    DESCRIPTION:
    This is the big one. A Sonic ROM hack which is 40Mb in size! While most emulators will happily comply with this irregular magnitude, will Sonic Delta 40Mb pass the ultimate test and function on the console it was designed for? Well, unfortunately, it's not that straight forward...
    CHAPTERS:
    0:00 - I need your full concentration
    0:17 - Introduction
    1:34 - Mega EverDrive PRO
    2:17 - Sonic Delta 40Mb overview
    7:49 - Mega EverDrive X7
    10:28 - Mega EverDrive X5
    11:01 - Mega EverDrive X3

    12:59 - Flashkit Cart MD (Incorrect, read description)
    14:46 - Surprise Flash cart
    16:40 - Does Sonic Delta work on Real Hardware?
    16:46 - Explanation and conclusion
    IGNORE the "Flashkit Cart MD" chapter of the video. When I bought the cart, I thought the cart was 8MB of size. Turns out it's only 4MB. No wonder why Sonic Delta and Super Street Fighter II didn't work! I deeply apologise for this mis-information. The rest of the chapters are still correct and accurate.

    18:05 - So, as promised, here's my pinned comment. This was last edited on the 14th June 2021:
    - Sonic Delta version 0.64 has been released recently. However, this video still remains true.
    - The Mega Everdrive X series has received an OS update (MEGAOS-V3.14). However, this video still remains true.
    12:59 - IGNORE this chapter of the video. When I bought the cart, I thought the cart was 8MB of size. Turns out it's only 4MB. No wonder why Sonic Delta and Super Street Fighter II didn't work! I deeply apologise for this mis-information. The rest of the chapters are still correct and accurate.

    RHS has predicted the option screen in Sonic Delta since it got updated and the latest version actually uses it, and it even applies with the sonic 3 music selection and other stuff. Hell, even the blue spheres game got added in as a playable mini game. Heck, even the lift in Hidden Palace (Sonic 2) got sped up when RHS said, "could it be sped up a bit? Thanks". I love how the creator listened to what redhotsonic said and actually followed with his wishes like an option screen and the lift in hidden palace to be sped up. This hack really is legit!

      It really is a great Sonic hack. I just wish there was a way to save the score along with the lives and continues on the data select screen as save-stating on an EverDrive is not possible because of this game's size. If Neto entered this in this year's Sonic hacking Contest he'd piss the pants off all the other contest hacks.

    I have to say that Sonic Delta is very, very long. It has 30+ zones, comprises of Sonic 1, 2 and 3&K zones, which include:
    1 - Green Hill Zone
    2 - Marble Zone
    3 - Spring Yard Zone
    4 - Labyrinth Zone
    5 - Star Light Zone
    6 - Scrap Brain Zone
    7 - Final Zone
    8 - Emerald Hill Zone
    9 - Winter Hill Zone
    10 - Wood Zone
    11 - Sand Shower Zone
    12 - Chemical Plant Zone
    13 - Neo Green Hill Zone
    14 - Casino Night Zone
    15 - Hill Top Zone
    16 - Dust Hill Zone
    17 - Hidden Palace Zone
    18 - Oil Ocean Zone
    19 - Metropolis Zone
    20 - Genocide City Zone
    21 - Sky Chase Zone
    22 - Wing Fortress Zone
    23 - Death Egg Zone (Sonic 2)
    24 - Angel Island Zone
    25 - Hydrocity Zone
    26 - Marble Garden Zone
    27 - Carnival Night Zone
    28 - Ice Cap Zone

    34 - Hidden Palace Zone
    35 - Sky Sanctuary Zone
    36 - Death Egg Zone (Sonic & Knuckles)
    37 - The Doomsday Zone
    Yeah, 37 ZONES. What a long game this is. In total, it is 19 (Sonic 1) + 29 (Sonic 2) + 26 (Sonic 3&K) = 74 acts. Which is twice the number of zones in the whole collection.

    It's nice to see that the overall rom hack receives a lot of feedback and continuous updates to try and fix bugs, and more. I strongly agree with your points on the Sonic 2 portion of the game. Quality over Quantity. Just a shame that wasn't fully represented.
    Unoptimised music for Sonic 2 plus 3 & Knuckles just doesn't feel right.
    A lot of advanced tech solutions to fix those crashes just to load the rom as intended.

    - Fixed a DAC mapping issue that caused Launch Base 1 and 2 songs (final version) to play incorrectly;
    - Fixed playing of some Sonic 1 songs;
    - Added some 8-bit songs converted in "Sound Test", courtesy of Nineko;
    - Added more sound options for Super Sonic and Invincibility in "Sonic 2 Delta" mode;
    - Added Title Cards in the stages in Competition mode;

    - 5:50 I think the game was trying to load the special stage screen, but all the graphics got corrupted, essentially crashing the game.
    - 6:19 It was probably because the game tries to load Super Tails' palettes, but fail to do so due to probably missing/incorrect palette values.

    Now if they could make a Delta Heroes hack...
    Btw, I'm thinking the reason for the lag on PAL systems is that they're designed for 50Hz rather than the 60Hz we may be used to.
    That differential is 8.3%. If the cartridge had the runtime chips feeding this to the genesis in parallel, it could double this number to 16.7% (in other words your 17% slower).

    Imagine if they make an even bigger Sonic Delta which also includes Sonic CD. It would need a Sega CD, MegaSD or Mega EverDrive Pro because of the CD features.
    It would basically be Sonic Origins’ Story Mode and Sonic Delta 40Mb combined with some additional levels and features.
    It would also have a special 32X CD version that would take advantage of the 32X hardware for less slowdown.

    Just out of interest, it might be a good idea at some point to revisit this hack redhotsonic because Neto is still updating it as I speak, the current update stands at v0.69 and Neto's introduced a new similar options menu to Sonic 3 Complete with the choice to change Sonic 3's music to proto or final and or to go straight to the ''Blue Sphere'' game or to view the Sonic Delta Credits. It now has 50Hz optimised music for every game in the hack (especially Sonic 1) so he is slowly really making some neat progress with some major changes. I feel he may be getting closer now to actually finishing it. Neto is the most dedicated Sonic hacker i've ever seen having spent more than an entire decade on this one ROM hack.
    The SRAM save thingy might even be fixed as I started playing it on the X7, turned it off, came back and the save window still showed Zone 1. Here's hoping this is fixed or gets fixed because save stating is still a no-go because the ROM still sits at 5 Megabytes - 40 megabits.
    Never has the name ''Sonic Delta'' been more confusing for a Sonic hack during today's pandemic.

    I'm not surprised that the dedicated EPROM cartridge didn't work. Mappers are dedicated chips added to the board, so you need more specialized access techniques to make it work. The EverDrive series HAS to have a mapper because it can switch games on the fly without reprogramming. A board meant for reproduction (read: bootleg) cartridges won't spend the extra money unless it needs it.

    • @codahighland
      @codahighland 3 года назад

      Additionally, I would argue that the game doesn't work on your flash carts, not that it doesn't work on the Genesis/Mega Drive hardware. It's a game that needs custom hardware in the cartridge, just like so many SNES games.

    Neto's updated this hack now to version 0.61 (as I write this) and the music is now fully optimised for 50Hz, although I found a bug with Knuckles in only 5 minutes of playing it, it seems to crash after the 1up jingle is heard. Still can't save state because the ROM is 5 Megabytes - 40 Megabits SSF ROM type on the X7. I tried playing a save file and reseting EverDrive, if it's gone i'll know that the game still has no working SRAM or my battery back-up is fucked, not sure because some games it clearly works while others it clearly doesn't. Just thought I would update you redhotsonic since it's been 2 months since this video was made. It seems Neto is very slowly making progress and good luck to him.

    Sonic Delta 40 Mb has its own hardware ( www.neto-games.com.br/hardware/sonic_delta_40Mb_hardware.php ) and it works on real hardware. The issue with flash carts is because the developers does not followed the SEGA standards for games greater than 32Mb. Older emulators like Kega Fusion works without any patches.

    • @redhotsonic
      @redhotsonic  3 года назад +3

      Yeah, hence I made a pinned comment that I will change overtime. I did feel it wasn't exactly the game's fault, but as it uses mappers, a lot of easily grabbable carts can be picky with it. I'm trying to think from the average Joe's point-of-view who would grab the game, put it on a cart, and expect it to work. Once the X7 and co gets updates, I'll probably change the rating. As for your link, that's pretty interesting. Unfortunately, I do not have the technical skill to do something like that otherwise I so would have done that for the video! 😅 Still a good ROM hack though and had fun. I just feel the S2 portion needs cutting down a tad. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next update! 😃

    • @marcosassis0
      @marcosassis0 3 года назад

      @@redhotsonic how much did you pay (or donated) for the ROM? because in the ending you compare this to commercial games as if it was the same context. so it seemed exactly that you was blaming the game. i think your analysis of the everdrives compatibility was nice, but the reasoning on the ending was ungrateful with all the work Neto does for this community. so many contributions made by him with generosity. and from the technical point of view he is improving the flashcards to follow better the SEGA standards.

    • @redhotsonic
      @redhotsonic  3 года назад +1

      @@marcosassis0 - I didn't donate anything as the ROM was released for free. I still have the right to criticise though. What I did do though is buy an X3, Mega Pro and a Mega SD solely for this game if that means anything. While it may appear to not exactly be the game's fault and it's more the flash carts to blame, I'm thinking from an average Joe's point of view. Not everyone has the technical know-how to build their own flash cart with mapper support. This game requires it. This game requires more than most ROMs do. Hence it's rating of partially. It goes over 4MB which makes it incompatible with a lot of carts so the game itself had an influence to it working or not-working on hardware. I think my rating is more than fair.
      And I'm not dissing Neto's work at all and he knows it. In fact, there's a topic over at Sonic Retro where he and I and others helped each other and fixed a ton of issues for Sonic 2. I also discovered the code for the blue goo to fall on Eggmans head (CPZ boss) still being in the final game and Neto improved on it and found more. I have a huge amount of respect for Neto but that doesn't mean I'm going to kiss ass either. I'm hoping my comments actually help improve the game and not upset him.
      And as about comparing to commercial games, well, duh. I can't say, "it won't load... But it's not a commercial game so let's fix it ourselves and say yes it works". It would defeat the purpose of this series as we could do that to ANY game that comes up No or Partially. For example, Sonic Adventure 64 does not work on real hardware. But you can hex edit the ROM and change a lot of code which will take you hours to get it to "run" extremely slowly. Does that mean I should change the rating to a yes? Well, no, because it's not our job to fix it. Neto may have done everything he can his side, but with its high requirement, it doesn't deserve special treatment or a pardon that any other game cannot get.
      That's my view. I'm not biting back at you or anything, just explaining my side and how I see things. Of course, you're welcome to disagree. At the end of the day, the rating I give is my opinion and not a fact.

    • @marcosassis0
      @marcosassis0 3 года назад +1

      @@redhotsonic I understand your reasons. I still think the video could bring to us all this, especially the fact that there is a real hardware, a custom cartridge that runs on original hardware [and it's conforming to SEGA specs]. The latest ROM update is from May 2005 version 2.0 it has different artwork in Wood Zone which is now called ''Lost Wood Zone'' if i'm reporting that it works then you know it works because I test everything on real hardware and i'm one of the communities biggest complainers and reporters of bugs.

    Great video! There is one problem I have with that assessment though; if the issue has to do with the having the right cartridge (rather than an issue with the ROM itself), then wouldn't the game theoretically release with the necessary one if released commercially like any other game at the Genesis'/Mega Drive's heyday? I'm late to the party as usual but just wanna say what a great video you have put together and respect the amount of work that has been put into editing this and congratulations on owning all flash carts, I agree with all the points you mentioned in the video, from my personal discovery with this fascinating ROM hack is that the problems it has with loading and saving is down to Neto's actual ROM hack that still has lots of bugs to iron out before a complete finished version comes. Super Street Fighter II uses it's SSF ROM type with no issues so it's not the ROM type, the hack unfortunately can't save state on the Mega EverDrive X7 and that's simply down to the fact that the ROM is TOO BIG. Anything over 4 Megabytes can't save state and is not considered a SEGA -16 ROM type so that means I won't be able to play this ROM hack anytime soon, I can't leave the power on for a month straight, I go to work 5 days a week, do house work on weekends, go grocery shopping and have a wife and child who need attention so sitting through this game in one sitting just isn't feasible for me. My X7 doesn't save the battery back up either but I don't blame Neto for that one, I think my battery is dead. To be honest, it's a great idea to have all the classic titles in one complete game and Neto should go down in history as the first to implement this idea, but let's not kid ourselves, this game DOES NOT WORK ON REAL HARDWARE AT ALL, once a crash is recorded, it's ruined! It doesn't matter if it still records the emeralds you picked up or whatever, the fact that the game has to be interrupted just to return to the data select screen to get to where you were means it's far from a finished product and that it doesn't work as intended.
    I also have to agree with Nikash Gill, the ROM hack is not optimised in audio for 50Hz for the entire game and that really bugs me and sounds weird. Only Sonic 1 should have this or go the complete route and optimise the entire thing, so it's far from an ideal finished version, even though Neto's gone through how many revisions now? 50, 60 and still no signs of a complete overhaul to the bugs and loading/saving issues that this ROM has and you're right, it should be working right out of the box but we also have to remember that it's a free game that wasn't paid for and when something is free it's not always expected to work 100% right out of the box.
    For now it's still probably best to play these games seperately or try Natsumi's 4 in 1 that includes Sonic 1 to Knuckles aswell as the complete ''Sonic 3 & Knuckles'' and ''Knuckles In Sonic 2'' and even ''Blue Sphere'' added in it and that ROM sits at 6 megabytes large and works like a charm right out of the box!

      Thanks for the kind comments. I kind of went a bit overboard with buying carts but at least I'm prepped for future episodes. And now a Black Friday sale is on... typical!
      To say a single crash means it doesn't work on real hardware is harsh. If we went by that statement, then the original Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3&K also do not work as there's crashes in them 😛

    • @Oysterblade84

      @@redhotsonic I thought the Black Friday thing was only over here in Australia but it must be everywhere around the world (my stupid) and yeah well at least you got the complete package now, every EverDrive available and every model Mega Drive/Genesis so congratulations! You're now my guru when it comes to Sonic and the Mega Drive.
      No game is perfect and I accept that but Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles don't crash in the same manner as Neto's hack and they can be avoided in the original games so they don't count, you have to go out of your way to make them crash almost where as Neto's hack it happens where you can't avoid it, big difference my friend, in Sonic 2 it would sometimes crash when killing Rexon in Hill Top Zone but that can easily be avoided if you knew about it and that didn't happen often and in Sonic 3 Sonic only crashed when doing debug mode and travelled to an area of the maps where Knuckles would have to go through with Sonic or Tails. Basically what i'm saying is if a crash is unavoidable and hinders gameplay then it should be classified as ''it doesn't work'' yet if the crash can be avoided by going another route in a level or not jumping on Rexon in Hill Top Zone then it's okay as it's not hindering gameplay, that's how I rank them but of course I respect your opinion and your findings and it's your video.
