel builder. They hired mostly foreign workers. From an engineering aspect the limited availability of tools or even machinery made this true marvel of its time. They knew it was to steep but confidence was too low to spend more money. Later they built the base tunnel with no issues. The old tunnel is still in such perfect condition considering the challenging geological condition. One day I want to walk it. Since it has been converted to single track it has plenty of room. During its temporary closure there was even an advertised hike. I was also deep inside the Belchen Autobahntunnel with my bicycle a day before the opening. Never forgot the downhill speed I reached with my old 10 speed bike well over its design limit. Look how they had to build a 3rd tunnel tube just because the Jura massif is so challenging.
The history of the Hauenstein Scheiteltunnel is indeed fascinating. If I ever get back to Switzerland I would love to both ride through and hike through it!
I would advise against walking through tunnels on active railways without a permit. Of course it would be interesting, but besides it being illegal, many people have been killed in the process, even experienced track workers. For a train driver, seeing somebody wondering around in a tunnel isn't a nice experience.
@@lorirocks777 Oh no, I'd never walk through any railway tunnel unless it was closed to rail traffic and pedestrian traffic was expressly permitted. I may be curious, but I'm not suicidal! 😁

A side-by-side offering is tempting, but I fear such may not translate very well to my cellphone's small screen. Thanks for showing. The large areas of flat land traversed would indicate the lakes use to be a much, much larger in area. A request! Bern -Belp-Thun, Thun-Luzern, Luzern-Bern. Not seen since the old Iron road series in the 1980's
As a local of the area, a little side note at the end of the last ice age the whole region used to be an enormous lake, Afterwards, the land got flooded regularly for thousands of years until the sea level of the lakes got lowered by approximately two meters at the end of the 19th century. This massive piece of engineering was achieved by building a large-scale canal network, which doesn't just link the three lakes together but a whole area extending over 5 cantons.

Lovely video as usual! I really enjoyed the initial single line descent to Neuchatel, including the change of direction at Chambrelien. I checked the timetable, it showed only 2 minutes halt there. Is that enough for the driver to switch ends - walk the length of the train, and the setting up procedures in the loco/cab car? And not to mention the amazing timing and clockwork system of Swiss trains. It was seen while approaching Neuchatel when your train got done with the single track section and crossed the opposite direction IR66 which would then use the same single line section. That sort of timing always impresses me. Thanks for posting this rare coverage!
