  • I've heard a few collectors mentioning a method to get the colour of vintage action man gripping hands back to how they originally looked and I wanted to give it a try. This is a test that I want to come back to in a year as I am not sure what it will do to the rubber long term.
    Watch the results from one year later here: • Vintage Action Man - G...

    You mentioned letting that soak for one year. And then you corrected and said 1 hour.

    The scariest thing a collector can think of “how long will my collection hold up?” I mean I don’t want it to last forever, and I would love it if I last as long but I’ve started to see decade on my collection, specially with “newer” productions...makes me sad

      New toys are made to last a very short time. Some are broken direct from the packet, Hasbro!!! Listen up. These hands are already 40 years old, so not doing to badly. Enjoy them while they, and we, last.

    First off when dealing with older brittle plastics I would suggest using a restorer. Such as car car products that are compatible with paint. Secondly I have had a lot of success with retro brightening on plastics of all color. It is not always perfect but dose tend to restore original tone to the plastics color. Just some thoughts.

    Rubber can be softened using a process that involves rubbing alcohol and wintergreen oil, it well know for reconditioning car engine parts.

    If the hans go rock solid and still have the fingers then technically you can call them newer versions of the hard hands from before

    I remember my Falcon (Brazilian GiJoe/ActionMan) broke his hands after 3 to 6 months, brand new. Luckly the newest ones, from 2017 onwards, have better materials... well except the first batch had a chemical reation between head and body that melted and whitened the neck, but that was fixed fast and sold with a huge discount that allowed us to build a lot of custom figures, so we do not talk about that.
    Anyway, current hands are much more dureable, and we have stores that sell replacement hands from costworld. But the problem is that we not have Falcon that have different brown skin colors (as african and arabic), so those will be an issue in the future.

    Hi Toy Polloi. I hope we do't have to wait a whole year for another video...I'm actually coming to visit Bath at the end of the month and just wondered if there were any areas, or shops you could recommend to check out for vintage toys.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  6 лет назад

      Not a whole year. There will be a new video this Friday. But a video on these hands will be another year :) American dream comics in bath sometimes has vintage, but last time a dropped in they had opened a new store in another town and taken all the vintage there. Might be worth emailing them to ask if they have any back in bath.

    I would also think that bleach would damage plastic/rubber in the long term, as bleach tends to break down properties at a molecular level. Interesting test though. I'm interested in seeing what happens over time.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  6 лет назад

      That is my thought as well. But I've seen quite a few people doing this so thought I would cover it long term.

  • @Liofa73

    Unfortunately degradation due to oxidation hardening is inevitable in these old (and a lot of modern) plastics. The compounds were designed many years ago when plastics technology was less advanced. The average design lifespan of an Action Man hand was probably a few years, or until the kid grew up or got fed up with the toy and it ended up at a jumble sale.
    I suspect most of the originals kicking around on ebay have been stored in poor conditions, in lofts near heating tanks, in warm cupboards, in the garden shed. Vacuum bagging might have helped reduce the oxidation and molecular chain cross-linking, but who had one of those machines back in the 70s and 80s?
    Sometimes we just have to accept that only fix is a modern replacement. Another option might be to mould your own from the old hardened hands. There are plenty of products on the market, including those "adult" entertainment mould kits which might give you a colour match. ;)

      these aren't resin hands, they're rubbery. besides, doing that rather defeats the purpose of restoring these, eh?

    try my variant of retrobrighting, make a little stand for the items, put a little bottom of hydroperoxide in a container, levitate the item above the liquid (not in the liquid) and set it in the sun.
