    One thing worth mentioning: at 1/2000s the maximum aperture is limited to f/4, and at 1/4000s it is limited to f/8. It takes time for the leaf shutter to open and close, and the time it is fully open is too short to allow for a full flash exposure at 1/2000s.
    The X100F's firmware does warn you about this by showing exposure data in red.

      Yes, I was going to include that but I felt I was already so "tech" heavy lol.... Also, I shot one final image in the series at f4, 1/4000 and saw no difference in the image except for the one-stop exposure difference. Odd...

    Hi Booray--I have been steadily working my way through all of your X100F videos and I have to say they are truly excellent and are proving very helpful to me. In particular, you have really demystified the use of leaf shutters, flash, and ND filters for me. You are an excellent and natural teacher--I am a person who has been involved in educating people at all levels of the medical world and can tell you that effective teaching is not easy and you are great at it. I just subscribed to your channel and I have never subscribed to any RUclips channel before because of privacy concerns. @@BoorayPerry Yeah, well, I make a point of telling people when they are doing a great job because people usually only say something when they are upset and/or making a complaint. It’s not easy to put yourself out into the world in the way you are doing this, it’s not easy to make complex concepts digestible for non-experts, so, people need to know when they are achieving excellence. God knows there is a ton of stuff on RUclips and out on the web that doesn’t meet that standard. So, here’s a virtual pat on the back and “Good Job”! Good Evening. As I begin to take on the process of using off camera flash, your videos have been quite informative. Understanding the leaf shutter in relation to flash photography is really a big deal. Based on your recommendation, I purchased the Godox system for my X100F. I spend much time sorting through reviews and videos before a decision is made. So, running across intelligent, straight forward explanations has been quite helpful. So many reviews and videos are about coolness; hands in the air, much body language, etc. It is nice to be able to watch a video that just goes to what Detective Joe Friday said.....”just the facts”. How is the aperture lowering flash power? And does a leaf shutter helps with some lines that come on pictures indoors sometimes? Thanks

    • @BoorayPerry
      @BoorayPerry  Год назад

      Every time your aperture changes your flash power changes. If your aperture is changed to let in half as much light then your flash has to put out twice as much light.
      If a line you are speaking of it is a dark shadow across the bottom of the image then yes that disappears when using a leaf shutter.

    A Neutral Density filter with the DLSR would bring about similar results... but the leaf shutter certainly was well explained, thanks for the info!

    • @BoorayPerry
      @BoorayPerry  5 лет назад +2

      The problem with using a neutral density filter is that it affects your flash power the same as if you had raised your aperture. a two stop neutral density filter will cut the available light from your flash by 75%. As I mentioned in the video this might not be a problem if you've got the flash 6in from your subject but if you are backing that flash up you're going to need every bit of power you can get. Of the 4 things that affect light in the camera (ISO, Aperture, ND filters, Shutter Speed) shutter speed is the only one that can limit the amount of light coming into the camera without affecting the amount of flash coming in.

    • @stephengatley8144
      @stephengatley8144 5 лет назад +2

      ND filters also affect the focusing abilities of the camera too!

    • @DLMlive
      @DLMlive 5 лет назад

      Not wanting to hijack this very good tutorial and, not owning or being an expert on Lief shutters, I can say for the DLSR ... that depends on the camera and low light capability. If you shoot with a Canon 50mm F1.2 at wide open in bright light with a Canon 5D MK4... then the ND will effectively get the shutter down to a usable range and high speed sync setting for fill flash if over 1/200 sec. The Leif shutter certainly gets it all done easier and dates back to the original concept. To discount the benefits of a lief shutter as a selected choice would be foolish from my own perspective but, like anything there are strengths and weaknesses. I think the lief fits certain styles of photography perfectly and may be a best choice.

    • @BoorayPerry
      @BoorayPerry  5 лет назад +3

      @@DLMlive The problem is that the ND filter will also limit your flash power and so will hi-speed sync. More likely you are shooting at f4.0 or higher for a portrait, which means less light from your flight than 1.2 (75% less). Then you add a 3 stop ND filter and now you are at 3% of your flash power. Add Hi-speed sync and you will cut it even more although I don't know the math on it. Remember it's impossible to use hi-speed sync without losing power.
      The bottom line is this: If you can get enough light on your subject at f11 and 1/200 to make it work than yes, a 3-stop ND filter will get you to f4 and still have enough light. But my experience on the beach has been that (on a bright day) you can't get enough light at f11 from the flash most of the time with a standard speedlight to overpower the sun if it is high and behind the subject. You need more flash power or a leaf shutter. That's why I use bigger lights on the beach. :)

Nikon flashes has this as well as Godox Iv shot Actors head-shots this way at 2000 th a second at 2.8 with a D810 AND 85mm 1.4 lens with no issues :)

      But they use more battery to do that, and need a stronger light that will make you spend a lot of money to get a really competent HSS speedlite. Try to use HSS in direct sunlight like shown in this video and you will realize that no, HSS is not the same thing. Leaf shutter will have more of a dramatic effect costing much less in battery life, you can even do it using your built in flash.

    cool! If the leaf shutter is so useful, I wonder why camera manufacturers have chosen largely to use a focal plane shutter instead? is it more cost effective to produce?

    • @BoorayPerry
      @BoorayPerry  5 лет назад +2

      Well I'm no expert but I believe that a leaf shutter has to be part of the lens which would mean much more expensive lenses Since the x100F is a fixed lens that's not a problem.

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 5 лет назад +1

      Cost and speed. There are several systems with leaf-shutters, yet they're exceptionally expensive Medium Format systems. Although leaf-shutters afford faster shutterspeeds with respect to flash synch, they're more difficult to drive to the extreme shutterspeeds of modern focal-plane shutters due to space and material constraints. Moreso within separate lenses, rather than the integrated lens-sensor modules like the X100F has - so, I think that the X100F leaf shutter has more range than the expensive interchangeable lenses.
      There are other compact cameras with them, though, with the low-cost Ricoh GR and DP3 Merrill having leaf shutters. The new GR III has a leaf shutter, yet they've taken out the flash, which has many street photographers "scratching their heads." You can just add a flash, of course, yet you'd be hard-pressed to find a flash which wasn't bigger than the 240g camera itself :)
      Leica's S system reflex cameras (not the L Mount Alliance series) have both a focal-plane shutter and select lenses with leaf-shutters. The leaf-shutter versions of lenses are more expensive.
      Hasselblad's X1D has leaf-shutters in all their lenses, and no focal-plane shutter. This means that despite the short-flange they can only use adapted lenses in electronic shutter mode. It's a very expensive system.
      Probably not a consideration of most camera companies, but the ideal interchangeable system would have optional leaf-shutter lenses, a focal-plane, and a short-flange. The closest to this is the GFX system, as it has a focal-plane shutter, short-flange and also adaptors for certain film-era Hasselblad lenses (which were actually designed and made by Fuji) which have leaf-shutter lenses.
      Basically, it works out cheaper to have a standard system with satellite leafshutter cameras for when you need it than to have a system built on leafshutter lenses which each cost more than any compact camera.
      The X100 line also have wide+tele conversion lenses. With the teleconverter added, it can become a 50mm f/2 equivalent lens with leaf shutter advantages - this affords moving portraiture with fast AF and flash - ideal for fashion; perhaps unique. There's a Fuji case study video of a fashion photographer who got the X100F because his $50,000 medium format systems couldn't do this.
      (The DP3 Quattro and DP3 Merrill have 75mm f/2.8 equiv. lenses, so they'd suit portraiture, though their AF is very limited.)

    it's not about a "leaf shutter". it's all about "fuji X100F's leaf shutter" because almost all conventional leaf shutters have maximum speed of 1/500 which is only 1 stop faster than modern focal plane shutters so any advantage is rather illusive.

    Thanks for the video. If leaf shutter is so good then why doesn’t XT-3 have it?

    • @BoorayPerry
      @BoorayPerry  5 лет назад +1

      Leaf shutters are built into the lens. So, in order for the X-T3 to have it they would have to develop an entire new line of leaf shutter lenses. Because the x100f has a fixed lens they can make it a leaf shutter lens easily.

    Im using the fuji x70 wich also has a leaf shutter. It seems when using off camera flash with a trigger it does not want to sync beyond 1/1000 even when stopping down the apperture. The on camera flash though does sync at higher shutter speeds when I stop down as per your demonstration. What is your experience in this regard when using off camera flash?

    • @BoorayPerry
      @BoorayPerry  4 года назад +1

      Well I've never used the x70 so it's hard for me to comment. If off camera won't sync at higher speeds my first guess would be that there is a problem in the flash synch speed to start. I'm not the guy to get into this but I remember when the first off-camera TTL remotes came out you had to calibrate them to your flash. Maybe something like that?

      Booray Perry Thanx Booray. The x70 is basically the sane as x100T. Have you tried higher sync speeds with a trigger on the x100f? Maybe my system is outdated, but thanx for the reply. Love your channel👍

      @@goal7779 I don't use OCF very often with the X100F. I like to have it available on occasion but I try to stay minimalist whenever possible. I don't think I've ever tried to use a really high SS off camera with it.

    does a faster shutter rate make the depth of field shallower? like would 1000 shutter f4 have a shallower depth of field than 250 shutter f4? regardless of the light, just depth of field

    • @Farmalando
      @Farmalando 5 лет назад

      No, only focal length, sensor size and aperture affects depth of field

    Shouldn't your ISO be 200, the base ISO of the x100F?

    • @jimmyhill9591
      @jimmyhill9591 5 лет назад +1

      The X100F has a 'low iso' setting of 100 available in JPEG only. I believe he used that to keep it an 'apples to apples' comparison to other cameras.

      Very perceptive! In order to test an extreme situation, I set the ISO to "L", which is 100. The base is 200 on the X100F to allow for more dynamic range. But if you were in an extrame bright situation and needed every bit of help you could get you could set to "L" and get another stop of knockdown. :)
